    WOW. Thank you x 100! TH-cam didn't exist when I first started to suffer at 18, I had no idea what was going on and was unable to tell anyone for fear or judgement due to the nature of my intrusive thoughts. This would have saved me years of rumination and mental torment. This should be taught in schools. Thank you for sharing your knowledge it is truly eye opening and I can't wait to watch the whole series!

    This is quite extraordinary. Over these 3 videos so far I have learned so much, and I am getting a new perspective into what is really going on with myself, and how to self soothe. I actually realised that I actually do sometimes use a placebo to trick my subconscious mind, but I never realised actually did it or how effective it actually was until I saw this video and look back. When I am very happy, I talk to Myself ALOT. I think the reason for this is because of the placebo that I placed on myself(without realising) , overlooking all the good and neglecting the bad. I will try these placebo techniques out and can't wait to watch the next video. Thank you, from the Republic of Ireland! 🇮🇪❤️

      I am not a psychologist so I can't give you academic advice on this, only my personal views as an engineer. I love Jung's work especially around archetypes, in fact, I think that learning about personality types, emotion stacks and the like is a big part of therapy that has been missing for years.
      My focus these days is not on understanding why we are the way we are, but more on what we need to do to live better lives and feel better. How we can reprogram ourselves.
      To that end, here are a list of people I like, although academically these people would often be scoffed at for being 'new age' - but they work, if a person puts the effort in to reprogram the brain.

    • @TheCalmnessinMindProcess
      @TheCalmnessinMindProcess  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is the trapped emotions from the past trauma that needs to be released. There is the "Story" about what happened and then there are the stuck emotions from what happened. See anxiety as a good thing, see it as stuck emotions coming up, rather than you trying to avoid anxiety which is pushing stuck emotions (that want to escape) back down!

    I have been having very annoying,intrusive thoughts, that ask me to do very unimportant and pointless things, for the most strange irrelevant reasons, I have not been doing it, however, i notice that especially when I am alone, the thoughts tend to get worse and creep up. It's almost as if, my subconscious brings them up, but I cannot consciously allow myself to do it, I used to do compulsions, and then ask myself "why did i do that, or why did i have to do that". Without even thinking I would just do it to not have to deal with obsessive thoughts, however, i soon realized that this began to get worse, as it became a cycle, and it seemed something always ended up becoming an obsession, from deleting text messages, to deleting phone convos, I knew I had to stop. I have been watching these videos and I do see differences and improvements, I just hope I continue to get rid of these pointless thoughts, that cause exhausting and intrusive arguments in the mind.

    • @TheCalmnessinMindProcess

      @@TheCalmnessinMindProcess I understand that John, but I have been having trouble making decisions lately, feeling stuck or paralyzed making some specific decisions, let me give you an example, i bought a new computer, and now i have my old one lying around, my ocd says to visit an old site and click on the cookies agreement, because it's possible that I did not do that months ago due to OCD intrusive thoughts/images. It says if thats true you must do it! Now i know this is just plain silly, but here is the thing. It creates confusion in the sense that I do not know if I want to turn on my old computer out of freedom/creativity, or am I doing it because of anxiety/ocd? I keep thinking about doing it but can not even physically plug in the computer because it gives a very bad feeling, and I do not want to do things because of anxiety or ocd. Very good presentation imo! Your description of the “3 brains” makes so much sense. Perhaps I’m not quite getting this but if the sub or unconscious emotional brain doesn’t understand language, how do thoughts actually affect it? Perhaps it’s that language has no meaning apart from its relationship to actual or imagined “things”?

    Hey John, my name is Dennis Goldenberg. I am a 3rd year mathematics major at Georgia Tech university. I am currently 20 years old, and struggling mightily with OCD. I have been struggling for my whole life, but the obsessive thoughts have been much more prevalent the last 5 years. I would like to thank you for sharing the tidbit about examining what happened the 6 months previous. In those 6 months, i became obsessed with my body image and my social image, due to a string of rejections relating to my friendships and romantic interests. I lost 25 lbs in one summer, and became borderline anorexic. I put up a totally fake persona, and became obsessed with social media. The next 5 years, although I was extremely successful at school, were something akin to a nightmare. My obsessions have ruined many romantic relationships and even soured friendships and social connections.
    My question to you is this: I have 2-3 years left in college; considering the 5-year length of my struggle, is it still possible for me to enjoy what’s supposed to be “the best 4 years of your life?”

      Any thing is possible! The secret is to become a new identity, rather than forcing your old identity to fit in to a new model. For example, my old OCD identity feared looking stupid - my new non-OCD identity fears not living a rich life.
      So, in my course I teach the best way to understand yourself better, then how to reprogram the mind and body to react in new ways.

      This sounds a bit like ADHd which (crudely) is the inability to remain focussed on one thing...
      IMHO, ADHD is the result of a brain, that was not conditioned through childhood, to learn how to keep the focus of awareness, on a single task.
      A better way to explain it might be - the inability to not be distracted.
      So, if that skill is lacking in the brain, the brain needs to be reprogrammed to put it back in, rather than chemically trying to adjust it.
      But what gets in the way of the reprogramming - is the belief that you might "miss out" on something, FOMO!
      The problem of this unconditioned part of the brain is further compounded, if the person is extroverted, creative or has a good imagination - because, then, EVERYTHING is interesting and everything is a distraction.....
      Which basically means "I can't concentrate on one thing."
      So, it is hard, but the brain CAN be reconditioned, through knowing what to do and intense repetition - and importantly, picking one intention and staying with it no matter what else happens around you.
      There is not enough space here to outline the complexities of this process - but my Patreon course is slowly building a resource of videos that explains this and how to reprogram your own brain!

    I have this strange situation where I've dealt with almost everything else in my mind, nearly all the fears I did have I am now able to deal with when they arise in my head. But there's this one thought which stays, which is about a music artist who I am a massive fan of and someone who I really look up to. Even though i'm almost 100% sure i'm a good person, there is this very small percentage of my mind which is unsure. And as a result I worry whether that person would like me. as you have mentioned in your videos before, Maybe that little nagging doubt is due to the fact the unconscious and conscious mind don't work together.
    As you've said OCD will use any opportunity it gets to morph into something else you fear, so it's about catching and making sure it doesn't create another worry.

    Great video. Right now I'm suffering from anxiety and OCD. And maybe depression also. For my anxiety and OCD, it came from Coronavirus. I'm really really scared of it so in this couple of months it anxiety and OCD became really bad. Right now taking anti-anxiety drug to keep it down but this will not fix it. Doctor gave me SSRI also but did not want to take that. I go to work every day really hard to do anything at work but I have to go to work. So I'm out so what made my anxiety really bad is I don't want to bring it back to my house and get everyone sick. I don't have coronavirus but I just think that I may have it. So I keep away from my kids and wife all the time. For OCD I feel like that I may have coronavirus on my hand so I wash my hands all the time, can't touch anything at my house just thinking I may spread it. Cant go shopping, eat, etc thinking that I will get it. So this couple of months is a very hard time for me. I really want to get my life back and smile with my family and give all a big hugs. It's really sad that can't do it. I try all kinds of natural things supplements, food, etc but not getting better.
    For me how to fix it what should I do? The only way is when coronavirus goes away? or vaccine is finished?
    Really hope that I can find a way to fix it

    • @TheCalmnessinMindProcess

      This is probably the saddest thing I have read for a very long time. Children are not dying of Coronavirus and healthy adults have a 0.01% chance of dying if they catch it. Basically, the same as flu. For this ridiculously low risk rate your OCD will not let you hug your family and is traumatising you and probably your children too. I can't figure out why the governments have been so draconian and fearful about the whole situation given that practically the same amount of people are dying (old and sick ones) as do most years from flu.
      There must be some other 'driver' behind all this control and fear mongering! But I don't know what that is..... Perhaps one day we will find out.
      One thing I do know is that living with fear compromises your immune system and that increases your chance of illness, whereas being calm, hugging, loving and connection boost immune systems and lower the chances of illness.
      I am still hugging my family, friends and children, because life is too short and precious not to.
      If my videos are making sense, you might like to join my Patreon OCD community where I have many more videos teaching how to worry less and re-engage with life. www.patreon.com/theanxietyspecialist Best wishes John

      @@TheCalmnessinMindProcess Thank you very much for great message. Its a great help for me. I will go home tonight and try my hard to give big hug to my kids and to my wife. I have to beat OCD tonight.
      Same with Japan they only say scary news every day so it was my big mistake I was following all the updates on the news. Also the government I don't know why also. It was too late for me to stop watching the news but I don't know why this OCD makes me want to check the news.
      Yes, since with this big fear every day I am worried about if my immune system is really low so very easy for me to catch it. That also makes me worry every day and get my OCD and anxiety worse. I need to get my immune system strong for sure so I can fight coronavirus.

      Good for you, that is real courage! Plus, you are becoming a powerful role model for you children.
      We need to see OCD as a parasite that feeds off of fear, the way we get rid of parasites is by starving them of their fuel (fear and drama).
      We do this by surrendering to what is, learning how to be calm and empowering our immune system. My course teaches all these things.

    Dear sir,
    Thank you for your videos, they really go further than any OCD videos in terms of analysis and understanding of that condition.
    I have OCD since I’m a child, started to change two years with new themes such as health, self harm, harm, relation etc. But 10 months ago it started to be severe. The anxiety started to give me physical symptoms such as diarrhea. Unfortunately my brain has linked that butterfly anxiety feeling in my stomach to I am going to have uncontrollable diarrhea in public.
    It has taken me out of work and I wasn’t able to go out at l for 5 months. Now I am 5 months into therapy and some of my themes gave switched. I am now able to go out with the fear of diarrhea but I still get sick every morning. Morning are just impossible I can’t go out or do anything especially when I’m alone. It’s like my stomach goes automatically sick. I am trying to ignore the thoughts and continue my life but the urge of running to the bathroom is too hard. It is stopping me from finding a job again. I don’t know how to do, would love some help :(
    Thanks and regards from Denmark

John, is this your very own way invention? Or is it CBT? This is quite genius! If I become a patron can both my daughter and I use the videos? Do you offer remote consultations? BTW both my daughter and I are IN FJ. I am enneagram type 6. No one has ever given me any hope for my daughter who I know is such a beautiful soul but suffering so much with this condition. When you say that the OCD starts with an episode of being self-conscious I now completely understand why she has it it’s not something that I want to post here but it makes total sense to me now. Hi, We can never fully stop unrequested thoughts coming in. - but if we can move our conscious awareness quickly away from them, we can limit the stress they cause on our body. Plus, if we stop asking why they come and worrying about what will happen if they do, this too reduces the stress on the body. • @TheCalmnessinMindProcess
      @TheCalmnessinMindProcess  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The same principles can be applied to PTSD, however there seem to be two more steps required.
      Firstly to release the trapped trauma (held down fear) stored in the body - (this is REALLY important), and secondly, the retraining of those parts of the brain that were primed from that event to become hypersensitive as a human protection mechanism.
      I suppose thirdly, there is the requirement for the person to redevelop the confidence and self-esteem they lost from having PTSD.

      If talking to yourself with love and calmness becomes an addiction - I say - Wonderful!!!!!
      Uncertainty is life. Therefore, act in line with the intentions you wish for your life, then adjust, then act again, then adjust, then act again!
      This way, you will always be heading towards your dreams regardless of what uncertainty brings.
      Otherwise, you'll be waiting until certainty is here before you act - and that is a trap - as there is no such thing as a certainty!

    Hello John, I have just begun ERP therapy. I broke up with my partner after suffering from ROCD and anxiety for months. My gut told me to break up with them early in the relationship. But I fought it because I did not want to, because I love them. As the relationship went on the voice got louder and louder and my ROCD got louder and louder. I had to break up with them and I did in a period of extreme anxiety and overwhelmedness. I desire so much now to reach out to them now that I understand what I suffered from. But this decision and desire feels like one that is not coming from a place of calm, it overwhelms like the thought of breaking up with her would. How can I work on finding out whether this desire is one born from OCD or from me, and why does my gut tell me I should embrace my decision even though I love and miss her? Should I wait to learn how to have a calm mind and practice ERP and follow your course before I make a big decision like this? Or should I embrace my desire without worrying about the outcome? What resource do you think would help me with this?

    Hi john, thanks for your content. I know that the way for getting along with the thought and the emotions is to accept them and observe them for creating space. But you suggesting here to trick the mind, tracking the mind doesn’t sound to me as accepting. Can you please make this point more clear? Thanks

      I teach how to accept what is happening until you can trick (or reprogram) the mind into working differently. A bit like accepting your back hurts until you have done the yoga to loosen it up. I go into lots of detail about this in the course and give many examples.

    since I have had ocd now (not for a long time) is it possible to Recover without there being any stress? Meaning when someone has ocd are their stress levels high all the time? Or is it just thoughts where stress levels don’t have anything to do with it? Because I already have anxiety symptoms I wouldn’t want it to get worse because of ocd and going through ocd recovery.

      Well, sorry but it is by stepping into the fear, that you learn to be OK with the body being anxious, this is called exposure therapy and it is a game changer. My anxiety has started because of pimples. I don't have pimples on my face now but that has made me so conscious to wash my hands cause a little dirt on the face of I touch my hands could cause it. Then I could not control the time I washed my hands and then started to count numbers. And now I count numbers for everything like wtf. This ocd thing suddenly hits me, I'm okay 90% of the time and don't even have thoughts about this. But then sometimes it just pops up in my mind and I suddenly tell myself wtf am I doing.
    And btw this only happens when I'm alone. Never have I shown any signs in public or around family members.

    Hi John, I need some advice please I have watched your videos up to 10. My anxiety started about 18 years ago after a relationship breakup which I didnt handle very well.. it developed into OCD which the theme of thoughts changed quite alot, which you have explained. I understand that the underlying cause is emotional exhaustion, which is probably still the case today after many low points over the 18 years and especially recently after intrusive thoughts caused another breakup. It's been a year now and I've been trying to recharge my emotional battery, how do I know when I'm feeling more emotionally charged? Also I'm very sure I'm avoiding relationships and social life in general, are these the things my anxiety has caused me to fear and when is right to start exposure to them? Or do I need to recharge properly first. Sorry for the long message..

      No, you thoughts are a trick to stop you getting on with life. So many people say I only have thoughts but no compulsions - however, they don't have compulsions because they don't do things because they-are obsessing about their thoughts. (Does this make sense?) So, if you ned to change your job, end a relationship, get into a relationship, move house etc. - Then by doing these things you are doing REAL ERP! just sitting with your thoughts is a trap. John

  • @eboory
    @eboory 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    But I though the subconscious doesn't understand words. So even if I replace the "omg it's so scary" with "it'll be fine". My subconscious won't see any difference. So what the point for replacing one with another?
    It's the tonality and speed I'm speaking in should matter, no?
    Of course for my rational self it would be still better to say " everything is fine" in a calmer tone rather than "it's so scary" but for the subconscious one is not much different from the other.

    That's interesting about the body responding to thoughts as if they're true.. I've had this obsession that if I think positive things, I'll jinx it and get even more bad things in return. So I just focus on the bad.. which just makes me feel even more anxious. I've been taught that being hopeful is bad, so I should always be realistic and expect the worst. What's so bad about being idealistic? It's not a crime punishable by death now is it? Without hope there is no future.. not a positive one at least.

    • @TheCalmnessinMindProcess
      @TheCalmnessinMindProcess  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your body responds to your thoughts (regardless of truths) negative thoughts will make you feel bad. Positive ones feel good. But the real issue is with a part of your brain called the RAS (look it up) through being pessimistic, train the unconscious brain to look for bad things that happen and feed that data to your conscious mind, therefore, the world will seem a more scary place. In n optimist, the unconscious mind scans fro positive events and feeds those through to the conscious mind. So, not only do optimists feel better, their minds are more full of the evidence that the world has good things.
      There is nothing wrong with being idealist! The real question is... Do you want to be calm and happy? If so, optimism always wins.
      Plus, if you get all quantum about things.... Thoughts collapse the sea of probability into actuality based upon the thoughts of the observer - so careful what you worry about!
      I go into a lot of detail about these things in my OCD course - www.patreon.com/theanxietyspecialist

    Hey John! I noticed you said the subconscious doesnt understand language and therefore it doesnt matter what you tell yourself. • @TheCalmnessinMindProcess
      @TheCalmnessinMindProcess  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you get to video 13 this will make sense - because in-between your conscious and your unconscious you have an ego, your values, your beliefs and all your conditioning from life, as well as, a judge, a victim, a rebel , an academic etc. All differing aspects of you in addition to your personality as well! I am leading people gently into the complexities of the mind. Once you are in there, you will realise that it is a den of dichotomies and has multi-viewpoint perspectives and objectives. So for now, assume that the unconscious only 'hears' like a child and makes more sense of tonality than words.

    Have you seen the work of the late Dr. John Sarno? He was one of the first to theorize the role of suppressed anger in chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, and carpal tunnel syndrome. He contended that the unconscious is trying to protect us (in a dysfunctional way) from experiencing “dangerous” emotions through physiological distraction. He also thought depression, ocd, and anxiety often functioned as equivalents. Some interesting parallels here.
