    Everything here is true.
    Oh yeah, Asian parents want you to eat a lot but then call you fat later. I ate four bowls of beef noodles and my grandma was like, "You eat so less! Eat more!!" And then I said I was 46kg and she said, "So fat."

    The advantage of being Asian for me was that I never got jumped at school. I was the only Asian in my school from elementary to high school and for sure I got called names. But the bullies never dared to touch me because of the stereotype that all Asians know Kungfu.
    I seriously got waited up by a group of guys after school one time. I just put up my fists and made some Bruce Lee noises and nobody dared to swing first, they all chickened out eventually. That bluff kept me unharmed all the way to college. ^^ I even made friends with some of the guy bullies thanks to that.

      ***** I don't know if I can call those kids back then ignorant, because on the off chance that the Asian kid really did know kungfu they were smart to not get into that fight.
      My story is only proof that there is a good thing to bad stereotypes. But it sure did save my behind. XD

      Haha it's a really advantage for boys more than girls, but it makes me remember a story of my mom's friend. One guy tried to steal something of his restaurant and he followed the guy and that guy was all chickened out and today that guy respects him and always give greetings to him haha

    my mom still has contact with her high school classmates, sometimes all of them go to the restaurant with each other. My grandmother goes to the restaurant tot eat with her highschool classmates too, and she is 70+ years old. This is one of the things I love about China.

      what?

    • @cicinomaden
      @cicinomaden 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes for Indonesian too. People still have reunions with even KG and elementary friends...way into their 70s. Friendships can go really deep there. Though it isn't impossible in America to have deep friendships, but I have never experienced it as a whole class thing. In America that kind of closeness maybe for 2 or 3 people. Also, students still take care of their former teachers. If a former student finds out a former teacher is having some kind of hardship, then there'll be a collection of funds organized to help this former teacher by the whole class.

    Man, after getting hooked on that Fresh Off The Boat show (which is super funny) and watching this video, it sounds awesome to be asian. My family is not close at all. When I was 10-14, I used to skate a lot with a vietnamese kid named Binh (may not have spelled that correctly) and when we did a sleepover at his house his mom would always cook us so much food. He moved away at the end of the 8th grade, I think because of his dad's job, but it was really cool how his family so readily accepted me when I was a scruffy latchkey kid in the 80-90's. Binh was a rad dude and a great skater.

    • @miamazingness
      @miamazingness 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha that sounds like me, but my friend is Indian. Her mom was always trying to feed us, and I was like, "Can your family please adopt me?" And her mom made this really good rum/plum cake for holidays which she hated, so she used to smuggle me large portions of this cake so that she wouldn't have to eat it. And of course it was delicious... XD

    I'm Southeast Asian and, when I turned 55 last February, my son posted my photo on Instagram, talking about how young I look at 55 (yes, that's my photo, no botox, no surgery). The funny thing is that I thought my language exchange partner, who is Japanese, was in his twenties. He's actually in his mid-forties. He, on the other hand, thought I was several years younger than he was. Now he knows I am older.^^
    The rice? Yes! I just mentioned to my son yesterday, "They say carbs are the enemy? Then how come when I eat rice I get thinner?" Asians can eat rice and not get fat.
    On schooling, loans, etc, though, my son was able to secure a loan on his own (for a car) at nineteen with no guarantor (he's twenty-one now). He pays for his own schooling (he is a Cosmetologist, he is furthering his education with Redken) and does not accept any help from either me or my ex-husband. He talks about eventually moving, but I want to keep him with me! T_T

    the wedding thing applies to my culture too.. the parents usually pay for everything.. and people almost always bring you presents.. you can pretty much get most of your appliances given to you.. and a lot of money.. and if your family is rich enough.. houses.. cars.. timeshare holiday packages.. land.. even businesses and jobs can be given to you as wedding presents.. some people pretty much get set up for life. Best scenario is if you have relative who dislike each other and try to one up each other with the cost of their wedding gift to you lol

    Firstly, thanks you guys, I recently found ur channel, its been a really relaxing and funny watching those interesting video, especially after a long day of study or work. it is kind of a must watch of me now.
    secondly, I know u both grow up under western surroundings, at the same time with chinese parents, it makes sense that u get used to western lifestyles and customs knowing chinese culture. I can sense a little discrimination against some chinese traditions, like wedding ceremony. what i want to say is, as chinese offsprings we cannot just selectively choose the money in the red envelop and despite the bowing and kotow, as those r not only red tape, they are also the way we show our respect to our parents.
    Also wedding ceremony in china is not only about the marrying couple, it is also about combination of two families and the combination of social connections of both families. clients of the wedding, i would say, a majority of them r friends of their parents, and small part is the couple's friends. it is how the society runs which is totally different from western countries. this is why young couples cant just do whatever they want, as it is not only about them, it is also about their parents and the whole family.
    in additon, it is true that we make money holding wedding ceremony, but it is also true that we have to give away "fenzi"--red envelop every time our friends get married.
    anyway, i like ur videos, and most of the time u guys r objective. BTW i'm really proud of being a chinese and i can name more benefits of being a chinese. and hope u can talk more about chinese culture in the future. Do u listen to chinese or other asain songs, i'm thinking maybe u can make comparison between asain and western music and culture behind that.

      +Linh Le Generally, almost everyone gets bullied. I got picked on when I was in school too. I just made friends with the other people. Then, my friends would stick up for me when I got bullied. Helped me a lot and they would make me feel better about myself.
      I learned a long time ago that I can't make friends with everyone because not everyone would want to be my friend. But, true friends would come stand by you when you need them.

    • @chickyL
      @chickyL 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +chocoboblue99 I mentioned that because Dan and Mike said Asians are not attacked due to the notion that we all know Kungfu. Which is not true at all because there are so many incidents where we are targeted because we are smaller and less likely to report to the police (and of course it's also because we tend to keep our cash at home). I know Asian people who formed/joined gangs because they were beaten up at school when they were small.

      Italians and Spaniards and many in South America also tend to live with their families and have extended families but I am going to be honest that this is the first time I learned that you can stay with your parents in OZ. I do admire the independence that Americans want to instill in their kids but as an Asian, I prefer the family values we have though they can be suffocating as well. However, we do need a support system and I would prefer that my family will be my support system.

  • @MobbinMic

    Trust me Mike, at least in my opinion, having problems gaining weight isn't fun, at least not in America. I'm not Asian, but I've been working out pretty hard for about 3 or 4 years now and have only been able to put on a couple of pounds. I get so many annoying comments from thicker people, especially if they're relatives. Some examples I frequently hear are "You're so skinny, you need do some push ups" or "Dang boy, do you eat" etc. I've recently figured out I had stomach problems, so hopefully I can gain more weight whenever I these stomach issues resolved. But anyway, it is annoying to have problems gaining weight because it makes you feel like time spent on working out is useless and on top of that many people mock you for not being able to gain as much weight as them, even though you eat and work out plenty.

    • @ruedelta
      @ruedelta 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MobbinMic Being on the other side subjects you to the ever growing chorus of "lose some weight you're too fat!" Granted we seem to show a lot less of the weight, but Asians pick up on that hidden weight and can tell that you're actually 180 lbs and only 5'7".

    • @MobbinMic
      @MobbinMic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rufei Yeah I do hear Asian families do that, that's why I was saying I'm not Asian. In my families(black and white), it would be really rude for someone to comment on someone else being overweight, but it's acceptable for the thicker people to talk down about the thinner ones, which gets really annoying.

      Also, traditionally women in Asian cultures didn't have the need to keep looking beautiful after marriage and getting kids, so they switched from the "beautiful young maiden" mode to "Asian housewife" mode. These days many people want to look beautiful even after having kids, so you can see plenty of Asian ladies working hard to preserve their beauty even in the old age and continuing to look really nice as a result.

    I got lots of compliments being asian too here in italy. Like, rightnow i'm already 31 years old and i already have twin babies. whenever my twins and i will ride a bus,or go shopping and staying at the park, italians would talk to me saying i'm too young to have babies and i was like telling them, no i'm on the right age already sir and ma'am. i was 30 when i had my twins and now i'm 31.. and they were always got shocked saying i look like 17 ahaha..
    There are also time in my late 20's whenever i buy cigarette or alcohol for my friends in cigarette store and bars, the owners would always ask for my id.. or they can't sell anything to me.. it's 10% annoying but 90% i feel proud and happy that italians thinks im young ir a teen ahahha

    After watching many of tour videos I realised that It is very interesting in how many ways Brazilian culture is closer to Chinese culture than to the USA

    For me it wasn't always easy and it's still not. the bullying got even at a stage that I had nightmares about the bullies. And I'm adopted, so we don't do Chinese traditions. But I'm thankful for my good body. 😇

    The making money at your wedding thing is also at Somali weddings. Guests have to bring money and/or expensive jewelry or they'll lose face. Also, depending on how well you know the family, you sometimes have to give money to the parents and siblings too. Somali weddings are more stressfull for the guests. It's like a competition about whose the richest guest :D
