Tom Cruise as Les Grossman is BRILLIANT. When he agreed to do the role, he told Ben Stller, "I want fat hands, and I want to dance."
The character was also based on Scott Rudin and Harvey Weinstein, both of whom are horrible people that treated there staffs like garbage but were extremely successful producers in Hollywood.
It was so out of character and Tom Cruise did a great job on the role.
IIRC, the whole character and that producer storyline was Tom Cruise's idea. Ben Stiller was reluctant at first to add that to the movie, but then later he realized how great it would be.
@@biglc034what? Harvey Weinstein is a horrible person? Didn't think anyone ever knew that.
But Les Groosman was based on Stuart Cornfeld. Confeld waa a movie producer and was a business partner with Ben Stiller in their company Red Hour Productions.
Gonna be real. I didnt recognize it was Tom Cuise until the credits either..
Apparently, the panda scene was added because Jack Black wouldn't stop going on and on about Kung Fu Panda so they were like ... we need to kill a panda LOL
The fact that you didn't know that was Tom Cruise as Les the producer, LOL!!! Killing me!!
that was great! And the suspense in waiting to see their reaction upon finding out was great! And to be fair, first time i saw this move, i didnt clock it was Tom Cruise until right at the end.
@@gepisar It was right after he had the grip hit the director in the face and I knew because of his voice, lol.
@@tinahairston6383Same for me. It was the way he said it, I started to think it might be him, then looked at his eyes, and knew it was him.
@@gepisarme either. I was shocked the first time I saw it lol. It was awesome!!!
It’s such a joy seeing people realize that for real.
“What do you mean, you people?” Kills me every time. 🤣🤣
RDJ actually did stay in character for the DVD commentary! 😂😂😂
Yep. And he even switched to the Australian character when his part changed in the movie.
And he made a separate bts movie on the DVD "preparing" for the role
It was glorious.
Yeah he had PTSD scenes in the commentary that were pretty funny.
I almost fell out of my chair when he switched accents. So funny!
Ben Stiller came up with this movie idea when he acted on "Empire of the Sun." He said some of the cast went through a short boot camp before the rest of them arrived and talked like they were really soldiers. They took it so seriously he thought it would be fun to make a movie poking fun at that and the other members of the motion picture industry.
Such a crazy comedy.
Let’s not forget Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for an Academy Award for this role.
"I'm a lead farmer Mf'er!"
Wonder if he could possibly reprise that role in today's current climate LOL
If it wasn't for Heath Ledger's Joker...
@yt45204 It was a shame he didn't win that year...
Never go full rtard was quoted so many times. It went hand in hand with Kony.
Robert Downey Jr. is NOT playing a brother. He is playing a white method actor (Kirk Lazarus) who's undergone surgical pigmentation of skin to play a brother in the movie they're shooting. Kirk Lazarus is playing a brother.
You mean like he's a dude playin' a dude disguised as ANOTHER dude
RDJ's character us a parody of Russell Crowe
He's a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude😂😂😂
@@kylaarmstrong-benjamin8066 What?
@@Byrvurra he's a dude, playin a dude, disguised as another dude! 😜
How many of us were waiting for them to figure out Les is played oh Tom Cruise?
31:00 “who’s playing Les?”
Everyone: 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yeah, I knew they would totally flip out in disbelief when they found who played Les Grossman.
It was so out of character for Cruise, I get the confusion.
Me! And it was hilarious!!!
A good portion of the audience, when this was in theaters, didn't know. I'm surprised
Yep!
This is probably the funniest movie of the 2000s. Instant classic.
This, Stepbrothers, Superbad, Hangover are in contention.
Halfsquat being flung into the river is my favorite scene.
40yr old virgin & grandmas boy too
Borat is up there with all of them too. To this day I have never heard a theater erupt in laughter so loud as I did when Borat and Azamat had their hotel room fight.
Anchorman! 😉
Pineapple Express
"I don't read scripts, scripts reads me" is his way of telling that he is a method actor
Also that he's batshit crazy.
I get so into character that I inhabit that they write the script around what I wind up doing and saying because it's better than any writer could script
@@elbruces”I am a little confused” 🤣🤣🤣
The fact that no one who has followed Tom Cruise career could envision him in this role yet he absolutely knocked it out of the park just goes to show what a talented and versatile actor he is.
Thank you for giving him credit. I feel he gets a lot of unwarranted heat just like Michael Jackson. Only in america
😂😂 Unwarranted
because he's basically playing himself lol this is how he acts off camera
I kept waiting for them to recognize Tom Cruise, having it at the end with the credits did make it awesome . They will have to rewatch those scenes
Tom Cruise really should have done more comedies, because his comedy timing was great in this movie.
yup, this was great... for 50 mins all i was thinking is "when will the penny drop????" That was great!
I literally had no idea that was Tom Cruise until the credits
Same! But greatly amused when they found our!
@@NecramoniumVideo His movie "Knight and Day" with Cameron Diaz is also hilarious. :)
Amber Jaw drop. "Whaddya mean you People!" Priceless.😂
Apparently Tom Cruz had taken hip hop dancing lessons for a movie that ended up not getting released, he told Ben Stiller he’d do this movie as long as he writes in a part where he can dance so the lessons wouldn’t go to waste.
I've always wondered where the hell he got those moves from!
My friend was the hip hop instructor that taught Tom Cruise the moves he used in the movie. Cruise would go to the studio with his children. Obviously, they were private lessons and my friend would close the studio for them.
One of the best comedies of all time. It deserves way more credit than it has.
2:12 You're confused? Imagine being in the theater and these start immediately after the legitimate previews. Leaning over to you friend like, "Is this real? wtf is happening?"
I worked at a theater at the time. I remember wondering if we got an ad for a different theater when the Booty Sweat commercial started. 😂
Maybe in the US, but outside the US anyone would see a drink called "Booty Sweat" as a parody, then the second clip with Stiller should have made people realise.
I run a theatre and my first time was three or four nights after opening this. I don’t get to watch all of most shows because I’m usually busy, but the reactions of customers to that part of the movie was the whole reason I had to watch this. 🫣
Lol it really was one of the most special movie moments for me
Wtf is happening could easily sum up most of this movie.
Ben Stiller getting shot in that first scene was a parody of “Platoon”
That would be a great movie for them to watch.
William Dafoe (who was also in platoon) parodied Platoon scene in Boonedog Saints as well. He did an awesome job doing it.
@@bretttodd6470 “There was a firefight!!!” 🔥🔥 👏👏👏
..
“What if was one guy with 6 guns?” Only time that guy got something right! 😂😂😂
And the whole thing about Stiller connecting and wanting to stay is a parody of Apocalypse Now
@@jeanstrickland2445 not really because that scene will just be them going "oh, from Tropic Thunder" and it'll lose it's significance. Should have got them to watch it first
Best moments: her gut busting laugh at the “I was wrong” and again when he tosses the baby. Priceless. And then the capper when they find out it was TC. Too good! Love you both
No one thought Tom Cruise would be a good part of this in the beginning. Hilarious performance and movie.
Surprisingly great!
It was his comeback after all of the stuff he did in the past But it wasn't canceled
Interesting note: Tom Cruise was on casting list if an Iron Man movie was made in the 90s. Ironic he co-starred with the actor that did portray Iron Man in live-action.
@@klass_1221I thought Tom cruise was also on the list for the 2008 iron man as well
As much as i don't like Tom Cruise, I cannot deny his talent
One of my favorite from you two. I really loved watching you slowly ‘get it’ over the first 20 min. Not to mention the whole Tom cruise thing!
Amber and Jay laugh at the end with that baby had me in tears. Im really surprised they didnt recognize that was Tom Cruise as Les
This is the first reaction of this movie where the reactors had to wait for the credits to figure out Tom Cruise played Les Grossman. Absolutely brilliant ❤❤❤
There's another one now. 😂
"'m a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude"
In reality tho. RDJ was a dude playing a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude
@@hypocritex yep, it's a missed 4th wall break.. kinda sorta
Tropic Thunder is a movie about making a movie that became another movie
"the dude are emerging..." 😂
@@BlackavarWD 👍
Gotta see "Zoolander!"
Ben Stiller in his best element!!
Absolutely a silly, funny, hilarious movie!
The one-liners are pure gold!
..." cough, cough, I've got the Black Lung Papa." Kills me every time!!! 😂
"Maybe a school for ants! (knocks the model building over)
"But why male models?"
zoolander is actually my favourite movie
Dodgeball was awesome
Sitting here waiting through the credits for them to see Tom Cruise. Did not disappoint, lmao.
My favorite gag from this movie.. Tom Cruise dancing and Bill Hader in the background? Brilliant
Ben Stiller is a huge Star Trek fan and includes references to it in almost every one of his films.
In the words of Peter griffin. He’s a terrible actor
He's an amazing director though, and his acting isnt even bad, he got bunch of classics @@middleage_maniac1692
"I don't read the script. The script reads me." That's the one line that had me in tears, and SEVERAL lines in this movie were hilarious.
This was a great reaction.
I like when he breaks character after "spit that shit out man!" He's trying soooo hard to keep a straight face 😂
I recall the gasps that rippled through the auditorium when the words 'Tom Cruise' popped up on the screen, so you were far from the only people fooled. My jaw was on the floor myself. None of the promotional material revealed he was even in the film, for good reason. Even today Cruise maintains his iconic image (with the help of hair colourant no doubt) so that if you change just a couple of things about him, he's invisible on screen.
I was fooled.
I think that was intentional, the glasses and character and everything throw you off for the reveal at the end. It's really well done that they were able to hide him from so many people.
Its mostly the younger generation not realizing it, I THINK. I grew up watching him and knew by voice alone instantly. Only my daughter (14) immediately recognized him. Her cousins and big brother (14-22) didn't realize til the credits either.
Best DVD commentary. RDJ doesn't drop character. He does the whole thing in black voice.
"A month behind schedule just five days into filming" is so good.
Ben Stiller is also in Mystery Men, which, if you haven't seen it, is a superhero movie and it's hilarious.
I've seen 90% of roles that Tom Cruise has been in. Les is the best Tom Cruise character ever in the history of Tom Cruises career. Les Grossman is the Tom Cruise role we all did not know that we needed.
Truth.
This one, Lestat and the dude in Collateral; interestingly all bad guys. Probably because he's besties with a psico, so he gets them (if not one himself).
Magnolia
Vincent from Collateral.
Y'all out of line for not mentioning Jerry Maguire lol...
Downey Jr was nominated for an Oscar for his role in this film 🙌
yeah but Hollywood is so woke now I bet he'd say he regrets playing the role.
@@dianedeck9790 No he absolutely would not.
RDJ and Tom Cruise are the co-MVPs of this one.
I agree
Nah. Rob took season MVP, Cruise took Finals MVP lol.
Everybody in this movie absolutely killed it! I watch this movie every so often for the last 10+ years, it’s absolutely brilliant. The fact that you didn’t know Les was played by Tom Cruise is hilarious as well. Maybe it’s just because I am older, but I recognize that voice anywhere.
8:40 I enjoy that Jay knows Danny Mcbride as his eastbound and down character "Kenny powers" lol
I feel like Danny McBride hasn’t had the role of a lifetime yet. I hope he gets it

THIS IS THE END
I like that, 'Do you remember DVD's had trailers like that?'. I'm old. I remember way back when, to see a movie, you went to a special building and they'd have trailers at the beginning. 😉
The reaction to Tom Cruise is hilarious, I was crying with laughter knowing who it was and then when it was revealed" NOOOOO WAAAYYYY! Brilliant.
In the 90s Time Magazine had 2 child soldier generals smoking cigars on the cover, that's where the kids character came from
When Ben Stiller asked if Tom Cruise wanted the part of Les Grossman, he said "Yes, but I want fat hands and I want to dance."
Just came in to make this comment. Best thing about the entire move. 😅😂
Everybody loves Les!!! The fact that y'all have done music reviews and recognize CCR playing while they are walking through the jungle 💪🏼 you 2 are awesome 😎
There's a few references to Vietnam War films. Ben Stiller's open armed gesture is a reference to Willem Dafoe in _Platoon_ and the confrontation between Tugg and Kirk at the end is framed exactly like the confrontation between Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall in _Apocalypse Now_
One of my favorite bits of trivia is that the fake Vietnam vet Four Leaf is played by Nick Nolte, an actual Vietnam vet.
Add in the scene at 36:31 mimics another Apocalypse Now when Sheen is first in the room with Brando. And at 40:59 “you tell the world what happened here” was from We Were Soldiers Once…And Young - Mel Gibson to Barry Pepper playing LtCol Moore to Joe Galloway.
Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now? Don’t you mean Marlon Brando?
That's the "Jesus Pose."
@@Ryan_Christopher,Robert Duvall was in Apocalypse Now. He was the Air Cav Commander.
This is at least the second channel that reacted to this movie that had no clue that Les was played by Tom Cruise which boggles my mind. His voice alone gives it away immediately, plus his face isn't altered at all except for the glasses and his hair. Still a great reaction as always! :)
This movie is so HILARIOUS!!! Y'all weren't ready for this one, LOL!
I've seen many many many reactions to this movie cause I love how comical this movie is and I believe this is the best reaction over all the others. You've kept so many great points of this movie in the reaction vs other reactions who cut parts out .... This is the best reaction to this movie! Awesome job guys!!!
I have watched thousands of reactions over the years of many different channels and real good people reacting and this IS by far the BEST reaction I have seen so far !!!!! BRAVO !!! BRAVO !!!!! EXCELLENT JOB !!!!!!!! Not knowing Tom Cruise to the end was the cherry on top !!!!!!!!!!
I love this movie! Robert Downey Jr is hysterical! Also Tom Cruise is great!
If you haveent watched it yet, I highly recommend a movie Chaplin (biographical drama) from 1992 in which RDJ proved what he can do as an actor and because of which i wasnt surprised much by his acting skills in tropic thunder. I think RDJ will be forever grateful to Ben Stiller for casting him for his movie after his career downfall, being dragged in court, media and in jail because of his drama with his drug problems.
Nice reaction video, great content!
ROB SQUAD, I can't say how happy I am that you guys chose this film!!
Robert Downey Jr brings method acting to a whole other level as his character in this film!!!😅😅

This walks so many lines brilliantly. I mean… there’s the big one, but could you imagine any of this being done any other way, without being offensive? This movie is a master class.
They were trying so hard to not laugh at Simple Jack 😂😂
"At least you got to pick yours, I'm stuck with mine" my favorite line in the movie.
I've seen that film several times and that's the first time I noticed that joke. So many bits in that film.

Every time I watch someone's reaction I pick up a new line I didn't notice before.
My fav is when RDJ says ‘You talkin to me this whole time?!’ My uncle says this, basically sayin, I wasn’t even listening, and you still felt the need to talk..you didn’t notice I wasn’t listening.
It's so funny. I think the kid in the photo was like Ben Stiller's nephew or something, some cast member's relative anyway.
Oscar worthy line read from Mcconaughey.
This has to be the most satisfying Tropic Thunder reaction ever. You hit all the right notes guys! And the Les reveal at the end was *chef's kiss*!
And Ben Stiller's direction must have been insane. What other movie not only has so many A listers but gets them to bring their A+ game across the board!!!
Jay Barunchel’s face when Ben Stiller says you people makes me laugh my ass off still after what 15/16 years.
Me too.😂😂😂
Such a funny movie! When I first saw it I spent the whole movie thinking "who's that playing the producer, he looks really familiar?", but I didn't realise until the end credits. The fat suit and bald wig really make a difference.
I was waiting the whole time for you to recognize Tom Cruise. I love it when people don’t realize until the credits!
Hey Jay& Amber You both crushed this reaction for me here ! I had a tough Friday.... spent all of it in bed with a migraine . I am so glad I was feeling better this morning. Your reactions and comments here for Tropic Thunder cheered me up so much. I was really surprised that one of you did not pick up on Tom Cruise's character.... this was about my 10th time watching Tropic Thunder since it was released so there were not many surprises for me but your reactions were the icing on the cake .
My first time watching Tropic Thunder it took me about 29:min. in to realize that was Tom Cruise in the meeting with Matthew McConaughey . It did not cross my mind in the beginning but it was he eyes.... if it is someone I am familiar with or someone famous I notice their eyes first.
The whole Star cast knocked this out of the park for me but your reactions to Tropic Thunder made my weekend . Thank you both for your channel #DeathProof~2007
In many years, if you ever feel the need to throw in some "rewatch" nights, i hope this is the first one. Yall are priceless and this was a great time.
I watched this in the theater when it first came out and had the same Tom Cruise reaction at the end. I still quote this movie all the time. Such a great movie.
On the DVD they have cast commentary, and Robert Downey Jr stays in character all the way through it. In the movie he said "I stay in character til the end of the DVD commentary"
My favorite part was when he told Ben still in character "Ben. Ben. Miss me with that bullshit." 😂
He actually said "I don't drop character until I've done the DVD commentary".

Walk Hard: The Dewy Cox Story is another comedy epic from rhat era that really holds up.
"Tropic Thunder" is just an amazing movie. Hall of fame comedy. It's incredible. Tom Cruise is so good as Les Grossman, and his dance is great too.
Might have been better if you'd seen "Platoon" before this. But maybe you'll make a reverse connection when you do see it. There's lots of references to things in this film, and I realize you probably won't ever catch them all.
This was definitely worth the wait! Tropic Thunder is an amazing movie.
Omg... I've seen so many reactions to this movie by now... and I'm pretty sure that this was the best one.. by far. U didn't get all awkward like a lot of ppl do, and took it for what it was.. hilarious. And the fact u didnt realize Les was Tom Cruise had me giddy like a little girl full of anticipation for u to see the reveal. This had me cracking up the whole time.. glad u guys enjoyed it.. this was really fun. This is probably my favorite roles for RDJ and Tom Cruise.. amazing acting all around
Robert Downey Jr is great. Two of his best acting roles were in "Chaplin" and "Less than Zero".
Less than Zero he played himself.
Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy played in the movie 48 hrs. It's a funny movie as well. You will enjoy it.
The comedy America needs in 2024.
No, the comedy America needs in 2024, is "Brazil" (Terry Gilliam, 1985).
"Have a laugh at the horrors of things to come" may be the most prophetic movie tag line of the 80's.

Your reactions during the last half of this movie had me literally in tears. I haven't laugh cried like that in a long time. That might be my favorite reaction to date, thank you for the laughs.
When I saw you guys were doing Tropic Thunder, I couldn't wait to see your reactions to this crazy movie. I knew you two would love it. But, seeing your reactions to finding out that Tom Cruise was Les . . . well, as Amber said: "that was the cherry on top." The whole cast was great, but Robert Downey Jr was incredible. I remember seeing this in the theater and when it was over, we were just cracking up and thinking "what did we just watch?!" See you on the next one.

I may have been in denial the first time I saw this movie because I just couldn't figure out who was playing Les Grossman. He was so familiar but it kept eluding me. Then I saw the end credits and I was floored! Now, of course rewatching the movie it seems it's obviously TC. But your reactions brought back memories of my own shock.😂
Bloody LOVED your reaction to the Tom Cruise credit reveal hahaha; One of the most brilliant things about that performance/ character is the fact that it is the complete antithesis to the sort of handsome action hero that Cruise is so known for hahaha - it's my personal favourite performance of his

As far as I'm concerned that's Tom Cruise's best role ever 😂
He's also good in Collateral 💪🏼😊
Lestat in interview of the vampire is my favorite role from Tom cruise, he killed that.

People just have NO IDEA what a masterpiece this movie is!
WOW it took the 2 of you guys until the credits were rolling to see it was Tom Cruise. It took me about his 3rd or 4th bit of dialog to figure it out. And he did it all for free. You all should watch him in the musical about him being a aging rock star. Doesn't do a bad job with his singing either, its called Rock of Ages and its cast was very good too!
There are quite a few funny scenes and funny lines in this movie but to me one of the FUNNIEST is Ben Stiller being dunked in the water and screaming "CUT" every time he comes up for air!!😅😅😅😅

46:46 best Tropic Thunder reaction LOL
I watched this movie in theatre with my buddy when this came out in 2008
We didn't recognize Tom Cruise like you guys until end of the movie
We laughed so hard when we found out 😁
The "I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude" remix song is epic.
The absolute best moment in movie reaction history is you two finding out Les was Tom Cruise. I’ve seen people react to this and some people figure it out faster than others but usually the voice gives it away. I could not wait for you guys to see the credits. I’ve never been more excited. I’ll be honest, I didn’t figure it out either. I knew the voice but couldn’t place him. And at the end I was floored. Awesome reaction guys. Love you two
I like quite a few Tom Cruise movies, but I really respect him as an actor when he plays Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder and Frank "TJ" Mackie in Magnolia. The two movies could not be more different, but they are both great ensemble movies. And they both show that Cruise, when he wants to, can play against type.
When I first saw this movie I kept asking myself who is playing Les? I had the exact same reaction as you did. Now every once in a while I go back and just watch Les’ dance at the end.
I need more Les Grossman roles! 😂😂😂
🎼 Heads Up!
I just heard about Tom cruise wanting that roll because he had recently been taking hip hop dance classes. Easy, my #1 comedy movie. So great!
another comedy staring Ben Stiller for you to react to is "Mystery Men". a very fun, criminally underrated superhero parody with a great ensemble cast.
The Shoveler, Blue Rasha, The Splien, invisible boy, the bowler, Mr Frustration and The Sphinx. Casanova Frankenstein is also Captain Barbosa From Pirates of the Caribbean
That was a great movie. 👍
Watched this in the theater, the reaction when the end credits shows the name Tom Cruise was similar to yours. Most people didn't see through that disguise even though it's very obvious when you know.
The Oldman with the fake hands was Nick Nolte. You guys have to react to 48 hours with him and Eddie Murphy.
Nolte is an amazing actor. Every movie he's in he tends to steal the show.

One of my favorite movies.
Normally, I can't stand Tom Cruise. But he absolutely killed it as Les Grossman and stole every scene he was in in the best ways possible.
Tom and RDJ were the absolute MVPs of the movie. Though everyone else was also great. Honestly, this is one of the few movies I've never had a single complaint about.
I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out and I was like you guys I had no idea that was Tom Cruise until the end and now when I watch it you can’t believe that you didn’t realize it was him

You know why Robert Downey Jr.'s performance is so good.
Because for once in his life he stopped being Tony Stark and really did his job like a professional actor. That's why his performance is one of the best in the movie. With a well-deserved Oscar nomination.
Since his return to Hollywood and his first performance as Tony Stark in all his films he always acts as "Tony Stark". On the other hand, in TropiCThunder it makes you forget everything and really believe its interpretation. That's what a professional actor does. Make you, as a viewer, believe what the actor is trying to convey in the film.
