Nothing beats an orchestra with an amazing vocalist, doing a perfect nordic piece by one of the best composers of all time! How ever you put it, this is peak music... This is magic!
I remember watching this live with my mother and stepfather. He was usually a folk music lover but I swear he fell in love with Sissel when he saw this. Rest in peace, Olav
Im so glad to see people finding Sissel. My favourite female vocalist, none has such a clear crystalline voice. I can't listen to her renditions of Pie Jesu or O Mio Babbino Caro without crying.
Very nice reaction🤗 This is my favourite song by Edvard Grieg, and she sings it so effortlessly and beautiful 😍 She was only 22 years old in this concert 👍 She’s from the same city as I am, Bergen, and it’s the same city Aurora lives in ❤️ I remember watching her before she was famous, she sang in a choir on a tv show called “syng med oss” (sing with us). I always watched it, and I “fell in love” with her in that show😍 I don’t know if you’ve heard of our famous opera singer Solveig Kringlebotn? I sang in a choir with her when we were youths. Once we were a week in England, and I especially remember when Solveig sang “Solveigs Sang” in a cathedral, everyone in the church cried cause it was so beautiful. A moment I’ll never forget ❤️
Sissel is wearing the white version of the Bergen bunad since she is from Bergen. A bunad is a traditional Norwegian costume most often used at celebrations. Each region in Norway has its own bunad design. So you know where a woman is from by looking at the bunad patterns. Bunad's are still very popular today and especially used on our national day, May 17th.
She was Norways, sweden and Denmark Ariel... She did all 3 dubs.. She also did the titanic.. Hymn or whatever.. And some parts of the lord of the rings soundtrack
Yes, you say it correct, 'edderkopp' (spider). Thank you for your inspiring reactions to Sissel.. You can feel a part of the old Norwegian soul in this song.
Big embrace to you Valerie. I share the same fascination of Sissel, her calmness, her sweetness and her sense of inner joyfullness that fills up the space around her. My father, coming from Bergen and 50 year old choir singer, always said to me (danish): Remember that the norweigian language like italian is a singing language! It has so much melodi in its tune and the vocal letters are so open and forward in the mouth, that it facilitates singing !. Looking at your chosen clip with Sissel you a) come so close to Grieg, Bergen, norweigian mountain and valley tunes and westcoast soul and b) enriches everybody with your own interpretation, knowlegde, sweetness and feelings. Love you, Trygve
This Norwegian national romantic at the peak. Edvard Grieg kiked a lot in the mountain. The very high notes sounds very similar to how the "seterjenter" calls for the cowes. "Seter" is a mountain based summer farm where the farmer tok their animals in the summertime. This summerfarms were often run by women. Typically the called the cows, who was walking freely in the nature, back to the farm in the afternoon.
So glad you did this reaction. All the hill/mountain walking Siss did as a child pays off here. Yes, the tempo is among the slowest, so airflow demands are greater for those long lines but she has the lung capacity. In my long life I've heard 100s of Solveigs sung mostly by voices from the world of opera. However, Siss is Solveig here (30 years ago) She sang Solveig many times in her career (some on TH-cam) and her Japan performance was her most operatic, her voice pure opera. I think music snobbery & disdain from the classical world has punished Sissel. That she sings anything she likes, goes against her in some music quarters. She's not opera (thank God, there is enough) but her lyric soprano is like a balm, classical in style. Her spirituality is a bonus.
Sissel does a lovely live version of Crying in the Chapel. A couple of duets she has done are well worth a listen. Where the lost ones go, with Espen Lind. When you tell me that you love me, with Jose Carreras. I'll sing of love, with Darryl Tookes is a real favorite of mine. Many of her songs in her native language are always worth a listen. And I think a recent release she did, I rest my eyes. A lovely , with a beautiful smile who enjoys performing .
No one has done a reaction video to Siss's live version Crying in the Chapel, which is a surprise. Also likewise, her live cover of Orbison's In Dreams. Exquisite.
As every other Norwegian in the comments, I adore Sissel. She somehow manages to cross the generational gap and be adored by young and old alike. A nugget of info that's beside the musical: Her outfit in this is the bunad, the traditional folk costume that can vary a lot in apperance depending on which town or municipality you or your family is from. It's most common for the women though there are many bunads for men as well. It's a common practice for girls to inherit the bunad of their grand- or great grandmother when they are old enough to fit in it with some adjustments. Also probably a financial decision as well as a respectful one, as bunads range in price from 500-2500€ since each is sown by hand and takes around a year to make. A lot of money for an outfit most only wear once per year (constitution day, May 17th) and often in baptisms :) I couldn't tell you which version of it Sissel is wearing here, there's 450 different types currently, but since she's from Bergen it's safe to assume the design comes from that area ^^
Thank you. I always enjoy your reactions. This was in 1991. Sissel was 21/22 years old. She has sung Solveigs Song many times since, all of which are a masterpiece. After listening to 10 plus (all great) sopranos sing, I am confident in asserting that she is the best. She is so exceptionally talented that she is always naturally & masterfully effortless. She has a dimension that others do not. The last performance of this song for the public I know is when she was 50, which she seemed to have sung in Korea: th-cam.com/video/Xr5vefcd8s4/w-d-xo.html.
Great reaction, she really is something special. You must listen to her live rendition of 'Wait a While' written by John Lord of Deep Purple. He accompanied her on piano on stage. It is musical perfection.
Thank you again for a good reaction! This is really one of my favourites of her, but after Slow Down. If you want to se another side of Sissel, with a bit of vocalfry, try My tribute from 2013
No idea how I ended up here, but as a Norwegian I know better than to interrupt Sissel ❤️ You can say what you want about that song, but we consider that one to be the original, if there could be one.
You talked about translations of this song, but I'm sure you know this is the original - in the original language? From Edvard Griegs Peer Gynt suite composed for the play (Peer Gynt) by fellow Norwegian poet Henrik Ibsen. Sissel seems to be around 16-17 years old here. (?).
The original (text) would most likely be in Danish or a Norwegian form very close to Danish called Riksmål. This performance seems to use modern Norwegian. Sissel is 21 or 22 here. This was recorded in 1991 and she is born in 1969.
@@Crowly0 Norwegian with Danish spelling. It sounds Norwegian not Danish when read out - even back in the day. She was in her early 20s? Well I was wrong "the right way" when guessing a lady's age then ;-)
She would have just turned 22 during this time. King Hararald's benediction was on June 23th and Sissel is born on June 24, and I believe this was after that. She was fairly well known from around the age of 16 as she appeared on tv several times.
Thank you very much for reacting to this wonderful performance by Sissel. I enjoyed watching your reactions and opinions of her. I also hope you will be reacting to her performing gospel with a choir on "My Tribute" by Andrae Crouch.
Could you check out the band "Poets of the Fall" and their music video "Carnival of Rust" They are a very underrated rock band from Finland and my favorite band and while the song is not my favorite from them it is their most successful internationally song by a huge margin. Also the music video was chosen as the best Finnish music video ever made.
It seems like the tempo is irking you a bit? This is how it's sung here in Norway, with the wonderful contrasts between the long, sorrowful lines and the quick, hopeful ones. Makes for a more dynamic song, don't you think?
I got some videos I'd like you to react to. Some are Norwegian Christmas carols/psalms sung in Norwegian but might be interesting. Do you got an email?

I was security for Sissel during the Olympic at Lillehammer 94. She’s so good. And very charming too 😂
I think she's the best Solveig. Sissel is just a pure treasure.

She is singing Grieg, so only fitting that she is wearing the Bergensbunad since she (and i) are from the same city as Edvard Grieg :)

When she sang this song for the first time I said to myself she will be recognized as one of the best singers in the world!
Sissel was 22 years old performing this. She launched her solo album not long after this concert and has sold over 10 mill albums.
I love you commenting on her. As a Norwegian, shes a legend❤️i love Your comments🇳🇴🤩

Love your work Grandma ❤️
Great reaction, she really is something special. You must listen to her live rendition of 'Wait a While' written by John Lord of Deep Purple. He accompanied her on piano on stage. It is musical perfection.
I think her accompanist then was Per Kolstad who has been her pianist of choice over 3 decades.
Its easier to make comments than sing this song stressing her soul that makes you transport to heaven!

Please hear 'Sissel live Dec 2019. She is wearing dark blue sparkling dress. 59 min. So soothing. A mixture of songs.
She didn’t study She was known in Norway from she was a teenager.

Please consider Sissel's cover of Orbinson's In Dreams. TH-cam, to see how she what she can do with that voice to pay tribute to the Big O.
I recommend a song by Diana Navarro " sola" live in Salamanca. She is a very versatile singer with a very particular voice. She always transmits
It’s Grieg , he’s from Bergen too
Thank you! I didn't know that,

Actually Ibsen was not a big fan of Griegs music to his play. He felt it was to romantic.
