I mean most intelligent people, especially at that time period, either became scientists in R&D or just went to a division that focused on the back lines. Hell, in modern days most of the smartest recruits go for either the air force or some sort of armory position. One of which is very likely to keep you very far away from the front lines and the other means you're not the first choice when it comes to making infantry units.
It's less about intelligence and more about ingenuity. Rogers saw that brute forcing the problem didn't work (climbing the pole), so he looked at the problem from another angle. If he couldn't get up to the flag, then he would bring the flag down to him instead.
Imagine 10++ years later with new recruits Drill Sergeant: “Nobody’s got that flag since Captain America himself!” Random cadet: “So you gotta have super strength to get it? Man, it’s hopeless!” Drill Sergeant: *smirks*
Shows you from the very beginning that Steve Rogers wasn't just a soldier that asked to be told where to shoot. He always looked for another way, and THAT'S what makes Captain America so great.

just because you have asthma doesn't mean you can't keep up, the dependence on medication in a warzone deffo means you can't serve (unfortunately) but many asthmatics are great athletes. David Beckham has asthma, 8% of Olympic athletes in 2010 had asthma. I manage to still run, train muay thai three times a week, go rock climbing and never have any issues besides mild asthma symptoms in Spring and Autumn or maybe the start of summer which is easily controlled with medication (seasons changing and pollen count being the triggers). The difference between chronic asthma and well controlled asthma is quite pronounced and most folks I know with it can exercise and hit average peak flow readings if they look after their asthma properly. That being said, the need to control it is a significant disadvantage. Imagine trying to fill a prescription in Helmand province or being woken up by gunfire and having to find your preventer inhaler or even worse, the reliever inhaler before you put your boots on and wade in, there in lies the rub imo...
@@jasonkelly7951 Yeah, I agree, I have asthma too and I can keep up with enough exercise and effort (Mine was first more chronic then got better control over it overtime). Of course, Steve Rogers has a ton of other medical barriers too from heart problems to high blood pressure to even Scarlett Fever (Dude has a whole list when he was trying to enlist), which does make his actual ability to barely keep up more impressive.
@@jasonkelly7951 Being in good shape dramatically helps keep asthma under control. Then it normally requires more than exercise to trigger it (wind/allergies/cold).
@Zain844 Well, it was important to that Project, at the least. I think the good Colonel was willing to give in to the Doctor's insistence because he wanted a Super Soldier with brains, too. He was just being a stubborn old Army man with his ways.
One small detail I wish they show a little longer was when everybody else was talking and standing around, Cap was organizing all his war strategy books to read. That's why he's the smartest strategically and why all the avengers goto him for leadership. They don't call him the man with the plan for nothing
well, he kinda cheated it. You actually should use the sand around it to get a better grip and make your way up, which even someone relatively weak can do with the right technique. The flag test was always about strategy and smarts. Steve just saw a 3rd option, which is pretty much what his character is all about. He will always aim for the 3rd option. You have Tony suggesting that you can stop Thanos by sacrificing people because otherwise they would die anyway, basically the kill 1 person to save millions of people, while cap instantly says that he doesnt want to trade lives. It was even because of that why he jumped on the grenade. You had people running away, you had people covering people they thought were more important, and you had Steve jump on the grenade.
Well, yes, but being worthy requires more than just being willing to sacrifice yourself to save others. Humility is important, as well. Steve was at risk of not having that with his single-handedly saving the 107th prisoners and then his constant successes against Red Skull's facilities. But then he lost Bucky, and then he learned he can't win every cause, every effort. That is what allowed him to be willing to fly the plane into the ice, the realization it was the only play and that attempting anything more would be futile. (When you consider the autopilot likely only allowed changes in altitude, and not heading)
You are wrong, steve became worthy when he matured and stopped arguing with stark all the time. he rose above stark. there is a video on youtube called "when did captain america become worthy" or something like that. its a good video
17 years ago, someone did exactly what Steve did. Shows intelligence and ingenuity. I bet it's designed that way. The Sergeant likely comes out here every morning and evening to raise and lower the flag, respectfully; always terminally dumbfounded that none of the recruits have figured it out.
@mandellorian ... Ok, maybe not EXACTLY what Steve did, because you're right. You would have to walk it down so it doesn't touch the ground, but pulling the pin was the best solution. Thumbs up for catching that; I'd forgotten that when making the comment.
@mandellorian The point of this scene is to show that not every problem has a straightforward direct solution. You'll need to think outside the box. The Sargeant only said to get the flag, he didn't say by which means. As long as you accomplish the outcome, any means is fair game.
One thing about Steve here i don't think gets enough credit is despite his medical history which shows a clear weak physical constitution, he still just about keeps up through training. Sure he may be lackluster in performance compared to everyone else but the fact that he actually manages to just about keep up really shows his determination despite his disadvantrages.
That is the fabric a hero is made of. It's not about overpowering your enemy, a tidal wave can do that. It's about your human integrity, courage, ingenuity, generosity. It is a moral concept, not phisical. Ghandi was no less hero than Mac Arthur. You give power to an unworthy person, and what you get is a villain.
Had ROTC in high school, Steve is asthmatic and in my senior year I was recovering from asthma - when I got back into it, commandant gave us 10 laps on an uphill loop; it was hell but at the very least reconditioned my lungs. Have to wonder what kind of hell Steve went through here being asthmatic and having to go through actual military training
That's definitely part of why they pick him. If he's able to keep up with those guys when he's super weak imagine what he'll be able to do with superhuman strength.

Dead King in Hell I had a similar situation a few years ago. Had a tough job, and was a female. I had to remove a big orange cloth weather vane from a massive pole and just pulling the pin was not allowed. So looking at it I got a plane tug (vehicle to pull Cessnas) and used it to SLOWLY and safely lower the pole down so I could remove the vane and replace it with a new one. When I was done, I used the tug to slowly raise the pole back up. When I was done I was surprised to see everyone looking at me. Including the boss. Clearly this was not what he had in mind. But I did the job safely and did not take long. He gave me a small lecture about “that’s not what the tug was for”. But later I saw one of the other guys copy me!😅 Brains over brawn works almost every time!

It's the army training, yeah they ain't that bright.
"Nobody's got that flag in 17 years."
Doesn't say much for the intelligence of their recruits, does it?
I mean most intelligent people, especially at that time period, either became scientists in R&D or just went to a division that focused on the back lines.
Hell, in modern days most of the smartest recruits go for either the air force or some sort of armory position. One of which is very likely to keep you very far away from the front lines and the other means you're not the first choice when it comes to making infantry units.
@AKB All Star how many soldiers do you know?
It's less about intelligence and more about ingenuity. Rogers saw that brute forcing the problem didn't work (climbing the pole), so he looked at the problem from another angle. If he couldn't get up to the flag, then he would bring the flag down to him instead.

For an asthmatic, he is surprisingly resilient. Being able to barely keep up with the other soldiers is really impressive
just because you have asthma doesn't mean you can't keep up, the dependence on medication in a warzone deffo means you can't serve (unfortunately) but many asthmatics are great athletes.
You know he is Steve Rogers
@@jasonkelly7951 Yeah, I agree, I have asthma too and I can keep up with enough exercise and effort (Mine was first more chronic then got better control over it overtime). well, he kinda cheated it.

As soon as he jumped on the grenade to sacrifice himself, he became worthy of mjolnir.

@@rounak471 Now you have me thinking XD
Pedialyte, sounds like something a pedophile uses to find little kids in the dark.
I wonder who got the flag
rounak yeah same
Can we also appreciate that Peggy's form was flawless when she dropped Hodge - she can throw a proper punch.
Tony: I think id just cut the wire.
Steve: Always a way out, huh?
"Steve finds the way out for the flag"
I'm pretty sure that line is meant to refer to self sacrifice risking everything for the sake of others.
To be fair Avengers 1 was not abgood movie for Cap as it kinda didnt pay attention to the other parts of his character shown in Cap TFA
@@insertnamehere2746 that's Joss Whedon fault. He saw every character as one dimensional besides Tony.

He cheated to get the flag, just like he cheated on Peggy
Alex H what? He didn’t cheat, he just had to get the flag, didn’t say how lmao. Technically, they weren’t dating either.
@@igeruswilson2654 Of course he cheated. His drill sergeant gave a direct order to, "fall in, get in formation." He completely ignores this order from a superior officer and goes to get the flag. Meanwhile all the other participants in the game followed the order. This is like running into the end zone after the game is over and everyone has left the field and saying that the touchdown counts. No it doesn't, the game was over.
This reminds me of the scene in Men in Black when he drags the table across the room to write on. Being able to think outside the box.
David! That my thought, also! Great minds!!😁
MIB is good too.
David conway
And BOTH movies had Tommy Lee Jones in the cast!
Kay: Agent Jay, this is agent S. Our finest men in black.
Jay: Weren't you Captain America?
Steve: Son, just don't.
Have you ever wondered if perhaps that whole situation is intended? Meaning that in a programmed world it the person who CAN THINK that is usually the most valuable, but also dont forget, that person is also THE MOST FEARED.
I think maybe these two clips in question are trying very hard but yet very candlestinely to promote self initiative and actual thinking. And yet, its clear that those who do are also hated and rejected by their common peers. If you think, you definitely stand alone in this world.
This is like that scene in Mulan, minus the part about actually managing to climb to the top of the pole through hard work and perseverance.

It's more of a point that Steve had the courage and ingenuity to be a superhero before the serum.
The reason there was such a rigorous screening process for the super soldier serum is it does not only enhance your physical abilities it also amplifies personality traits.
Any trace of instability would be amplified into a full-blown psychosis when the serum was administered
So bad that it will manifest by turning your head into a red skull.
Or in simple terms its an Upgrade as in it doesn't change the software completely but simply "enhances" it
As we see in a much later movie and another guy is given the super soldier who wasn't "bad" but turned arrogant and lazy in a way he did not quite seem to be before.
@@suzannehartmann946 You referring to John Walker?

He was worthy the entire time because he's genuine and is willing to put his life on the line with no hesitation.
When I was in the infantry in the 70s, we had a guy in my platoon who was about 5 feet tall, a little over 100 pounds maybe. What he lacked in physical strength, he more than made up for with heart and determination. Grunts like him were a pleasure to work with.

If it hadn’t been a time of war and in modern day, Hodge would have been reprimanded and punished for actively and deliberately sabotaging a fellow soldier. This was also one of the main reasons why the doctor didn’t want Hodge to be the first person for the project. You give him that kind of power and he will either join the enemy when it gets tough to continue or he’ll develop a god complex after the war, thinking himself invincible.
