Hello! Love your channel. Great narration by both. I'm not homesteading, but I enjoy your problem solving and matter of fact way you approach each new project. The knowledge you have is based on research and not running with the all too abundant drivel provided by others. You're the real deal. I look forward to how you work things out going forward.
Avocado trees are heavy feeders so I’d try planting them with some pigeon peas, moringa and comfrey for nitrogen fixing and chop & drop mulching. That should help to keep the avocado trees happy and healthy. Good luck! ❤
I recently bought a small farm in Colombia and just started homesteading also! I don´t have any animals yet, but soon. I also am learning to work on a hill, it is very challenging! You have a great piece of land, can´t wait to see the development! I am not building a house, my property had a small house but it is a fixer upper! I have one cacoa, I am so jealous of all your seedlings! Except I don´t think I live in the right climate for it, but I am going to try to grow it when I can get a few trees too. Buena Suerte, de Colombia!
Could you terrace the pineapple hill so its easier to work on? A ton of work but long term ease + water catchment? Also, for income supplement, potentially those branches could be used to make coasters to sell. It's a project, but wood burning/branding/laser burn could make a product you could regularly sell from excess free wood?
You know, it's a good idea and one I thought about when planning the hill. But the only thing we have on hand right now to build a terrace out of is logs, and while that would work we've learned that wood on the ground in a perfect ant home and we don't want ants invading the pineapple! So for now, we'll scramble around the hill to get it planted and probably terrace future hills when we can buy cement blocks or something! And good idea with the woodworking project! Eli loves all things woodworking, might give him the idea for a little pocket money!!
Financial insecurity is scary. My life savings don't amount to much, so I'm going to have to make a tough choice. Either buy a small cheap house and put as much as I can in the bank (for a bit of income), or buy a medium-sized house (real estate is generally a safer form of wealth) but have more expenses to maintain it and much less money generating interest in the bank. Personally not a big fan of gardening in general. Most grown things don't really have nutritional value, or are high in carbs (which I don't eat). But avocados? Sounds like a fantastic investment. Highly nutritious, and pretty healthy. Where I live they are a crazy luxury product, but over there it's almost like they're potatoes.
tipppppp go to the supermarkets and ask for the produce damage old bread and u can feed the animals with that...free and the will not have to put it in the landfill...the only thing is u need a way to transport the goodies...
When you're old, and you have all the things you thought you needed to buy with money, you'll look back on the times you spent with people you love, the adventures you dared to take, and the moments of quiet joy that didn't cost a thing, realizing those were the treasures that truly made life rich
@OtacBulldogs We will! We neither one intend to give up doing what we love because of age. Surely, we'll be slower,, and we'll have systems in place to make work easier, but we'll work the rest of our lives caring for our land and each other!
Have one of you been looking for work? I'm sure you have talents that others would find a use for. I realize a job could interfere with your plans for the short term but it will help you pay for your roof. Do you have an Amazon gift list or a way for someone to send to things you need from the States?
It would make perfect sense, logistically, for one of us to work! Unfortunately, jobs here are hard to come by even for locals who are fluent in Spanish. Regardless of practicing, we're far from that level of fluent and jobs all go to locals (as they should). We had plans in place before moving to EC that included income for us, but that fell apart a couple years ago. At this point, we're putting our energy into TH-cam and our online projects (since they need very little money investment) to build a business. And then we have big plans for businesses locally! We don't have a gift list, though I suppose we could set one up! It's best to import a bunch of things at once, financially speaking. Or send with someone in a suitcase!

Did you get used to getting bit by skeeters? It would drive me crazy! How do you deal with it.?
mosquitoes aren't too bad, typically. Occasionally we have a hatch of them somewhere nearby and it's really annoying, but not terrible!

When you get old, who's going to do all the work?
@jackson8085 Gosh, that's well put. Thank you! And very very true. We try to remember that in the moment, as well.

I sent you an email on December 27. You haven't answered.
Don't you two need help? Maybe invite city dwellers (and others) for a working vacation.
Hi, we emailed you when you have a second to look for it, thought I would message you here as well in case it went to your junk mail.
Hi! Just saw your email last night! We'll send out a reply tonight!
