MJ said Joe was his toughest defender. That should end all the chit-chat on the subject. These two guys had mutual respect for each other. Joe named his son "Jordan". They always shook hands. And don't forget, Joe was two inches shorter than Michael. 6'3" vs 6'5". That's a big advantage.
Joe Dumars was pretty much the only Bad Boy Piston, atleast he was the only big name in that team, that Michael Jordan respected. It was because they always played fairly against each other. No cheap shots or attempts to hurt each other.
Living in Detroit, I can say that Joe D was my favorite of the Bad Boys. He NEVER got the credit, or publicity Nationwide he deserved. The perfect basketball player & that's hard to say. He had Jordan seeing him in his sleep. GREAT player, teammate, G.M. (underrated as well) & a good person most of all

That's true, but in looking at what his playoff averages vs. other teams some of the stats are pretty amazing. I noticed that Dumars held him to well below his average in some games but then Mike would drop 40 in another, so that skewed the PPG average, so I broke their head to head games down individually. I hope you enjoy my nerdiness... In 88 Jordan averaged 45 PPG, 5 assists and shot .559 versus teams other that the Pistons. Against Detroit he averaged 27 PPG 5 assists and shot .491. (individual game points: 29, 36, 24, 23, 25) *** 18 points below his average and .068 lower. *** In 89 Jordan averaged 38 PPG 8 Assists and shot .534 versus teams other than the Pistons. Against Detroit he averaged 30PPG 7 assists and shot .460. (individual games 32, 46, 27, 23, 18, 32) ***8 points and 1 assist below his average and .074 lower. The 18 point game is pretty impressive. *** In 90 Jordan averaged 40 PPG 7 assists and shot .544 versus teams other than Detroit. Against Detroit he averaged 32 PPG 6 assists and shot .467. (individual games 32, 47, 42, 22, 29, 31, 20) ***8 points 1 assist below his average and .077 lower. *** In 91 the Bulls got the better of the Pistons. Jordan averaged 31 PPG 8 assists and shot .524 versus teams other than Detroit. (He shot poorly against the Knicks .489, but still averaged 33 points.) Against Detroit he averaged 29 PPG 7 assists and shot .535. (individual games 35, 33, 29, 22) *** 2 points and 1 assist below his average but slightly better shooting percentage .011)*** So, yes Jordan still scored about 30 PPG, and added about 6 or 7 Assists vs Dumars and the Pistons, that was considerably better than any other defender did.

Speaking of... Rodman as one of top 5 greatest freak athletes. Vinnie, the original microwave, Johnson. Scoring machine Mark Aguire. Isiah+JoeD as arguably top backcourt of all time(easily top 3). I've said the same thing for the past 30 years. But don't nobody wanna hear that, smh. The best thing I've seen about the BAD BOY PISTONS was 30 For 30: BAD BOYS

Joe Dumars is probably overlooked because he stayed with the Pistons his whole career, which is fine. I respect that decision being that it's where he won his 2 championships with the Bad Boys roster, but the thing is he still had so much to give that could have benefited another teams winning chances if he'd went some where else. I really think a guy like him would have been great in San Antonio or on the New York Knicks. Putting him with Patrick Ewing, not to mention John Starks in the backcourt could have helped the Knicks chances of beating Houston in 1994 that much better. He would have fit right in with their defense, and would have been able to add additional scoring that they needed.

I'm still looking for video of Isiah Thomas playing dirty and taking cheap shots against the Chicago Bulls or any other teams. Did Dumars play dirty against Jordan? People believe "The Jordan Rules" were a violent assault of Jordan. Seems like all the Pistons did was D the Bulls up. Jordan thought he was entitled to a free path to the basket, which the Pistons denied.
Jordan by far is the GOAT, but without Joe D and the Pistons, he would never have elevated his game. He entered the league in 1984 and did not win a title until 1991. So from 1984 to 1990 the Bulls could not get past Boston, LA or Detroit. Six years of losing is what made Jordan into the player he became. He dominated the 90s learning from the butt-kicking he got from Detroit. Scoring 50 points a game means nothing if you lose. You also have to remember, once the Bad Boys flag was retired, many ended up playing with Jordan (Rodman, Salley, and Edwards). They say you have to learn not to lose to become a winner. I believe Jordan is the perfect example of this.
Sean, I realize Dennis Johnson was 30 when And Michael Cooper (was 28/29 years old ) when MJ came into the league.... however I’d like to see those numbers/ matchups.
This video missed a big point of the Pistons philosophy and plan in the Bad Boy era for beating Jordan. The goal was to make anyone but Michael beat you. That’s the key. Dumars was a perfect point man in the Jordan Rules. Play Michael tough and physical. Pressure him at the point. Try to force him to his left. Collapse to make his shots hard and wear him out. It’s that simple. Do that and he’d press the issue and it would disrupt the Bulls offensive flow. At that time no one else on the Bulls was going to beat you, so Jordan would start with playing hero ball, so pressing Jordan, under constant pressure was a great game plan. Much like the 2004 Pistons figured out that if you pressured Kobe, he’d press the issue (even though he had Shaq and didn’t need to) and he’d start playing hero ball, which hurt his team. Once Jordan’s teammates proved themselves, he learned championship basketball isn’t predicated on hero ball, and the Bulls toughened up….6 titles… They would have never won that many had not Jordan learned to go through Detroit. Much like the Pistons would not have won their two consecutive without learning from the Celtics.
Joe Dumars took his high class all the way to the Hall of Fame, if Dumars could play without the dirty cheap-shot game more of the Pistons should have tried that
Why dont you make a vid on why bill laimbeer isnt in the hall of fame? 2x champ, 4x allstar, 3x wnba champ (coach) and 2x wnba coach of the yr. Thats a pretty good resume not 1st ballot but still

Detroit had a team plan to guard Jordan, the plan started with Dumars. Joe was a fantastic player.
The whole team was built on hard nosed defense and not much scoring aside from Zeke, Dumars, Aguirre and Johnson.

Once Jordan’s teammates proved themselves, he learned championship basketball isn’t predicated on hero ball, and the Bulls toughened up….6 titles…
They would have never won that many had not Jordan learned to go through Detroit. Much like the Pistons would not have won their two consecutive without learning from the Celtics.
Great video and all but Sean you have already shown us this particular video before in times past so why show it again regardless anyway.
Love me some George Blaha!
Count that baby and a foul
He was simply the best to have actually guarded Michael Jordan apart from Gary Payton without a doubt and according to MJ himself period.
@Felix BruynsNah! I don't think so cause you're so wrong and i don't agree with you.
Felix Bruyns no one locked Jordan down. You must be tweeking...
Jordan rules started over a hotel phone call between Thomas and Chuck daly
Joe Dumars took his high class all the way to the Hall of Fame, if Dumars could play without the dirty cheap-shot game more of the Pistons should have tried that
Why dont you make a vid on why bill laimbeer isnt in the hall of fame? 2x champ, 4x allstar, 3x wnba champ (coach) and 2x wnba coach of the yr. Thats a pretty good resume not 1st ballot but still
The fact that joe dumars studied Michael Jordan was pretty clever
Look at that jordan popped collar
MJ said Joe Dumars gave him Nightmares, & also pushed him to be a better Basketball player, Just like Larry Bird pushed MJ to his limits…
Only reason Jordan said that was because he wanted to make sure Isiah heard it about dumars. Jordan liked dumars as a person. Lol
The one piston I didn’t hate
I had Mitch Richmond basketball card when i was 13 Jordan said on the back of the card Mitch was his toughest task
Mitch was the toughest to guard, but Joe was his toughest defender.
Joe Dumars always looked like a 35 year old man his entire life
Umm he was born on the 24th of May, not March. How disrespectful 😤
The question should be was any1 capable of getting stops against goat.
kings new GM, looks smart and good. Let's Go KINGS!!!! #FireLukeWalton
10:15 lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Isaiah Thomas didn't have to do him like that.
Geez was this about Dumars or Jordan?
Actually it's about both of them
Hoping you don’t rely on analytics that did not apply to the league back then. I am watching.
Joe Dumars didn't make the top 75 players, that's messed up. Michael Jordan said Joe Dumars was the toughest defender to play against.
A HARD TIME was 31ppg on a 48FG%….
What about Ron Harper....
Damn! Joe's ft% was two better than MJ's. I wonder what his numbers compare against Payton during that period?
Dumars contained Jordan and literally nobody else could say they did that
He is the only player who has received respect from Michael.
You know what the 🐐 Kobe Bryant would had done to that defense and joe dumars? SMDH.
first 3D player in 90s
Do you mean “How WELL...?”
Limiting Jordan to below 48% is the best defense on him 😅
Gary payton 37 % on jordan 1996 finals.😭
🤔 averaged over 30 pts and shooting just under 50% smh yaw can compare and break it down however yaw like but growing up playing bball that was never considered stopping or slowing down anybody, lets just stick to MJ being a GOAT
No doubt, he's the best defensive guard
Joe Dumars is very good at man-to-man guard, but he is not good at contested the shot because of his height
MJ liked Dumars other pistons not so much
Stop the Bullshit! Jordan said it....yeah..Jordan got his points...so did Joe D
True but Dennis Rodman....and the Jordan rule...I guess your field goal % would be below 50. Joe Durmars was bad cat but he had help
You better have help against Jordan and I don't care what team you're on.
Gary Payton was not as good at guarding Jordan as Dumars, lol. That's a myth.
Joe was a better defender than the Glove. Sorry, but he was.
