How England Caused Germany's 2014 World Cup Win

  • In September 2001, and England team under the new management of Sven-Göran Eriksson travelled to Munich and beat Germany 5-1 in their own backyard, in what is often cited as being one of England's greatest ever results.
    Over the next 15 years, Germany reached at least the semi-finals of seven out of a possible eight major tournaments, and they won the FIFA World Cup in 2014 - meanwhile England failed to get beyond the quarter finals at either the World Cup or the Euros.
    So in this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at both Germany and England in the 21st century, the reason for the two potential Euro 2020 rivals' contrasting fortunes, and how England accidentally caused an era of greatness within German football.

    Hey Alfie, I just thought of a cracking idea for a video you could do on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig. They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.

      The English media is absolutely brutal with their men’s football team. I was watching the game versus Iceland when England was losing and the commentary was absolutely horrible. I’m neutral but it was hard listening to commentators trashing their own country like that. I’m sure they would never speak about a rival team in that way. The print media loves to tear the men’s football team down too. I don’t know about their television analysts on sports shows because I don’t watch British television. Overall, the British media really enjoys hyping athletes and other celebrities way beyond what reasonable expectations would be, and then they tear them down with glee. There is not much moderation.
      On the other hand, the BBC women’s artistic gymnastics commentary is so biased in favour of Great Britain it’s actually hard to listen to. Again, speaking as a neutral. It used to be endearing when they only had one or two gymnasts with a long shot at medaling, but now that they’re dominant, it is way too much. I’ve never heard another country be this biased in favor of their own team.
      The British media are all so much kinder regarding their women’s football team. It’s just the men that seem to get them extremely upset. I don’t know if they’re the same with men’s rugby?

England had retained their team from 1966 and had their strongest team ever,but Germany avenged them and eliminated them from quarter finals. At next World Cup final 1974 between Germany vs Holland,the referee was from England.So in 1st minute he awarded penalty to Holland and German Captain Franc Beckanbau went to complain to referee and accused him of being biased Englishman.We could mention semi final in 1990 also,the teams find themselves matched in big games.Now at Euros 2020 they meet in quarter finals,we will have another barn burner again. Both England and Germany have diverse teams,so its gonna be a great match,may the best team win.

    As someone who has lived in Germany (20 years) I have to say you are talking absolute nonsense when you say the Germans don't take the England/Germany rivalry seriously. They have always gone on about that goal in 1966 and have never let us forget it. The Netherlands rivalry is much more visceral for them, that's true, but the England rivalry has also been important because of the history. I don't know who advised you, but they are just plain wrong.

    • @renerpho
      @renerpho 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      German here. There's a difference between a rivalry, and remembering a specific event (the 1966 goal). To be rivals, you have to care about results more than usual, or fear the other team. Neither is true for Germany vs. England. Yes, people remember the 1966 goal, and that will come up whenever the two face each other. But that's more of a historical curiosity (and a running gag) than anything else.
      That said, putting much emphasis on the Netherlands misses the possibly even bigger rivalry with Italy.

    • @renerpho
      @renerpho 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      An indication of the difference may be how Germans reacted to England missing the Euro 2008, vs. the Netherlands missing the 2002 World Cup. The former didn't register at all (in fact, I didn't remember that England hadn't qualified until now, and I doubt many Germans would). The latter became THE story of the 2002 World Cup in Germany, and the song written about it is played to this day whenever the Netherlands embarrass themselves in football.

    I think that the revamp came as a result of the 1998 and 2000 tournament failures. I doubt the 5:1 loss in a qualifying match even registered that much in Germany. I heard it the first time when I was in England in 2004 (3 years later talking about a qualifier says it all really) and had to look it up.
    IMO what prolonged Germany's rebuilt was the accidentally successful 2002 world cup. The one that Oliver Kahn almost won on his own.
    The current problem is that Germany produces an enormous amount of great midfielders, wingers and fullbacks. It doesn't produce strikers and few center backs. Also Löw is now in office for too long. It's only fitting that both Merkel and Löw step down this year. They have been in "office" almost eternally (since 2005 and 2006). I value Flick, but I am disappointed Klopp will not be the new manager (yet).

      Thank you for sharing your opinion! I have never heard of this 5-1 game before and I’m definitely old enough to remember it. I guess with it being a qualifier I wasn’t paying attention. Reading the comments on these videos is very instructive because there are so many different perspectives.

      It’s well known in Germany that the result was such a surprise that they vowed never to let it happen again and therefore created and updated the infrastructure that has produced and continues to produce world class talent within Germany

      Wimbledon in 1988, surely? Given the Dons rapid rise through the football League and the fact they were playing one of the best Liverpool teams, and maybe the finest ever English club side up to that point.

    2:40 - You can arguably add Muller to that list now! I'd forgotten about the Deisler miss, which is to be expected I suppose.

    I was in the Stretford end for that Beckham goal v Greece. The Greek fans stayed behind after the game cheering about drawing with us (and finishing ahead of Germany of course).
    Imagine a few years later Greece became European Champions

    Don‘t worry Englishmen! Your time will come. I know it has been a long time and you are longing for positive results but you‘re team looks exciting, the players have great quality and they certainly will develop. However my only concern is probably the Premier League bias. Some of Your best players should play all across Europe’s top leagues. It will add some flair and new perspectives to the national team. In Germany we had great successes with a mix of Bayern Players and key legionnaires. Sancho and Bellingham for example made the move and so far it worked out brilliantly for them. Even Reiss Nelson looked when playing at Hoffenheim.
    So I am really looking forward to a potential match between England and Germany with great football and good banter. 👍
    P.S.: Why is Sancho not starting? I hope Southgate has a plan.

    I remember my dad celebrating the 5-1 win and took a photo of the score on teletext...teletext for anyone who doesn't know was like the Internet for TV before smart TVs were a thing.
