Songwriter Don Walker said of the song: "I made a conscious attempt to write a hit single. It was a matter of pride and craft. And then I thought, 'What'll I write it about...' I wrote it about pregnancy termination and it was a massive hit." At the time of release, many people seemed unaware of the subject matter Singer Jimmy Barnes said, "Even though nobody knew what "Choirgirl" was about, everybody felt an emotional connection." Peace out.

The song's about an abortion. The band are not being biased. Just describing an experience the best way they could. The song was written by the keyboard player Don Walker.

This is a song about teenage pregnancy & abortion. "Looking like a choir girl" in her white hospital gown and crying like a refugee - the way they cry with despair. One nurse to hold her...one nurse to wheel her down the corridor of healing...visual words!!!

Not many would have thought about the lyrics to the song back in the day. Only years later did I find out about the whys and wherefores and it hit me hard as an ex girlfriend went that path with me after we broke up over something really stupid.
I didn't even know she was pregnant and found out from her cousin about 6 months after the fact.
If I had have known I would have been proud to be the father of that child, I ended up becoming a Dad two years later with someone else in 1995 and she also a Mum in 1996.
I guess it just wasn't meant to be. I still think about it a lot.

Quite a haunting number. Certainly surprised me that Chisel were capable of this. I know 'Khe Sanh' is also a ballad, but this one's different.

  • @cmloz4054
    @cmloz4054 ปีที่แล้ว +7

It was a song written about one of the band member's girlfriend getting an abortion. The lyrics had to be kept deliberately vague, as back in those days a frank description would have seen the song banned from radio play. It's a pretty touching song when you know the meaning. 'Looking like a choir girl, crying like a refugee' is a vivid and sad description of a teenage girl in that predicament.

Easy to struggle with the subject of the song, as it is a subject that not many bands sing about, particularly back then. But knowing makes the song even more poignant. I have always loved that a real rocking band that basically defined masculinity for a generation of Australians could approach issues like this with such tenderness and understanding, particularly considering the time period. They showed that real men could be supportive and caring without being weak.

I know this will rub some people the wrong way, but as somebody that had been seeing Cold Chisel perform in the Countdown studios since their first appearance and knowing their (hit) songs, I felt ''Chour Girl'' was step forward for the band. It was nice that they took a tender approach to a sensitive issue.

Countdown was trying to get us interested in Prince with ''Dirty Mind'', ''Controversy'' and ''Sexuality'', but we were kinda thinking that he was nice, but not new enough. Then ''1999'' came out.. and the rest is history.

I know you’ll already have lots of comments on what the song is about so no need to embellish on that.
For other Chisels (I forget which ones you’ve done), I’d suggest:
    Flame Trees
    Standing On The Outside
    Khe Sanh
    Forever Now
Ghost Town into Saturday Night (two separate songs but Saturday Night follows the brief but punchy Ghost Town and they almost run them into each other on the album - quite a good contrast
    Four Walls
    Janelle
Bow River (studio version is a must)
    and do many more.

Yeah, I watched the Bow River reaction, although it was a live version which I think is great but works better once people are familiar with the studio version.

Don't you guys understand that there are hundreds of songs whose lyrics are somewhat cryptic. Just because you don't understand what the song is about does not make the lyrics odd. The writer knows what's its about and that's all that matters. Why do you need the meaning of a song's lyrics spelled out for you? It really annoys me when music reactors do this. Why is it so important to understand what a song is about? Isn't it enough to just listen and enjoy?
