      It's common for just about everyone in the United States military to say that about their branch. The reason being is because even if the army legitimately did make a mistake 99.9% of the time it is absolutely not getting fixed. So the term "the army doesn't make mistakes" is basically telling you you need to adjust to your new reality.

    Desmond tied a bowline on a bight which is a more difficult knot than a simple bowline. It is also a better knot for lowering/lifting an unconscious person. This proves to be useful later in the movie. This subtle tidbit was probably lost on 99% of people who watched this movie but being a "knot person" I found it to be an interesting addition to the movie and I was surprised that anyone in Hollywood working on this movie even had this knowledge.

      pretty sure it wasn't lost on 99% of people considering they made the actor laugh at the officer's ridicule, thus establishing a relevant intelligence over the officer - almost as if it's a better knot and the soldier knows it.
      This is known as chekov's gun. It's in every movie you've ever seen. They show you something and dismiss it quickly only for it to be used later in the film.
      EDIT: Yeah, ok, so the specifics of the knot was lost because it's irrelevant; what wasn't lost was how the soldier's knot was used later in the film and how most people with any observational skills would realize it was the knot that he was ridiculed for.

    • @VideoMixer1000
      @VideoMixer1000 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      (Caution: My englisch sucks)
      Hes not really a pacifist to me and i think what hes doing doesnt make sense. He says he cant take a life and thats why he cant take a gun into his hands. That alone doesnt make sense because holding a gun in your hand doesnt kill anything or does anything bad but still he wont even touch a gun like a little kid that wants to act the way he thinks is right. Back to my point why hes not a pacifist for me: In germany a woman was sentenced to life in prison because of murder. the interesting thing is that she didnt kill the person. Furthermore she wasnt even at the place where the murder happened. The reason she was still convicted of murder was because she helped planning the murder in her house. So what i want to show is: In this case the reasoning was that the murder was not possible if she hadnt planned it. And that alone was enough that she was sentenced for murder. She didnt shot, she didnt hold a gun nothing.. Same with Doss. If he stayed home i would agree that hes a pacifist. But he goes to war and saves people so that they can continue killing other men. If he helpes men "A" and afterwards men "A" goes back to the front shooting someone than this was just possible because of Doss. Like in the example were the women was sentenced for murder, he also didnt shot someone but is a key factor in the resulting killing that happened. And that makes him also a murder wich means he could just grab a gun and dont act in this egocentric way. "I dont kill people because god doesnt want me to kill bla bla..." and then 10 minutes later he helps someone to get back on his knees to kill other people. Makes him also a murdere in my eyes.
      BUT: hes still a hero for what hes done. probably one of the bravest persons to ever life.

    • @Gramscifreedom
      @Gramscifreedom ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@VideoMixer1000 I think a lot of people here are missing the point. Or at least how I see it. It’s not necessarily about the specifics of his pacifist beliefs, but rather how abnormal and bizarre they are in a world where war is regarded as a natural state and very easy to manipulate people into. True pacifism may be impossible - especially when faced with evil and violence - but that’s exactly why it takes a lot of bravery & commitment to save lives and not take them in such circumstances.

    • @Shendue
      @Shendue 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@VideoMixer1000 Apples and oranges. That's a whole different thing. You are talking about someone who instigated murder. Instigation is considered just as much a crime, or worse by the law system, than killing someone with your own hands, simply because it's the INTENTION of murdering someone that constitute a crime. That's why even if you are not the one who physically commit an homicide, you can get legally condemned for it if you planned it.
      Very different is the case of a man that, yes, went to war, but with no intention of killing anyone, but rather help the people that got harmed.
      It should be noted that he not only saved the lives of many fellow soldiers, but he also saved a good number of ENEMY soldiers.
      If you go to a place where people are killing each other with the intention of helping REDUCE the number of casualties, you are very much a pacifist.
