      Actually, ILM only did the chest burster alien. The VFX were done by Apogee. A company started by John Dykstra, who was the VFX Sup. on the original Star Wars. However, George Lucas' company did the Sound Effects and Sound Mixing. The group used to be called Sprockets, before they moved and renamed it Skywalker Sound. This was Gary Rydstrom and Randy Thom's first job as Sound Designers.

First, Lonestar couldn't look like Han Solo (so Mel dressed him like Indiana Jones instead) and second there could be no Spaceballs merchandise. Lucas didn't want it mistaken for Star Wars merchandise. Mel Brooks agreed and decided it would be a fun gag to make tons of fake merchandise to use in the film even if it would never be real. And the whole thing was made all the funnier as a result.

    You may find it hard to believe but Mel Brooks had one of the most dangerous jobs of any soldier in WW2. He was a combat engineer given the task of removing land mines placed by the Nazis. This had a great influence on his future career, which was to make people laugh. He saw so much hatred in the world (Nazi camps) that he felt that the best way to fight hatred was with laughter. I just wish Mel had been right. Seems like hatred for others is still around.

    I don't know the full bts just snippets, but I believe one of the first jokes Mel Brooks thought of was the headphone gag. And when he contacted George Lucas, George had two main request that Mel decided to parody in response to.
    Mel Brooks was not allowed to make or advertise any sort of products for the movie, so Mel decided to make an advertise products for the movie only within the movie.
    The main character Lone Star was not allowed to be dressed like Han Solo. So Lone Star is dressed like Indiana Jones, a different Harrison Ford character.
    The scene where Dark Helmet role plays with the dolls was entirely improv'd by Rick Moranis

    18:37 Okay, there's actually some fun background here. George Lukas *loved* the script as he was given a copy before the movie was finished so he could okay it. The merchandising company for Star Wars on the other hand, played hardball. Space Balls was not allowed to sell *any merchandise* for like 20 years or something like that. Which is why they had the merchandise scene and...well the company that handled merchandise for Star Wars was The *Schwarz* company.

    The original Star Wars showed everyone why merchandising was so profitable. The reason George Lucas is so rich largely because he negotiated a percentage of Star Wars merchandising profits for himself from the very first movie. Nobody thought it would be that much, but he made a fortune. So by the time Spaceballs was written, movie merchandising was pretty well established.

    • @toddjones1480
      @toddjones1480 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lucas didn't negotiate for what percentage he would get. He just asked for the rights, period. The negotiations over percentages happened later, with the licensees.
      And decades later he would pioneer new depths of screwing movie theater owners on their percentage of ticket sales.

    The money people at the set did not want to pay Lucas a decent salary for Star Wars. They thought it was going to be a B- movie, at best. They gave Lucas the merchandising rights as they saw no monetization of the franchise. Lucas quickly became one of the wealthiest, in hollywood due to producers not wanting to fairly pay him. Brooks played off of that in this movie.

    Thanks for reacting to this movie, friends! It's hopelessly silly and obvious most of this time, but it's one of my favourites from my childhood.
    Your confusion over the "Pluto" joke is understandable if you don't remember the classic Disney characters. Pluto is also the name of Mickey Mouse's dog. That's why the punchline is, "From the bark."
    Also re: merchadising. One of Lucas' conditions for allowing this parody to be made, and for granting the use of the ILM studio, was that Brooks couldn't sell any merchandise based on "Spaceballs" -- he didn't want any confusion between "Spaceballs" and "Star Wars" toys. So to poke a bit of extra fun at Lucas, the movie was filled with fake merchandise instead.

    This was a fun watch. A lot of reason you don’t see a lot of parody films recently is more that many movie franchises will self-parody. Comedy is interested in nearly all of them. Deadpool movies are often a parody of super hero movies. You also have satire. You don’t see many comedy satires, but we do have dark satire. Such as The Boys is a dark satire of the popular super hero genre. Jordan Peele does horror cultural-satire.

    3:54 Achara: "The princess is so pretty!" The first time I saw Daphne Zuniga was in "The Dorm That Dripped Blood" (which IMDB lists as her first movie role) in 1982, and I thought "She's so pretty." Then she fainted when she discovered the bodies of her murdered parents in their car, and the killer dragged her unconscious into the driveway and backed the car up over her head. Toward the end of the movie, the killer displayed the bodies of his victims including Daphne's character with her crushed head and explained "She may be a little hard to recognize." It wasn't the best 80's B-grade mass murderer horror movie, but it really wasn't bed either.
