This sketch was posted to TH-cam 17 years ago. It's from a comedy special that aired on television in February 1987 called "Carol, Carl, Whoopi and Robin"
"You gotta jump down, spin around, pick a bail o' cotton" -Carol, looking away and pinching her nose to try to keep from bursting out laughing. It's incredible that Williams was just making all this up on the spot as he went along with the basic story line.
Based on here introduction, he already had some of the things he wanted to do worked out, probably including that song. But the filler -- that's where the real ad-libbing is, and between the two of them it's genius. I barely laughed at the first "take," but the second one was absolutely hilarious.
@@angelbear_og A loose outline of how the sketch would go with general lines, most likely, with the rest being improv. At best they probably wrote in a few jokes here and there, but it would defeat the point of the show if they were too restrictive.
A little over 30 years ago, I watched a Mother's Day special that included Robin Williams and his mother. SHE is where Robin got his comedic ad lib chops. What a funny, wonderful woman... In an interview, she had Robin -- and me -- in stitches. What a gift she gave us in her son -- and what a loss to the world it was when he passed away. If the measure of one's life is to have left the world better than one found it, Robin and his mother succeeded spectacularly.
This is actually the first time I’ve watched a comedy skit with him since he’s passed away. Two comic geniuses at work - thank you Robin for making me laugh.

My two favorite comics together! I don't recall ever seeing this before so I'm glad you posted this! I absolutely adore them both and still mourn over his passing. He was a wonderful human being...and funny as hell.
The 2nd take was hilarious. You can almost see how his mind works, how it's constantly improving and adding to what was already done. Hers, too. Her "BS" was great! Two unique genius talents together. I'm glad we at least still have Carol.
I adore her improvisation re: the hamster, complete with her fingers curved like claws. Wonderful response to Williams's improv. And yes: the 2nd version was better than the 1st.
The brilliant improvisation of Robin Williams combined with the comic genius and pitch-perfect timing of Carol Burnett= excellence. His single line: There's some coffee in the embalming room but it tastes funny...omg. He was simply a born comedian and Carol? Well, basically what can anyone say. except thank you so much for the memories and the reminder of Robin, gone too soon.
Yeah, next to Carol struggling not to laugh, and possibly the outrageous song substitution, the coffee line was one of the most hilarious of the video. With the warning "Be careful."

Got to give Carol Burnett a lot of credit for this skit. This stuff could only happen on her show. She recognised William’s talent before he became a huge hit. A lost venue for creativity.
Carol & Robin melded together so perfectly in "The Funeral". How wonderful is it that she would do the sketch a second time, allowing Robin to do what he built up his career doing so perfectly. I don't think people realize that he only had to go through his lines usually just once, and knew the lines of practically everyone in the scene. He was brilliant in most everything he did.
He was a genius in his role in "Good Will Hunting"... In fact all the roles he played...no other actor could possibly be as great... Love and miss him....
I thought she was gonna loose it but after years of working with Tim & Harvey she's a pro. Wouldn't be able to say most of this on tv now, you'd be called racist. Funny thing is tho, they bleeped out "bullshit" at the end but all the stuff certain people would call racist stayed in. Times change
@@ellenhage3611 not really an opinion, it's fact, things have changed, things that weren't really considered "racist" back then is today. I mean come on, Aunt Jemima isn't on a bottle idvsyrup anymore because it's "racist" LOL

The way I see it, death is a battle we all have to lose at some point. But look at all this man accomplished. He won the war. Thanks for everything, Robin Williams. I hope you rest not only in Peace, but in Joy.
We have lost so many amazing comedians over the last few years They can never be replaced and there comedy acts cannot be copied to the high standard they gave in there performances
Carol, Harvey, Tim, Vicki, Lyle and her incredible guest stars...such as the legendary Mr Williams, never disappointed. I know there are talented comedians now, but I sure miss the classics sometimes. There was a lot of innuendo, but it still felt safe. Idk, maybe I lived in a bubble growing up in the late 60s and 70s, but I thought grown-ups knew what was going on, would take care of the bad guys/world crisis/natural disaster/all the "ism's," and make it all better. So I figured in the meantime, after Dad watched Walter, they (whoever They were) said, "Here's some laughs before bedtime." I miss that innocence. 😔
Those were the days..... I watch certain channels on TV that play the classics. I can't watch the news or the crap they call comedy today. I wish we could go back in time.
Carol Burnett was renowned for her ad libbing whenever an actor missed a line during the early days of television. I saw a documentary where the leads of a (local?) tv show told the audience they were going to deliberately screw up their lines just to show off Burnett's improve skills. And she kept the scene going. The leads however were not as good as Williams and Conway so the scene was bland.
One of my happiest memories is me hearing my mother's giggles coming from another room I always knew she would be watching Carol and friends I thank Carol for the laughter that she gave to my mother .
8:07, I almost choked on my coffee I laughed so hard. Two comedy legends feeding off each other. Their chemistry was excellent, and Carol really got Robin at the end.
😂 I sure miss Robin Williams may he Rest In Peace. I can imagine he has the Angels absolutely rolling in laughter .. How young they are in this clip!!😂 He and Carol Burnett, legends both, made a great team! 💖
It's fascinating how the lines Robin Williams improved were consistently better than the ones an entire team of writers had an entire week to come up with. He really had an incredible comedic mind and a very quick witted one to boot.
I actually saw one producer on a talk show once that said that often they just had Robin's character on the script and "ad lib" typed in because Robin never missed a beat and it was always awsome! :)
So true, I remember the day of his passing, reading it on a newsstand here in San Francisco, on our way to sausolito for a last taste of Summer before school started, I still think I am going to run into him at the caffe trieste, or on Columbus avenue or in an improv class at fort Mason, or, in Green Apple books. What wonderful comments these are, I feel I can grieve here in community. He left us so much! The Mrs doubtfire house is still often crowded with people around it, looking to touch his spark that generously ignited all of us who love him. Yes, you rest brother. We love you.
This is the scene I’m doing for theatre...the fact that Robin Williams preformed this scene makes me honored to be able to even try to be deliver this as amazingly as he did. Rest in peace legend...

Got to give Carol Burnett a lot of credit for this skit. This stuff could only happen on her show. She recognised William’s talent before he became a huge hit. A lost venue for creativity.
thank you for this incredible gift!!!!
My goodness, Carol Burnett is brilliant in this clip. How few could play the foil to a Robin Williams.
I miss him so much. He has given me happiness in my life. I can't look at him without smiling.
Robin Williams had such a special gift of making everyone laugh
Hello
He was a Genius!! We all loved him. RIP Robin you are still a star in the sky.
Hello Maria
How are you doing today?
Robin Williams tried to make the world 🌎 a better PLACE 🎉😢we still miss him.
Robin Williams - You left our lives too soon, but thank you SO much for coming.
RIP
two of the funniest people that have ever lived
Yep!
NOT
Amen!
lived? Isn't Carol Burnett still alive??
@@c.rutherford yep
"is he in here?"
OMFG......that was great.
"WHAT???" *SLAM!!!* LOL!!!
One of the few times I saw Robin Williams break character and laugh helplessly when Carol keened.
"You gotta jump up, turn around, take a bale of cotton!" OMG! Hilarious. You can see Carol trying to stifle her laughter.
@@mszoomy It really could be considered racist, but Robin Williams didn't mean it that way.
@@ellenhage3611 no he didn't, just commenting on how things have changed
@@mszoomy That's your opinion.
@@ellenhage3611 not really an opinion, it's fact, things have changed, things that weren't really considered "racist" back then is today. I mean come on, Aunt Jemima isn't on a bottle idvsyrup anymore because it's "racist" LOL
I love the little stare-off near the end, like they were both trying to see who would crack first.
I grew up watching Carol, she always makes me laugh
Hello Christine, How are you doing?
@@kellyofuller4974Give it a rest, you old fart!
Carol Burnette collies the heck of Williams’ serve. There were two titans there, and so much respect.
I forgot Robin Williams had them do it AGAIN!!! I remember how fun it was to perform and how when it was done you always wanted to do it again, just shows how much he loved doing what he did. LOVE HIM!!! RIP ROBIN!
So I figured in the meantime, after Dad watched Walter, they (whoever They were) said, "Here's some laughs before bedtime."
I miss that innocence. 😔

Those were the days..... I watch certain channels on TV that play the classics. I can't watch the news or the crap they call comedy today. I wish we could go back in time.
Ralphie Mae is pretty dam funny!!
I can see robin smiling and trying not to laugh when she starts keaning loudly 😂
I thought Carol's keening was going to turn into her trademark Tarzan yell!
@@7karlheinz I thought I was the only one.
I would have never thought those two would have such great chemistry.
This was so funny!! I miss comedians like this in 2023
8:07, I almost choked on my coffee I laughed so hard. Two comedy legends feeding off each other. Their chemistry was excellent, and Carol really got Robin at the end.
You could say he really got _her_ at the end. And appreciated the compliment.
Two absolutely beautiful, brilliant, and hilarious people!
When Carol Burnett started screaming/ crying you could see Robin Williams grinning. They’re both very funny people.
Chanclas pp
That was the genius of Robin Williams, instant thoughts, lines, funny and funny. I think he took drugs to slow his brain down.
Yes much better
I actually saw one producer on a talk show once that said that often they just had Robin's character on the script and "ad lib" typed in because Robin never missed a beat and it was always awsome! :)
@@maggieherbord3043, actually it was on Mork And Mindy. They would set up the scene, then the next page just had "Robin goes crazy" written on it.
There will never be another Robin Williams. The way he passed breaks my heart. He was and always will be a legend.
two legends right there.
***** absolutely
Just like how there will never be another Mister Rogers...
I know I will always be Keening for Robin Williams 😢😢😢😢
So true, I remember the day of his passing, reading it on a newsstand here in San Francisco, on our way to sausolito for a last taste of Summer before school started, I still think I am going to run into him at the caffe trieste, or on Columbus avenue or in an improv class at fort Mason, or, in Green Apple books. What wonderful comments these are, I feel I can grieve here in community. He left us so much! The Mrs doubtfire house is still often crowded with people around it, looking to touch his spark that generously ignited all of us who love him. Yes, you rest brother. We love you.
I was never a fan of his but I never get tired of watching Carol, whomever she is with!! 😅
These two are great together
I have to remember that, "Thank you for coming is code for go away now!!!!" I have some people I need to use that on.
Me too
This is the scene I’m doing for theatre...the fact that Robin Williams preformed this scene makes me honored to be able to even try to be deliver this as amazingly as he did. Rest in peace legend...
Hello Stephanie
The best comedians ever ... met each other. How cool is that 😀😀😀😀
