Sweet Baby Incorporated (a narrative consultation company in the video game industry) has recently garnered excess media attention after it Streisanded itself to a mainstage spotlight.
The company seeks to modify video game narratives but with two sides pitted against each other on the basis of politics, the reality surrounding this company has become extremely distorted.
A media machine intent upon downplaying facts and openly lying... versus gamers who are hyper scrutinizing industry practices. Lets take a look at the story.

@@fancykarlmarx It only takes one line of dialogue to recontextualize an entire story.
I haven't played Alan Wake at all, but the implications of this line of dialogue is that there is internalized hate/disdain for a certain group of people, to the point of disregarding them. This is just bigotry, and as someone heavily intertwined with Black Activism, it's a major problem that we have to combat as it's a major contributor to why ending racism is so difficult.
I don't know the story contents of Alan Wake, but judging by @AnMcomm 's reply, I don't think this character was supposed to develop in such a way.
The issue with "Woke Culture" is that it's trying to reverse racism, not end it. This one line of dialogue could turn a story of self acceptance, and developing one's own strength even as a supposed outsider in a community, into a story of a character becoming bitter. Again, I don't believe Alan Wake 2 wanted to make a bitter character, so it makes a damning contradiction in the values of a character that can ruin them.

She didn't really "say" that. That line is from when the darkness is trying to trap her in her Mind Place, and she is experiencing hallucinations, excessive criticism of self and others - her case board is unraveling and "clues" like "you are a bad mother/partner/etc." are appearing on it.. generally she is spiraling out, in that scene.
I think that line fits in well here, since it's clearly a bad perspective to have and not something that normal/healthy Saga would think, it helps underpin how her mind is attacking her.

Remember gaming news isn't a vehicle for gamers to learn about the gaming industry. It's an advertising vector for the games industry. They're not interested in the grass roots movement. They're interested in convincing people to buy their games and if people aren't buying games based on a third party consulting firm that is a part of the credits (they can't change that), then the gaming news is going to be used as a mouthpiece to essentially say "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain"

Theoretically I could. I won't go into much detail because it would likely get deleted and it's a lot of work for something that may or may not stay up. So a short synopsis:
There used to be testing on people with different ethnic / genetic backgrounds in the 90's before certain laws and they found major differences (read: strengths and weaknesses both) in many disciplines for these different groups.
African, Arabic, Asian, European and Hispanic people all score very differently not only in socio-economic factors, but also baseline factors such as spatial perception, emotional reactions, different types of intellect and much more.
And those factors also don't go away when they are raised in the same environment.
TL;DR: Life is like a real world RPG and the stat distribution is all over the place.
People are different, so equating everyone to be the same in every regard and expecting the same performance for everyone is doing a disservice to them.
You can't measure a fish by how well it climbs a tree.
The old statistics are still out there if you're willing to look. The results won't be surprising to you at all. In fact many of these results confirm what conventional wisdom already tells you, both negatively and positively.
(In example African people make good in-the-moment entertainers, meanwhile Europeans and Asians show more ingenuity when it comes to problem solving, etc).

Suits care about money and power and if DEI can give them that, than that is the game they will play. The upside is that suits have no loyalty so we can sway them by making sure the ESG money isnt worth the total losses they suffer. I saw this from a rather simple perspective, or so I believe anyway.
If SBI were above board and what they were doing was truly beneficial, they'd have no problem with the Steam curator advising players of their involvement. It's essentially free advertising. What company doesn't want free advertising? If what you're doing is good, free advertising converts into free cash.
But instead, they knew immediately that players being informed about them would cause problems, because those players would quickly find out that SBI have an ideological agenda. They don't care about video games beyond the ability of those games to be Trojan horse delivery systems to push the ideology. And so, they moved immediately to squash the curator. That reaction is a huge red flag as far as I'm concerned. They know what they're doing will be viewed negatively, and they didn't want it advertised.
All the vile things that their employees have done and said since just hammers the point home. Thankfully Steam resisted attempts to get the curator banned, and content creators have taken it a step further to point out that SBI are just one of many such companies pushing DEI and their identity politics.

    • @StreakyBaconMan
      @StreakyBaconMan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

To me that is the absolute worst argument against SBI - of course they aren't going to view it as free advertising if some guy online lists any game they were involved in as "not recommended" based solely on the fact this company was involved with the game in some way. It's not like the guy who made the list was some apolitical saint who created the list purely for informational purposes leaving it up to people to do their own research to figure out if they want to buy or avoid products this company has worked on - he created the list specifically to tell people to avoid all the games on it and the vast majority of people aren't going to do any research and take it at face value that this company makes games woke and bad. Personally when I saw the list it is what told me this is a load of nonsense, people getting riled up over absolutely nothing at all. There are too many games on it that I have played and basically know are not overly woke or trying to push a certain political narrative.
In reality it seems like this company is the video games version of those companies that will certify that your products are sustainably sourced, or that they are environmentally friendly - they exist solely so other companies can say "our game is inclusive and respectful of minority groups" despite it being an afterthought at best. I'd even argue that if you're 'anti-woke' you should probably love companies like SBI that allow game developers to get the credit for being inclusive of minority groups without ACTUALLY having to do anything meaningful to be inclusive of minority groups. Personally I think they are just a total waste of space - they aren't destroying games by making them woke, mainly because they don't do anything productive in the first place.

@@StreakyBaconMan Yeah, I guess we'll have to disagree. The guy doesn't have powers of mass hypnosis. The vast majority of players aren't going to see some guy's random "don't buy this due to X" and take that at face value without themselves weighing the value of X. Negative reviews are a dime a dozen. They only have weight when there's something to them, otherwise it's just someone blowing their opinion out into the internet to be lost amidst the countless other opinions.
I don't doubt you'll get some responding at the mere whiff of woke because at this stage many are sick of it, but you'll also get people taking a closer look at this. That's when they recognise that SBI do exactly what Kim Belair said they do. Attempt to inject DEI into games, whilst getting members of these companies to essentially threaten their marketing teams with consequences if they don't employ companies like SBI to do so. Frankly her words and the actions of SBI in trying to get the curator's account nuked probably threw more gas on this fire than could have been achieved otherwise.
At the most charitable take on this, if they're innocuous but otherwise a general waste of space, why would I or anyone support them financially? The money devs pay to them could be going into increasing the quality of a product instead, which benefits the consumer.

I remember seeing a thread on reddit that was discussing the failure of the Saints Row reboot, a couple months after it launched. There were plenty of therories but most centred on 'woke' staff at Volition but I made a comment saying that it was cleary a product of some kind of consulting agency. After all, volition had made the previous SR games and they, for better or worse, had style. The SR reboot on the other hand was so manifestly uncool and the writing and characters so formulaic that it went beyond poor writing and could only be explained by rigid guidlines put forth by non creatives. That comment received a disproportionate amount of downvotes and I think i know why now.

Their argument doesn't hold up. Ok, for the sake of argument lets say that SBI is only every brought in at the very last minute, let's even say they don't even do anything when they're there... the Steam curator list is still valid. In that case it isn't showing games that SBI ruined... it's showing games made by publishers/devs who felt they needed consultation because they were forcing something into a game that didn't come naturally to them. THAT is the thing people are against, SBI are just a good litmus test for that.

Especially the claim that "gamers don't understand" is a strawman, as the media are making claims that I haven't heard gamers say.
    1. The game companies are absolutely to blame. They either actively want this slop, or are too cowardly to defend themselves against it.
    2. We know what Sweet Baby is doing to the video games they touch, because we have seen the same effects in tabletop games and modern fiction (both of these through "sensitivity readers"), localized anime, and movies and TV series (through unqualified groupthink writers' rooms) for years now.

HP Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" illustrated the Streisand effect before it even had a name. In Chapter III, the first sentence of the 23rd paragraph reads "It will be hard work deterring others from the great white south, and some of our efforts may directly harm our cause by drawing inquiring notice." And again in the last sentence of the 6th paragraph in Chapter VI: "It would be tragic if any were to be allured to that realm of death and horror by the very warning meant to discourage them." This concept has been around for a long time. That Streisand's name is attached to it is tragic since she probably lacks the capacity to comprehend its irony.

"Our employees Chris Kindred & Maya Felix Kramer are not exemplifying our core message and we regret that this targeted harassment has happened to the individual who has created the Steam curator group. We here at SBI would like to extend an apology to KABRUTUS, and of course as it is his consumer right, we have no issue with him having created said group."
INSTEAD THEY LIKE QUADRUPLED DOWN AND HAVE KOTAKU & OTHER GAMES JOURNALISTS RUNNING DEFENSE.
It shows that they have the highschool mentality of clique shit that's still ingrained in a lot of people, and they don't know how to run a business. If I was PR or HR of that place I would have had those two fuckin fools in my office going 'Both of you are apologizing immediately via twitter, and are on a two week unpaid leave.'

So let me address the "woke" argument first:
The reason many things get called woke, is because "Woke" is a set of Socio-political beliefs. So if a movie is called "woke", it means that the movie is changed to preach the ideology, you see this with many modern re-makes, instead of just being a good movie. Characters are changed, the dialogue is a not naturally written and sounds like the stuff a teenager who just discovered communism wrote. It's why a lot of gaming, sci fi, and fantasy entertainment fans dislike this ideology. Or in politics, everything has to be about race, sex, or gender. I explain in my definition why:
    "Woke
    /wōk/
    noun
The colloquial term for intersectional Social Justice ideology. This is characterized as an ideology routed in Marxist (Socialist) propaganda integrated into a number of different western social movements based in class, race, sexual preference, identity, religious and political preferences. It is most pronounced in Critical Theories, such as Critical Race Theory, Intersectional feminism and the LGBTQ+ movement as well as DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion). The goals and actions of the 'woke' movement can be characterized by a belief that all people belong to either a victim or an oppressor class. This does not mean those opposed to movements of this ideology always disagree with a cause. For example you can be Gay or Lesbian and believe in gay rights but not part of LGBTQ.
There is a hierarchy that assigns virtue or privilege based on perceived group identity and members of the woke movements will form angry mobs to attack others inside or out of the group to destabilize systems, reroute resources to perceived oppressed groups and attack outgroups. In Media, they co-opt creative works to politicize and use Representation to push DEI using characters and storylines, at the expense of the story and characters. Usually this is done by deconstructing the themes and story of beloved characters, or outright replacing them. Writers and believers of this ideology believe in "Representation" which is the belief that a character represents a oppressed class or an oppressor, and should reflect that. This is because they believe all art is political, which is derived from Marxist beliefs about art.
As a result of this hierarchy, they can only see people as representatives of a group identity, and do not recognize a person's individuality. Therefore all they see in a person is their race, gender, disability, or other 'identity' trait they can put in their hierarchy. Individual deemed to be of identities who in their view have privileges are an oppressor.
Victim status will be used to pressure and control it's believers and outside groups into submission under the guise of being tolerant and empathetic. Activists will use it as a shield to defend against any form of retaliation. The woke activists will lie, manipulate, bully and propagandize others by claiming any opposition is a form of hatred or bigotry. The woke ideology do not recognize any form of objective truths and only aspire to power and 'their truths' which are in their academic theories.
Synonyms: Intersectionality, Social Justice. Marxism. Socialism. Identity Politics.
Marxists designed the ideology to influence and subvert their enemy's cultures in the 1920's. Now it's used by corporations, academia, NGO's, movements and governments to gain power.
It's up to the reader if they believe my Encyclopedic type definition, Sweet baby is one of many companies that operate in the gaming industry and the threat we can see. What we can't see are the other consultant companies pushing their agendas, and the real issue are the corpoations that use ESG, and hire these consultants, mostly because devs or publishers believe in the same ideology. CD Projekt Red is an example of an ESG company, I believe gamers are right to be angry at this, but the issue is SB.Inc is not the only one.

    • @areadenial2343
      @areadenial2343 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

Because there's a demand for it on an investment level. ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) is basically a measure of what social impacts an investment has. In short, the theory is that investments which are good for society and the environment are better for the economy in the long run than investments which are short-sighted and greedy. The problem is that you cannot easily define "social good", which leads to consultancy firms like Sweet Baby who assert that their flavor of "social good" is what's best for everyone.
