The development of GT2 is insane. It reminds me a lot of San Andreas for the PS2, with how many things were changed/cut/rehashed into something else. You could tell the drive, the vision and the passion the devs had for GT2, and you could see they way over pushed the PS1 with all the plans they had. It’s like a gift that keeps on giving!
GT is always a ton of fun to look into. I haven't done anything myself but honestly I love hearing about what people find. Even in the later games, like the cut content in GT5 for example. Currently playing through GT2 as I've never played it before and it's a lot of fun and a nice change of pace from GT7.
Always was mystified by those PS1 era distant scenery renders when I was a kid. In GT2 it made me wish I could drive to them and exit my car and explore. Then GTA 3 came along on PS2 and I got to live my dreams😂
8 year olds in 1998: whoa i wonder what's back there if only i could break thru the barrier and explore for hours 8 year olds in 2023: yeah that's a flat skybox texture
Fun fact: Twisted Metal Harbor City was a PS2 game that was cancelled around its Alpha build because the execs said that, after GTA 3, a car game which you can't get out of the car and walk around would never sell.
He’s passing on movies to the next generation. It’s kind of sweet to see someone like Kojima look lost, like a kid in a candy store, smiling and excited, not serious and reading from a prompter. Really enjoyed listening to Kojima San talk about movies, just wish I understood Japanese so I didn’t have to read the subtitles.
Excellent video once again Matt. It is kinda crazy to think how unoptimized the license test tracks are. The amount of wasted disc space due to geometry that was never meant to be seen is definitely not a slight fact. Which once again makes me think about how this game would have turned out if they had a couple of weeks or months more to optimize.
Perhaps the "dart" in dart_test could possibly be a mispelling of dirt. Just my assumption since I managed to find a japanese game that has the dirt sound effect mispelled as dart.
Indeed Dirt in Japanese is read "Daato", which sounds the same as dart is it could pretty much be some translator mistaking ダート for Dart Instead of Dirt. Though according to the dictionary Dart is ダーツ (daatsu). Still it could be a mistake on the translation team.
the plum->plam->palm part later corroborates this. the fact that there's no dirt on the track disputes it. perhaps it was a typo of dark, and they were experimenting with time of day lighting.
True, as one of the demos had dirt_test 1, which is a basic, dirt track for rally testing, alongside dart_test 2, which is still in the final game. dart_test 2 was most likely meant to test Dirt Tire physics in Tarmac, but aside from the erroneous Rally Car with Dirt Tires in one of the Autumn Ring races, none of the Dirt Tracks have a Tarmac Section to showcase how Dirt Tires work differently compared to Road Tires on Tarmac. We wouldn't experience this until GT PSP, where the Tarmac section of Cathedral Rocks Trail 1 is more difficult to navigate through due to the poor grip of Dirt Tires, unlike GT4.
@@X2011racer What's interesting, in beta GT2, one "tahiti test" map was a beta Smokey Mountain North and those dirt test tracks were actually rally special stages which ended upabandoned and/or deleted
I always enjoyed looking at unused or cut content, or using GameSharks to explore past a locked door or past a demos end point. Even though I’m not. A racing fan this was still interesting asf
just gotta say, you are definitely towards the top of my "youtubers to watch at night in bed" list. your videos are just so chill and interesting, and it's always cool to learn new things about one of my favorite video game franchises
and speaking of license test with opponents, kind of interesting to see the concept already existed in GT2, albeit it took them another 11 years to finally implement it in GT5.
20:20 "Dart" here is probably an incorrect re-romanization of "dirt". You can equip "DART" tires in the Japan-only Ohlins Hyper Rally for PS1. Anyway, I feel dart_test2 could be a similar case to the unused Demo_UpDown dirt track from Gran Turismo Concept, where the shape of the road (Tsukuba) is intended for a different surface type (tarmac). Maybe only the road splines for this supposed "Dirt Test 2" track were done, and the surrounding details like generic rumble strips/grass/walls/background were just placeholders auto-added in some kinda track editor program Polyphony was using
Dart may have been a misspelling of kart, as in Go-Kart. It would make much more sense, because we have a Go-Kart track in GT2 arcade mode time trials, known as Motorsports land, which bears a striking resemblance to this one in terms of layout, it's not a complete 1:1, but if you'd put them side by side, you'd see the similarities, among which the one we have is ran in counter clockwise, unlike the secret track, which is ran clockwise
Fun fact: test course is the only one track which pit stop boxes are NEVER avaliable... For obvious reasons, especially because no one endurance race take place here...
Going out of bounds in racing games as a kid was the first time I ever felt fear and anxiety while playing games. Especially when the game gets frozen in that state and you need to reset the Xbox from falling through the subway tunnel in Midtown Madness 3.
My mind was blown when I heard that the Superfast Corners, one of my favorite license tests, is based off Spa Francorchamps. So I technically drove the most popular part of the track when I was a kid without realizing it! If only the track is in GT4 xD
That is a great video. You could also check out GT3 and GT4 Prologue test sections, if you want. There is some beta stuff, which was also seen in Store Demo 2. In GT4 Prologue you also have blocked "A-B stages" instead of modified beta tracks.
When looking at the secret track(the last one in this video), the first few turns look just like a miniature shortened version of Tsukuba Circuit, but maybe I’m reaching.
i have to ask a question, where are the previous rewards that were on the members subscriptions before (like the hybrid card save file), because i cant seem to see them on the rewards description anymore, are they available?
Interesting video! I’m curious about checker seeing how it’s complete I’m thinking if it would be possible to somehow remove the barriers and make it a time trial seeing how it would have no AI pathing
Hey Matt... I was playing GT3 the other day. And as I was doing the licenses I came across those two tests where you have to drive 2 or 3 laps in a circle. They are set at night time and the scenery looks a lot like SS5. So I was wondering... Do these "circuits" somehow connect to SS5? Has anyone ever looked into this?
Licenses are fun. Not into lap times. Yes license test tracks hmm. Cool cut offs for what players don't need to see/RAM. Good remixes. Fair demo detail. Unused textures/but layout there. Odd for the barriers tests as it's just textures differences then distance. Seems like wasted assets on the disk. Unless needed in the code/collision somewhere as a base or forgotten and left in. Ah yeah the drag mode. Yep Palm Strip is listed there. Yep naming and localisation. Interesting for assets, but amount of space used for each test and it's unused/un-playability states. Interesting track maps too. Fair comeback. Red Rock Valley skybox but the layout gives me GT/Motorsports land track vibes. I assume a lighting test around corners, maybe even for reflections. No clue.
I don't find them very fun. I didn't find a lot of them in 1, 2, and 4 to be particularly hard but I just wanted to get into some racing. And you can use the prize cars you get from them in those races saving you some money so you can get upgrades on them.
your videos would be so much more enjoyable to watch if you used a better, more modern emulator, this way they look outdated and just plain ugly lmao... just some tough love m8, some constructive cristisim ;)

judging by the track length and the corners, it looks more like a go-kart track, and "dart" is not too far away from kart.
