I am really enjoying your channel. I just bought a 2001 Honda CRV. I have always wanted a Honda and now at 73 I finally have one. A few years ago I was traveling across country primitive camping and hiking. I have been unable to do this since 2019. I am so excited to transform my Honda into my travel and camp mobile. :) Thank you for giving me some awesome ideas. Arla
I had all ready decided to keep the seat when I saw your videos. You can sit and relax, read, watch videos and I use it to sit and brush my teeth . Another thing is, it makes is easier to roll out of bed, put your shoes on and step outside. I put up my shower tent with a bamboo floor and my port a potty close to the door for my restroom needs.
For my needs, you are so right about the space to sit. I know this is old but thought I would reach out. I haven't used mine yet, but I took the 2nd and 3rd row seats out of my Pilot. What I did was turn the front row passenger seat around. It took some work, but and switch it pretty easy.
Got a good idea for a rear table to make a kitchen area...simply slide a 6 foot 1/2" thick plywood between your mattress and bunk base board that you can slide out 2/3 of the way out the rear of vehicle and attach with a drop pin a single 2x4 leg to stabilize the outside end. BOOM outdoor kitchen.
Brad, just want to say thanks for your innovative approach to mobile life and your detailed how to videos. Last summer I moved into my 2006 Honda CRV using almost your exact design and it’s changed my life completely. I feel freer than ever before to pursue my dreams. Thanks for the inspiration and the motivation! Wondering how you’re doing. Haven’t seen a video in a while. Hope everything is alright. Be well friend.
I have a 2013 Subaru Forrester that I'd love to convert. I thought I needed a van but after looking at your build, I think I could do just as well in my "paid for" Subaru! Thanks for your clear and simple explanation.
That is an amazing and awesome build for a small vehicle. I was stuck on the video for a while seeing how you greatly utilized the space to the max. Great Job.
Your space , your build, it fits your life style perfect. I love how you always keep it real and to the point. Your simplicity in Life is a reflection of who you are. I enjoyed the video. Take care and God Bless You.
Although nomadic lifestyle is not for me, but I do enjoy camping with family, and always watch them with much enthusiasm. I am impressed by creativity and ingenuity of folks like yourself, who have made a home away from home. Thanks for sharing.
I have a 2002 Rav4 AWD, similar to your Honda CRV, and your build is what I'm going to use. My back seats are a 50/50 split so a 25" wide trifold mattress works perfectly. So many of the large platform builds close off under the floor storage, especially the spare tire area. Both our cars have the spare outside, so that frees up valuable inside storage.
I definitely need a chair in mine. I'm thinking about putting the bed on top of the chair, so I can build the other side with kitchen/storage, etc. In other words, the bed would be a tri-fold mattress that gets stowed when I'm using the chair. Then at bedtime, fold down the chair and put the bed on top of it with a fold-down hinged platform and the fold-up mattress on top. Then, I don't have to have so much space dedicated to a bed 24/7. Could be a bit of a pain to deal with every night, but I need a toilet accessible all the time (old lady here haha). Such a puzzle to figure out for all of our different wants/needs. But, I'm with you - gotta have a chair.
Very similar to how my ‘04 CRV is laid out. My next project on it is to see if I can replace the rear door interior panel with a home made panel that will have a drop down table on it. I purchased the rear side door window shades/screens on your earlier recommendation and I’m really happy with them. One simple suggestion for yours is to add a set of the door rain guards to go above the windows. It gives you some constant air flow when you are away from the vehicle without letting rain in or giving away the fact that your windows are all down an inch or two. The rear door screens still fit over them fine so they still work as before. They can be pricey to buy but I got a set off a CRV in a junk yard (along with a bug deflector for the hood) for about $25. They slice off easy with a craft knife and then clean off the old foam tape and buy a new roll of it to stick them on your doors. 👍🏻
Again, excellent video bro! Great space utilization especially for your setup! Your right, what's important is kind of customizing a space saving design for your particular setup or goal. There is enough room for whatever the goal is, but we just Tetris out the storage for full space utilization. Y'all know I built my crv camper, but just coming from a different end goal, where I need a two person sleeper. I love seeing how everyone utilizes their space for all kinds of suv camper build, but this guy is especially great with using low cost practical stuff for his build, and it looks amazing!
This is great! My build from Day 1 has been a side-by-side similar to yours for the same reasons, with the main difference being that my bed has traditionally been on my driver's side. I even have the same organizer hanging on the the back of my passenger seat! It gives me what is essentially a living room/dining table/work desk space all in one. Can't wait to watch your cooking video!
I've followed this approach with a removable box in the trunk thathas the one side 28 inch platform and kept the double seats in. Your videos have been a good eye opener, especially the lounge area, for my camping needs. Cheers!
2 things...I think you have very valid points about use-ability if living in your rig. The other thing is I think this applies very much to SUV or truck camper builds. Have never done that small of a build so I might be biased or...blessed and blind but I really like my platform with the drawers. I built it to be able to access things if it was raining...its a pain in the ass but can be done.
I have a 2019 Honda HRV and this video opened my eyes! Of course! The split seats. I can fold the large one down only and cut my foam mattress down. Brilliance! My seats do the same fold up thing but in the opposite direction. Still space for emergency toilet stops though. Will buy that portable toilet. Love yr vids!!
I had to take all the seats and discovered that my camp chair just like that one fits perfectly lol 😂! I’m 5’1 I can go small . My dog however is a gs . He’s a good 90 lbs . Need as much floor space as possible . I love the bins as your platform. I do need to level my floor so I will need that . On my planning rt now ! So excited!
I have a 2003 Honda CRV that I am planning to convert into a temporary camper. Relocating from New York to California, I’ve never been camping before, and I am planning to do some traveling and campaign for the first time ever, God help me! Lol. Have you ever camped in Cali? I’ll check out some of your videos for some first time camping tips. But I got some good ideas from your videos. Thanks for that. God bless you bro!
Love your videos! I like the practical & functional ideas. I have started experimenting with my 2011 CRV. So far I have kept the back seat intact and figured out how to build up the space in order to have a flat & narrow sleeping area using a sleeping pad. My back seat doesn't fold completely flat so that's why the lower area needs to be built up. It's a work in progress and there will be tweaking. I have a beach chair with short legs which fits quite well beside the "bed" and allows for a different option. I rigged up a screen for one of the windows and attached it with magnets; it stayed up all night and no bugs got in! It's fun for me to try different ways to make this tiny camper the most functional.
I have a traditional build platform on my Ford Escape right now but I'm realizing that it does take up a lot of space and I have to keep folding the platform when I want to lounge. Will modify mine soon to look like yours. Thank you for showing us your build!
Good design for one person, many platform designs are for one person only too. Awesome idea about replacing the seat with a camp chair! Better if everything has 2 jobs :-)
I’ve been thinking about this too!! Thanks for the encouragement. I may start from the upcoming trail and continue in the SUV camper afterwards. Cheers!
I have a 2013 chevy equinox. Yours looks a little wider than mine. I did take out the back seat because it was all one piece. I have my 4 inch mattress, 23 in wide, 72 long. Its wrapped in quilts and then put in a zippered vinyl mattress protector. It lays on all my soft stuff and at the head is a tote. I have totes for my other stuff. I'm going to try your set up. Thank you for posting.
I removed both rear seats and use a beach chair I already owned. It has a high back and arms and is super comfortable. I can sit sideways and put my feet up on a cooler, I can face hatch or face forward. Or fold it up and do yoga, use it at beach or anywhere. Very versatile and lightweight. (Save gas mileage.) I agree, if it is just one person makes more sense to use narrow bed and have floorspace. I just received my Coleman converta cot. I can sleep on it or use outdoors as a lounger. I just have to figure out how to raise the legs to fit my bins below.
I have been looking at all the platforms in the back of SUVs and they just couldn’t work for me. I absolutely love what you have done and this would work for me. Thank you for sharing.
Super thoughtful build, makes me re-evaluate my hunt for the perfect, used PMC or minivan and consider my own small SUV instead. Especially since it'll be a good year before going fulltime. One issue for me personally is my manual wheelchair and walker, there just is a lack of space in my current vehicle. But your video gave me a lot to think about, great inspiration. Thanks and greetings from the Burque ☀️
Great video and information. Thanks for sharing. I completely agree with you and plan on using this same style of build in my 2016 Highlander, and leaving that same seat in as my lounge area. Subbed.
Great setup - really nice solutions of transforming the space of CRV - I will make something similar in close future. This lounge space is perfect for me as I will work on my laptop during traveling. I will have to figure out some stable and small bench to place the laptop and probably I will think about extra energy source. Thanks for the video !
Love the build. Yes, headroom is great as some of us are tall. I've watched many builds yet I'm still trying to decide which build I want for my 2013 Honda CRV. Again, great build.
I have a 2017 CRV and this build is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thanks for the video! I am planning to keep the seats in and have purchased a folding single sofa to use as a bed. I hope it works. 💜 from 🇦🇺
Right on! Best of luck with it! I’m sure you’ll make it a cozy little home. Consider subscribing and checking out my other vids if you need any more info. Cheers!
Love your design. Totally agree that it's better than a full platform. But I"m confused, why do you need yet another seat? Can't you just use the front seats to chill?
Im close to being a nomad. I still have my chevy tracker, I bought the hike crew gazebo tent for my living space while boon docking, I bought the same plastic storage drawers but smaller, and bought small sterilite containers with yellow lid, the fold up reliance toilet is my choice i bought the triptips but sent it back to Amazon, to low. Thanks for the update
Cool, i had the same idea! But my back seat can't be removed partially. There are lots of solutions, i plan to make diy foldable seat on passenger side for a lounge.
I had a silver 2002 Honda CRV EX and never saw a car camping video in one. Until after I got my 2014 Fiat 500L 2 months ago. I'm hoping to car camp in my Fiat. I have not camped in my CRV but it was great for hauling things,
I have a 2006 Honda CRV gold and the seats inside are set up the same as this but they're tan leather and if I ever do have to live out of my SUV I'll just completely remove the bigger seats and keep the little one or I might keep it because I have a blow up bed that fits in the back seats perfectly for my height and can fit my three little dogs as well but I like this setup as well and the way that my setup is I can do both if I want to and I like that
Hello, absolutely brilliant ! Just bought a CR-V 2006 last week, and you're very inspiring ! I'm going to try to build an hybrid setup where you may have a full platform or your half bed platform depending on the situation ! Thanks a lot for sharing, I'll do the same while my project is finished, hopefully next month :)
I have a 2009 rav4 that i am trying to camp in. had a friend make the traditional platform, but found it to high to get in and out of bed. did away with that. now have a piece of plywood on a rug on top of folded down seat covered with another rug then my memory foam mattress. would like dirctions on how to construct the shelving at the back and your back door hangings, ect.
Mine is 07 but it's same with the seats I want to do my build no build like you! Seems perfect for what I want! You know if you had someone with you u can take the headrest out of driver seat recline back and recline the back for extra person, anywho, can you tell me how that back shelf is assembled I am really intrigued or perhaps make a video on it?
Thanks so much for sharing about your setup! Definitely my favorite design. Wondering if/what video I can jump to to see your design in "drive mode"? Great videos!!
your awesome man ! thank you. just took all my seats out. i might out the small one back in or get one of those chairs. thanks again! question though!! what about AC? i live in humid florida!!
How's the visibility? I was thinking of a back shelf like you have but unsure. I have an 06 CRV 😁 super glad to find your videos. I have a large dog so my whole backseat came out.
I totally agree with you and have a very similar setup in my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. I do have both my backseats in, one for part of my bed platform and other a seat. Very helpful video, thanks so much. Not to mention the weight of all that wood for a platform.
I just purchased a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan. I am hoping to get my hands on some design files (ideally I can open in TinkerCAD format .stl, .obj or .svg, or any drawings/diagrams/measurements of bed/cabinet/kitchen alternate setups etc) that I can take inspiration from modify to my personal liking to get the best result possible. I thought I might ask if you would be so kind as to forward any design files that you have that may help me, also if you are aware currently of any useful/necessary items for vanlife selling at a really good price/value I would very much appreciate any help/advice you can provide. Thanks and safe travels!
This is nice but impossible for newer model Honda CRVs. Mine is a 2018 and the back seat row cannot be removed (unless unbolted by Honda). And, it does not have a split seat. Therefore, it must have a platform that spans the entire width in order to have a flat sleeping surface.
My rav4 of the same year has a 5050 split and i keep one of the rear seats, then my bed platform folds over whwre the seat lies for a fullsized double bed for me and my girlfriend.
Really weird question but do you still have your measurements and design for your car? I have the same year/model and am struggling with correct measurements.
I been taking alot of things from alot of ppl vids. I don't have any of the back seats because they weren't covered in my son's aunt's barn and try got nasty. Its harder when your in wheelchair and my bff is getting older and can't be doing stuff anymore

I was going to start off with a van as well but I have a Acura MDX that is paid off. I will start here
@@intheopenair3725 hi there just posted two questions here on the video mine is an 07 but very similar
The best vehicle is the one you already have
That is an amazing and awesome build for a small vehicle.
Aw thank you so much! You’re very kind. Glad you’re enjoying the channel
good to see someone else doing their suv the same way I thought was best for an suv build.
I can't describe why exactly but I enjoyed watching your video very much. There's always things to learn new. Thank you!
Thanks soooo much!!
Although nomadic lifestyle is not for me, but I do enjoy camping with family, and always watch them with much enthusiasm. I am impressed by creativity and ingenuity of folks like yourself, who have made a home away from home. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video brother, this is a fantastic and very creative build.
I was just asking this question. Picked up a '05 GX470 and liked the idea of having the 'escape hatch' seat, partial platform setup. THanks for this!
I watch all your videos just for the green twine👍🏼😂🧵
I have a 2002 Rav4 AWD, similar to your Honda CRV, and your build is what I'm going to use. My back seats are a 50/50 split so a 25" wide trifold mattress works perfectly. So many of the large platform builds close off under the floor storage, especially the spare tire area. Both our cars have the spare outside, so that frees up valuable inside storage.
Love the common sense approach. Definitely makes perfect sense.
Thanks!! Glad you find it helpful
Sweet. I'm doing the same set up in my 2003 Mitsubishi Montero. I'm even taking out the third row seat, giving me a basement. Thanks for your videos.
I agree with how you did it. I did a similar one in my minivan. Keep up the great content. Love your enthusiasm
I definitely need a chair in mine. I'm thinking about putting the bed on top of the chair, so I can build the other side with kitchen/storage, etc. In other words, the bed would be a tri-fold mattress that gets stowed when I'm using the chair. But, I'm with you - gotta have a chair.
Very good points about the platform build. If someone can figure out someway to cook on the top, that would make things really neat.
Really great man! Very considered, and I appreciate you expalining your thinking around the build. Top class!!!
Rewatching your videos because they’re just so great! Wanted to remind myself that this is a good option for nomad living, when the time comes 👍
Thanks for the tip. They can be pricey.
That's how I want my SUV... I have a Dodge Journey SUV. Tanks for sharing this.. Giving me ideas,,

I have a YukonXL 2007 and I chose this layout because it worked better for me and much more comfortable… Glad to see it worked better for you as well.
It makes more sense than the platform build out! Great! Thank you!
This is great! My build from Day 1 has been a side-by-side similar to yours for the same reasons, with the main difference being that my bed has traditionally been on my driver's side. WoW! Super educational, thanks for posting.

Can you do a tutorial on propane. Use, transport and the 5lb, 10lb canisters for the CR-V?

The space is unlivable if I can't sit up straight. Great video
I like the way you think!
love your build 👍
The side by side is how I'm going. Have a Toyota Sequoia
Right on!!! You’re gonna love it! Have fun!
Great plan (Could’ve cut back on the number of “kinda”’s though 👀)
Mine is 07 but it's same with the seats I want to do my build no build like you! Seems perfect for what I want! You know if you had someone with you u can take the headrest out of driver seat recline back and recline the back for extra person, anywho, can you tell me how that back shelf is assembled I am really intrigued or perhaps make a video on it?
Thanks so much for sharing about your setup! Definitely my favorite design. Wondering if/what video I can jump to to see your design in "drive mode"? Great videos!!
I’d love to do that style build, but I need a bed for two
how did you remove your backseat and what tools did you use? excellent videos, I'm learning a lot
Nice. Thank you.
Nice set up. That’s how I plan to set up my RAV4. How did you attach the shelf in the back? Is it screwed into the car wall or what?
Great video-- are you still able to turn the third seat and front seat into an extra single bed using the CRV's folding "sleep mode"?
Enjoyed....thank you.
Well... thank YOU!!
your awesome man ! thank you. just took all my seats out. i might out the small one back in or get one of those chairs. thanks again!
question though!! what about AC? i live in humid florida!!
Love it!
You know I have that car wish mine had a sunroof, I wanna built the same type of bed but I can’t tell how you did it.
How's the visibility? I was thinking of a back shelf like you have but unsure. I have an 06 CRV 😁 super glad to find your videos. I have a large dog so my whole backseat came out.
Visibility is fine. For longer trips I remove the back window cover.
Do you have the lay back front seat? Could still have a small extra bed still if so
I totally agree with you and have a very similar setup in my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe. I do have both my backseats in, one for part of my bed platform and other a seat. Very helpful video, thanks so much. Not to mention the weight of all that wood for a platform.
Thanks Tina! Hope you’re having fun in your Santa Fe!!
That's great
This is nice but impossible for newer model Honda CRVs. Mine is a 2018 and the back seat row cannot be removed (unless unbolted by Honda). And, it does not have a split seat. Therefore, it must have a platform that spans the entire width in order to have a flat sleeping surface.
I. Agree.
Thanks Dixie!
My rav4 of the same year has a 5050 split and i keep one of the rear seats, then my bed platform folds over whwre the seat lies for a fullsized double bed for me and my girlfriend.
I wish you could use the passenger front seat and turn it around.
Do you not put links in the description area ? I can’t find them and I thought I heard you say you would share some -
Hi Darlene! They should be there now! Sometimes the links don’t show up right away but I believe I’ve got it resolved. Thanks!
@@intheopenair3725 Thank you !!
Really weird question but do you still have your measurements and design for your car? I have the same year/model and am struggling with correct measurements.
Where did you get your window shades.
I been taking alot of things from alot of ppl vids. I don't have any of the back seats because they weren't covered in my son's aunt's barn and try got nasty. Its harder when your in wheelchair and my bff is getting older and can't be doing stuff anymore
