"BetterHelp" (once a prominent TH-cam sponsor...) is making a comeback on the platform after 6 years, with a massive advertising push in the wake of newly forgotten scandals, and breaches of trust.
While some viewers may not remember the details about this company... that doesn't change their track record, and it certainly does not mean that their business ethics have improved. Today I wanted to re-evaluate this company since it will be appearing on a lot peoples feeds with increasing frequency over the coming months.

How are you going to prove a TH-camr never used a service, especially if it's supposed to stay private like with BetterHelp?
Even if investigators had magic powers, it would be so easy for these sponsored TH-camrs to "use" these services for like 10 minutes just to be able to say they used that service... As long as the general population will stay dumb and uneducated these companies will continue to make billions.

So like how would they know how good the product is if there is no way they could have tried it? Don't forget the psychological manipulation of making the cancel button say "quit therapy." Like any medication. It's only meant to be a crutch to help you cope until you heal enough that you don't need it. If you stay on any head meds, either prescription or self medication, for too long devastating side effects catch up to you. Doesn't matter if it's SSRI's, benzodiazipenes, alcohol, amphetamines or any of the other 1000s. They're all a band aid patch for your mental health that covers up the symptoms without addressing the actual root cause. Best to just go to therapy (not BetterHelp though) and start eating healthier drinking more water and exercising.

The use of the wording "Quit Therapy" is also a psychological angle. There is a much more negative connotation with choosing to quit something like therapy than there is with choosing to cancel your service with a specific provider. If you are quitting then you are giving up on doing something, whilst cancelling a service is just that, cancelling a specific service - in many cases to replace it with another! What Better Help opted to use is a shame tactic to make the client feel just that tiny bit more guilty about hitting that cancel button. This is why they opted to use the exact wording they have when you attempt to cancel your subscription with them. As a mental health app, they know full and well that this is a shame tactic and that their client base includes vulnerable individuals who are susceptible to such exploitative practices, yet they still opted to use them and exploit the mental health struggles of those clients in an attempt to get them not to cancel their subscriptions! That's pretty bloody shady for an app that claims to care about bettering people's mental health, now isn't it? Almost like the shame tactics some abusers try to use when you try to leave them!

But if i start selling dangerous drugs on the street that will cause harm to my customers then thats not okay. Lol no shit right? Seems like it's about a 90% ratio maybe higher.. kind of screws it up for the rest that actually have a product worthy, like you got a filter a little bit.. The $3 earbuds for a fortune, The garbage spyware browsers... The mobile gotcha games...
Like it helps if you frame it a little bit more honestly than these services are attempting at, to get that personal connection and personal recommendation from the TH-cam and creator-based model of content delivery.. But, it is what it is and you kind of got to read between the lines a little bit, not too much though.
But it's pretty clear at this point, if it's in an advertisement... You're better off disregarding it, or actively avoiding it then you are to actually take a recommendation assuming that a creator actually believes in a product or even says they believe in a product...
There are things like HelloFresh and whatnot, those are legit, actually, reasonably up front services that do a thing.. and even some of the VPNs are reasonable for a VPN service, although... All of them should be treated extremely suspect when selecting because it's incredibly region-dependent and One should understand what they're doing with that, and what it offers and what it doesn't and what one has to do on their end before even bothering...
But you know what.. The bar is so low, and the creators themselves will talk about it outside of this particular sponsorship video etc.. you basically like okay yeah, all of this is trash until proven otherwise, because you're seeing the absolute trash of the trash, to the point of harmful, sold under the same emphasis More often then not, as anything that's quality.

No, because while Established Titles was a con, it did little to harm those it was fleecing, and the take was relatively low.
BetterHelp "contracted" subpar therapists, forced them into bad work contracts, signed up people without properly advising them of their rights under HIPAA (if you're in the US), violating their rights under HIPAA (if you're in the US), and bilked them for sessions their patients did not attend. I work for a large healthcare system in the US Southwest. If my employer even attempted a sliver of what they did, the Feds would swoop in and shut us down. There would be no settlement. There would be no billing Medicare/Medicaid. And when state ran health plans and private insurance companies got wind of that, we wouldn't be able to bill them, either. Effectively a death blow. The only reason it's not a death blow for BetterHelp is that BetterHelp does not bill any federal, state, or private insurance as their business is 100 percent out of pocket.

My aunt is a licensed therapist and has had more than one patient that was horribly misdiagnosed by BetterHelp therapists. Which isn't surprising, considering they're allowed to operate by text only which is generally a big no-no - humans have so much body language and unconscious vocal tells that are vital to accurate diagnosis.
They also allow therapists to work outside their own state, which is illegal to put it bluntly. Therapist licenses have specific restrictions based on that state's board, which often require different levels of experience/mentor hours etc. Not to mention entirely different countries and their requirements.
    Not even once with BetterHelp.

Well to play devils advocate a little, i was a corpsman in the navy, that’s worked in my fair share of mental health departments, we sometimes do make check in calls/text on every patient to catch up with them. However we also saw them in person on a weekly, bi -weekly basis. Not saying you’re wrong just saying there are multiple facets of care depending on the severity of each patient. I do agree that better-help’s strict policy of “socially distant therapist” is very costly on how much they can do for someone.

BetterHelp (like so many other services that do TH-cam sponsorships) just sounded like a scam to me in the first place. But maybe that's because I was already aware of how a lot of licensing differs from state to state and that a person needs to be licensed with each state they practice medicine in - even if they're seeing their patient via tele-medicine.
Granted, I was introduced to the weird and complicated system of state licensing for a ton of professions via life insurance. I used to work processing life insurance applications for an international financial company (although I only handled the life insurance they offer in the US - I don't even know if they offer life insurance in other countries).
Ofc, other services like Incogni also hit that "too good to be true" button IMO. I'm just waiting for the news to come out about these new services that supposedly remove your info from data sales and stuff like that.

I always leave on a message on these videos when I see it, telling them about the shady business practices, inability for customers to quit the service, and not once has any one of these creators ever responded, or stopped making BetterHealth ad segments. Its a shame, I don't know if its because I mainly watch smaller content creators who are literally desperate for the support in order to keep making videos so they are scared to respond and unable to quit taking money from BetterHelp, but I feel awful that BetterHelp is infiltrating a community that I love and scamming people with a service that is hard to cancel and selling their information. I always making sure to comment on any video I see with a BetterHelp ad to at least warn the viewers, and if I'm lucky, also the creator so they might look into the company and hopefully stop any association if possible.

They not only still shill them, but fervently try to defend them in their comments. Economics Explained was shilling them too, but I think he dropped them. I hope so.

Dark patterns on its site, Google-level copouts in its TOS, leaking PHI, and aggressively pursuing subscription based profits. It's not the first company following that route, but it's definitely one of the ugliest.

I have paranoid schizophrenia, major depression, bpd, and adhd. I can’t explain how annoying and hard it was to try and use betterhelp. Not to mention, I’m a struggling adult who’s trying not to be homeless again, so tha fact you can’t get ANY help without paying over $100 is disgusting

Sometimes I feel like I'm on the wrong planet. It just amazes me the stuff people get into, believe, or otherwise engage with.

12:27 Betterhelp candidly admits they care more about your privacy than your mental health. And no, they don't care about your privacy either.

Thats why avoiding ads entirely, is essential.

As someone in marketing, if a company is seen more than once a month or even 5+ times a week in advertisements. This is a hell of a lot spent on advertising. In some cases advertising can make up for the product, if a product is good without crazy overbearing advertising then the customers should know it’s a good product and not always a good marketing campaign. (Then again this doesn’t always apply but sometimes a product is a great product, so a company doesn’t “need” to advertise it and people will just talk about how good it is and that’s more than enough advertising as to compensating a shit product with advertising.)
Anything seen on TH-cam that’s heavily marketed, seems like partly a way to support the creator, not their subscribers. A good sponsorship should be within the same values of a creator in my opinion, but unfortunately money does a lot to people’s ethical practices.

I think it's interesting how you're talking about one criminal agency and their advertising virus while accepting another criminal agency with their own advertising virus as your own sponsor.

Sorry to hear about your wife. Hopefully, you are getting some help and are part of a survivor's support group. And you did dodge a bullet with not using BetterHelp.

Thank you all for your support and well wishes. I lost my wife in October of 2022, so 2023 was a very difficult year. I'm doing a lot better now and have even started dating again--I'm seeing a widow who lost her husband not long after I lost my wife. Interestingly enough, we found each other even though neither of us were looking or had any intention of dating again. So, yeah, 2024 is a much better year, by far.

i used it a few years ago, they took $300 from me to assign me a children’s therapist (I was 20) who was not helpful in the slightest. not to mention cancelling is a huge drag, and i always thought it was strange that they didn’t accept insurance.
