Been in Cuenca for 1 1/2. Weeks. Rent per month 1 bedroom $500 with utilities, food if only cooking at home 200 - 300 per month for 2 people, (no eating out, no restaurants, no alcohol, tobacco etc. very little meat) then add health insurance., subscriptions, etc. Our thoughts $1,200 per month for 2 people who don’t party and are willing to live like the locals do can have a comfortable, simple life with no car and be willing to walk 10 blocks a day to buy food. Say $6,000 to furnish your apartment with premium appliances and furniture one time. But you would have to stick to a strict budget. That would be hard for a lot of expats. It’s easy to spend $30 a day in restaurants for 2 people if eating fancy / American/ or European food. Yes, it’s true that you can get a meal of chicken, rice, and beans for $2.50-$3.50 but you can also cook that at home cheaper.
One of the nicest thing about Ecuador is... owning a car is not mandatory. It's not -30 degrees in the winter and +40 degrees in the summer, so can use a bicycle for local transportation (with the occasional bus ride to get to a bigger city an hour or two away). 6 USD per kilo for beef is pretty great, 3.50 USD for 30 high-quality eggs is fantastic, water is cheap too, and I don't buy plants (might go for avocados once in a while since they're super cheap over there) so I'm good on that front. I imagine charcoal is pretty cheap, too. I love those floppy ears on the goats, but I can't tell Nubians and Boers apart...
I drink the water, exept the coast and deep in the amazon. In the mountains and foothills I've never had a problem. Most of my friends drink directly from streems. It looks cleen but Im not quite ready to go that far
I use Charles Schwab. To transfer from there to banco Pacifico, it's a total of $25. Takes about 3 days as I recall. $15 schwab, $10 pacifico. You can also write youself a check which is free. Takes about 3 weeks to clear.
do you have a site to find rural farms? thanks Now i am debating if i move to Portugal as I planed or to Equator...seems both are cheap for broke senior that wants peace, fresh air and affordable living...
now here u need a prescription from a vet for anything related to animals..except shampoo, or normal care...any medicine is high expensive and u must have the prescription from the vet...which u need to visit the vet and pay big time...
Maybe a silly question but for your first bottle, what is the cost of the bottle of propane? Do you have to purchase an empty one or how does that work?

I loved using my bicycle in Manta. I was able to put my bike on regional busses too
Today in Cuenca Diesel was $1.79, super unleaded was $3.99. Cuenca water is safe from the tap, no problems for us.
Great video, great info. Thanks!

You must purchase a new empty tank $50-60. They take it and give you a full one.
Yup, around $50 for the tank and then you exchange it every time.
I wrote you an email some weeks ago. Greetings from Guayaquil.
So sorry! It ended up in spam...replied a bit ago!
Vilcabamba is more expensive.
Only Chinese cars are "cheaper."
Xiaomi phones are "cheap."
