Driving a racetrack on a racetrack
Since I had nothing better to do (Summer vacations here), I decided to go through all 1110 car entries (one for each individual model present in the game's GT2.VOL file) and take note of all car names as they show up in the different regions (NTSC-J, NTSC-U/C and PAL) as well as labels and other things that may differ depending of the version you play. I came across some interesting info that would be nice to take note of:
1:30 - This soft top Elise is, for some reason, a placeholder for what would be the RM of the Motorsport Elise. The idea was scrapped and the body was left as it is now.
1:54 - The D-Rights MX-5 has no label in the NTSC-J version, just like the Silvia.
2:29 - Its body code (ul40r) suggests that it was originally intended to be a Plymouth, but somehow ended up as a GT40.
6:50 - Like the GT40 Mark III, this AMG E55 was originally intented to be an European Ford, judging by its body code (efnon).
15:04 - The RM of the Exxon "2000GT GT" has, for some reason, no label in the NTSC-J version. The road version has the "Toyota 2000GT" label from the Esso variant.
23:17/23:43 - Both the Integra LS and GS are hidden body-only cars.
24:17/24:46/25:36 - All these Acura RMs are hidden.
26:27 - Apparently the NTSC-J v1.0 version has the same RM as the Honda NSX Type-R, but with Acura logos.
27:36/28:01 - Same fate as most Acura Integra RMs.
28:19/28:41 - These 200SXs aren't available in NTSC-J (body-only, like in NTSC-U/C), only in PAL.
29:05 - This car is known as the Altezza AS200 in NTSC-J and as the Lexus IS in NTSC-U/C. It's completely hidden in PAL.
29:37 - The GT350 from NTSC-J is slightly different from the overseas versions, with its RM having a different sideskirt.
33:57 - Like the label suggests, it was originally supposed to be another MX-5 1.6 RM.
Some other notes:
-The Fiat 500 Sporting has a second RM option which is hidden (memory code '5D 60 4C 13').
-There's a hidden [R]Ford Ka body in the disc (memory code '42 10 78 11'). It's unknown if it was a RM intended for use with the regular Ka, or with a scrapped alternate model (the VW Golfs all have the same RM model with different wheels).
-There's a duplicate [R]Mazda Familia/Protegé/323 body in the disc (memory code '1C C7 3C 0B'). Only difference is that it has no label, not a big deal.
-The Nismo GT-R LM Road Car is hidden in the NTSC-J version for some reason.
-The 300ZX 2+2 '94 (naxvn, 18 28 2E 18), the 300ZX 2-seater (nax3n, 18 21 2E 18) and the 300ZX Turbo (naxsn, 58 27 2E 18) are hidden and body-only in the NTSC-J version. They also have no label.
-The overseas versions of the Shelby GT350 and GT500 are body-only in the NTSC-J version. They still have their proper labels though.
i wonder if the 2 d-rights cars were just there for the licences only.

I have owned all Gran Turismo's and love them all, its just amazing to see how far graphics have come in the past 15-16 yrs from the first GT, lets hope to see it go on for at least another 16 yrs. Great memory lane vid :)

Actually, Opel is accessable in not just German, but also in French, Italian and Spanish languages. So essentially, Vauxhall cars are only available, if you play the PAL version in English.

Correct, actually Vauxhall cars are only sold in UK as rebranded Opel models.
Even though the game was released in Australia and New Zealand, where Opel cars are sold as Holden cars, gamers from both countries who play this get Vauxhall cars instead, which is quite odd, if only SCEE would have made a special A-NZ version of the game, which would not only include Opel cars branded as Holden Cars, but also cars exclusive to said version such as Australian Ford cars and even HSV and various V8 Supercars, similar to what EA did with NFS3 on the PC, which the Australian version has exclusive HSV cars, HSV Adventure Racing, which was the Australian version of Beetle Adventure Racing on the N64, and even the Australian version of NFSHS, which also includes exclusive HSV cars.

I love GT2 for the challenge it gave out. Its not like now, where you can tune a car to max power and race it. In this game, you had to tune a car to a certain limit and race it that way. It made you think more about what cars were more suitable

I have original PAL version and the Subaru Rex name also appears in the game instruction manual, in the 'Credits/Manufacturers' section.

want to notice something? the 1.0 version when you want to wash a car, it costs around 5.000 Credits, which was supposed to be only in the Japanese credit format, but it was also released worldwide, until it came the 1.1 version, now instead of 5,000 credits, is now 50 credits to wash a car

How did you manage to get the Acura Integra with the "DC Sports" paint scheme? I remember playing that car a looonngg time ago when this game came out, at my dads buddies house. My pops use to be the supervisor for that company and they use to specialize in Hondas and Acuras lol.
Holy shit man. That brings back so many memories! Sometimes I just wish I was 10 again and playing this shit on my PS1. I still think this is the best Gran Turismo they ever made. Certainly got the best original music, that's for sure ;)

That's funny, I have the NTSC U/C version and I have the Silvias mentioned at 28:28 with the RX-7 titles. Is it a glitch or something, was my disc mislabled, or did I just get lucky?

One question, is there any footage of the Ford Escort 1,8 GTI? There are pictures of it in the Ford dealer menu of a pre-reliese Gran Turismo 2 Demo, but I've never seen the actual model.

The Arcade disc still had the NASCAR version of the Taurus SHO. I'm guessing since arcade mode wasn't affected by the bugs that prompted them to release updated copies, they didn't get around to changing it there.

From what I gather, none of those cars ever had Exxon livery in real life. Anyway, brilliantly put together and very entertaining video! Though watching it makes me sad that I'll never be able to drive around a piece of scenery on wheels in real life ;-(

30:14 you can drive that if you buy the Taurus in sim mode, put the racing mod on it and then load your "home garage" up in the arcade disk, instead of the regular racing skin it will be mark martins
the beautiful renault megane rally appears on the simulation disco as a racing modification.

Its fascinating.
Although you can't race modify the acura nsx type s and s zero, if you use gameshark on the ntsc and put a honda nsx type s in your garage you can race modify it.
Its literally the same car.
ESSO and Mobil are the main providers of EXXON in Continental Europe and the UK, respectively.
Overseas, in the USA, EXXON uses its own brand for its distribution network.

Arent the "arcade disk" rally cars just racing modded simulation cars? Cos I'm pretty sure I used to have the Pulsar, Delta, 323 and Evo III rally car.
Or do you consider these different from them because these actually have the 'rally car' or their name?
on the PAL version we have all the rally cars modifications on Disc 2 (GT Mode)
It's a Lotus Elise Convertible, and hah! I thought the same when seeing the label, the Mazda RX-7 Touring Kit A-Spec LM Edition became the default label, and was put on this car and many other cut cars that never got a label drawn.

Ever since I play GT2 I've always been looking for those rally cars that appeared in arcade, now I know what happened lol
Now that I have played this often some of the rally cars that aren't avalible can be obtained as racing modifications of the original car

specifically for US release 1.2. i cant find it anywhere.
All of those rally cars you said that only appeared on the arcade disc are all on the GT disc of the PAL version. I have nearly all of them. Also, a couple of the cars like the evo IV have the rally modifications as their racing mods which you can put on the car.
That is for only a couple of the cars. Others like the Daihatsu and the Pulsar rally car you can buy in-game from the dealership.
Yeah I thought so. I saw that part of the video and thought to myself "hang on, In the version of the game I have, I can get all those from the dealerships". But then again, for the NTSC version of the game, they may be exclusive cars on the arcade disk. Like you showed.
That racing Prius. When going past you, you would hear a "woooooooossssshhhhhh"
Well, I found out that if you add in a Lancia Stratos the racing modification you will see that the name will change and will be labeled "Lancia Stratos Rally Car" (in the car selecion from the garage) (I use NTSC version). Also, in the PAL version you can't add racing modifications in a MR-Spyder S-Edition unlike in the NTSC version
According to the car list on GameFAQs, lots of those rally cars were present in the Japanese edition

The very first two games have that option, in fact, GT5 revived that option after it was phased out in GT3 and GT4, and its spinoffs (Concept, Prologues and PSP)...
