HOW TO turn iMac/Macbook screen into portrait mode:

It's about time someone did a VESA M1 iMac review. One issue left unmentioned: I heard that VESA M1 iMacs have the ability to pivot 90º for viewing in "portrait mode", but that this supposedly requires manipulating the iMac's display controls. I would appreciate it if someone to confirm this feature exists, and show it in operation. That would be extremely handy for letter-writing and desktop publishing tasks.

This feature exists. I covered this in my Studio Display review. Check the pinned comment to this video - you'll get exactly to the instructions.

    Dear apple, Wish list.
    1 - Black frame
2 - Edge to edge screen
That would be awesome when using vesa mount.

    • @wingsley

3: make 90º pivoting for display use in "portrait mode" as easy as possible, and make it known to the public.
4: bring back "Target Display Mode" from past Intel iMac models, so that this new generation of iMacs could be rebooted as an impromptu external display for use with iPhones, iPads, or even laptops or Mac Minis.
5: Hey Apple: how about changing the top tier of the iMac so that it offers a base version of the M1Pro?
6: Along the side of the iMac display, there is a lone port for the headphone plug (35mm jack). Why not add on an SD Card slot, USB-C and USB-A port with the headphone plug?
7: Why not offer a premium iMac is a gold color? Or do a "space grey" color option?
8: Make ALL next-generation iMacs VESA-mounted by design, with the stand attached via VESA mount.

What VESA mount are you connecting to you new orange iMac M1? I've been reading about VESA mounts and in one discussion it was mentioned that the light weight of the iMac M1 could be an issue for VESA mounts designed to hold heavier devices. I like the white color of your VESA mount. The ease and range of movement of your the iMac on your VESA mount looked stunning in its flexibility without appearing 'stiff' to adjust. Thank you also for this great video with details like the placement of the arrow keys on the keyboard, and specifications of transfer speeds to SSD.

I don’t know why ifixit says you need to replace the existing mount on a regular non vesa by removing the screen. All you need to do is remove the stand from the outside at the hinge and someone needs to make a vesa adapter for it. I imagine the apple version is an all in one piece that mounts within the imac but that doesn’t mean you can’t fabricate a vesa plate that adapts to the stand version of the imac.

This was an outstanding geeki review. Whether to get the stand version or the VESA version is a pain in the neck, plus the extended white arm looks like it will set you back another $300-$400 Aus dollars. The iMac is a quality product but I can’t see them selling them like pancakes.

I would carefully suggest iMac is louder (it has 2 fans, mini has one but bigger). But during my usage I never was disturbed by their noise. I mean only some heavy CPU work like converting videos made them turn on the fans. Aside from that they kept silent all the time.

    Hey - Question -
I want to muse a wall mount with this setup. I plan to use a mount that is flush to the wall, meaning the space between the mount i have and the device will be about 1.5cm.
Will this be enough room for the power cord to run down the back still?
It seems like the VESA adapter apple includes on the iMac is pretty thick so it should prevent this being an issue.
Could you tell me how thick the adapter is? Meaning, how much does it stick off the back of the Mac?

    • @GeeksTable
      @GeeksTable  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think 3-5 cm gap between the VESA mount and the wall would be better. The cord coming from the adapter has to have some space to bend in case your socket is not directly in the wall.
