i give Payton a lot of creidt for game 4 vs Jordan. but game 5 MJ played pretty good, and shot 50%(he didn't have a great 4th Q, but was finding guys open and they were missing). then game 6, the other guys on seattle played MJ more than Payton, so Gary can't get credit for this game. MJ was 3-4FG vs Payton(75%). he was 2-15 vs everyone else (plus doubles). so the others (mainly Hawkins) get more credit for this game. Gary did have good ball denial, so credit to him there. Jordan cooked them the first 3 games, and it was 3-0, that's a wrap, he played great to get them that 3-0 lead you're not coming back from, no way they're gonna lose at that point. so the Bulls got a little bored and didn't play as sharpe as needed the next 2 games. but in the end, MJ and the Bulls got the job done, and these bulls ended with the best regular season and playoffs record combined ever (87-13) 87%... the 2016 warriors finished a combined 88-18 (83%). that 87% win percentage will most likely never be broken

  • @justinclark369
    @justinclark369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

Great video...you should look to include shooting percentages as a way to further show if someone struggled in a game. For example, Game 1 Jordan shot 50% on 18 fga. Game 2 he shot 40% on 22 fga (not a great game despite finishing with 29). Game 3 just under 50% on 23 shots and 36 points (a classic MJ performance) Game 4 Jordan shot 32% on 19 shots to get his 23 points. Game 5 MJ was back to 50% on 22 shots but for the first time in the series shot less than 10 free throws so ended with only 26. Game 6 Jordan shot an abysmal 26% from the field on 19 shots for 22 points. These number confirm that there was a noticable effect of GP guarding MJ. Even when Jordan had a good shooting game against him such as in Game 5, Payton was able to keep him off the line and limit MJ's effectiveness.

I would say that the evidence shows that those Finals games were more a function of Jordan simply not having as good a game than it was of Payton "stopping" him. Thanks Sean for this video, this is one of my favourite as it's more talking about defense than offense. People just care about players shining offensively, but what I love the most is teams playing hard on defense. And come on, Gary Payton, people should talk more about him, he was not only one of the best point guards I've seen, but defensively he was probably the best one. If I could should choose all the best players on my team, he definitely would be one of them and I think I'd even pick him as my starting point guard because of his defense. Over Magic, John Stockton, Isiah, I'm a mad die hard Knicks 90's fan and I'd love to see guys giving all their best on defense as he was always doing. I loved them all but with Payton I'd be sure my backguard defense would be secured.

I would have to do some research, but to my knowledge MJ had never let said opposing players get to him and cause him to lose his composure and retaliate against those who would love to see him get tossed out of a big game. Furthermore I was 16 years old at the time of these NBA Finals, and the Bulls took home the championship, and in the end that is ALL that matters!!

He even says Mike is the greatest basketball player that ever played, in his opinion, and all you could do was try to frustrate him and make him work hard to tire him out. Great clip with great insight. The only thing I’m not feeling is that in Last Dance he says George Karl needed his offense so they kept him off Jordan to not tire him out. Here he says that he had an injury coming in so they didn’t put him on Jordan to protect the injury and conserve him. Come on GP, that’s suspect. There’s highlights from the season after this where Jordan is scoring against Payton so easily that Matt Goukas on NBC says “I think he likes being guarded by Payton.” 🤷‍♂️
He had tendinitis in his knees and it was killing him as the finals wore on. That’s why he dropped several pounds for the 96-97 season, to lessen the load on his knees.

If your video includes the regular season stats prior to the 1996 finals, why not show what happened AFTER the finals as well, so as to give a fuller picture of how well Payton defended the 96-98 mj?
If you want to say Gary was leveling up every year against Jordan, you got to show ALL THE MATCHUPS. BeCause after the finals, Jordan also got
    45 (w)
    32 and 18 (w)
    40 (w)
    and 27 (l).
    Gary vs Mj 4/12.
    No ring.
    Losing record.
    No problem with the glove.

From someone who was rooting for the Sonics to win that series (Kemp filled my void that Jordan left when he played baseball) I am confident to say that those 2 wins were a gimmie. The Bulls were on a tear that season and a couple seasons after that.

Gary, was a solid defender, without question.
Better than Dennis Johnson, Michael Cooper, and Joe Dumars at that position is up for debate.
(I’m the guy that used to work for the Boston Bruins, so I’ve got some detailed stories)
In the 1993 Conference finals, (against the New York Knicks) A sideline sports analyst averaged Michael’s vertical on his jump shot.
It was 30 inches , on his jump shot alone.
His Jump Shot! That means his knee is literally by your head before you had a chance to even put a hand in his face.
My point is there were so many isolations for Michael, that it was impossible to neutralize him one on one.
I’ve got Jordan as the greatest at his position. Jordan as the best all around player is still up for debate Sean.

Has anyone else commented on the fact that this guy said "Gary went to the University of Oregon"??? There's an enormous difference between UO (the Ducks) and OSU, Oregon STATE University. The BEAVERS. It ceases to amaze me how little the eastern part of this country knows about the west. "He went to Oregon". Which one? "Isn't there just one"?

The fact that coach Carl didn't let Payton (defensive player of the year) guard MJ until game 4, despite sore calf or not was not a good move. Its the finals, push all chips in. I know NO ONE can stop the Goat including Payton but he could at least made him work harder for his buckets and wear him down a little.
That and one of my favorite dunks ever was when Kemp spun baseline on Rodman and shit all over him.

Played with gp in elementary, and highschool! He's a Dogg! ONE of the greatest representers of OAKLAND basketball style! I come from mr.means camp( gp's Dad!) If you say basketball, you have to think about gp! Truly gifted and attribute to our coaches engenious! As well as , Oakland's level of playing the guard position! It's a power guard, where most have power forwards. Like Barkley! We have gp, a power guard! Our coaches believe in 4 guards and a forward! And defenses pressing the whole game!
