How Video Games... "WENT WOKE"

- Video Games are often criticized for having "woke" themes. However, that criticism is often void of deeper analysis, so today I wanted to look at the world of video games, the topic of "ESG" and the way in which the industry might have changed as an effort to secure future investment.
Sweet Baby Incorporated, Blackrock, Vanguard... major publishers and development studios all paying lip service to a set of ideals that really (at the end of the day according to the data we can see) don't mean much to any of them.

The broken games makes them not worth buying, the 'woke' in games makes them not even worth pirating.
“Game so bad I wouldn’t play it for free” could be a review for most games these days.
I think it was Assassin's Creed Valhalla, I was listening to a review on launch and the guy said "it's £40" and my brain went "it's not enough".
It took me a whole second to realise what had happened, my brain now literally expects a monetary compensation to play AAA garbage. And apparently, £40/h isn't even enough for my brain.
If you were to tell that to my 16 years old self, he'd laugh at you...
@@OkieDokieSmokie
ouch...but so very fucking true. makes me wonder if feminists attacked gaming out of the very real fear that a good game would be far more interesting than they ever could be.
I nominate this, Top Comment.
The problem is that AAA games have been built on storytelling and politically correct stories are inherently bland...
The irony of these hypocrites trying to be all high and mighty and morally-superior while working with the most morally bankrupt companies on the planet...
And right wingers haven't worked with morally bankrupt companies? Haven't right wingers for decades been all about crushing unions, cutting taxes for the elites, offshoring jobs, bringing back child labor, all so the 1% can become even more wealthy? The alt-right backs the fascist Trump and believes his fake populism and right wingers support the GOP that has done nothing BUT drive policies leading to historic inequality. Corporate servicing Democrats have done the same thing, and when movements like Occupy Wall Street fought against that in the Democratic Party AND the Republican party did right wingers join us on the streets to fight the elites? No, they did not. So spare us, okay?
There is a moral superiority against the fascist movement of racists, misogynists, and bigots led by Trump in this country. Trump and his circle wouldn't spend 5 minutes with any one of his supporters that wasn't also a super wealthy elite, but Trump supporters are too blind to that fact, and he scams them relentlessly with his constant lies.

No the key is to make a good fucking game. You let representation happen naturally.
Given the amount of alienation they've generated by going in this direction, I'd say it produces the opposite effect.
Imagine saying you're against marginalizing groups while marginalizing a group.
Note that players and audiences are weparate in their mind.
@@unnamed715ironic
Those 2 things are not mutually exclusive. Case in point, Baldur's Gate 3.
That's what I've felt for years. Using marginalised groups as check boxes. Tokenism. It feels dishonest, and sometimes you can see it clearly when the writing seems very shoe horned. Hearing they're doing it literally for profit just makes it far worse than virtue signalling. It's a disrespect to the groups they're pretending to care about.
This is definitely it. You can just FEEL the insincerity in it all. Go back and watch a "diverse" movie like The Warriors. Somehow the characters feel natural and they all fit in the world. You can tell the cast wasn't diverse just to check a bunch of boxes but because it fit with the story they wanted to tell. Hell even Demolition Man. Wesley Snipes was the bad guy. Now a days a black actor can't even play a morally ambiguous character, let alone play a villain. A woman can never be portrayed as vulnerable or even as having emotions.
It makes all media feel like it's completely disconnected from reality and it's just so obvious the entire story is to push an agenda rather than to tell a good story.
They basically use the color of their skin for their own benefit. "Hey look, we put a black character, but we don't care much if he's a good or bad character, we just put him in because his skin color is the same as yours and you'll feel identified." Thinking that a person is going to support a product just because they see characters with the same physical features as them, without taking into account the story, the narrative, the quality, is... quite racist. It is thinking that the African American community is basic and easily manipulated.
@@user-en7ll3og6c there's a nuance to it. It used to be they wanted to cast white actors because they didn't believe minority actors could sell. It's always been political that way. That's why there was white washing back then. In my home country in Malaysia, we also have a very, very strong racial distinction when it comes to marketing for a specific race. But the identity dynamics/politics in the US can be a different kind of bizarre.
It just so happens that diversity (and outrage) has also become profitable. So it's a mix of a lot of things. There's those being genuine, and there's exploiters. The end result I assume is almost always about business, less so about social change or engineering.
I've said it over and over for the past few years and not enough people hear me. Corporations do NOT care about you as a human being. You are a life support system for a wallet. If they claim to care its because thats how their marketing team saw a way to make even more money off you. They lie. They lie constantly. If they "go woke" its not because they care, its because some analyst said thats what other successful companies do to increase profits and be more competitive. In real life it doesn't work so well. Disney is losing money. The company that made the new Saints Row was shut down. And the truly woke crowd can see what you are doing and won't fall for it.

Larry Fink recently admitted to massive losses due to ESG scores. I think they are going to roll it back, rebrand, and try again. Same dish different flavor.
Aka DEI
They'll probably drop the environmental stuff (costly but worth the effort) but keep the woke (cheap virtue signalling)
All that matters is the interest rate. The Fed kept rates near zero for over a decade, so it was effectively an infinite well of free money, since the borrowing cost was almost nothing. Now borrowing money is actually expensive and all this ESG pullback is occurring. It's not a coincidence or correlation, it's a direct cause and effect. So while we may want to take a victory lap, this "win" will evaporate as soon as the Fed decides that want to prop up the stock market again.
DEI is about to get phased out.
None of it matters when the FED itself is pushing DIEversity etc. and they generate the very global currency that goes into supply
I used to spend thousands on games and movies. I no longer buy movies and buy maybe 6 games a year on sale. Those games are mostly indie titles.
Same here, I used to play games all the time and enjoy them tremendously. Same with movies. Now I go to the theater maybe once every few years and buy movies even less often than that. My game library is chock-full of unplayed games so I could never buy a new game again and play for the next decade or more. Industry of entertainment is in the toilet... luckily all the old games and movies are on disk or directly downloaded onto my hard drive.
Same. But the main issue isn't "wokeism". It's that AAA games just suck and just recycle old concepts ad nauseam (or are games as a service).
I bought more games as a young adult/teen than I do as an older person. Still a gamer, just they don't make anything really worth buying. Theres 6 months of pay to beta test and then they are just done with the game. They move on to the next thing that will make them more money, besides the micro transactions in the previous game.
I think we need a service where gamers can pay developers directly. And I am not talking about the whole studio but rather a couple of artists. Like linking their patreon to the service and do a background check. If there is no woke-shit tweets or retarded statements on an interview then it's good to go.

There's an additional facet to this story: Due to years of US interest rates being nearly zero, many companies were operating purely on investment capital, not from revenue (called a "zombie company").
The ESG scam seems to have grown alongside that trend, possibly as a means of hiding the insolvency of these zombie companies. This screams textbook "financial bubble", if I ever saw it.
It's also interesting this seemed to start right after the recession in 2008, as though corrupt investment firms needed a new industry to screw over after they tanked the housing market, like locusts moving from one field to the next.
Just glad more people are getting aware of how this ball rolls. Same thing happening with the movie industry, gotta get dem high ESG scores,
i think it will end as a bubble for the entertrainment industry and lots of companies will end bankrupt some day, they are prioritizing investments and ESG scores over their actual consumers. Gamers are just dumb and they don't know the power their wallets hold over the games they play and they live in a buy, complain and then buy the sequel cycle, but some day those companies will lose investments because they have no consumers anymore and that means no revenue, no growth potential and no investments...
@@gab4198 In a way it reminds me of the 2008 financial crisis. You had banks wanting more mortgages from smaller banks so they could make more mortgage backed securities to sell because they were making bank on it. They didn't care if the mortgages were subprime or B rated when they were tossing them all into AAA rated securities, aka guarantees to not default.
Then you had the adjustable rate loans that had reasonable monthly payments for a few years, then they went up exponentially once the adjustable rate kicked in.
But these ESG scores in gaming and the entertainment industry reminds me of 2008 because the sellers (banks, video game companies, production companies etc) have forgotten that the customer is the core part of their business. We have game studios chasing investments, ESG scores, and numbers on spreadsheets instead of looking at actual player/customer engagement.
Then when these game studios have a game that performs bad they can't fathom why. It HAS to be the customer that's wrong. I mean, they're ESG compliant, and have 1.69 gay characters for every straight character, what more could a customer possibly want??
"Corporate Governance" is a terrifying phrase.
It is. The Corporations and Government have gotten WAY to cozy with each other. Same with Government and Social Media Companies have gotten a cozy relationship with each other to squash political dissent with censorship. And the SCOTUSs needs to put an end to it. Cause Government using Corporations as a middle man to push censorship on anyone Governments don’t like is still a complete violation of the 1st Amendment.
The constant use of acronyms really does disconnect us from the true meaning of words.
The other is "public-private partnerships" this is what authoritarians love to have.
Isn't it funny how the people calling everyone "fascist", are in fact fascists themselves? On that note all the other accusations they like to make are projection as well.
"I'm from corporate governance and I'm here to help"
The solution to all of this has been the same for years: play indie games, if it's political propaganda, refund it and write a negative review mentioning it to keep others from accidentally supporting it, and never pre-order anything.
Always remember, these corporations and investment companies will always cry harassment when the focus is on their own actions and how they have ruined franchises.

You didn't even watch the full video. Sweet Baby is not the core of the problem here, unlike so many people think nowadays. They are simply benefiting from the demand in the market to hire leftist consultants in video game development.
Sweet Baby Inc is part of the problem, but the one that is truly destroying the industry is this whole ESG system enforced by Vanguard and Blackrock.
Lets not forget that the logo uses a known pedophile symbol as released by the FBI on a baby.
The ESG model is almost predetermined to fail if only for the fact that regardless of its intention or even if the postions advocated for are agreeable to all consumers. It creates a homogeneous and repetitive series of products. Variety is necessary in the marketplace so that the most products and companies can florish. If everything is the same why would i shop at multiple places and buy multiple things. ESG creates an environment for artistic sludge to be served to the masses and eventually will destroy all companies until theres only one place to buy from
it's not "allegedly". The CEO of blackrock has said many times on camera the items listed that factor into the ESG score. And he said that the time ahs come for him to FORCE this garbage into our media
“Sweet Baby is merely profiting off a general demand for [wokeness].”
Yeah no. There is no “general demand” for progressive ideology in gaming right now. The general population is not demanding this. Only fringe groups online and investors with larger goals in mind.
Its the same thing Anita Sarkesian was doing. So there is a demand for morons in the buisness, but the customers dont realy like it.
Being fair, he's talking about the demands of the woke investment companies, not the players.
I'm going to guess it's about going for the pension funds. Retirees really are only concerned with collecting dividends.

This is not companies following a trend, it's corporations forcing a cultural change. The real question is to what end?
It's just what they think makes money right now. When they feel like the well is drying up, they'll move on from it.

The end is the Gluttonous Consumer. The money keep flowing away from the wallet, and the information they thought they were paying for contribute to nothing in real life. Wall-E predicted this, might as well watch it again.

It's not about the money. A system's purpose is what it does. BlackRock and Vanguard lose money via ESG, the companies that follow ESG guidelines lose money. The purpose of the system is to destroy culture and demoralize the population.
@@wrongthinker843The answer to that question lies in the ethnicity of the people in charge of BlackRock.

Make the media all targeted on one subject and you can brainwash the younger generation, (even naive adults) who have no idea of different, quality types of media, and you can make a cultural revolution hard to revert for decades.
The aim will always be to psychologically trap people into accepting something that will shape a person's priorities and values
The Rockefeller Family has done that before by influencing Americans to hate black people. All of their generations have dedicated themselves to "change the course of humanity" through psy-op tactics. Except now they have the aid of politicians by corrupting them with money that not only makes them do what millionaires want, but also as black-mail in case they come out to society with their mistakes.
They are essentially a mafia except internationally. And, much like the Chinese mafia and the previous case of JFK, if their servants step out of line, their lives are in danger. The servants all end up being scapegoats in the end. That is how they keep themselves afloat and without scratches.
This is the problem with videogame companies being publicly traded, they have to please investors by showing perpetual profit growth. There are two primary ways to do that, one is through micro transactions and expansions, the second is by making the game reach a wider number of players, this results in more shallow games with more diversity.
A game can hit a lot of social boxes and still be good but that usually comes from studios who still value art rather than profit.
This just makes me cherish gaming in my childhood even more (90s through early 2000s).Back then, games came out finished, a lot of them had originality, no micro-transactions, no pay to play, and no plolitical agendas. I could play games to eacape the world for a few hours a day.

You know the wokies will call you a far right extremist now...
I feel it should be possible in say a RPG where you have a character creator. That is why I would say a game like Fallout is a better RPG than Mass Effect as you have more options for how your character looks.
I'm white as a sheet and most of my favorite characters either wear an outfit or a piece of armor the entire time not showing any skin, they're not white, or they aren't even human. I never ever really paid attention to how many straight white male characters I played as in video games, I just thought they were really cool and badass and I agreed with their ideals. Their skin color was never once relevant at all.
Well thought out video with great research, this was a great watch. It also reinforced my opinion on ESG and what it has done to gaming and future games like gta 6, call of duty and battelfield.
A lot of people like to pretend this isn't happening, I think GTA VI is going to open a lot of eyes. It's one of the few big games that the majority of gamers are actually looking forward to, and they're absolutely not prepared for how drastic of a change it's going to be for the franchise. Much like Suicide Squad, as beloved studios release their next games, people are going to realize that the actual developers who's work they loved are now long gone
GTA 6 better not be woke. 🤮
Who could have thought hiring a bunch of consultants to improve your business could actually put you on a path towards going out of business.
Disney: Shocking face
The fact that "consultants" are a career that earn hundreds of thousands of dollars to essentially convince your company they know how it could be run better has to be one of the biggest scams of the 21st century.
So companies are simply adapting to the investor demands for ESG scores to secure funding. But the question still remains where are these demands originating from? The majority of Blackrock and Vanguard is held by a handful of powerful families as far as I'm aware. Are they just trying to push their political believes on the world? Are they profiting from the ESG system? How and why did it come about? Are they creating this shift in culture or are they adapting to it?
The founders are all jews. That's your answer.
I wonder some families are part of the Rothschilds.
They're putting insane amounts of money into forcing culture change. They're not adapting to it. They're artificially creating it. That's why no one likes it. They're not making any money off of it. They have so much money, they can write it off as losses.
I wonder how many of those elite individuals at the top of Blackrock and Vanguard are democrat voters/lobbyists. If so, they've clearly found a way to tap into pop culture and infect it with extreme left politics, all so they can control the masses. Am I having a tin foil hat moment?
They are the cause in the shift in culture. It might be because they're offended. It may not matter that they profit from the ESG system because they can make up for the losses in other ways, and they probably have no rivals because they're financially dominant in the world and in complete control, they can't lose. It's not about political beliefs, it's about political ambitions. I think it's also about spitefulness, but actually, it's about fear. They fear us. The internet has revealed many of their secrets. They're losing control of the narrative which keeps us under their control.

The problem in media forms in general is constant throughout.
There may be slight alterations based on the monetization models, but generally it always is something along the lines of "lore not adhered to", "entire plot points and characters redesigned for DEI and ESG scores", "gameplay almost nonexistent because political message is more important", and "start with beloved series because we know our ideas are terrible and will never have a chance unless we destroy the franchises that will be used popularly against us".
I'm telling you as a former Hollywood Network Executive, games, music, videos of all formats, the problems with "woke" and "dei" are the same generally throughout these mediums because the people at the top all know each other, F each other, are intermarried probably somehow by way of 2nd cousins or farther, and plan generations ahead.
What culture at large has to do is stop reacting years after its too late and massive amounts of franchises are destroyed. People were calling out "woke nonsense" back in 2013-2014 and were getting reamed with claims like "not enough evidence". I think it's easy to hyper-fixate on the woke aspect of this story, but it's bigger than that. If BlackRock used a method of gauging investment risk with a metric we'll call CSF or the Cookie Score Fundamentals. And that metric were measuring employee cookie preferences, whether or not there is diverse enjoyment of wide ranges of types of cookies, company bake-off events, in-house recipes, and the number of grandmas employed for on-demand cookie baking. That would be a horrible metric.
That's the point. The metric they are using to measure the investment risk of a company doesn't actually measure the risk, it incentivizes pandering, and they can't even hold up to their ideals as demonstrated with the gambling requirements.
As much as I would love companies to start running on metrics that benefit me personally (because my homemade cookies are amazing); I can't deny it would be bad for the investors and the companies to be judged on something so superficial.
Just make a good game. You can have more inclusive characters like Baldur’s Gate 3. But it wouldn’t add anything to the story or would actually take from it if there were more diverse characters in a game like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. And both games won Game of the Year and sold insanely well.
