Two years old, but just watched it. I like all the guys here individually. They’re each talented at their own thing, oftentimes on their own pod. But this podcast especially struggles a bit whenever bill is absent. He enjoys leading the conversation and serves as the best foil for the others. He’s not highbrow and prioritizes coming at movies out of pure fandom rather than academically. Sometimes the other ringer guys allow their post grad degrees to show a little too much.
But overall these guys are all funny and interesting. Maybe if this 3 do more together, they’ll improve their chemistry.

In the book Belford says he knew right away he was a scammer at the Vegas party - "no one who made his own money would do this". Interesting happening all around, and this conversation made me look at the movie differently - i started rewatching it not as a comedy but as savage truth, and it has a totally different tone. It's fucking psychotic.

My coworker mentioned she walked in on her 15 year old son watching it and given it was an 18+ rated film she asked if it was really appropriate for him to watch but then shrugged and let him watch it anyway. 😂

      Depends how you parent.
Could be a good opportunity to start a conversation with them after the movie. (Providing they are of an appropriate age, 15 and over I’d say).
What did you think of the film? So you think they are good people? Is that the kind of person you want to be? What do you think are the ramifications of their crimes on people? How do you feel about the way they treated/spoke about women? Etc etc
But if you leave movies and tv to raise your kids… we’ll that’s on you, not the film makers. It’s not Scorsese’s job to teach your kids right from wrong.

This film is absolutely better the 2nd and 3rd time compared to the 1st time. It’s almost a visual overload at first. I left the theater knowing that it was a good movie, but my brain was scrambled. It didn’t help that I sat next to a 80 year old grandpa that I could sense him being uncomfortable during most of the debauchery, which is shown throughout the film lol.
I’ve seen enough films that I knew I needed to not even put a rating (0-4 stars) until I saw it again at home by myself and I was correct in doing that. 1st viewing I would of given it a 2.5 stars. Now it’s a solid 3.5. I only give out 4 stars for the best of the best. It must be pitch perfect and the type of film that is constantly in your brain for the next few days. I’ve probably given 4 stars under 25 times and have watched over 2,500 films so far.

From what I understood, Boiler Room takes place slightly earlier, chronicling the misdealings and pump/dump strategies of D.H. Blair, with Ben Affleck being based off of top salesman Al Palagonia: "The biggest legend of the bucket-shop world may be Al Palagonia, the top salesman at now-defunct D.H. Blair. “Al would run the morning meeting, kind of like Ben Affleck in the movie,” recalled one former Blair broker. “He’d play the Rocky theme, just trying to get everyone all pumped up to get on the phones.”"

Goodfellas set in Wall St. You root for awful people at first, because Scorsese makes it enticing, then he pulls the rug out and says, this is what you get for entering the dark side. The difference is that you do have someone to root for (Kyle Chandler's character). Growing up in NYC, I assume the 2 groups he despises the most are mafia and Wall St, and he went after both.

The actress who was turned down for the Margo Robbie role claimed that she didnt get the part because of her age. She interprated to sophisticated for the part as to old for the part. More likely they were being kind and that she was not good in that role. Its clear as anything that Margo Robbie blew her out of the water. The fact that this actress was cast in another role as DiCaprios first wife is proof that they liked her. How ungreatfull of her to come up with excuses for not getting the part. She simply lost out to a better actress. She should get over herself.

Yeah, I didn’t like this movie at all. All I could think of was Goodfellas as I watched. It just seemed like he took the Goodfellas template and retold the story of the Wall Street Henry Hill. I found it incredibly boring.

Imagine living in a world where you're not sure if you should like a movie, or a tv show, or a band, or a podcast because someone else, who's not exactly like you, happens to like it too!...What's next, people will start being fired, banned, and censored for thinking for themselves?!...Oh wait...

but Goodfellas is an all-timer, so a shadow below that is pretty great. There's a lot of trash out there that doesn't compare. I've seen the movie Hustlers with J-Lo on 'best of the decades' lists.

35:56 I said the same thing as Rusillo when I first saw it! I love Scorsese, and this might be my favorite movie of the decade, but the soundtrack is self-indulgent. I like Howlin' Wolf and Bo Didley songs, but they feel like they're filtering through Scorsese's own POV instead of the narrator's. We get it, Marty! We all know how much you love the blues, boogaloo, and the Stones, but their songs don't belong on every soundtrack.

Also he says, “people don’t think of Scorsese movies as funny…” Ummmm, what? Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino all have many extremely funny scenes. Tarantino said when he saw Raging Bull in the theater, had the audience reaction during the film been recorded, one would assume the audience was watching a comedy based off of all the laughter. He has two great comedies, King of Comedy and After Hours.
