    Captain Haynes and his crew were heroes. That scenario is almost guaranteed in total lose, and it's so sad that so many died, but the fact that 2/3s survived a total hydraulic/control failure is amazing.

      I believe that Captain Haynes had what might be the best 'Dad Joke' ever. In the final moments of lining up for their landing (as much as a 'they have zero hydraulics' plane can allow 'landing'), per Wikipedia's article on "Flight 232":
      Sioux City Approach: "United Two Thirty-Two Heavy, the wind's currently three six zero at one one; three sixty at eleven. You're cleared to land on any runway."
      Haynes: "[laughter] Roger. [laughter] You want to be particular and make it a runway, huh?"

    Approach: "You're cleared to land on any runway."
    Haynes: "You want to be particular and make it a runway, huh?"
    This was a real quote from the captain.

      Are you folks referring to the "Sioux City" incident? This has several sections...but if you mean that, there was a docu-movie about it as told from the Sioux City side of things which I thought was very good. It was a 1992 movie called "A Thousand Heroes". If you don't mean Flight 232...then I dunno, sorry!

      There was a movie based on the air crash, in which the head of rescue had practiced, all sorts of scenarios, which at first one they did, all people had died, as time went on, the rescue people got better, which helped when the plane had crashed, so not that many people had died, figuratively speaking. Also, it was shown on a TV series, Air Disaster, aka Mayday.

    • @EShirako
      @EShirako ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For anyone who was wondering, the 1992 docu-movie about it as told from Sioux City's side of it was named "A Thousand Heroes". It was really good, and delightfully dramatic in some of the best ways. They seemed to do a very good job of telling the 'proper' story of the land crews, even including the things like how it was shift-change time and 'changing runways at the last moment' and everything. If you liked watching the 232 Air Disaster thing, I think I would suggest you try to find this...the only issue is that it's hard to find to be able to watch it!

    • @LadyYT100
      @LadyYT100 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one thing that they did, was to use the footage, that a lone person was able to catch, as the plane had crashed landed.

      @@LadyYT100yeah that show was fantastic at re-enacting the crashes and showing what happened to cause them. The DC-10 was in a few episodes and it was maintenance incompetence that usually caused crashes. So tragic.

    I can see it now, after falling 35,000 feet after my cross-country flight broke apart and I survived the fall I'm being interviewed about the ordeal and I explain how after getting over the shock of falling I remembered seeing an Infographics video about what to do and I saw a section of seats and I angled myself towards them and crawled on sitting in one and strapping myself in then crashing through the tree canopy I survived. Yes, thanks to Infographics I'm now world famous and being asked to appear on several late-night talk shows. And people said I was wasting my life watching silly animated hypothetical videos. The joke's on them.

    In the Boeing segment, the guy said that first air service in Tampa took about 23 minutes to go 21 miles. They said the car would have taken 20 hours & the train 4 to 8 hours. Are you kidding me. I know some trains are slow but I'm not buying that the trains top speed was 5 miles an hour and the cars average speed was 1 mph. I understand things went a little slower back then, but not like this guy is reporting. The early cars could get up to 25 or 30+ mph easily & a train could easily get up to 25 to 40 mph.

    So the NTSB and all the airlines operating today don't think infants are important enough to have their own safety restraints. Just think about that. What makes a infant any less human ? We all know the infants did not choose to board a airplane unrestrained so how is that fair ? Ask the tough questions and don't accept sugar coated answers until they properly resolve this problem.

    • @TheTrueAdept

    • @wonderstruck.
      @wonderstruck. ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is not the issue. The FAA’s opinion is that having unrestrained lap children is dangerous. But it is far less dangerous than having that infant ride in a car instead because the parents chose to drive instead of buying another ticket.
      Driving is just that deadly.

    • @lukehallam1881
      @lukehallam1881 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is probably similar to the reason that shoulder belts aren’t required on planes. It’s not clear what child restraints or shoulder belts would be attached to since they have to be anchored into a structural component to do anything. Seatbelts in planes just have to keep passengers from being thrown out of their seats and complex restraints can make it difficult to evacuate.
      Also, it’s not necessarily a fair comparison but as far as numbers go considering 1/11 lap children died while more than 1/3 of other passengers died it seems like lap children are safer than average and the safety measures work ok.

    Lap children is a complicated issue.
    The NTSB believes having unrestrained lap children is dangerous in event of turbulence or a crash-which is obvious.
    The FAA believes the same, but it ALSO believes that requiring parents to buy tickets for infants will cause many to choose to drive instead. And an infant in a car is in far more danger than an infant on a plane. Driving is extremely dangerous.

    • @RoundShades
      @RoundShades ปีที่แล้ว

      You're not wrong, and that does make it complicated. By that logic, planes basically don't need safety features as long as it has every feature required to prevent catastrophic loss of the vehicle. Which isn't inaccurate. I'd suggest, besides reverse facing seats for passengers, perhaps adding infant straps and all due impact resistance and crumple cushion to the overhead cargo, because there will almost always be an amount of bags that can be thrown beneath a seat or some other place where it isn't loosely free, and the cargo if designed slightly better could definitely keep something more survivable.

    When I a kid, I was flying by myself to visit family and the plane hit an unseen pocket of turbulence and I floated for about 30 as I was on my way back to my seat from the washroom.

    If I remember the miracle on the Hudson thing correctly, the real villain was the airline which tried to throw Sully under the bus and blame the crash on him right away to avoid any liability themselves.
    I hate flying and if I can manage without flying for the rest of my life I will happily do so. I don't mind trains or boats, though. I don't really like long bus trips as much though, because there odds someone will drive recklessly and hit you or that something else will go wrong is too high and you can't carry much in the way of emergency supplies like you can in your own vehicle. Even in your own vehicle, if there's very dense brush and/or steep slopes it's entirely possible to end up going of the road and not be found until well after you're dead. For trains, most drivers have the sense to not drive or park on train tracks, and a derailed train doesn't go unnoticed for long and is easy to find. For boats- sure a sunken boat site can be hard to find, but I can swim and I'm fat enough to float naturally, which are significant advantages as long as I always stay on or near deck. As long as the deck isn't crowded and the weather is tolerable that's perfect for me. I actually love being on boats. But for planes I can't fly, it's too above the ground and at too high speeds to truly feel safe, so that's just a big no. Also I'm now afraid of strangers so being trapped in an enclosed space high in the air with two to three hundred strangers is an absolute nightmare for me.
