    Beautiful hedge! I'm amazed the undercut (finished trim) is so thick and dense, no holes or bare spots, like a solid wall of hedge. Alot of care and attention was given to this hedge. I'd like to see the other parts of that garden. Nice vid!!

    Satisfying to watch but personally I like my conifer hedges a bit 'fluffy'. People tend to cut them too hard and they end up going brown and never recover. I think they not only look nicer a little more fluffy but it also helps them keep greener.
    Thanks.

    • @RJLgardens
      @RJLgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I had to cut this 1 quite hard as it was creeping out too much, obviously being careful not to cut into old wood. Yes normally just a light prune, all depends on the hedge really and what it needs 👍

    • @mitchellkonneman
      @mitchellkonneman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you let it grow too long and eventually it will have to be pruned, yes you will never get it beautiful again! They eventually grow even taller than condominiums if you're not careful.
      Nicely trimmed by the way👍

    • @RJLgardens
      @RJLgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@mitchellkonneman Thanks 👍, and yes you're right these things need to be pruned, the reason it was so green and fluffy natural looking before cutting was because i pruned it the year before 😂

    • @kcmoguy888
      @kcmoguy888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've seen advice from gardening experts that using power hedge trimmers leaves a dense crust that restricts light and air from penetrating the outer layer. This results in a sparse interior once you get past the outer 4" or so. I use manual hedge clippers and hand pruners on my Japanese yews to avoid this effect. It is not as easy when you're dealing with such a tall hedge as shown in the video.

    • @RJLgardens

    Wow what an amazing job!
    Number one. Some people prefer listening to the rain (white noise) to relax them. Not me I LOVE watching videos like this.
    Number two. I know how hard it is to do even small shrubs. This spring I decided to give our four shrubs a little trimming. Well by the time I was finished those poor things looked horrid. It looked as if I came out in the middle of the night. Completely stoned out of my gourd on edibles and trimmed the shrubs with a gosh darn weed eater!!!

Also they are hollow in a way, had a massive one and had a cubby house through it. (Not my property). Yet we could sit inside and see them....... (I was 12) Another place on the waterfront, big tee trees, owner liked them as "people couldn't see in" I found bongs, places where kids had 'camped to do whatever.' In them. You don't see the army /police etc putting things like this so people can't see in. fwiw

      Yes but to get it looking all green fluffy and natural you have to prune it 😀, otherwise it would get overgrown and ugly.

    • @RJLgardens

      Thanks, proper pruning is very beneficial for plants as it encourages new growth and can either thicken up or thin things out if that is desired. 👍

    I absolutely love these hedges. I'm in the southern US and we never trim Leyland Cypress this way. Formal gardens aren't popular here either as most people are too frugal to afford the upkeep. I do want to ask what's up with the hard hat? I've never in 14 years of professional gardening used one.

      As you said southern US, and this is most likely in the UK. I can imagine our health and safety laws are much more strict. If working for a company doesn’t matter how confident you are you’ll be forced to wear your safety equipment.
      It’s why a lot of our tradesmen prefer private work than big sites because it tends to be a lot more relaxed.

    What do you have on your trimmer that, I guess, prevents the blade from having the clippings?

    • @RJLgardens
      @RJLgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its called a catcher plate, its primary job is for the tops of hedges, it collects the clippings as you cut so you dont have to rake/clear off afterwards. Mostly suited to the finer hedges that are trimmed regularly and kept on top of. 👍
