Agree. Watched this movie as a child 100 times and never once thought about race outside of some of the direct jokes Det. Foley says in the movie. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the only thing people see are the color of one's skin, and interpret every single facet of life in those terms.
I agree. I’ve watched it 100 times from the age of 10 to 47. I’ve never once thought anything about race in any of this. There’s no need to even bring it up. Why can you just enjoy a damn movie than make it about some woke bullshit agenda?!? That is just stupid and irresponsible.
@joe G first off, woke isnt a bad or negative thing and merely means being aware of social imjustices and discrimination. Thats it. Unfortunately conservatives and people on the right have corrupted and weaponized the word to mean anything that offends their racist, sexist or homophobic beliefs. Second, you think having an open discussion about race in some parts of this podcast is irresponsible?? How exactly does that hurt someone? I think you've been dippin in the MAGA cesspool a little too much because only racists and bigots would and have a problem with this podcast discussing this topic. I mean seriously, its a movie about a BLACK Detroit cop investigating his friends murder in the whitest city in california, Beverly Hills. It would be ridiculous and irresponsible to not discuss the racial aspect of this movie, especially considering the current plague of rampant racism and anti wokeness infesting this country right now by people like you. BTW, people who accuse podcasts and other forms of entertainment with having an, "agenda" are usually the ones with the actual agendas. Why does a black man talking about a movie, and giving his point of view, trigger you so much? Ask yourself that.
@@unropednope4644 sorry. Yes woke is a terrible thing. Sorry but even a lot of democrats roll their eyes at a lot of the policies and counter-culturistic things that has came from it. Has nothing to do with a black man talking about a movie----that's ignorance on your part. The "eye roll" comes in the fact NOT ALL WHITE PEOPLE need to be re-visiting things in a movie that we never needed to see about the movie in the first place. What ever happened to "hey this is a great movie!" WITHOUT having to draw underlying hypothesis of involving racial aspects in movies?!? In my opinion, those things serve NO PURPOSE. Just sit back, watch the movie, and enjoy it. Just think it's illogical and irrational to bring it up when ALL most folks want to do is just go in and watch a movie and enjoy it. Black or white----doesn't matter. We don't always have to make everything about color.
Listening to them talk about Axel being gay feels like the 80s all over again 😂 "what? You have a friend, who is a boy, who you're close with? You're gay!" The reason Axel and Jenny didn't get together is because of race.
I haven't seen this movie in some time, but I don't recall any scene where Eddie Murphy came off as gay. At least when he wasn't using that as a character to gain access somewhere or to someone.
I feel like we missed out on a good deep dive on the character Axel Foley and the movie BHC for a 2019 discussion on a black movie star in an out of touch 1980's movie. Both can be true but the former would fit better as the focus of a podcast called the rewatchables
In the 82-84 run, you skipped Delirious. VERY important in his career. P.S. Jenny was hot AF!! They originally wanted her to be a love interest for Axel but changed that aspect of her because Axel is now black. I DO get what you mean about the acting.
Regarding the Michael Jackson thriller jacket scene, the character of Axel probably didn't see that very often if at all in Detroit. He probably just thought it was funny and weird.
A minor plot hole that always bothered me:how was Axl going to pay for the hotel room? The Beverly Hills police force ends up taking care of it, but he would owed a couple grand by the time he leaves.
Another minor plot hole: How did the Beverly Hills police dispatchers keep track of their police vehicles around town? There was no GPS tracking back in the mid-80's.
Holy shit...every time this pod went back to 'here is a funny observation...' the Wesley guy was like "BECAUSE BEING BLACK...." and proceeds to make sweeping judgements on the negative aspects of white people of the 80s. We get it. It doesn't have to be the whole podcast as there are so many other ways to take this.
This podcast should've been a A+ but Wesley brought it down to C+/B-. All he talks about is racism and sexism and doesn't push the conversation forward or contribute in any meaningful way. This dude is OBSESSED with racism.
I love the Rewatchables but they just spent about an hour of the 90mins discussing the racial and homophobic politics of a movie made in 1984. Im highly liberal and support all equality but at some point it doesn’t make sense to go back and legislate movies or art that we’re appropriate for the time. They are taking all the joy out of reminiscing on the amazing movies by over focusing on how it plays in today’s context.
Okay, so I just discovered a very obscure fact about Wesley Morris... he voiced a character on the animated series, Double Dragon back in the early 90s. Wtf? Anyone else know this? Lol
eddie would have a bit too young for lethal weapon. even tho mel gibson was only like 30, the character was supposed to be older and mel looked older he could have been in die hard but bruce willis was really great in it. tango & cash might have been a better movie if eddie played the kurt russell part
I think it's a shame so much time is spent on the matter of 'Was Axel Foley Gay'. To be clear, I don't mind whether he is or isn't. It won't make me see the film in a different light or like it any more or less. But I have to state the obvious here: do all four of these people discussing the film forget that this is a trilogy? As much as they/we may want to forget the third one as it clearly was nowhere near as good as I or II, one thing in Beverly Hills Cop III is the flirting/chemistry between Axel and the character played by Theresa Randle. So is it a case that Axel is gay in Beverly Hills Cop I but straight (or bi maybe?) by the time of Beverly Hills Cop III? Maybe you're reading way too much into way too little as far as a movie where the main character has a job to do and sets out to do that. Take the Jason Bourne films. If you didn't see the first or second where there is the romantic element and instead saw the third one (the Bourne Ultimatum) or/and the last one (Jason Bourne) with Matt Damon, to the best of my recollection there's little to nothing at all about any romance in either. So if/when Bill Simmons does a rewatchable on either of those movies, will he/Wesley Morris be questioning Jason Bourne's sexuality for lack of seeing him getting it on with anyone - woman or man - in the film?
1:07:03 - "What '80s movie do you wish Eddie was the star of is a fun game." _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_ . He should've done this instead of _Beverly Hills Cop II_ .

You're gay!"
The reason Axel and Jenny didn't get together is because of race.
We need Taxi Driver Re
More Wesley please.
No
This guy is so annoying!
I haven't seen this movie in some time, but I don't recall any scene where Eddie Murphy came off as gay. At least when he wasn't using that as a character to gain access somewhere or to someone.
Eddie didn't. Just that this guy projected himself onto the character of Axel Foley.
A lot of gay ppl in the media are trying to pull that stunt. Constantly trying to inject homosexuality into everything
Wesley, you don't have to talk EVERY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! damn
He has NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SENSEEEEEEEEEE of his doing or saying too much. Like at all
AGREEEEEEEEED!!!!!
But he wants to?
Is that a 10,000 Maniacs shirt?
A minor plot hole that always bothered me:how was Axl going to pay for the hotel room? The Beverly Hills police force ends up taking care of it, but he would owed a couple grand by the time he leaves.
Hotels may comp rooms for police/public safety/government
@@HarrisonHollers I seriously doubt he had that in mind. If he did, why a scam his way into it. Again, it's a plot hole for a comedy. No biggie
@@MrOctober44it's not a plot hole Einstein - he was going to skip out and not pay the bill . It was obvious
Another minor plot hole: How did the Beverly Hills police dispatchers keep track of their police vehicles around town? There was no GPS tracking back in the mid-80's.
I made it all the way to 59:16 before I had enough...Did I win?!
I don’t care what anyone says but Eddie Murphy should’ve been in The Expendables.
Murphy was probably 22 at the time of filming.
Steven Berkoff is a great bad guy but he is basically a lesser Terence Stamp
This podcast should've been a A+ but Wesley brought it down to C+/B-. All he talks about is racism and sexism and doesn't push the conversation forward or contribute in any meaningful way. This dude is OBSESSED with racism.
typical lefti who works for New York Times
Stop you guys!!!! Robin Williams!!! The GOAT!!!
Axel gets a female love interest in part 3 . Don’t think he was gay
Yeah they forgot about 3 - well everyone did lol
I love the Rewatchables but they just spent about an hour of the 90mins discussing the racial and homophobic politics of a movie made in 1984. Im highly liberal and support all equality but at some point it doesn’t make sense to go back and legislate movies or art that we’re appropriate for the time. They are taking all the joy out of reminiscing on the amazing movies by over focusing on how it plays in today’s context.
Totally agree. The dude with the beard and all the race talk was annoying
Do shawshank already jeeez
All time pod
Okay, so I just discovered a very obscure fact about Wesley Morris... he voiced a character on the animated series, Double Dragon back in the early 90s. Wtf? Anyone else know this? Lol
I cant stand Wesley
eddie would have a bit too young for lethal weapon. even tho mel gibson was only like 30, the character was supposed to be older and mel looked older
he could have been in die hard but bruce willis was really great in it.
tango & cash might have been a better movie if eddie played the kurt russell part
Wesley lookin' swole af. Took that Pulitizer money and spent it on a David Barton membership.
Wesley Morris. Why did you have to let us know about your Eddie Murphy fantasy? enoughalready
Whenever they do a film staring a black person they call Wesley .so like 2
let's see any of these guys make a movie.........
"He did Scent of A Woman!" and right there Bill lost all credibility as a movie critic lol
Wesley | Let's go back to driving in the car with Jerry Seinfeld and how much fun that was.
Jerry | Not that there's anything wrong with that.
you guys are sleeping on lethal weapon
Robin Williams
richard pryor gets left out of this conversation. before eddie there was only neil simon??? come on
Please replace the guy on the left that laughs at his own comments Everytime.
Where is the Inspector Todd love?
1:07:03 - "What '80s movie do you wish Eddie was the star of is a fun game." _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_ . He should've done this instead of _Beverly Hills Cop II_ .
