Well as a Christian I feel that he gave an objective view, though the Amelekites were very problematic to Israel because they attacked them a numbet of times and even at their vulnerable circumstances. Maby I can explain a Christian understanding of Gods instruction to the Israelites to destroy Amalek ( and other Canaanites). Firstly it must be understood in its context. At the time the Israelites were the only monotheists God promised them the land of Canaan BUT they were instructed to destroy everything why? Because God was concerned that if they did not they would become enamoured with the “things” that the Canaanite’s had and did and this would lead them back to Paganism. The Israelites did NOT follow Gods instructions and as a result regressed to pagan practices. God was constantly having to send prophet after prophet to try and get the Israelites to stop their regression which they did not do which eventually resulting in a the destruction of firstly Israel and then the destruction of Judea ( the Babylonian captivity). So from a Christian understanding the literal instructions to destroy the Amalekites was firstly a specific instruction at a very specific time, and accordingly does not a cannot apply to any other time or place. Secondly on a symbolic level .. Gods instruction to destroy the Amalekites is an instruction to “destroy” those things that would cause a person to commit idolatry for example one should “destroy” an obsession with money to the extent that Money becomes your “God”. Under no circumstances can that instruction be utilised today in a literal form against humans as the Amelekites do not exist. Secondly in a symbolic form it would still be incumbent upon ALL monotheists to destroy the “Amelekites” in our personal life being those things that are worshiped other than God - money, power, people, objects etc … in conclusion at least from a Christian perspective the use by Israeli politicians of the Bible to call for the destruction of any humans, especially the old/women/children would be deemed to be outright murder which is a breach of one of the 10 commandments and mortal sin (which would amount to destroying the personal relationship between God and the person), which would lead to eternal damnation.

Maby I can explain a Christian understanding of Gods instruction to the Israelites to destroy Amalek ( and other Canaanites). Firstly it must be understood in its context. At the time the Israelites were the only monotheists God promised them the land of Canaan BUT they were instructed to destroy everything why? Because God was concerned that if they did not they would become enamoured with the “things” that the Canaanite’s had and did and this would lead them back to Paganism. The Israelites did NOT follow Gods instructions and as a result regressed to pagan practices. God was constantly having to send prophet after prophet to try and get the Israelites to stop their regression which they did not do which eventually resulting in a the destruction of firstly Israel and then the destruction of Judea ( the Babylonian captivity). So from a Christian understanding the literal instructions to destroy the Amalekites was firstly a specific instruction at a very specific time, and accordingly does not a cannot apply to any other time or place. Secondly on a symbolic level .. Gods instruction to destroy the Amalekites is an instruction to “destroy” those things that would cause a person to commit idolatry for example one should “destroy” an obsession with money to the extent that Money becomes your “God”. Under no circumstances can that instruction be utilised today in a literal form against humans as the Amelekites do not exist. Secondly in a symbolic form it would still be incumbent upon ALL monotheists to destroy the “Amelekites” in our personal life being those things that are worshiped other than God - money, power, people, objects etc … in conclusion at least from a Christian perspective the use by Israeli politicians of the Bible to call for the destruction of any humans, especially the old/women/children would be deemed to be outright murder which is a breach of one of the 10 commandments and mortal sin (which would amount to destroying the personal relationship between God and the person), which would lead to eternal damnation.
