    You proved they are almost identical when it comes to energy ft/pd, exactly what a ballistic chart shows for the 7.62x54R, .308 and 30-06 they are all very close. Great video thank you.

      I wouldn't lump a 30-06 in with a .308 or 7.62x54R power-wise, the 30-06 has roughly 20% more case capacity and chunks a heavier round at a higher velocity than the other two, there's a pretty decent difference in muzzle energy. But .308 and 54R _are_ damn near identical.

    to put it simply: explody brick = better energy transfer = more stopping power

    • @ViktoriousDead
      @ViktoriousDead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stopping power isn’t really a thing. Hydrostatic shock is, however. But again, it’s not stopping power, that term doesn’t even make sense.

    • @19Koty96
      @19Koty96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ViktoriousDead it's the power from transfering the kinetic energy from the projectile into the target as the projectile is slowing down and deforming. :-)

    • @ViktoriousDead
      @ViktoriousDead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      19Koty96 aside from massive rounds, most short action and even Long actions rounds don’t have that kind of effect one people, to much mass. So “stopping power” doesn’t really equate. Bullets don’t stop people in their tracks and fling them backwards because of their force. The closest thing again, would be hydrostatic shock, the force and impact the bullets causes internally due to liquid inside you. That again isn’t any sort of stopping power, just internal damage.

    • @19Koty96

    I enjoyed this. Realize it's an older video, but still I liked it. Most people would demand you talk about every little spec of the rounds and barrel length, and would be upset rather than actually enjoy a fun piece of work. Very satisfying what the .308 did. Did the same thing with my AK-47, you should compare 7.62x39 to a .308.
    The .308 might be in a whole other ball park, but that doesn't mean the rounds can't be compared. Why the Hell not haha.

      As someone who owns a mosin but not a 308 I want to say that you are false, the 7.62x54r can push heavier bullets (208 gr) which I love but if you compare 147 gr to 147 gr out of the SAME BARREL LENGTH the 308 wins, you will get about 25-2,600 fps from the x54r out of a 20 inch barrel, the .308 will get about 2800 from a 20 inch barrel, and from a 28 inch barrel like I have on my mosin I'm sure the .308 would probably be at or close to 3,000 fps but x54r only gets about 2,800

    Just shot a Mosin a bit yesterday, about 20 rounds. Pretty impressive for such an old rifle. I'm more used to my 22lr Marlin and AR in 5.56. Its quite a difference. I've shot an AR 10 in 308 about as many times. The AR 10 recoiled more, but it is lighter and we were shooting the Mosin from a sled/rest. They were both fairy accurate, but the AR 10s sights were easier to adjust to the shooter, and I much prefer the aperature sights on the AR 10 to the open type ramp on the Mosin. That said, once adjusted, I'm sure it would be accurate. I do find it entertaining the Mosin sights are factory graduated to 2000 yards, but I have trouble hitting targets at 150 yards.😂

      At 100 yards I aim about 6 to 8 inches low. 6 with M39 ( heavier rifle), 8 with Mosin. If your not use to shooting milsurp with full power loads it might take a while to tame these guys.

    Thanks for the video, dude. I know you are meaning to do these tests very seriously, but man, you gotta go beyond 200 yards, preferably 300 or more to see how rifle bullets perform. Their differences become more obvious the further you shoot from. Just like with the .30-06 vs .308, one will really start to notice the difference at 300 yards or more. Bullet weight, shape and barrel specs are also of importance when it comes to the performance. And to verify the difference, one has to repeat the test many times.

    Quick search in google immediately reveals:
    "Data in the Speer manual was developed in a Ruger Model 77 Mark II bolt action. Start and maximum charges of 1680 for a 123-grain, 0.310-inch bullet are 26.0 grains and 28.0 grains respectively. Maximum velocity is 2,544 fps."

    Muzzle velocity Light ball, ~ 865 m/s (2,838 ft/s) rifle ~ 800 m/s (2,625 ft/s) carbine."
    comparison of the cartridges from Wiki:

    11.7 g (181 gr) SP 800 m/s (2,600 ft/s) 3,744 J (2,761 ft⋅lbf)
    9.7 g (150 gr) FMJ 865 m/s (2,840 ft/s) 3,629 J (2,677 ft⋅lbf)

    0.308 Winchester:
    Bullet mass/type Velocity Energy

    150 gr (10 g) Nosler tip 2,820 ft/s (860 m/s) 2,648 ft⋅lbf (3,590 J)
    168 gr (11 g) BTHP 2,650 ft/s (810 m/s) 2,700 ft⋅lbf (3,700 J)
    175 gr (11 g) BTHP 2,645 ft/s (806 m/s) 2,619 ft⋅lbf (3,551 J)
    185 gr (12 g) Lapua Mega JSP 2,510 ft/s (770 m/s) 2,588 ft⋅lbf (3,509 J)
    - so 7.62x54R is slightly more powerful, but not by much.
    The main difference, that you actually fail to mention, is that R stands for Rimmed, while 0.308 is rimless - which is how you should be telling them apart. 7.62x54R is probably one of the last remaining rimmed cartridges, but is still doing pretty well being used by both GPMG's and sniper rifles.

    About five years ago the ballistic testing outfit called Brass Fetcher produced a video in which they shot various rounds into concrete blocks to see what would penetrate. Sheets of birch plywood behind the blocks would show any penetration. One thing to note that the blocks were sideways so there would be only two walls.
    The video sort of drags a bit, but to summarize, the rounds that did not penetrate through to the plywood were 9mm, 45ACP, 5.56, 7.62x51, 300 WSM and 12 gauge buckshot. The only significant penetration was from a 7.62x51 armor piercing round, with the huge 338 Win Mag managing a small amount of penetration. I guess the lesson is that penetrating concrete blocks is a tough task for anything.

    I Did 308 vs 54R tests for an entire summer, hundreds of tests.... Not one test, steel of every kind, wood, brick, soft targets ect did the 308 outperform the 54R... The 54R is a juggernaut and never lost on destructive power to the 308... BUT... In saying that, When I matched the 30-06 against the 54R, the results were identical to 308 vs 54R being that the 54R was now in place of the 308 in power compared to the 30-06... The 30-06 had slightly more horse power than the 54R but it was in the ball park ... As far as accuracy goes, I have no idea as my shots were at max 100 yards... This was a purely destructive test on hard and soft objects...

      Top Dog The Soviets went to the smaller 5.45x39 known as AK-74. This round had a hollow cavity between the copper tip and the core this caused extreme damage. All that stuff you have seen on the news reels the last thirty years has been the 74. Smaller is better in some cases. All bullets will tumble when they hit the lighter bullets will tumble much more and cause more damage to the human body. Why else would Soviets go smaller?

    Both are lead core bullets. With a steal core they both still perform about the same. I've unfortunately been shot at by both more times than I care to remember. That block wall you're using for cover tends to disappear quickly.

    Have you ever tried shooting different types of stairs steel? Like 304 or duplex steel? It would be interesting to see if the chrome content and the Nick content make a difference. Duplex steel like 2507 should be the strongest. 25 is the amount of chrome 25% and the 07 is the nickel content 7% .

    Its all up to the bullet.
    Bouth calibers come with the same amount of energie.
    Fmj is a bad bullet to cut concrete.
    Try some armor piercing instead.

  • @davidh9659
    @davidh9659 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cinder block for 308 had a much thicker middle wall and seemed less brittle. Also, the mosin sports a barrel that is probably around 4" longer. Plus, surplus 308 tends to be loaded to the lower end of the calibers potential, unlike a lot of 54r, and then heavier weight might help retain usable weight/momentum in stacked barriers. Speed helps mostly with metal and single/thick barriers, but accelerating target material outwards faster means loosing more momentum too. And bullet gets mangled more with higher speed.
