Narcissists really can gaslight you into a really unwell state. I think I’m still recovering years later.
I hear ya loud and clear. 3 mos shy of 35 year union. It was never a marriage, which I consider more of a church ceremony. ALL these years later it's apparent, and the gaslighting over why he couldn't/wouldn't admit his lies. He never believed in the God we took our vows before. I have never felt so discarded or disregarded by another human. His traits, more than 5 of the 9 traits, maybe all? For his diagnosis. Above my pay grade and future knowledge of his cognitive decline and likely NPD. This is something that requires LEGAL ACTION FOR PROTECTION, A RESTRAINING ORDER? HARD TO enforce those. Although no kids, he has the dog we trained together to react to my 5 auto immune disorders disabilities and PTSD (he's now caused it to become complex c-ptsd) Sure, I'm divorcing him, but after he botched 6 years of therapy by talking to the psych behind my back, contradictory to all I was saying. I was the crazy, he was sane. According to his documents. While I did not sign a HIPAA release, it did not stop the Dr from hearing what he had to say about anything that took place, negatively. It was a 6 year nightmare that has taken a few more years getting the pieces back in order!.
Yes. It took me years to reset my thought, my behaviors, my life post narcissistic relationship.

Held accountable by a normal person's standards? Never. Since they are in a perpetual state of denial and living the lie, they never, ever admit wrongdoing and therefore, are never accountable for the evil they do.

It's when it is 'clinical' as in, it can classified as a disorder, that 'narcissism' takes on these "more than negative" traits [that is, not only pathological, but dangerous to themselves or society, by way of bodily harm].
I think the jury just wanted to send the message that, though shooting someone isn't acceptable, neither is incessantly pestering, goading, and threatening someone into doing it.

I’d like to give about 10K thumbs ups. I had listened to this case on a pod cast. Damn near wrecked my car when I heard hat she had been banned from living with any member of her family. That told the world everything they needed to know. I so appreciated the jury not convincing him.
How exactly did they send the message that shooting someone "isn't acceptable"?

I watched that trial. She and the boyfriend destroyed that man. He was afraid of her even in the courtroom.
I saw some of the trial and she was horrible and so is her dad and boyfriend.

He was suddenly not afraid of anything as soon as the trial ended lol the insanity trick almost never works, he had to throw a good façade to get away with it
Gaslighting is probably the worst kind of manipulation. In my experience, I not only doubted myself but I really thought there was something fundamentally wrong with me. The damage is real and it can last for a very long time. It may take away our sanity, peace and motivation.

You are so right about this. In my experience, it took years to trust anyone afterwards. I didn't even trust myself to not fall into that trap again! It takes something away from you, in a way. It's difficult to find the right word for it. Trust, innocence, gun shy? Maybe all of these. 🙄
He didn't have the right to kill them or put her in a coma. they should have been held accountable for what they did but it's never okay to respond like that.
She took two gunshots and was in life threatening critical condition and told she almost died and never woke up. You can't do that to someone even if they harass you

How is she not charged with anything?! So absurd. She had a history of this abuse. Corrupt cops in Jersey or just plain unwilling to do their job to help Michael when he called 911. Getting shot twice seems like a good punishment IMHO 🤷♀️ never been shot but must be painful. Lots of manipulative people aren't as crazy or overt but never see any kind of prison despite similar behaviors.
While horses do a lot of work in dressage, it does require physicality to perform the proper movements in dressage- for instance, something called posting the trot is a movement riders do that basically entails rhythmic squats in tempo with the horse’s gait. It actually requires core and leg strength with plenty of stamina. 1 hour of dressage burns 410 calories, roughly equivalent to jogging for an hour for most people. Anyone saying it’s not hard or physically taxing to perform dressage has never ridden a horse 😅
Exactly! Dressage is like a total work out. Lots of isometrics and lower body movements. It may look like you aren’t working but you are!
Posting the trot is basically doing squats but the ground is moving and you fall from 5' if you screw it up, lol
I teach beginner riding lessons, and after people get the initial instruction and I have them start walking the horse around on their own, I usually ask them: "so what do you think, is the horse doing all the work?" The answer is usually an emphatic "no!". Riding horses takes core strength, balance, coordination, and the ability to regulate your own energy and emotions to help communicate with the horse. It's equal parts gratifying, exhilerating, and terrifying sometimes!

Right. And horses don’t just dance on their own. 😅 It takes incredible training for horses and rider and to be able to communicate with each other with just a sound or a touch/movement.
It’s not training them how to dance. The moves originated in training them for war. It looks like dancing to the untrained eye, but the moves are very difficult for any rider or horse to get to that level. Not all are talented enough. And if you are not physically fit it is extremely difficult to stay on a horse with the movements these horses can do. Think of sitting on an exercise ball raised off that ground that moves around and has a mind of its own. You have to keep your core, legs, arms, and head moving all independent of each other all while remembering to breathe.

Wow. This case reminds me of a similar experience from my life. I hosted an old friend from France and her two kids in my upstairs apartment. After the first couple of weeks, her narcissism took over and I got to experience firsthand the reason why her own family, her work, and her religious community back in France had all banned her. She had her manipulation and gaslighting turned up to 11. It was driving me crazy, and it destroyed my relationship with my BF, so I finally had to ask her to leave by a certain date. The only way I was able to get her out was to turn off the gas so it would be too cold to stay. The very next day, she and her kids were on my neighbor’s front porch. She made sure I knew my neighbor was now hosting her, which only lasted two weeks. Then she moved on to someone else’s house, and that lasted longer. Finally she went back to France. Phew! It was the most unpleasant experience I have ever had with another human being.

My family experienced something similar with a guest family who refused to leave our country cottage. My parents had only permitted them to stay temporarily but the non-paying guests were impossible to get rid of. They didnt outright say they refused but they just made endless excuses year after year. My parents gifted them some acres of land & cleared the land for them but they still refused to leave. Finally, my father moved into the cottage & took the main bedroom upstairs. He thought that would make them leave but they shot him through the floor. He had to fight back and it became quite gruesome. Its unbelievable but some people do take advantage to a ridiculous extreme, and it’s not always obvious when they confuse their victims with lies.
This happens a lot in my country. We hire a bunch of thugs. Wait for the family to leave the house. Break in. Dump all their shit on the road and then change the lock. Easy-peasy.

@@Naptosis he needed surgeries & passed away shortly afterward from suicide caused by the stress of the ordeal. Unbelievably, my mother sold the property in installments to the adult son of the man who attacked my father. That family destroyed my father & got the property in the end.

Narcs that do this - provoking somebody and then immediately flipping to a victim when they retaliate - target two kinds of people - 1. people who are already very vulnerable and on edge or 2. people who are kind and decent and open hearted, whose sense of empathy will be used against them. Michael is of type 2, me thinks, so all the more, it is correct he was found not guilty. It is a shame it went to trial in the first place.

Dr. Grande, as usual, I LOVE your commentary. Might I add one thing this time: Dressage, or "dancing horses", as you call it, involves tremendous physical strength and talent. Yes, it looks easy, as does, say, springboard diving. But trust me...as a person who has dedicated decades to the sport, it is not easy. Thank you for the wonderful video. You did a marvelous job. It's just...dressage is a weird, esoteric sport. Few people understand what it takes. I look forward to your next video. I am a loyal and loving fan.
Yeah, I was a little surprised at his closed minded comments about dressage and riding It’s the hardest equestrian sport IMO. We trot a lot and that’s basically a squat every two seconds depending on our speed. You have to be athletic to ride. You need lots of endurance as well because it’s straight cardio for an hour lesson. It also takes leg strength and core strength to make it look easy. It burns 410 calories in an hour. Just like other sport. Remember how sore you were after your first few lessons? Every muscle was pulled. Your legs felt like spaghetti. I hate when people make ignorant comments about riding and dressage. He could have taken a few minutes to research it a bit. Google is your friend Dr. Grande.

Gaslighting and harassment can change a person forever. My ex whom I had twins w/ gaslit me for years. The emotional abuse & ensuing rages leave scars.
When I got him out of the house, he turned on our kids and punished me through them. It’s 5 years later and he still harasses and tries to control me. He moved to france and lives off the state avoid child support. I won’t go to court b/c he’d return here in anger, and likely w/ violence in mind. This woman is the same - she would have never stopped, and the longer it went on, the more damage she’d do, all the while believing she was a victim. It’s sick af.
I believe, after living through a separation, no plans to return, it just took me this much time to gather the strength in the (and in him the timing had to be in his "best interests?" Whatever that means. As much as I knew, his ment as lly abusive treatment would never stop, the day I filed all the paperwork/I formation to the law team I hired. I cried despite knowing staying would turn more and more harmful amid the toxic environment we form, it's scary when he sets himself up for rage. If I am antagonizing him, in the very beginning I did, relentlessly, I was so angry for destroying our 35 year marriage, in just 3 months. RIGHT mindset to continue forward is crucial. As we evolve through this, his toddler good is shining bright. It's the reversal of mindset that has turned devious, not harmful per sé, but when he hides something on me, I have no choice but to look for it. Up to 6 hours usually at night time when things are discovered. I shut him down when he starts, it is my only way of survival through this. One final signature and I go off HIS grid

She didn't do it because she felt superior, he was an asshole to her when she moved there and paid $5k a month to live there and take lessons. he cast her off to other trainers once he decided she didn't have the talent or capability. that's not what a teacher does. He let her there and she wouldn't leave because she still wanted to board her horses but the conflict never would have started had he carried through with his end of the deal, how hard is that really for $5k a month? She's not a heinous criminal and didn't deserve to be shot

I agree. I think Michael took the pistol in order to protect himself in case the crazy lady went more crazy when he tried to make her leave the property. She did.....and he protected himself....as is his right. An example of a narcissistic person claiming victimhood when their nasty ways catch up with them.
He called cops 3 times. Police should've been able to help Michael get her off of his property for good.
@@northerngirl1637 The laws about such situations, are different in every state. For instance, in Maine, it's nearly impossible to make someone leave your home through legal means, even if they started off as an overnight visitor; the law refuses to get involved.
I've no idea what NJ laws are, but let this be a warning to all good-hearted people. No Good deed goes unpunished.
It looks like he was beaten up and he was confronting a man and a she-beast, so I would've thought of that if I were a juror. If she'd been "shot in the heart", she'd have been unable to inform the dispatcher over the phone, due to death.
@@chachadodds5860 Yes, the laws are very similar in NJ. It's extremely difficult to evict someone staying with you OR renting an apartment from you. It can take a year or more. I don't think this man even started a legal eviction against them, though, in this case. He should have.

In my state, if a person is residing in your primary dwelling -- for example, in a house divided into two apartments and you occupy one of them -- it is very easy to evict that person. Most of the major legal protections simply don't apply in that case. If the landlord owns an apartment building as an investment and does not live there, or if he has more than a certain number of units (say 8 or 10) and lives in one of them, then the various tenants' rights ordinances and statutes apply. Eviction can still take place within three to six months, at most. It almost never takes a year to evict anyone who has breached their lease. There would have to be some special circumstance to prevent it.
If someone can stay with you after you've asked them to leave your own residence, then how do you own your residence? You don't.

Cops are bound by a shitty legal system, not sure what they could have done, or what you would have preferred? If they go by the book then nothing helpful in the field is produced, they go off the book and people scream "ABUSE OF POWER", not sure if someone who hates cops can be convinced of anything other than "cops bad".
Lauren wasn't doing anything illegal in front of them and it was all pretty much just "he said she said" verbal abuse at the point for when they showed up, so it's obviously a common run in for the police where nothing really can be produced legally.
I love your videos and case analyses in general. As a former dressage rider, I wanted to chime in and let you know what demanding physical work riding dressage actually is. It takes tremendous control, body awareness and independence of body parts, and also strength, particularly of the core muscles. Is it a sport? I say yes.❤

@@kimberlygabaldon3260 The most important part of any type of equestrian endeavor for me is the actual relationship/ emotional connection between myself and the horse. I have always gone out of my way to show kindness, affection, respect, deep gratitude, and love to them. To answer your question, yes, they do seem to enjoy it. If they didn't, I couldn't enjoy it either.

I couldn't agree with you more if I tried, Dr Grande! A narcissist of that magnitude can drive anyone completely out of their mind for a moment. I don't think Michael's mental health is much of an issue at all now that he has gotten rid of the plague that brought him to this point. I would have been in distress during the trial, too, if I were him. The prospect and possibly of going to jail for years because of what these horrible people drove him to do must have caused a great deal of anxiety throughout the trial. I'm glad he didn't end up killing anyone. That's quite a burden to live with no matter how justified it may have been. (At least it would be for me.)

@@princesstiarra8071 That's comparing apples and potatoes. Her ex husband didn't refuse to move out of HER house, and make it necessary for her to move out. She didn't fear for her life either. He left her for another woman, and that is what caused her to lose her mind. She was a woman scorn and completely obsessed with it. Her kids couldn't make her stop raging and screaming profanities to and about their father, no matter how much they cried and begged her. Her rage was more important to her than the wellbeing of her own children. She later blamed HIM for the parental alienation she suffered by acting the way SHE did in the presence of her kids. The fact of the Broderick case is that she snuck into her ex husband's home and killed him and his wife in their sleep. That is not someone who has been pushed into a situation where she lost her mind in the heat and threat of the moment. That is what people do when they want revenge at any cost, even if they have to destroy their own lives and irreparably hurt their own children to get it. Those people are usually narcissists. Betty's behavior, and the way she talked both during and after her trial, had ALL the signs of a narcissism. Narcissism is a permanent personality disorder, not a temporary moment of insanity. I doubt that wanted out of the marriage because Betty was such a reasonable and easy person to deal with. I think falling in love with someone else gave him the courage and support he needed to do what he had wanted to do for a long time.
It takes a unique person to not only stay somewhere they're unwanted, but actively make things worse when they could've worked things out and continued riding the gravy train.
She didn't leave once she was there because she still wanted to board her horses but she paid $5k a month to live in the upstairs apartment, board her horses, and get lessons- even when she stopped getting him because he demoted her to other trainers when he decided she didn't have the talent or capability. Was that so hard of him to give her lessons being paid $5k a month?
Thank you so much for covering this case. I watched the trial and think that Michael's fear was palpable. He Has already lost so much because of the spoiled princess. Prayers for him to be able to enjoy his horses again.

Michael may have snapped and rationalized "it's either her or me" and being falsely accused of child abuse didn't help. It was no doubt the catalyst that sent him over the edge.

Doc - thanks for doing this story! I really felt for Michael and knew that woman was a narcissist personality psychopath and it’s possible he did snap in a psychotic break after such harassment and fear. I didn’t like how the recent 48Hours show portrayed her, but we know who she was here! 😖

Maybe Michael thought Lauren had broken a leg. It's unfortunate, for Michael, law enforcement chose to not do their job but I place more blame on Lauren's father. I suspect that the reason he fought for her to remain at the farm was to keep her away from as many people as possible and especially him. He most likely used his money and threats for her to get her way since she was a child. But that's a horse of a different color
I can simplify this more than you can: Man takes pistol to confrontation with crazy couple to evict them. Couple attacks him, he shoots them in self-defense, and then is forced to plea crazy to avoid New Jersey's insane laws _against_ self-defense, because how dare you say their cops are useless.

Oh man! This case was just on a Dateline or 48 Hours. I can't remember which one....BUT my first thought was that SHE was crazy and HE was innocent! The show I watched did not give any of her background. They painted her as the victim and him as a crazy person. I do believe he is innocent and I feel so bad for what he has gone through. If you own a house/property and you no longer wish to have a tenant or border you should have the legal right to give them notice and make them leave. How was this woman and her boyfriend able to stay, especially when we’re making the owner’s lives miserable.
You're right. He never filed for eviction, though. He should have done that as soon as things started going wrong. If he did, it might have taken years anyway, as there was no restraining order. He should have gotten one of those, too.

If you have no choice, you take in renters to avoid foreclosure. My ex was abusive. I got him out. Roommates have all been great and allow me to keep a house for my kids. You must screen and do background checks. I rent to those on the healing arts or public servants. Good hearted.

Some think that power equals prestige… There is a wise woman who explained the difference… Most of us can tell who is yielding what weapon and why. The farm owner had prestige. The snatch of hair and that bag of skin had a little bit of power because of her daddy.
I can't imagine how many other lifes she has been destroyed..I hope more people come forward, and get justice..she is abusing the legal system because her dad attorney & money..police should take this type of treats seriously, and some law should change to adjust to the most common emotional treats
Thank you, Dr. Todd Grande! It sounds like Lauren's behavior would drive anyone nuts. Michael had repeatedly asked her to leave.
He should have refunded whatever portion of her rent had not been used, obtained a restraining order and had Lauren and Robert removed by police.
The fact that Lauren's family didn't want her around is telling. Michael had called the police on two occasions, and they did nothing. It's hard to blame him for any of it.
Lauren's behavior sounds like what HG Tudor describes as a "Malice Campaign." It's nasty, nasty stuff. HG Tudor has three videos on TH-cam about malice campaigns, (that i know of). They are:
"Malice," "Malice Campaign," and "Ultra Malice." The behavior described could cause just about anyone to lose it, (though it may have been self-defense in Michael's case).
dr grande does a much better job going over the background in this case than the recent 48 hours episode does
