So for a 40 something year-old man to sleep with a girl, his child’s age who is fresh out of high school, unforgivable behavior. is consent really the only important thing when deciding if a situation is moral??? i agree with miles and rainie about the role of the dad in the story. it doesn't matter how she dressed, what her plan was, he was way older than her and he offered her alcohol which is a depressant at HIS house on the first encounter. That is concerning behaviour although it is not illegal. They both wanted to be there but we inherently understand the power imbalance: the gap in maturity, experience, strength between the two parties could have been avoided. I'm only 25 and imagining being intimate with a 19 year old is horrifying because of the age gap and how close they are to being a minor (plus overall maturity). finally on the note of consent being a deciding factor, plenty of toxic or dangerous situations contain consenting adults because there are many forms of consent including coerced consent.

    • @zerocraic3966
      @zerocraic3966 ปีที่แล้ว +25

The responsibility and blame is 100% on the grown adult but I am deeply disturbed that as a 30 year old woman and in the interim years she has jokingly publicized this story as something funny, it doesn’t seem she even now sees it as a predatory situation bc she was in her eyes the instigator.
The fact that it’s so well known that her friends are like “omg tell that HILARIOUS” story makes me worried for what this woman’s support system is. The man is completely a creep for doing this, it doesn’t matter how much Kaitlin was “baiting” him (he was an adult and a father grow up gross)
I’m sad for Kaitlin that nobody in over a decade has told her how completely unsafe and not okay she was in that situation
Plus the way she was frothing to tell the son was very troubling too. It’s clear the only way this would get to the son is her blurting it out. I wonder what would compel her to find that so necessary and frankly exciting. All her expressions of concern seemed performative compared to the enthusiasm in her tone talking about how he could find out and how she’d talk about it.
Idk about other ppl, but I don’t rehearse delicate conversations in such lighthearted and crass detail. I hope Kaitlin eventually realizes how not okay that situation was instead of laughing it off as THE FUNNIEST thing that’s ever happened to her.
she was in such a not okay situation where an older man is feeding her alcohol, that that is her go to story with new people to seem funny… I mean misunderstanding it at 19 or 22 even is one thing. She still seems so sure it wasn’t a problem at 30 that I’m worried about what else she might have brushed off as okay in her life
Edit: also I think ppl are misinterpreting wills input as him making it excusable. He’s framing why it’s understandable the guy was tempted into the wrong choice but I didn’t see it as condoning but that’s just me. Like an analogy that’s less controversial to consider is say sometimes a boss is furious with subordinates and say, screams. A boss screaming is not excusable, the human who is a boss getting impatient and wanting to scream is understandable. It doesn’t mean it isn’t the boss’s responsibility in that dynamic to do the right thing.
I see these creep encounters as the same thing. I understand why the dad was tempted but ultimately it was his failure to do the right thing that made this mess. And to do it more than once shows he didn’t seem to conflicted about it which is so gross. When I was 23 I accidentally kissed an 18 year old and I felt so creepy bc they were basically barely an adult. That he could be sexually involved w someone his own child’s age is just. So creepy.

@@zerocraic3966 okay I think feeding her alcohol may be the wrong phrasing. It was her idea to get the whisky. Don’t get me wrong, he shouldn’t have given it to her. I just think overall, he was clearly thoughtless about the consequences of sleeping with “Kaitlin” would be for his son and for her, but I don’t think there’s anything predatory about his behavior.

To insert myself in this discourse a bit late, I wouldn't automatically victimize this woman because of the shadyness of the situation. It may not be a great memory, but joking is a great way to elaborate and get over small trauma, and she seems aware both of the man's fault, but also of her own agency. It's a complex situation, and it's not by condescending and automatically victimizing young people (or in this case 30 y/o woman) that we get anywhere. People will say "young people are the future and need to take action" but then go "oh you can't make good decisions cause your prefrontal cortex etc". I liked this conversation cause they took all sides and narratives in consideration, and once they assessed the listener was aware of the problematic potential of the interaction but overall was not hurt by it (it was only a 3 times encounter sexual relationship, not an emotional or financial one, with longer term implications), joking about it like she does was a good route.

@@zerocraic3966 Having been through some sketchy situations with much older men when I was 18-21 I would like to say that it could be her way of taking back control/agency of the situation. someones gotta say it. That's not devils advocate. There is a whole SPEW of controversy over younger victim 'wanting' it even as deliberate as this. It's a way longer debate that's not wroth rehashing here but in short, people don't always know what they 'want' or think it /has/ or /should/ go a certain way because that's just how things are, and all those paths are used in full manipulation and exploited for grown men to harp on young girls.
I wouldn't call the 19 year old in this a victim per-se, but what she really wanted obviously was revenge and the boy of her class, and the spewed path and thinking she had to sleep with the dad is NOT justification for the dad to have gone through. Not going to bash them for being consenting adults all things considered LEGALLY, but morally I would never look at that man the same after undressing his son's classmate.

I am not trying to prescribe anything to the caller specifically, but anybody who thought that was a totally doable thing at 19 doesn’t become adequately embarrassed about said behavior at 30 unless they do a massive introspective period in their 20s. So why isn’t she now as an adult warning this man that his dad is a weirdo that sleeps with people his child’s age? I’d want to know that BEFORE I hear my dad was for example, hitting on people at my wedding

I vibe with this group so hard lol. The entire story of Rainie and Will talking about Miles' party is so relatable 😂 I have absolutely been both of them in those situations, especially Will getting psyched out of going to a party lol

Rainie is a better woman than me because I am very much so too chicken to even end up at a party. I am a known flaker with a capital F but it’s my generalized anxiety’s fault and lack of small talk abilities lol Random conversation starter that I have had that people have accidentally eavesdropped and joined in on is the ranch or blue cheese debate, cats or dogs? Mayo, miracle whip or neither? Lol

everything about this episode was perfection. you three have such amazing energy, comedic timing & chemistry. the party story was actually very helpful for someone like me who has been in both rainie & will's situations before. the call was a fucking rollercoaster from start to finish & that girl in my fucking hero. we love a bit of drama but also someone who is selfware & grows. we love to see it! also the confidence she has in herself is admirable & something most of us can only hope to strive for. & lastly the compliment segment hit me in all the right feels. y'all are so sweet & unabashedly sincere & i'm so thrilled that there are examples of people like you on the internet for younger peolple to see. it was also fun to learn that rainie & will knew each other before second try. we love a back story!

About the "nice shoes" line. Some incel literally wrote an article in my university's paper about 'how women don't have a sense of humor' because some women blew him off with that opening line.
I wrote a letter to the editor that ripped him a new asshole saying "know your audience, the end of the nice shoes reference is 'nice shoes, let's have sex' it's from this (site source) those ladies probably knew the reference and rightfully blew him off. Maybe if he did a Legally Blond reference, or xyz reference, he could have had a nice conversation, and something could have stemmed from that." I said some other very pointed stuff about something, didn't think much of it. Didn't think my letter would get published.
It not only got published, there was a formal retraction in the following issue.
Sorry, that bit at 13.14 just made that recovered memory pop up.
    LOVE YOU GUYS!
