Hi everyone! Thanks so much for being here. My name is Brad (trail/hiking name: Paddles) Instagram: @intheopenair_
I’ve been living and traveling in my DIY 2004 Honda CR-V Camper Conversion for awhile now. This channel is often about making the best of small spaces (less is more!!) but it’s also geared toward healthy and wholesome adventure in the wild - IN THE OPEN AIR! The freedom and autonomy of life on the road is highly addictive. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and that my channel offers some helpful insight. My videos often reflect what I’ve learned along the way and highlight particular gear and/or build ideas I’ve found to be particularly valuable. Things are always changing, so there’s plenty more to come. Everyday on the road or trail is a new adventure, so stay tuned! I’m so happy to have you along for the journey. Hi everyone! In this video I go over some of the benefits of my “Side by side” Build vs a more traditional Platform build - for SUV / Small Vehicle VAN LIFE! Mine is a 2004 Honda CRV (4x4) but this could work in many other vehicles, including MINI VANS. The trick is to pull out your tape measure and get to work measuring your interior dimensions. Once you’ve done that - look up (on TH-cam) how ...

Please come back!!!!!!
Excellent commentary and brilliant conversion job. Thank you.
I am going to try using the landfill biodegradable, leak-proof bags for my set up. I just can't accept putting an entire plastic bag in the trash every day. Good video, thank you.
Did you take the seat out for the bed?
And some folks say, he's up there still.......
This is garbage. It’s like something in between stealth camper and weekend warrior. Commit to one or the other, or you’ll end up with this crack head type of build. Uncomfortable in the city, and won’t last more than 2 days in the forest.
Like why do you need stealth coverings but you’re clearly living inside with the awning on the roof and the front seat full of garbage.
Need to see what it looks like when it’s actually dark outside. Do the lights show at all?
I would ad also you know the puppy blue training pads I'd put them on the bottom of your toilet or baby dypers from the dollar store do the same thing and Some pine pellets inside your toilet bag eliminates Order PINE PELLETS and yes double up your bag to keep any Orders out then always out in the TRASH keep everything Clean its like eliminating your cat litter or puppy's poop
the quickest way i folund to do your business in a car is to move the front passenger seat all the way foward sit behind that seat place a 12" high folding camp toilet on the floor, line it with double 8 gallon garbage bags put its seat down and just slide off the car seat onto the toilet. A 6' tall 200 pounder can do it that way. wipe yourself tie the bag off and throw in garbage bin. you can leave the toilet on the floor with all your toiletries inside. you can also drape yourself with a pancho or large beach towel for privacy while taking care of business.
We’re gonna need u to come back to TH-cam!😊
For my needs, you are so right about the space to sit. I know this is old but thought I would reach out. I haven't used mine yet, but I took the 2nd and 3rd row seats out of my Pilot. What I did was turn the front row passenger seat around. It took some work, but and switch it pretty easy.
This man is genius! Great video!!!
I am starting my CRV camp life soon and this video has been soooo helpful! I love how neat and organized you are! Great job!
He's definitely wit da💩's so approach him wit cation😂
Where does the girlfriend sleep though?
Your rear view is totally obscured. How do you drive like this?
Why the mask??? Smelly car? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
nice tips, thanks
Was it tough to find water?
I think it's stupid for people to live in a vehicle smaller than a bedroom for one person but you don't see me making a video about it.
It is one way, cooking inside the car messes up sleeping area. All the food residue sticks on the interior. Too many repeated areas, wasting space
U smart
Hi are you still camping?
Could you give me the link for screen window please , Thanks
Do you have more views on this video or miles on that beauty?
Whats the base of ur bed?
I have the newer version. It’s flat and you can raise it to various heights to 15 inches then it locks in place
With that shelf, you would not want to be involved in a head on accident. One is bad enough, but with all those missiles heading for your head will make one worse.
why you don't use the honda picnic table?
are you wearing a mask because of the smell?
Dude..I just found your channel. Are you still traveling?
A wow setuo brother. Did you know about the included crv table? 😊
Thanks for the tour! Really helped me wrap my head around the dimensions.
Great plan (Could’ve cut back on the number of “kinda”’s though 👀)
My rav4 of the same year has a 5050 split and i keep one of the rear seats, then my bed platform folds over whwre the seat lies for a fullsized double bed for me and my girlfriend.
I just subscribe to your video. Great job Sir. It was vanlifer like you that motivated me to turn my Ford Excursion into a weekend vanlifer. Keep up the great work. Iceman. American Legion Rider..
Just discovered your channel and I don't know if you're still monitoring the comments. I had a couple questions about the Heat Shields: do you find the manufacturer is offering a pretty accurate fitting to the window for the specific model of a vehicle? I was originally going to get weathertech, but some videos I've seen show rather glaring gaps around the edges. Also, does the texture of the black material that's made from, help with stealth? Again, with the WeatherTech I was surprised there seems to be a crinkled surface which reflects the light that hits it. Seems to me that would be a dead giveaway even on a dark street. Oh, one more question, how flexible are these shields? I would like to be able to pull down a corner and peek out if I need to, but I've heard that weathertechs are very stiff so that it's not really possible to do that. Thanks! 🙂
Hola , se que ha pasado mucho desde la publicación de este video pero me pienso comprar un crv y viajar a muchos lugares, quiero agradecerte por toda esa información, muchas gracias, saludos desde Bogotá Colombia
You're wearing a mask inside your own vehicle? LOL
Do you think they want to get a ride?beautiful,!.
Thank you! I really like your videos....they are clear simple and effective. And just so you know, it is your honda that drag me to your videos! I will be doing my first car camping for real this summer with my honda civic probably. I might find a good CR-V till them but will see. Thank's again!
good points
Every time I see a CRV conversation into a camper or travelling studio on TH-cam, I wonder how many pounds of STUFF is sitting on the spare tire area. The floor covering that hides the tire is not an especially strong piece of plastic and rug and it covers a large area. You'd have to pull out a heck of a lot of your supplies, probably your bed, and much more to get to the tire. The tools at least are in the side storage areas. Not a nice option in the best of weather, let alone on a bad day. No one EVER mentions this in their videos. Nice and well planned bed, etc. here. Yes ,electric knives are great for cutting all sorts of foam. Happy camping!
The tire is on the back of the car (like a jeep!), the space you’d normally have the spare is a compartment you can put whatever you want in. Some people actually use them as ice chests! -edit for clarity
Are you ok I see you haven't posted anything in two years
Awesome. You have inspired me to do this ☮️🤙🏼👣
Im glad you showed this. I have gallbladder issues. I need to have a bathroom of some sort with me.
I know most people will look for a gas station to dump their precious property.
What year is your crv?
Do have a video on the window insulation covers you pulled off before showing the slip on mesh covers? I have a 01 crv and am stealth living in it. I'm working on a platform set up for sleeping and storage. One thing I think everyone who is camping/living in a vehicle is a portable car battery jump starter and starter fluid. It's already saved me. It was 5 degrees here recently and I left radio on and killed the battery. Scary situation. It fired the car right up. Plugged it back into charging outlet and am ready for the next emergency. Got it at home depot. Worth every penny.
