I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SHOW! Always have. I was a young teenager when this first aired on tv..man, I would look forward to watching this....and 50yrs later IT IS STILL MY FAVORITE TV SHOW! great memories
@@Char-kd6blLou was rapid firing both professional and person questions. In the case of "65" Lou thought for a second Mary mean't 65 ways to get divorced..but she was actually dodging the divorced question and referred to Lou's "how many words do you type" question.
This was the era when comedy could be upbeat but very funny. Very sweet. Don't get me wrong, I love snarky and vicious too, but this show and others like it bring me back to a simpler time.
When Mary was told they hired Ed Asner as her boss role she asked the producers "are you sure?" lol. Later she said that was the perfect choice. RIP Mr. Asner.
I know all these questions are absolutely illegal to ask today at a job interview but there is something just so real about watching this and ultimately it was the vibe and personality that got her the job didn't matter how she would have answered any of those questions
I love spunk .... and I love Mary, Ed, Gavin, Ted and all the wonderful people who made this perfect program. I hope they are having a group hug in heaven 💖💖💖
If you never watched the show and are of today’s generation, you’d no doubt have a problem with this scene. He’s belligerent, rude, inappropriate and even menacing, and Mary is intimidated and feeling unsafe. For those who mock feminism, this was the point at which it took root-1970-and the result is that we’ve come a long way toward equality that people take for granted today. But the scene works for fans because we know Lou is a gruff teddy bear who loves Mary, and we know Mary will hold her own against him throughout the series. The delivery of that line “I hate spunk” was perfectly delivered and it works so well because we know that he already likes her. Love you, Ed. Thanks for bringing joy to my childhood.
For the record, when Asner auditioned for the role, they did this scene....apparently it impressed no one and he asked to do it over again. Second time around, he got what you see and they filmed it for the pilot episode....
I love my black women but this lady was very attractive back in the day. I always had a crush on her. It was episode when she had on a green dress. Damn she was fine.😍
That should be said about the activity of suing the pants off as a battlefront of the son and daughter of Vince Lombardi if anybody forces the son and daughter to go to Vince's funeral if they didn't want to attend Vince's funeral if that were to happen today as well because the funeral event happened close to that episode originally airing because Vince was a terror, nightmare and expecting too much from his son and daughter O.K!!!!
That should be said about the activity of suing the pants off as a battlefront of the Brian and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys to Carl because in 1973 Carl was furious over Brian and Dennis missing their father Murry's funeral because of parental physical abuse if Murry's funeral were to happen in a later era while Carl Wilson was expecting too much of Brian and Dennis O.K!!!!
Ed Asner, Mary Tyler Moore, Carol Burnett, Archie Bunker, Bob Newhart, and on and on. The 1970s was a glorious time for smart, classic situation comedies and variety shows.
@@snoopy64116 I loved him in "Coming To America": "Son, I'm only gonna tell you this one time: You better get off of them drugs!" And of course in "Good Times."
I'm hoping someone can answer this question. I know it's the same actor, but was it also the same character in this show and the Lou Grant show in the late 70s?
Yes. Lou had toned down considerably over the course of the MTM Show and was no longer a heavy drinker or blatant sexist. He stlll engaged in some sexist behavior but it was more patronizing and paternal than overtly sexist.
When they filmed the first show in front of an audience, no one laughed. Not the second one, either. When they did it a third time with some changes, they did.
It makes me a little sad to watch shows like this in the current year. They remind me of a long lost bygone era when sitcoms were actually funny and engaging, and woman were actually charming and pleasant to be around.
... I always wonder when people say ' this would never work in this 'woke era'... the fact is, this show, at the time it came out, was 'cutting edge'... ( that's the old-timey word for WOKE!!)
Some of the best comedy dialogue ever written!
I've seen this scene too many times to count, & I still laugh.
I wonder how many times they cracked up during filming.
Absolutely brilliant and delivered perfectly by Mr. Asner. Also one of the very best TV casts ever assembled.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SHOW! Always have. I was a young teenager when this first aired on tv..man, I would look forward to watching this....and 50yrs later IT IS STILL MY FAVORITE TV SHOW! great memories
The cast, writing, characters, production of this show was AMAZING! Every on a precious gem!
THIS is how comedy is done kids!! RIP Ed AND Mary!!!!
Aww man! I knew Ed passed away, butI didn't realize Mary was gone too.... Was I under a rock?
Rest in Peace Ed Asner. We’ll all miss you.
He lived a long pissed off life. I'm proud of him.
Loved that show then AND now. It’s the sitcom I compare all other sitcoms to. Ed Asner was one of those reasons. R.I.P., big guy.
Watched this with my family the first night. When Lou said “I hate spunk” we all laughed so hard. It was so unexpected.
The way these two actors played off one another is both pure talent edging on genius.
You had me at edging.
👀
@@horse69outside Hey hey calm down. You aren't Ed Asner

Creepy lefty. Like Roy said, glad he’s gone.
Yeah, Tommy K. Nothing like enjoying someone else's death. Let the bad times roll!
You've got spunk. I hate spunk. Still my favorite line from the entire series.
5 Emmys, all deserved.
THANK YOU for all the great performances Ed Asner, cya 'up there'
Asking for a Brandy Alexander was a great line. Terrific intro scene for Lou. You get the essence of the character right away.
I thought Lou was going to say (to Mary's preference for a "Brandy Alexander"): "A *what?"*
Just like Carrol O’Connor…two famous TV grumps who were actually the total opposite in real life. RIP Ed Asner.
In the tv sitcom tradition of Jackie Gleason as the splenetically long over beleaguered Ralph Kramden.
I love his character. Gruff, strong, straight talking but with a heart.
Perfectly stated.
Very much like Carrol O'connor. Asner was was a little better. They both were similiar.
RIP Ed Asner. Thanks for sharing your great talent with us.
Good Night, Ed...You OWNED the words "Gruff but Lovable"
Mary Tyler Moore was such a class act. So lovely. She was great
Such an iconic scene featuring all-time greats.

I had forgotten just how beautiful Mary Tyler Moore was.
MTM was absolutely stunning,no make up needed, she was just such a sweetheart.
I actually remember her beauty quite a lot. It all started with Laura Petrie.
The best joke was where Mare says "65" that's some fantastic writing right there!
It would have been funnier if she said 69. although that might been too risque for 1970
That’s the one joke in this that I don’t get…what am I missing? I didn’t grow up in the 70s by the way

She walks into the interview with a tight sweater and mini skirt and he offers her a drink. Only in the 70's
a lot of women did that back in the day to show their best "attributes" in order to land a job
I was born too late
That's a tight sweater???Mary was always a good girl.
Certainly not a mini skirt! Or a tight sweater. A mini skirt is much shorter. I grew up in that era. This was worn by everyone in offices.
