@@djsash2543 Laos, is the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR or LPDR), is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia.
At the heart of the Indochinese Peninsula, Laos is bordered by Myanmar and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east,
Cambodia to the southeast, and Thailand to the west and southwest.
      P. S. Laos is correct.

Probably my favorite country in SE Asia. Disclaimer: I was only in Vientiane for 1 week and luckily made a couple new foreign friends and domestic ones too so I might be bias. I happen to look like the locals too so my experience may differ. It was cleaner than I thought it would be but certain parts were very dark at night but I never felt unsafe. It was hotter than Vietnam and Cambodia, I had to stop walking every 10 minutes because that heat was boiling me alive. The bar/club scene is smaller than the other SE Asian countries but it had a really cool and fun vibe. The locals were very friendly and a decent amount of people could speak English. Be ready to visit a crap load of temples and for a person who doesn't care much for religion it was culturally an amazing experience for me. I think having met and hung out with good friends made Laos that much more enjoyable for me. BeerLaos is awesome!

I was in Laos a bit over a year ago. I was there in Dec/Jan and it was like 80F and beautiful. The COPE center is near the two big shopping malls in Vientiane. However there is also a landmine education center in Luang Prabang, just slightly away from the main old town area.

All the foreign banks are there for investment opportunities. Local Laos bank are not there as they do not have anough capital to act as one. Basically the same happens in Cambodia where the Chinese are everywhere. For example all public transport is "sponsored"by China, you see that message on the busses in Pnomh Penh for example.

In Thailand, it will be cleaned immediately after work and the place must be ready to use next.

Part of the charm of Laos as a tourist destination is that it's not Thailand! Building a shiny mall and skyscraper on every corner doesn't make it a developed country, developing an infrastructure of decent health care, and a good standard of living and social care for all does. You'll see when you go to Luang Prabang that in terms of being a tourist destination, it needs to remain as the wonderful town it already is.

Indochina is a coined term for the area being between India and China. The spelling Indochine probably comes from how Thais call China which sounds like Jeen without vibration.
French Indochina comprised Cambodia, Laos (from 1899), the Chinese territory of Guangzhouwan (from 1898 until 1945), and the Vietnamese regions of Tonkin in the north, Annam in the centre, and Cochinchina in the south. The capital for most of its history (1902-1945) was Hanoi; Saigon was the capital from 1887 to 1902 and again from 1945 to 1954.

The bombs dropped in Laos by the US were concentrated mostly in the Xiengkhuang province along the Ho Chimin trail into South Vietnam during the war. The Hmong people were the ones recruited by the US CIA to fight against the North Vietnamese intrusions. When the war ended the Hmong people were killed and prosecuted and many escaped to Thailand and resettled all over the world. It will take Laos a long time to develop the country due to lack of higher education, infrastructures and industrial resources to attract world class corporations. Also the lack of direct link to sea ports and highway systems increase expenses for doing business in Laos. Laos is in debt to China in the $B and thus many Chinese mining companies are destroying and contaminating the natural beauty of Laos.
