One of the reasons I love your channel over a lot of the other film reaction channels is that you think like a film maker. You talk about things like score, cinematography, and the fact that this should have been a series as opposed to a feature film. I've been making films since 2011, and I think you'd be an amazing film maker.
The brawl between Roddy Piper and Keith David is one of the most iconic fights on film. Such a blast. Also, this might amuse you, I once watched a cinema double feature of this and Prince of Darkness (another great Carpenter film) and not only were the attendees given bubblegum before the screening, the power to the cinema went out right after They Live finished. Given the ending, I half expected OBEY to appear on the screen.
I still hear this score in my head everyday. In retrospect it is obvious that Holly is involved. When you watch it a second time you're thinking, " How did I miss this."
They did have a alien invasion TV series. "V" was about an alien species of lizard people who disguised as humans take over the planet(Earth I guess ?)

Another great reaction Jen, the longest fist fight in film history is in a John Wayne film 'The Quiet Man' (not a Western). Other Sci-Fi films which you might like: "Westworld" 1974, "Short Circuit" 1986, "Innerspace" 1987, "The Andromeda Strain" 1971, "Capricorn One" 1977. Piper was in talks to play the same character in a tv series of 'They Live'. It was such a loss when he passed. He was a legend who will be sadly missed. Andrew
The alley fight is awesome just because it's awesome, but it's also essential to the theme of the movie. It's an illustration of why the aliens have been successful. Frank is a good guy, and yet here he is getting into a knock-down brawl over just putting on some sunglasses. He simply doesn't want to know - he has a wife and kid he wants to get back to and he knows, or feels, that once he sees what Roddy Piper wants him to see he won't be able to just go on as before. It's a literalisation of the effort people will put in to not seeing the horror of their own lives. (And sure enough, once he does put on the glasses, he's too much of a good guy to turn his back on it - then he's in it to the end.)
Lesser known John Carpenter films include Assault on Precinct 13, Christine, The Fog, Prince of Darkness and Vampires. Keith David also has prominent voice roles in Disney's Gargoyles and the Spawn animated series
So, Roddy Piper (somewhat famously) never took off his wedding ring no matter what he was playing in a movie. Also, the alley fight is (was for a long time?) the longest fist fight on film. There are tons of fun stories about filming it.
@@blechtic I think the record is for continuous fist fight with no cut away scenes. From first punch: "Any Which Way You Can" - 10m12s, "They Live" - 5m8s. I'll throw in another famous one, "The Quiet Man"- 8m9s. But "They Live" is the only one without cuts to other actors or scenes, even scenes outside where the fighting is taking place. I checked the times myself so it might be off a second or two from what sites read.
They Live is a Low Budget Masterpiece !!!!!!! The Ally Fight was one of the greatest and I love that it is being rediscovered . Roddy Piper was in a few movies but only one great one !!!!!!
"Does Thinking that You're the Last Sane Man on the Face of the Earth Make You Crazy?"😂(LOL) Wrong Movie, but still an Appropriate Quote for this one!👌Thanks Jen💝Your Reactions and Premieres are always the Best...👍
Great reaction to a classic, Jen. I think that the long fist-fight (which I believe is still the longest fist-fight scene in movie history) was meant to convey how difficult it is to convince someone to 'wake up' and realize enlightenment. So, there was some poetry and a deeper and more profound meaning behind that scene.
If you want a TV-show like this there there's 2 versions of the TV show "V", (probably the closest to "They Live") plus the earlier show "The Invaders" (1967), and "Dark Skies" (1996) which is a bit more historically "accurate". Personally I Like Dark Skies for the UFO conspiracy, but "V" and "The Invaders" both have aliens hiding as humans in society.
John Carpenter has some great movies and this is up there! Best line is "I have come here to kick ass and chew bubblegum and I'm all out of bubblegum!" Loved this when it came out and I will watch again and again! Time to watch Jen Murray cause I'm all out of bubblegum! Thanks for sharing Jen ❤️💛
Amazing film Sooo far ahead of its time and soooo many messages for soo many people that sleep and the methods the Overlords use on them in the society we live in especially in these last decades.
(Puts glasses on, watches Jen watch They Live - Sees only B&W "Champagne!" and "Stacks!") Great review Jen, weird but great little film with the late great Canadian Mr. Piper!
"Rowdy Roddy Piper" RIP, one of the best pro wrestlers of his time, from Canada, he was my favorite characters and wore a kilt in the ring, awsome! Thanks Jen.
4:17 - The Monolith Monsters (1957), a pretty good film that avoids most of the common tropes of 50s sci-fi movies. 19:14 - "Headbutts I never understood because wouldn't you hurt your own head almost as much?" - I've never headbutted anyone, but as I understand it, the correct way to give a headbutt is to lean forward so that it's mostly the top of your head that hits the other person, and try to hit them in the face. 29:00 - That's the Ghostbusters PK Energy Detector. Yes, it would have made a good TV show. And then it would have been canceled before reaching any kind of conclusion.
Reminds me of the 1967 TV series "The Invaders". Aliens disguised as humans replacing people in powerful positions. The one man who knows travelling the country every week, trying to expose them.
The white guy is Rowdy Roddy Piper a pro wrestler. The long ass fight scene was parodied by South Park when Jimmy and Timmy re-enacted the whole fight scene. It was hilarious. Cripplefight!
09:13 - Never underestimate the power of a good headbutt! The top of the forhead is the hardest part of the cranium, and is pretty effective against any noses! :P
Speaking of sci-fi movies that have a core concept that could be expanded into a TV series, you should consider checking out "Alien Nation" (1988) starring James Caan and Mandy Patinkin which did spawn a very good but short lived TV series.
"We all sell out every day, might as well be on the winning team." That line is so amazing but also so very true. A few times in the movie, you can hear Roddy Piper pronounce a few words with an accent. He was born in Saskatchewan but grew up in Manitoba, which is probably where the accent is from.
Your fight comments were seriously making me laugh! Wrap it up! X) You have the best quips :) Based on your reaction to this movie, I think you'd really like the V mini-series from 1983 (it's 4 hours long; second mini-series 1984, V: The Final Battle, 6 hours long). Sorry, no ridiculously long fight scenes in it, but other things happen to make you think what is real.
Fun trivia: So, in the Saints Row franchise, in part 4, the game is set in a virtual world, not unlike the Matrix. Keith David and Roddy Piper's fight scene was recreated in the game with a somewhat happier outcome. 😆
This a a Campy Classic and just Pure 80's. Also, Rowdy Roddy Piper was one of my favourite wrestlers when I was a kid so it's impossible for me to not love this movie. Cheers and Happy Hump Day, Y'all. 🥃☮❤ 26:37 It's really cool how Jen got Jane Bond to Guest-Host part of this Reaction. That's some Star-Power right there.🤩😍 28:59 HA! That's a P.K.E. Yeah, They live 1988 has the P.K.E Meter from Ghostbusters 1984 , but Ghostbusters 2 1989 has the lady at 30:29 (in this video) as the mom at the Kids Birthday party.
One of my all time favorite movies! Roddy Piper did such a great job with this character (in addition to being such a wonderful wrestler)! Hands down the longest fight in a movie I think I have ever seen. And Roddy's line about being there to chew bubble gum or.....somethign else...is classic!
Rowdy Roddy Piper was from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.(RIP) Keith David and Roddy Piper's fight scene is one of the most EPIC fights in movie history! This movie will make you think. Thanks for this one!
Only mentioning this as it seems relevant to the theme in this film. You may have heard of Adbusters Media Foundation, founded in Vancouver in the '80's. Adbusters blames advertising for playing a significant role in creating and maintaining consumer culture. The 80's was probably the most materialist, consumer focused decade so far! This film is almost a forgotten gem... great choice and as ever great commentary👏
The alley fight scene was so incredibly awesome because both actors were professional wrestlers. They truly put their heart and soul into that fight! I watched a biography about Roddy Piper and he talks about this film. Piper wrote a list of one liners for the film and gave it to John Carpenter. The bubblegum line was one that Roddy wrote.
It's funny watching you react to the part where police are attacking the homeless camp and you said "What are they gonna do? Arrest them? For what?" Right now, the Supreme Court is hearing a case about criminalizing being homeless. Makes you want to find some dark glasses...
The blond dude was Roderick George Toombs (April 17, 1954 - July 31, 2015), better known as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who was a Canadian professional wrestler and actor.
Great reaction to the sci-fi classic Jen... If you ever play 'Saints Row IV' there is a semi-sequel to this movie within that video game (there is even a mission called 'He Lives') & the music soundtrack is also reminiscent of the film. Both Rowdy 'Rowdy' Piper & Keith David lend their likenesses and voices to the game. The game developers were big fans of this film and other sci-fi films (like The Matrix, Armageddon, War Of The Worlds, Alien, etc). It is a lot of fun to play....
I think all of us were meant to assume Holly was a love interest and then be gobsmacked when she revealed herself to be evil. But it also makes for great reactions, when you're chanting "fall in love!" :D
Roddy Pipper was a professional wrestler with the WWF (WWE at that time) spoke on the fight scene. He told Keith. "You're wearing me out, stop pulling your punches. Just Hit me , I'm use to it" that fight scene held the longest unbroken fight scene ever filmed. I'm not 100% sure but it might still.
@@clarencewalker3925 re read what I said. I didn't say most violent. I said longest single shot most fight scenes are shot at close up of hand/feet the close up of actors faces /bodies then actors throwing/ blocking punches and kicks. Then it's spliced together. This was at the time the longest single take fight
I love this movie. I’m glad you enjoyed it. That fight between him and his friend is so long and hilarious because of how it just kept going and going lol
The alley fight was soo long because it represents the process of waking someone up. Also the number on the dumpster truck (295) is significant The numerology energy represented by the number 295 resonates with the idea of wisdom, intuition, and curiosity. It is a diplomatic energy, tending to fade into the background until action is warranted. When a person lives with number 295 energy, they are likely to be focused on learning about themself. There is also likely to be a sense of connection to ancient inner wisdom. Relationships are apt to be deemed important. There tends to be curiosity about life and an appreciation of adventure. Tolerance and compassion resonate within the energy the person lives with. 295 energy has a resonance of idealism in the sense that it concludes the best way for life to work and focuses on that. The energy represented by 295 also resonates with humanitarianism and tolerance. And expression of a personal sense of FREEDOM....
14:10 I just imagine how freaky this scene would look to anyone not in the know. I can hear the bystander's police report now: "It was terrible! This guy nurst into the bank with a shotgun, yelled something aboùt bubblegum, and started blowing people away!"

Thanks! People have sent me some cool stuff, I love when something comes up in a movie I have a prop for! :)
Jen seriously needs to do Christine. That was a heck of a movie!
So, Roddy Piper (somewhat famously) never took off his wedding ring no matter what he was playing in a movie.
Also, the alley fight is (was for a long time?) the longest fist fight on film. There are tons of fun stories about filming it.
He’s a wrestler. Costuming is important! (his ring he never took off)
How does that Clint Eastwood film compare?
@@blechtic I think the record is for continuous fist fight with no cut away scenes. From first punch: "Any Which Way You Can" - 10m12s, "They Live" - 5m8s. I'll throw in another famous one, "The Quiet Man"- 8m9s. But "They Live" is the only one without cuts to other actors or scenes, even scenes outside where the fighting is taking place. I checked the times myself so it might be off a second or two from what sites read.
@@joelwillems4081 "Any Which Way You Can". Would love to see a reaction to that one. Personally I thought it was much funnier than "Every Which Way".
I recommend checking out Zizek's interpretation of the movie and why the fight was so long.
Hey Jen, they DID make a reality series based on this film - it's called LIFE. 😎
Has she seen Buckaroo Banzai?
If not she should!
You should see the 3 hour extended cut alley fight. 😅
Brought my bubblegum.
14:05 One of my favorite movie lines. In fact, it was hearing this this line in the first trailer I saw that make "They Live" a must see for me.
Amazing film Sooo far ahead of its time and soooo many messages for soo many people that sleep and the methods the Overlords use on them in the society we live in especially in these last decades.
I’m super happy to see Jen so loved “The Last Starfighter” recently that she shouted “Victory or Death” in this reaction! 😁
_"Victory or death!"_ - Jen still defending the frontier against Xur and the Kodan armada...
(Puts glasses on, watches Jen watch They Live - Sees only B&W "Champagne!" and "Stacks!") Great review Jen, weird but great little film with the late great Canadian Mr. Piper!
Sqweee!! I LOVE this movie. I’m SO here for this! ❤❤❤
In the original short story the aliens are called the Fascinators
They Live, The Thing, and Prince of Darkness are the Carpenter trifecta!
"Rowdy Roddy Piper" RIP, one of the best pro wrestlers of his time, from Canada, he was my favorite characters and wore a kilt in the ring, awsome! Thanks Jen.
Did anyone notice the ghost finder from Ghostbusters the guards were using to search for them.
Great movie with a message that is even more relevant in 2024 than when it was made. It's time to wake up!
I want a pair of those sunglasses 🕶 Thanks Jen great reaction 😊
Wild movie, and a fun chat as always, Jen. And now I have plans for tomorrow! See ya then!
Reminds me of the 1967 TV series "The Invaders". Aliens disguised as humans replacing people in powerful positions. The one man who knows travelling the country every week, trying to expose them.
Based on @ Mauro Biglino & The 5Th Kind channels.
"It's not an 80's movie without boobs."
Amen to that.
"She's just going to mae a liquor drink" *takes sip*. I see you.
Sleep
The white guy is Rowdy Roddy Piper a pro wrestler. The long ass fight scene was parodied by South Park when Jimmy and Timmy re-enacted the whole fight scene. It was hilarious. Cripplefight!
09:13 - Never underestimate the power of a good headbutt! The top of the forhead is the hardest part of the cranium, and is pretty effective against any noses! :P
Meg Foster played Evil-Lyn in the movie Masters of the Universe with Dolph Lundgren as He-man.
Wrap it up! X) You have the best quips :)
Based on your reaction to this movie, I think you'd really like the V mini-series from 1983 (it's 4 hours long; second mini-series 1984, V: The Final Battle, 6 hours long).
26:37 It's really cool how Jen got Jane Bond to Guest-Host part of this Reaction. That's some Star-Power right there.🤩😍
28:59 HA! That's a P.K.E. Meter from Ghostbusters! Never noticed that before.
Also just noticed the Meter. :)
Yeah, They live 1988 has the P.K.E Meter from Ghostbusters 1984 , but Ghostbusters 2 1989 has the lady at 30:29 (in this video) as the mom at the Kids Birthday party.
Jen, quietly and calmly puts on the bowtie to be incognito.
This is why we love your stuff lol
One of my all time favorite movies! Roddy Piper did such a great job with this character (in addition to being such a wonderful wrestler)! Hands down the longest fight in a movie I think I have ever seen. And Roddy's line about being there to chew bubble gum or.....somethign else...is classic!
Now Jen is ready to watch Cripple Fight.
Southpark, season 5, episode 2.
She may have already when she watched about 10 of the shows.
This is the best fist fight in any movie, ever. I believe they asked John Carpenter how he wanted them to fight. JC said .....just fight.
Rowdy Roddy Piper was from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.(RIP)
Keith David and Roddy Piper's fight scene is one of the most EPIC fights in movie history!
This movie will make you think.
Thanks for this one!
Jen, your excellent choice of movies never gets tiring.
"They Live" is a great cult classic.
Dudes will watch the alley fight and just be like 'hell yeah'.
Who'd have guessed that Rowdy Roddy Piper could act as well as fight?
Wrestling IS acting. 😉
Just when you think you have all the answers, he changes the questions!
Rowdy Randy (the blond) was a professional wrestler. This is a great John Carpenter movie.
🤦🏻♂️ "Rowdy" RODDY Piper
@@SonOfMuta Yes, better known as Roddy Piper, birthname Roderick George Toombs.
21:18 - "Idiots"
It's funny watching you react to the part where police are attacking the homeless camp and you said "What are they gonna do? Arrest them? For what?"
Right now, the Supreme Court is hearing a case about criminalizing being homeless.
Makes you want to find some dark glasses...
The blond dude was Roderick George Toombs (April 17, 1954 - July 31, 2015), better known as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, who was a Canadian professional wrestler and actor.
"Do they have to just fight it out now?"
Oh girl, you just wait. 🕶
@26:14 The walkie-talkies are P.K.E. Meters from the Ghostbusters movie.
Was just going to point that out 😊
30:29 The lady is the mom at the kids birthday party in Ghostbusters II.
@@lmcgregoruk and Kathleen Turner's sister from Romancing the Stone (1984).
We’re glad you got to witness an amazing documentary. The director even said so
I think all of us were meant to assume Holly was a love interest and then be gobsmacked when she revealed herself to be evil. But it also makes for great reactions, when you're chanting "fall in love!" :D
I still wonder how she found the meeting location.
"Darker Than Amber" still has the most violent fight scene in filmdom because the actors actually fought each other. They gave the censors headaches.
You switched them around, WWF at the time, then became WWE, due to a legal dispute with the World Wildlife Fund.
@@JakkFrost1 yeah I n saw that this morning. Oh well
@@clarencewalker3925 re read what I said. I didn't say most violent. I said longest single shot most fight scenes are shot at close up of hand/feet the close up of actors faces /bodies then actors throwing/ blocking punches and kicks. Then it's spliced together. This was at the time the longest single take fight
That fight scene just keeps going it’s so great
I love this movie. I’m glad you enjoyed it. That fight between him and his friend is so long and hilarious because of how it just kept going and going lol
The alley fight was soo long because it represents the process of waking someone up.
Also the number on the dumpster truck (295) is significant
The numerology energy represented by the number 295 resonates with the idea of wisdom, intuition, and curiosity.
Great reaction Jen, hope you're having a great day, cheers.
"We all sell out every day, might as well be on the winning team." Honestly, facts.
14:10 I just imagine how freaky this scene would look to anyone not in the know. I can hear the bystander's police report now:
"It was terrible! This guy nurst into the bank with a shotgun, yelled something aboùt bubblegum, and started blowing people away!"
"What's wrong, baby?!" Best ending. 😀
