Arnold had to do a lot of his own stunts (though the swinging in the Mall scene is clearly not him) because it was difficult to find a stunt performer who was his size, so when someone else is doing a stunt for him, it's very obvious.
A lot of people didn't like it but one of my personal fav Arnie movies was Last Action Hero, it is kinda a parody of action movies. Also his Conan and Red Sonja movies are worth a watch if you like some cheesy fantasy movies.
"Is this the most 80s movie that ever 80s?" Speaking as an official member of the *Gen-X Council* , I can say that it's definitely one of the most 80s movies to ever 80s. It really kicked Arnold's career into high gear and paved the way for every action movie he did after it. All of them are among the most 80s movies to 80s. After you've watched a bunch of other Arnold movies -- and _only_ after watching them -- try _The Last Action Hero_ . Once you've seen all the 80s movies that ever 80s, you'll get full enjoyment from _The Last Action Hero_ .
an "older millennial" myself, I always considered this to be the quintessential Arnold action movie, Conan, Terminator, and Predator are more *iconic* but one of those is fantasy and the other two are sci-fi, Commando is just straight-up action (excepting the many feats of low-key superhuman strength that our hero performs).
As a fellow Official Member of the Gen-X Council, I concur, and do declare that this is the Most 80s an Action Movie has ever been, allowing a possible exception for "Invasion U.S.A." with Chuck Norris.
There is one other movie that might out 80's this. It's not an action movie, well not exactly. "Into the Night", Jeff Goldblum & Michelle Pfeiffer. A little bit odd, but man what an '80's movie.
Excellent recommendation, Last Action Hero. Charles Dance and even a small part for Ian McKellen. Great soundtrack as well with ACDC, Megadeth, Alice in Chains, Def Leppard, Aerosmith (and many more). I have it on both cassette and CD. As a fellower GenX myself (born in 1973), I agree, and you seem to have excellent taste, my friend.
From my impression, Sully yelled out, "You la-lied!" on his way down. Remember, Matrix promised to kill him last and he lied. Screaming to his death obscured his line.
“Don’t disturb my friend, he’s dead tired.” gotta love Arnie and his one liners. This movie is classic 80s action at its finest, you can’t ask for anything better.
The theatrical trailer reused Horner’s music from 48 Hrs where Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy tail David Patrick Kelly (Luther/Sully) from the parking garage to the BART subway.

And Val Verde is the fictional country in which Predator is set. Though it's never mentioned in the movie, so it could easily have just been shoehorned in after the fact. Never believe "making of" stories.
"I've never heard a score like this!" James Horner uses a lot of steel drum in the 48 Hours score also. It has Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte, so you're sure to enjoy 👍
James Horner has like 3 or 4 signature styles I've noticed. There's heavy action like 'Star Trek II' and 'Aliens', steel drum/sax music from this, '48 Hours' and 'Red Heat', the fantasy/adventure style of 'Willow', 'Krull' and 'Mask of Zorro' and the epic, serious stuff like 'Apollo 13' and 'Braveheart'. But you do see certain cues switch across these genres sometimes.

@@44excaliburThe weight isn't the issue. Arnie is perfectly capable of lifting Kelly's weight. What he can't do is hold it out from his center of balance. To stay upright, he'd have to lean so far back that Kelly's face would be resting on his shins.
Oh my God, I love this movie so much. I almost have it memorized line for line because there are so many one liners in it. And Bennett is awesome! Thank you so much for watching this.
Hi, Jen! I can't watch an Arnold movie without recalling the hilarious Simpsons "McBain" parodies. In one, McBain bursts out of an ice sculpture and quips, "Ice to see you," before gunning everyone down.
😄 I saw this when it first came out back in 1985. When she asked him where Sully was and he answered, "I Let Him Go," Just about everybody in the entire theater yelled out a collective "Ba-Da-Boom!" 😜 I highly recommend watching "Red Heat" (1988), for the sheer weirdness of listening to a guy with a thick Austrian accent attempting to approximate a Russian one. 🥸👍
Nah, they still exist. You just aren't cool enough to know about them. You have to be ex Green Force SEAL Beret Team Recon to get told which shops have them and which don't. Steven Seagal for example, has the whole network in his mind...
Arguably Arnold's finest hour outside the first 2 Terminator films. Showcases his skills for action & comedy with so many great action sequences and puns galore ("You're a funny guy, Sully - I like you ....that's why I'm going to kill you last..." Yep you've seen Bill Duke - the bald black bad guy - who was in PREDATOR as one of Arnie's team & Dan Hedaya as the villain (best known for being the dad in CLUELESS and the villain in the Coen Bros'. first hit BLOOD SIMPLE) and yep that was Bill Paxton. I knew you'd love this :D
They filmed the final scenes in my hometown. We went to watch when they burned the village down. It’s now called William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach.
Great reaction, Jen, I really like this Arnie film. Others of his which I recommend are: 'Red Heat', 'Twins', 'Conan The Barbarian', 'Conan The Destroyer', 'Raw Deal', 'End of Days' (A good one for Halloween). There are plenty of others but these are good ones to continue with.
Hi Adam 👋 I think Jen did Total Recall. And kindergarten Cop also. If you have not seen those, I do recommend them. Your driving today, was it to audition?

When I was a kid, my family used to go up north to my grandparents cottage that was built on a sand dune that was a stones throw away from Lake Michigan, and my grandpa had some VHS tapes, and we would always watch Commando, Romancing the Stone, Beverly Hills Cop, Crocodile Dundee, Ernest Goes to Camp, and various Clint Eastwood Westerns... So watching this reaction brought back so many fond memories! 😊
Greetings from Sweden. Seen this countless times since I was a kid. Never gets old. This film is what we like to call "mindless fun". 80´s movies just can´t be replicated. Fun fact: There was a Commando 2 in the making. It made a bit of sidestep and became a thing of its own. That movie was Die Hard and made Bruce Willis an actionstar.
"Bennet got a Super Mario Mushroom power-up from that electric shock". I saw this comment once and I laughed, real much. Bennet does go wild(er) after the electric shock and seems to have double the energy / power. Thank you Jen for another, as always, great reaction 🙂
Eraser is another Schwarzenegger classic. Then there's "Twins" with Danny Devito. "Red Sonya" & The Konan movies, the sequel Konan The Destroyer is a bit cheesy, but The Barbarian (the first one) you might enjoy 😊😅
He is the Incredible Hulk in this movie. You know how all action movies build off eachother? He is better than the terminator! He jumped out of a plane, I believe they go like 200 mph for takeoff. He lands in water and is fine. Rips a car seat out. Those are bolted in. Lifts a grown man inside a phone booth and tosses it. Took on like 6 or 8 men at once and threw them all off hulk style. When he held Sully over a cliff with ONE ARM! they had to use A CRANE because the weight is out of balance- no one can do that. He breaks a padlock off a chain with his bare hand… the force it would take to impale someone on a table leg like that would have to be tremendous.
True story. He almost did get casted for The Incredible Hulk TV series. Arnold and Lou Ferrigno were good friends in the bodybuilding game. Arnold did the audition. But his body was deemed too large to play the part.
That’s awesome 😎 but no one could do any of this stuff in real life! Nonetheless it’s one of my favorite action movies of all time. It’s the ultimate toxic male-fantasy. He kills about 50 men who really didn’t do anything to Arnie (right?) to save his daughter/ with his shirt off at the end, MUSCLES THROBBING! 😍 I forgot one thing. He was shot in the arm at the end and got NO MEDICAL ATTENTION! It’s the best 😅
There is no sequel. Not sure if one was planned but even so, after Conan the Destroyer was ridiculed, Arnold refused to do sequels. It really affected him. That is why he was not in Predator 2. James Cameron changed his mind for T2 however.
With him repeating his "I'll be back" line, along with all the delicious corny one-liners, this movie cemented the tradition of having Arnie lay down epic puns in every movie he's in.
He almost had that line removed from "The Terminator". As he was reading his script, he complained to James Cameron telling him that wasn't proper English He wanted to say "I will be back". James ended up telling him to stick to acting and to not tell him how to do his job. "You do you job and don't tell me how to do mine!" We might have not known that line had James backed down and changed to script.
I love watching ladies watching these crazy 80s action movies. Somewhere in the action, most ladies say all say, "They're messing up a nice house". I love your commentary, Miss Jen. You make the movies even better and more fun. I fell out of my seat when you mentioned, "It's not an 80s movie without boobs". Thanks for all the joy you bring every time, and all your hard work (your team too).
The fictional country of Valverde is also the same place as the jungle in Predator and the main villain from Die Hard 2 was from Valverde. There was a Commando 2 but Arnold was bored with the script and quit. It was about Matrix saving his daughter from terrorists being held in a skyscraper. When Arnie quit they changed the name to John McClane and the daughter to his wife and it was renamed Die Hard.
Good Afternoon Jen💝and Thank You for finally watching the Movie that made 'Arnie' into the Ultimate-Action Hero that We All Know-&-Love Him as today!👍Alyssa Milano is only 10 years older than Me🥰and I've been Crushing on Her ever since I was 3!
Classic 80s Arnie style movie! It never gets old for me all the one liners, action and man himself. I can't think of anyone more fitting for the John Matrix role. Thanks Jen!
My favorite classic 80s action movie, it's so over the top, especially on the island. It's like a video game. Vernon Wells plays such a memorable crazy villain.
OMG you did Commando !!!!! My cousin handed down his Commando poster to me in the early 90’s . I have cherished it like the mona Lisa ever since. One of my favourite Arnold’s of all time.
Classic action mayhem. The car chase with the Porsche, when he puts the car back on its wheels there is no damage even though it was scrapped and dented before.
Some fun facts: -there is a deleted scene where Arnold and Rae Dawn Chung (the girl sidekick) get together in a love scene, but the director felt it didn't fit the characters or felt out of place so cut it out. It does explain how "closer" they seem during the final act of the movie. -there are 2 versions, and it seems you were watching the directors cut, but the quote where Jenny goes "not as much fun as watching him smash your face in" was originally filmed as "not as much fun as watching him kick your ass." The bluray release has the "ass" line. Personally, I like the "smash your face in" a bit better. -Bennet wasnt wearing real chain mail, it was actually all made out of yarn. Look closer and you can tell it's just a yarn vest, created because his original outfit was too small for him. -the final fight with Bennet has been regarded as one of the best fights in action film history by many critics. -there is a hysterical video called Commando: the Musical which i would definitely recommend. Btw, I love this channel and your movie tastes are just awesome. You're definitely becoming my preferred movie reaction channel.
The cotton yarn to make chain mail is actually pretty common. A lot of extras in medieval/fantasy movies who look like they are wearing chainmail are just wearing the equivalent of a sweater colored to look like chainmail.
This is indeed the most 80s movie. Perfect in every way. Steel drums, totally in love with Arnold's physique, great unhinged villain, and just insane action throughout. One liners thrown around like poker chips. In MAD magazine at the time (or maybe Cracked), they spoofed the movie and the end he gets to his daughter's room and found out she totally saved herself and she didn't need him!
This is really the movie that cemented Arnie as an action hero. I never tire of this movie. You said it best, this movie knows exactly what it is and really set up Arnold's style going forward.
When this movie came out I was working at a one screen movie theater in Edmonton. I was about 17 , my manager was (I think) Korean, and neither one of us knew how to spell Arnie's last name. So there I was, one chilly October, 10 o'clock at night, up on a ladder trying to spell that name up on the marquee and get it centered. Then the Oiler's game ended up the street and all that traffic starts driving by. OTOH, I have no idea how many times I saw this movie (free shows being the biggest perk).
I am blown away but the level of 80'S cheese here ! 😆 This was meant as Arnold's way to one -up RAMBO 2 and i think he succeeds well , the movie obviously knows what it is just meant to be a great popcorn action flick . Alyssa Milano does a great job as the daughter , Rae Dawn Chong goes from being baffled by all this to being a strong supporting character . And Vernon Wells [Aussie Freddie Merury 😆] is suitably over the top as Bennett i needed to get pumped up with 80 action cheese today !! 💪 CHEERS FOR THIS JEN !! 💯
Fun movie that never tries to be to serious, just great story and action. The lady that helps him is the daughter of Chong from Cheech and Chong. She made a few other movies but this one is probably the one most people remember her in. Great reaction Jen, it is so cool how much you get into these movies.
Fun facts: the stewardess is the actress who played Teela in the "masters of the universe" movie. -Sully is best known for his role as the coked out guy with the 3 beer bottles on his fingers, in "the Warriors". -Rae Dawn Chong is the daughter of Tommy Chong!
That one radar tech was indeed Bill Paxton. Arnie's daughter Jenny was played by Alyssa Milano, who had just started her breakout role on the TV show "Who's The Boss?"

Thank you so much for watching this.
Hi, Jen! I can't watch an Arnold movie without recalling the hilarious Simpsons "McBain" parodies. In one, McBain bursts out of an ice sculpture and quips, "Ice to see you," before gunning everyone down.
@kevinlewallen4778 ,, Did`nt Arnie use that one as Mr. Freeze in "Batman & Robin" 1997 he used every other Ice pun they could think up at the time ...
@@brianjones7907 Don't know, wouldn't be surprised.
Simpsons movie was hilarious. "I was elected to lead, not to read"😂😂
McBain is awesome.
"Up and at them"
@@Lone-wolf-1982Yes! Rainier Wolfcastle playing Radioactive Man!
Commando pulled in $57.5 million on a roughly 10 million dollar budget.
In the 80's? Wow!
Hi Jen. Commando is awesome. Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thanks John you too! Loved Commando :)
Ah, the 80s- when every army surplus store had a secret back room full of rocket launchers and machineguns...
And a tank or two parked in back.
Jen, you were right. The radar guy was Bill Paxton in an early role.
Vernon Wells is so good here, such a great villain. He still looks dangerous until the end, even after that little soldiers genocide by Arnie.
That auto-repair Porsche is the best
The self-repair is like anti-rust undercoating. You get irritated about paying for it, but boy does it come in handy...
They filmed the final scenes in my hometown. We went to watch when they burned the village down. It’s now called William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach.
Great reaction, Jen, I really like this Arnie film.
Others of his which I recommend are:
'Red Heat',
'Twins',
'Conan The Barbarian',
'Conan The Destroyer',
'Raw Deal',
'End of Days' (A good one for Halloween).
There are plenty of others but these are good ones to continue with.
Hi Adam 👋 I think Jen did Total Recall. And kindergarten Cop also. If you have not seen those, I do recommend them. Your driving today, was it to audition?
@@e.d.2096 I was travelling back after staying overnight following a film premiere which I was at, Eric.
Thanks for the 'heads up' on the Arnie films that Jen has reacted to, I can't remember them, but I've more than likely watched her reaction to them, but I'll check to be sure, thank you.
How are things going with you, Eric?
@@e.d.2096Thanks, Eric, after checking, you were right, well remembered. I've removed those two and included two others instead.
@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. Everything fine on my end Adam. Its got to be very late or very early where you are. I won't keep you with chit-chat. See you soon 😊
@@e.d.2096 Okay, Eric, thank you, I am very tired so, I'll catch up with you next time, my friend.
Vernon Wells absolutely made this movie for me. His epic, eye-popping, scenery-chewing turn as Bennett is a non stop joy from start to finish.
A gem in Mad Max too
When I was a kid, my family used to go up north to my grandparents cottage that was built on a sand dune that was a stones throw away from Lake Michigan, and my grandpa had some VHS tapes, and we would always watch Commando, Romancing the Stone, Beverly Hills Cop, Crocodile Dundee, Ernest Goes to Camp, and various Clint Eastwood Westerns... So watching this reaction brought back so many fond memories! 😊
Jackie Chan is the OG self stunting actor after Buster Keaton
A staple of my childhood. The kind of film that we would spend the entire next day at school talking about.
19:19 "I want the big one!" That's what she said. Couldnt help myself. Lol
Jennifer, his daughter, is played by Alyssa Milano who was one of the stars in the TV show “Who’s the Boss”.
And was one of the main actress in „charmed“
@@thaxxilsylia956 And the film "Embrace of the Vampire"
17:10 Nice!
Also, that's Mac, from Predator!
I kept waiting, but you didn't recognize him.
Eraser is another Schwarzenegger classic. Then there's "Twins" with Danny Devito. "Red Sonya" & The Konan movies, the sequel Konan The Destroyer is a bit cheesy, but The Barbarian (the first one) you might enjoy 😊😅
First time Ive seen Conan spelt with a 'K!'
14:30 "...And then he explodes..." Got a good laugh out of that one! :)
0:22 "We separate our recyclables in this neighborhood!"
There is no sequel. Not sure if one was planned but even so, after Conan the Destroyer was ridiculed, Arnold refused to do sequels. It really affected him. That is why he was not in Predator 2. James Cameron changed his mind for T2 however.
The original sequel was supposed to be a movie called Die Hard. Then they swapped Matrix to McLean.
“Got him in the muscle” 😂 love it
19:35 _"Freeze!_ Don't even _think_ about it!"
_"Augh!_ I _thought_ about it! _Sorry!"_
Thanks for all the joy you bring every time, and all your
hard work (your team too).
Glad i got here, a bit late, enough to watch the good parts! I HAVE to find this somewhere and watch it with your full reaction vid. 😊❤
I think all the dogs' ears in the neighbourhood went up when she said "just in a speedo!" in such a high voice.
My favourite Arnie film.
CHENNNY!
The one-liners, the hammy villains, the puns, the soundtrack. Commando rules.
Jen, do you remember when I said I would watch your reaction last? I LIED.
"Don't disturb my friend, he's dead tired."
Almost as good a line as in Thunderball. "Mind if my friend sits this one out? She's just dead."
Hey Jen, your bird signal was priceless. Love it. Macaw Macaw
Fun fact,in an early draft of the script for what would become Die Hard,it was originally meant to be a sequel to Commando.
The steel drums are awesome. What a great idea to have it throughout
James Horner used almost this exact scoring for 48hrs (1982).
Also the actor who played Sully was in that movie as well .
Seeing this movie in theater when it first came out ... well, it was completely absurd and totally freakin' awesome!
Arnie physics: can rip through, lift, tear, and survive pretty much anything.
*Arnie on speedos* Jen: "Dude is just ripped" The look on Jen's face is priceless hahaha
Second time watching. Who doesn't love Arnie? And I love that crazy Cannuck!
Classic action mayhem. The car chase with the Porsche, when he puts the car back on its wheels there is no damage even though it was scrapped and dented before.
Christine's German cousin.
Some fun facts:
-there is a deleted scene where Arnold and Rae Dawn Chung (the girl sidekick) get together in a love scene, but the director felt it didn't fit the characters or felt out of place so cut it out.
The pun for the guy that got impaled is, "His heart's not in the right place..."
I love how excited Jen gets every time something explodes in a movie. Haha
PEAK Arnie! So many great memories of me and my buddies playing this when we were young 😄👌
This was a GREAT movie, and I loved the score, too. Your reactions are soo cool! Thanks!
This is really the movie that cemented Arnie as an action hero. I never tire of this movie. You said it best, this movie knows exactly what it is and really set up Arnold's style going forward.
Amazing body count, great one liners, utterly hilarious and a great reaction too! Who doesn't love commando?
When this movie came out I was working at a one screen movie theater in Edmonton. I was about 17 , my manager was (I think) Korean, and neither one of us knew how to spell Arnie's last name. So there I was, one chilly October, 10 o'clock at night, up on a ladder trying to spell that name up on the marquee and get it centered. Then the Oiler's game ended up the street and all that traffic starts driving by. OTOH, I have no idea how many times I saw this movie (free shows being the biggest perk).
I am blown away but the level of 80'S cheese here ! 😆
This was meant as Arnold's way to one -up RAMBO 2 and i think he succeeds well , the movie obviously knows what it is just meant to be a great popcorn action flick .
Alyssa Milano does a great job as the daughter , Rae Dawn Chong goes from being baffled by all this to being a strong supporting character .
And Vernon Wells [Aussie Freddie Merury 😆] is suitably over the top as Bennett
i needed to get pumped up with 80 action cheese today !! 💪
CHEERS FOR THIS JEN !! 💯
0.26. That guy is also another movie I really like. "BIRD ON A WIRE" STARRING MEL GIBSON ✨️👏
I think you made a really good stab at an impaling pun Jen!! You went straight to the point! 😋
👏😂
I think 48 hours. Has the steel drum as well similar sounding film and sully was in both
Sally's the clean-up chief in John Wick. He always took having a weak arm seriously, and trained the boys to maximum proficiency.

lol wisdom nuggets have been replaced with "i'mma have to build that in the Sims"
What time!?...
Arnold should've taken on that army wearing just the speedo. 🤣
We got speedos our first day in the Marines, naturally.
