I had a regular sized 3DS, and bought the New 3DS XL when it came out, and I'm really glad I did. Going from the smaller 3DS to the XL was an AWESOME jump. Better graphics, bigger screen so I can see more.. it's great!

To me, -If you have a 3DS or 3DS XL: Don't upgrade unless you want that power or you have amiibo. The 3D works but is still just a gimmick. -If this is your first 3DS console: GO FOR IT. Or as Shia Labeouf would say, "DO IT!!" It is worth it if you are a newcomer.

In my mind the new 3DS is the best console ever made. Nothing can touch it's perfect form factor and function. The best games around and in 3D is simply stunning! We're blessed having Nintendo doing what it does best, everything games.
What bugs me is the 3DSXL is actually too massive. Sure the huge screen is like a godsend compared to the tiny 2DS and old 3DS' ones, but it also makes it super massive and difficult to put in a more confined space (say your pocket or a sports belt), and it feels more tiring trying to hold one than the old one (you'll also feel the same way when you play the old 3DS after having hours on a new 3DSXL, the old one feels so good when you hold it in your hands).
Maybe I'll get a 3DS one of these days to review, plus they do look like so much fun! And kudos Austin Evans for spreading the vid over multiple locations!

if you already have old 3DS, upgrading to New probably not worth it. But if you were like me who had only NDS, I definitely suggest you to buy New 3DS. It could last longer to upcoming games & years.

I really like the New 3DS XL and I personally feel the upgrade was worth it for me. Though I still wish they released the original size New 3DS in North America, the XL screen is growing on me. In my opinion, having a C-stick an ZR and ZL buttons are a minor plus, while the improved 3D is a MAJOR plus. I found myself playing my old 3DS in 2D nearly always but now I can finally enjoy all of these games in 3D without the headache and/or having to hold it an exact distance from my face. Also, original DS games play more clearly than they did on the old 3DS.
since I caught pokemon go fever I am so craving paying a hand held pokemon game. I'm buying a Nintendo 3ds real late but looking games look real cheap now and I have so many titles to choose from.

It's totally worth it, i bought 3ds xl a week ago and i haven't used my psvita ever since. I was amazed by nintendo's 3d tech the only thing that kept me away from picking up 3ds was selection of games but i was so wrong man it has some of the coolest games
My main problem with the system aside from the lack of an AC adapter, is that there are games being developed for it that will not even work on the current 3DS. So why not call it something else? Now people are either going to be forced to upgrade or not get the new game or buy the new game without understanding that it won't work on their current 3DS or 3DS XL.
Exactly there are going to be a lot of pissed off parents and upset kids this year. Another thing that makes the no AC adapter worse is using 3rd party Chargers void your DS' warranty. And after working in retail for 7 years now I can tell you that retailers will run out of first party chargers before they run out of the new 3DS.
The only game we know about that's exclusive to the system is Xenoblades which is also on the Wii/Wii-U, i highly doubt Nintendo will abandon 50+ million 3DS's, the DSi also had some exclusives but i couldn't even tell you what they're called lol.
It's a slippery slope. It's one now but in 2-4 years It could be more. The fact that the hardware specs have been upgraded to be able to make games that can do more should be an indication of what their plans are. Imagine if if Sony or Microsoft decided to upgrade the ps4 or Xbox Ones specs in 4 or 5 years so current games can run more smoothly and had an exclusive game that only work on the new system. People would be livid. my problem is just call it something else because a lot of people are going to be confused and pissed about this in the coming years but mainly parents.
corey williams I think all future 3DS games are still compatible on the older version, just run a bit better on the new one. Now with the inclusion of the second 'analog stick' and shoulder buttons, that could pose a problem.

Misongie I hate that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is exclusive to the N3DS :c It's either Nintendo has forgotten about the Circle Pad Pro or they want more sales. The former is very unlikely.
Lucrative Lunatic The reason that they put xenoblade on the new 3ds is because of the extra fire power. The old 3ds isn't powerful enough to handle it. Even the on the new 3ds they struggled to make it.
Xenoblade Chronicles on the old 3DS would be too laggy to play. The controls are not the only factor, the 3DS is known to be a very weak handheld (I didn't say BAD handheld, I said WEAK) and it is pretty obvious considering that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D had to sacrifice resolution and some other things in order to make it on a handheld.
I used to own an original aqua blue 3DS, then I pre-ordered the New Nintendo 3DS XL because of the new features, exclusivity of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and also my touch screen didn't work properly. It also seemed that my original 3DS was a bit too small for my hands, I was much more comfortable with my New 3DS XL.
I think it is a must have. I have the New 3DS XL and my judge is 10/10. Even though with the NEW 3DS you can change patterns and designs, I just like using bigger screens and it is a better control for my hands.

Yes its worth it. Internet connections are alot faster The system is alot faster Games are smoother (If they are made to use the extra ram/cpu/gpu power the n3ds provides) for example monster hunter C stick is great the first year of use and can be easily replaced by a PSP 1000 cap to make it even better
The reason I was saying it was because the NX will most likely be a handheld type device, that will also be playable like a console on the TV. It will most likely be backwards compatible with digital games (not physical copies of games since it will be cartridge based) that you purchased via the online store. Nintendo is finally going to release the details within a few days. So this is why I'm holding off on buying the 3DS XL and the Wii U..but we'll know for sure pretty soon.

I'm so happy that Nintendo improve the battery life on this handheld console because the very first 3DS the battery life wasn't all that great, plus the graphics and the 3D don't give you a headache no more.
I'm excited because this means prices on used 3DS originals and 3DS XLs will be going DOWN. I still haven't picked one up, and I was eyeing the 2DS for a while, but I may pick up a 3DS used from a local game shop or on Craigslist pretty soon. I liken the difference between the 3DS XL and the New 3DS XL (man, that's a dumb name choice, but what're you going to do?) to the difference between an iPhone X and an iPhone XS (where X is whatever the current model is). Marginally improved internals, some new features, but largely unchanged. I think I'll stick with the original 3DS (as I mentioned above) and wait for the next new model to be released.

I still use my original aqua blue 3DS from Christmas 2011. I don't regret getting it. It still works just fine and provides lots of fun on the go. I might get a 2DS, though, since it is a bit worn and those are cheap.
I just bought one last week. I love it but i need to pick up a case for it because it's the special Hyrule Edition and i'm super nervous about finger prints, haha. but yeah, Canada for some reason just has a ton of these still chilling on the shelves, haha. It was on sale that day and i traded in some games as well so in total i only had to spend 158.00 on it which in american is 120.00 believe XD It was a good day...

Next year is still a good ways off, and the NX is about as enigmatic as D.B. Cooper. Knowing Nintendo, 'next year' could be fucking 2019. Never take a company at its word for releasing something, ESPECIALLY if it's Nintendo and ESPECIALLY if it's a console. $200 isn't a lot of money, that's like only half a minimum wage paycheck. Trust me, the head tracking alone makes it worth it. 3D is actually comfortable and usable now. I hated 3D and never used it before, I thought it was a stupid gimmick. Now I actually enjoy it.
I get that this video is over two years old, but the comment is still relevant. I have a 3DS XL that I bought new in 2013. I have since carried it with me nearly everywhere over the past 5 years. It has been my sidekick and has thousands of hours of gameplay on it. It has been well cared for and at this time, I still see no need in "upgrading" to the new system. That said, I am in love with the SNES model.

Old 3DS games aren't guaranteed to work right at the higher clock speed, so the games run at the older spec, but with some simple softmodding you can make them work at the New 3DS clock speed and with some vigorous softmodding you can utilize the L2 cache

The thing that bugs me is that the little part sticking out from the top screen of the 3ds is gone, so if you close it, there's a visible slit down the middle

To be honest, I'm kind of stuck when it comes to which 3DS is the best. I really like the changeable faceplates and mat finish of the regular New 3DS, but I also LOVE the slick, premium design of the New 3DS XL. I'm also a huge fan of some of the special editions of the New 2DS XL, so it's just up to which one I can find for the cheapest second-hand.
I know it's been over 2 years on but did you manage to get the one you wanted? I only very recently upgraded from a dsi, and nowadays there's only about 20 bucks difference between all the new 3ds models so I just went for a metallic blue XL and I do not regret it one bit. Still such an amazing handheld to this day!
I got one for my birthday a couple of years back, and I love it. I've bought SO many games and themes for it, and the only issue I've had with it is that my L button is broken up a little, but it still works. The transfer from my old Yoshi 3ds took about 8 hours but it was worth it, and now it's my favorite console of all time. I recommend it, but an old 3ds, 2ds, or new 2ds are good too.

I really like the New 3DS XL and I personally feel the upgrade was worth it for me. Though I still wish they released the original size New 3DS in North America, the XL screen is growing on me. In my opinion, having a C-stick an ZR and ZL buttons are a minor plus, while the improved 3D is a MAJOR plus. I found myself playing my old 3DS in 2D nearly always but now I can finally enjoy all of these games in 3D without the headache and/or having to hold it an exact distance from my face. Also, original DS games play more clearly than they did on the old 3DS.
since I caught pokemon go fever I am so craving paying a hand held pokemon game. I'm buying a Nintendo 3ds real late but looking games look real cheap now and I have so many titles to choose from.

It's totally worth it, i bought 3ds xl a week ago and i haven't used my psvita ever since. I was amazed by nintendo's 3d tech the only thing that kept me away from picking up 3ds was selection of games but i was so wrong man it has some of the coolest games

My main problem with the system aside from the lack of an AC adapter, is that there are games being developed for it that will not even work on the current 3DS. So why not call it something else? Now people are either going to be forced to upgrade or not get the new game or buy the new game without understanding that it won't work on their current 3DS or 3DS XL.
DSi was slightly confusing. New 3DS is way worse.
Exactly there are going to be a lot of pissed off parents and upset kids this year. Another thing that makes the no AC adapter worse is using 3rd party Chargers void your DS' warranty. And after working in retail for 7 years now I can tell you that retailers will run out of first party chargers before they run out of the new 3DS.
The only game we know about that's exclusive to the system is Xenoblades which is also on the Wii/Wii-U, i highly doubt Nintendo will abandon 50+ million 3DS's, the DSi also had some exclusives but i couldn't even tell you what they're called lol.
It's a slippery slope. It's one now but in 2-4 years It could be more. The fact that the hardware specs have been upgraded to be able to make games that can do more should be an indication of what their plans are. Imagine if if Sony or Microsoft decided to upgrade the ps4 or Xbox Ones specs in 4 or 5 years so current games can run more smoothly and had an exclusive game that only work on the new system. People would be livid. my problem is just call it something else because a lot of people are going to be confused and pissed about this in the coming years but mainly parents.

I think all future 3DS games are still compatible on the older version, just run a bit better on the new one. Now with the inclusion of the second 'analog stick' and shoulder buttons, that could pose a problem.

Xenoblade Chronicles on the old 3DS would be too laggy to play. The controls are not the only factor, the 3DS is known to be a very weak handheld (I didn't say BAD handheld, I said WEAK) and it is pretty obvious considering that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D had to sacrifice resolution and some other things in order to make it on a handheld.

It's been 5 years and I can tell you the 3ds is still badass
I used to own an original aqua blue 3DS, then I pre-ordered the New Nintendo 3DS XL because of the new features, exclusivity of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and also my touch screen didn't work properly. It also seemed that my original 3DS was a bit too small for my hands, I was much more comfortable with my New 3DS XL.

I think it is a must have. I have the New 3DS XL and my judge is 10/10. Even though with the NEW 3DS you can change patterns and designs, I just like using bigger screens and it is a better control for my hands.
As someone who just bought one recently, it's still worth it nearing 2022.

The reason I was saying it was because the NX will most likely be a handheld type device, that will also be playable like a console on the TV. It will most likely be backwards compatible with digital games (not physical copies of games since it will be cartridge based) that you purchased via the online store. Nintendo is finally going to release the details within a few days. So this is why I'm holding off on buying the 3DS XL and the Wii U..but we'll know for sure pretty soon.

I'm so happy that Nintendo improve the battery life on this handheld console because the very first 3DS the battery life wasn't all that great, plus the graphics and the 3D don't give you a headache no more.

I liken the difference between the 3DS XL and the New 3DS XL (man, that's a dumb name choice, but what're you going to do?) to the difference between an iPhone X and an iPhone XS (where X is whatever the current model is). Marginally improved internals, some new features, but largely unchanged. I think I'll stick with the original 3DS (as I mentioned above) and wait for the next new model to be released.

Next year is still a good ways off, and the NX is about as enigmatic as D.B. Cooper. Knowing Nintendo, 'next year' could be fucking 2019. Never take a company at its word for releasing something, ESPECIALLY if it's Nintendo and ESPECIALLY if it's a console. $200 isn't a lot of money, that's like only half a minimum wage paycheck. Trust me, the head tracking alone makes it worth it. 3D is actually comfortable and usable now. I hated 3D and never used it before, I thought it was a stupid gimmick. Now I actually enjoy it.

I get that this video is over two years old, but the comment is still relevant. I have a 3DS XL that I bought new in 2013. I have since carried it with me nearly everywhere over the past 5 years. It has been my sidekick and has thousands of hours of gameplay on it. It has been well cared for and at this time, I still see no need in "upgrading" to the new system. That said, I am in love with the SNES model.

This is pissing me off because I got a 2DS a few months ago without realizing Nintendo would only be releasing games like Super Mario World, The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, and A Link to the Past for only the new 3DS. Old 3DS games aren't guaranteed to work right at the higher clock speed, so the games run at the older spec, but with some simple softmodding you can make them work at the New 3DS clock speed and with some vigorous softmodding you can utilize the L2 cache

The thing that bugs me is that the little part sticking out from the top screen of the 3ds is gone, so if you close it, there's a visible slit down the middle

To be honest, I'm kind of stuck when it comes to which 3DS is the best. I really like the changeable faceplates and mat finish of the regular New 3DS, but I also LOVE the slick, premium design of the New 3DS XL. I'm also a huge fan of some of the special editions of the New 2DS XL, so it's just up to which one I can find for the cheapest second-hand.
I know it's been over 2 years on but did you manage to get the one you wanted? I only very recently upgraded from a dsi, and nowadays there's only about 20 bucks difference between all the new 3ds models so I just went for a metallic blue XL and I do not regret it one bit. Still such an amazing handheld to this day!

I got one for my birthday a couple of years back, and I love it. I've bought SO many games and themes for it, and the only issue I've had with it is that my L button is broken up a little, but it still works. The transfer from my old Yoshi 3ds took about 8 hours but it was worth it, and now it's my favorite console of all time. I recommend it, but an old 3ds, 2ds, or new 2ds are good too.
If you have a huge digital download Library, this is good. I only get a new one when mine breaks, so having this speed of downloads is awesome.
