A 'Bit' finicky: the Vessel Ratcheting Stubby is a whole different animal, one pawl, more gear play.

Ya on the PB Swiss I'm pretty sure they did a recall. Since your demo video I tried to order one and everywhere is out of stock and back ordered.

yeah, vessel sticks with the 13mm detent length shanks rather than the international 9.5mm detent length shank. I have had to buy a bunch of domestic Japanese bits to get them to fit properly.

I have the same Vessel stubby, but it also came with a 200mm (or so) flex shaft...very cool

Just bought this stubby a couple of weeks ago and had to use it yesterday. I really liked it. I agree bit size is a little annoying but putting one-inch impact bits in there seemed to help with the detent sitting better but also very low. Back drag was good and the ratcheting mechanism felt really good to me. Maybe not as strong as the big one but it is also only a stubby. Thx for the review Doc.

I use the stubby driver part of the Vessel ball grip ratcheting Phillips driver, the same one you have on your bench in this video. The snap ring style detent holds the bits very securely, maybe too securely. That driver is in my EDC for work. This seems like a weird addition the vessel lineup, considering how effective the ratcheting mechanism on their ball grip drivers is.

      Absolutly
Sometimes Japanise stuff is weird, just when the weird becomes good it can become really good.

The ratchet mechanism in my Vessel TD6700 broke after four months of very light use (approximately three household jobs). A shame because it feels great to use...

The inside of the Sata screwdrivers' cap looks like it can be used as an even smaller non ratcheting stubby. It looks like it has a place right in the Center.

A good price, but that bit depth is a deal breaker IMO. Do you think you could glue a magnet or two down in there to take up some of that space?

I’ve done this in this particullar stubby, when I broke ball detention, it works better than before

@@bartekbuczek1363 thanks for the input! That's what I hoped. A good magnet can sometimes be the best detent, and a shallower socket is exactly what this stubby needs.

Vessel's new stuff is coming from Thailand. Yes, sometimes there's a color cue, ie the yellow ratching driver is from Thailand while the original gray one is from Japan. So that yellow one on the table in the background of the vid was made in Thailand.

Interesting stubby, but I prefer a magnetic bit holder, it can be more useful in tight spaces. But even this one can be modified with a little magnet, since the holder is deep enough. I have the little wera stubby with the ratchet and it is not the most precise, but the perfect locking is not the most important for me, because the tool is doing the job and is reliable, and I think it is compact, compared to this vessel. Pb swiss is also a good choice, expensive but they have the strongest magnet and very precise construction.

Looks like vessel stubby one using 13mm bit insertion which is japan standard for their own. And the Thailand Vessel using 9mm international standard bit insertion..

I'm curious what the back drag is on the Vessel stubby, you'd have though fewer pawls would mean less back drag which could be useful in tight spaces.

Assuming we all know what the heck a pawl/pall/powell was, a bold choice.

I have one, and the ratchet got stuck after under a month minimal usage.
Now it's just a stubby, not sure what can be done about it, shame really. Is there a way to take this apart?

You've probably already figured out that the stubby is made for Japanes 13mm anvil bits. That's why 9.5mm anvil US bits fall in too far. Also, JIS is obsolete as of 2008. It has been superseded by a DIN standard that performs at least as well to prevent cam out.

Not a fan of vessels stubby ratchet. It's too easy to accidentally flip direction and my ball bearing fell out after a couple days so any bit would fall out easily.

0:50.. being stubby, a single pawl is all that's needed.. the handle is too small to get any more torque than needed..
3:20.. I've never seen you pull that Vessel bit carrier open to show the 2 tier capabilities...did you know that it opens up?.
There's a seam across the bottom that separates the stack..Pull the back up and it will separate to a 2 tiered stack..also making it easier to get the bit driver out....

The two ended bit design reminds me of the Klein drivers. You have to use those specific bits. 👎
