Not exactly true as far as The Magic Flute is concerned. It was Mozart's and Schikaneder's explicit will to make it a popular show : " it was immediately evident that Mozart and Schikaneder had achieved a great success, the opera drawing immense crowds and reaching hundreds of performances during the 1790s" (scholar Maynard Solomon, quoted by Wikipédia.) But your observation remains accurate for the majority of classical works before the invention of the phonograph!
How much I agree with you... I have been astonished ... hearing Mozart from a purely orchestral standpoint I appreciate even more his cosmic genius. This orchestra is very special indeed.

Mozart always sounds wonderful- as chamber work, you’ve probably got the best way to enjoy the classics now that the opera houses have made it their mission to defile opera with offensive staging as much as possible. Better to hear the music without the distraction of the hideous concentration camp settings and vulgar gestures currently in vogue. Saw Lohengrin last year and Ortrud was lolling on the floor in a dirty slip. Saw Don Giovanni a few years ago and Zerlina and Masetto were in rags. Etc etc
