Long ago I met the amazing Jeffrey Tambor on an airplane. He was on, at the time, my favorite tv show, Hill Street Blues. After a brief talk where I had him convinced I was a stand up comedian, I recommended that he see they hysterically funny, Real Genius. He encouraged that I go see Brazil. That was nearly 40 years ago. Your list reminded me of the brief encounter. I can not wait to watch Brazil. Thanks for sharing your passion.
Unbelievable quality in this list. "Brazil" and "Ran" are two timeless masterpieces. Apart from those two, my other 4 favourites are: - "To Live and Die in L.A." - "Runaway Train" - "After Hours" - "Year of the Dragon"
Such a great year. My favorites are: 10. The Adventures of Mark Twain 9. Clue 8. Day of the Dead 7. The Return of the Living Dead 6. Shoah 5. Back to the Future 4. Ran 3. Brazil 2. Angel's Egg 1. Come and See
I ended up grabbing Ran on blu-ray from my local library network upon your recommendation here. I can't believe I hadn't seen this yet. What a life-changing film. Thank you so much for including it on your list- it's one of the absolute best.
ok, ok, I'll give in and add it to my watch list. I've seen it mentioned several times, even watched a bit of the trailer, and still pushed away from it as it's not my language. But, finally I will relent my ego! Due to your comments I must give it a try and push through.
Your lists are great, they helped me get through my bout with Covid this week, thanks. My favorite film of 1985 is Fandango with Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson. A great film about friendship and the end of an era for a group of college friends and their quest to relive it all one last time before life, war and responsibility break them apart.
I do use your lists as a guide on which films to use in my montages. But I always learn about certain films I’ve never heard of. Thanks for introducing me to them.
Thank you so much for the videos you make. I enjoy it more than words can express. Not to mention I always walk away with a few more movies I need to see. This was a long one, but worth the watch.
I saw Come and See back in 2021. Had no words at what I saw once it was finished. Imagine trying to do the same thing but from the Axis (and to lesser extent Allies) like Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers but as legit horror movie. While Philip Glass’ score for Mishima was excellent. And made it to the first three hours of Shoah.
Love your lists! I haven't seen too many from 1985, but here are mine: 10 Ran - Akira Kurosawa 9 Brazil - Terry Gilliam 8 Police Story - Jackie Chan 7 Tampopo - Itami Juzo 6 After Hours - Martin Scorsese 5 A Zed & Two Noughts - Peter Greenaway 4 Time to Live and Time to Die - Hou Hsiao Hsien 3 Taipei Story - Edward Yang 2 AK - Chris Marker 1 The Legend of Surami Fortress - Sergei Parajanov
Incredible list. Your knowledge on movies is crazy. I was born in 93 and it's fun looking at these type of videos of all these films that came out before I was born. Another movie in 85 that I thought was great, was one I found by accident during my teenage years. It's called "Heart of Dragon" and it features Jackie Chan playing a cop who tries to balance his love life with taking care of his mentally disabled nearly 30 year old brother played by Sammo Hung. It's comedic, has great action choreography and very emotionally intense when it comes to the scenes with Jackie and Sammo. It's a movie I can put on and enjoy at anytime.
A bit late on this one, but great video! 1985 certainly was one of the best years for film. I know I said Come And See was my favorite, and I still think it's one of the best ever made, but some time inbetween this video and the last top 10, I gave Mishima a rewatch and ... Well, excuse my French here, but holy shit, I literally transcended. I basically think I had a religious experience lmao. Mishima is now my all-time favorite film. I still understand why it didn't make the list though, as it certainly isn't a film for everyone, but it certainly is the film for me. Still, great job on this video! This one is among your best. Cheers!
so glad to see To Live and Die in LA on here. that’s definitely my #1 of 85. I would give a lot to be able to go back and relive the ending again. I don’t think anything has ever shocked me to that degree. what a film! love your lists.
A little late to the channel, I'm afraid. Surprised at your family connections, but never mind. Just getting into all the lists! I'll suggest The Falcoln & The Snowman, with Timothy Hutton & Sean Penn in a brilliant and often overlooked role. SO glad somebody remembers After Hours!
Though fog of time I remember this old fancy movie where they used ponton boat with shark teeth painted on it's front - it had to be Missing in action movie with Chuck Norris. OMG thanks for making these videos.
My personal top 20 films of 85 1. Back To The Future 2. Young Sherlock Holmes 3. Witness 4. Explorers 5. Breakfast Club 6. Gotcha! 7. Fright Night 8. Desperately Seeking Susan 9. After Hours 10. The very year I was born gave me three of my Top 💯 Favorite Films of All Time. On top of this year for me is Ran, followed by Brazil, and then Lifeforce.
My Top 15 1. After Hours 2. The Color Purple 3. Back To The Future 4. Pee Wees Big Adventure 5. Fletch 6. Ran 7. Real Genius 8. Clue 9. The Last Dragon 10. Brazil 11.Enemy Mine 12. Cats Eye 13. Return of the Living Dead 14. Return To OZ 15. Fright Night

Back to the Future 1. The Breakfast Club (and also my #1 overall)
Granted, this is a tough year to rank. I would argue that "Come And See" is one of the greatest war movies ever made. And "Shoah" is one of the greatest documentaries ever made. I saw Brazil on video back in the late 80s in my H. S. film club. Like most good Americans, I despised it then. Today I might marvel at its accomplishments, but I would not be enthused to peruse it. If I were my teenage self back then, I'd nominate Back To The Future as my favorite film, since it genuinely made me feel joy and fun, and rewarded my moviegoing. The fact that so many Brits---not only Harry---prefer this bleakest of films (ironically directed by an American), show the divide is more than that of an ocean.
Daring to call the hero (Agent) from "To Live and Die in L.A." to let it die. Especially with "Rambo part 2" a favorite for me from 1985. Great summary!
Have to give it to Stallone, after writing movie's that had real character development and stories he figured out the studio system and make popcorn flicks that racked in hundreds of millions.

What a great tear in film. You could have listed your honorable mentions as a top ten and I would have bought it.

Great list with maybe unjust omission of Clue...My favourite is Ladyhawke hehehe, but objectively there's no room for it.
"Come And See" messed me up.

How about Remo Williams The Adventure Begins?
I love After Hours, I think it's very underrated. Definitely one of Scorsesse's best, it's dark, funny and bizarre.
My favorite Rebecca De Mornay role is in Runaway Train.
Clue is a great hidden gem. Funny, smart and a little dark. Would have it up there with Back to the Future and Come and See.
Death Wish 3 is amazing, with politics that are both funny and weird.

Pale Rider
Brewster's Millions
Weird Science
The Legend of Billie Jean
Thunder Alley
What, no "Prizzi's Honor"?
yeah, right here on the oriental...
The Falcon and the Snowman was the best film of 1985. Should've been at least mentioned.
Siskel and Ebert voted Pee Wee adventure one of the worst movies of 1985.
Fright night is much higher up. Definitly above police story.
The Goonies
Pale Rider
Witness
Lifeforce
Out of Africa
Mispronounced some words bro. Ma- toos- sak. And ah-mish.
What a fucking year.
