Chapeau, Sissel Kyrkjebo!
I don’t care for Sissel much. She sounds like a very young singer who only got so far in her technique. So her sound is shallow and thin, and the line is not smooth. She radiates a sweetness from her persona. But she can sing better.
Per Ibsen was a Danish poet, and this is from his long poem about Peer Gynt. He was really an ass. Solveig waited for him until they got old. When Peer came back, she still loved him. I love it. Edvard Grieg put music to this poem. It’s the best in classical music and poetry ❤
I think that's what sets her apart from others is that natural honesty in her voice. I met her the other day and she just stuns with her grace and naturalness as a person.
The best rendition of this piece, by far. It's almost ridiculous. Technical mastery aside, I've heard a lot of good versions, but Kyrkjebø _lives_ in the language and that makes all the difference. It feels personal in a way that is impossible for people who are phonetically trying to emulate the language to reproduce. ...and the sass. My God. A legendary performance.
Beautifully dressed Sissel is a dream come true. The way she sings, she breathes, all that is a miracle, a pure delight. With a great smile like Elisabeth Schwarzkopf ! She is unique. A true artist, a real musician ! A pearl in our musical world !

Ingen singer Solveigs sang som Sissel Kyrkjebø ... It seems Edvard Grieg has composed and written that song especially for her. Sissel is my favorite singer for this song ... Jeg liker så mye. Tusen takk Sissel!
Solvieg’s sang is one of the most touching song I have ever heard. I am happy to hear Sissils presentation. So soothing and emotional. Her voice is soft and clear. Without too much force and opening her wide , the sound will swirl in her mouth and then squeeze out naturally. Marvellous!

Специально прослушал эту песню в исполнении Басистюк, Нетребко и теперь Sissel Kyrkjebo. Сисель лучшая, это её песня. Естественно, это моё личное мнение
Last August I was in Oslo and visited the Henrik Ibsen museum. I learned there that Ibsen wrote the play Peer Gynt, and Grieg, somewhat reluctantly, wrote music to that play. I was a fan of the music of Peer Gynt and Grieg for a long time, but never knew the play by Ibsen. One is never too old to learn... 😉. Anyway, I stumbled upon this performance of Solveigs song, sung by Sissel, and what can I say: history, musicality, talent and beauty came clashing together 💖
I came to this beautiful girl and voice ,after reading the book "The storm sister" by Lucinda Riley, that tells the amasing story of the first Solveig that performed this beautiful song in the Kristianateatern in Norway 1876.
@@lavenderlane9113 yes... an amazing series. And sadly, Lucinda Riley passed before she could finish the series, but her son completed it for her. Now, that's a series, Netflix needs to pick up!
She has an amazing ability to present the song as if she were Solveig singing prayerfully and wistfully for the prodigal Peer. She carries the fullness of the note/pitch without overpowering it with forte/fortissimo.I’ll have to re-read Ibsen’s rendition of the story, but as I recall, Solveig’s song is sung twice: when Peer leaves the village, and when he returns, with hope against expectation, and collapses in contrition and exhaustion onto Solveig’s lap. Solveig’s song is the key to interpreting Peer’s real identity and purpose despite his misguided adventures and misguided worldly successes (and excesses). I can almost see Solveig singing her song with soft, forgiving, unshakable grace as Peer falls asleep on her lap at the close of the story. Sissel’s presentation here seems to capture this masterful closure with such tranquility and assurance...
Takes me back almost 70 years to my first day at school. The school had few resources, but it did have a radio. And this was some of the music we listened to. This version is unimaginably beautiful...... Thank you.
The only day I attended assembly in our secondary school was Thursdays, when the deputy head would play classical music. This and Anitra's dance were my favourites and Peer Gynt was the first record that I bought (at 13) when dad bought a 'stereogram'
Besides being absolutely stellar at what she does, she also knows the language and it carries through the preformance. I've heard other fantastic sopranoes do the piece and, as a Norwegian myself, I can hear that they are just mimicing the sounds rather than singing the song. This just takes it to another level.
mizzothify mizzothifi And many times better than some of the strained and strangulated divas who attempt to sing this. Voice training cannot produce good singers, only inate talent can do this.
@@dougswann3805 Yes exactly. You can see that typical operatic style can overwhelm pieces like this,....typical operatic acting also. Barbara Steisand does a surprisingly moving version of the Lascia chia Pianga ( excuse spelling) from Rinaldo, Handel. Don't tell anyone.

Sissel's voice from this periode makes all words inadequate. Before her voice had professional voice coaching which took away the unique purity and clarity and unparalleled pitch. The way she sings here is sublime. Breathtaking. And completely natural. I'm so happy these recordings exist.
I agree that this is the best version of the song and Sissel is the best singer for the song. I also adore Anna Netrebko's and Barbary Bonney's version as well.
I do think Sissels clear voice fits the innocent character of Solveig much better. It also fits more the overall feel of the story and scenes, which take place in a northern village, not an urban opera house where people worked on their voices for years. She sounds very natural here.
One might say that Sissel's rendition is earthly perfection, while Marita's is heavenly perfection. Both are excellent, and one's taste will dictate their preference.

All day long the tune was playing in my head so when I heard Sissal sing it here, and understood the words, I understood why I had been directed to it. The music is sad, happy hopeful passionate and finally serene. Wow!
Our relatives brought us a cassette of Sissel’s first album, a collection of Christmas songs, in about 1985. I was in Norway in 1990-1991to study and serendipitously was able to catch her performing in Bergen. We also saw her near our home when she performed in Seattle in 2004. She is still quite young here and not at her peak but this is a breathtaking performance. In hindsight stunning, really, because she was already amazing but continued to diligently develop her voice and stage presence. What a treasure to see someone so gifted not take it for granted but work hard to improve. Tussen takk!

Dear friend Sue. It is the lyrics. Please, enjoy the beautiful poem. Solveig's Song Perhaps there will go both winter and spring, And next summer also and the whole year, But onetime you will come, I know this for sure, And I shall surely wait for I promised that last. This is tearfully beautiful! No better version. So simple. I believe the great opera sopranos who sing this, over-sing it. There is something more charming in this effortless delivery that sustains the emotion quality! I long to be on a mountain top with Sissel - She’s an angel.
I had to search for this song after reading a book by Domingo Villar, “Death on a Galician Shore” and one of the characters in the story, always whistled this song…now after hearing it and this lady’s performance, I am mesmerized it is such a sublime beautiful melody and extraordinary voice..

A voice to simply make you dissolve into the floor with it's beauty and clarity. I'd never heard her before and I hope it's not the last time.
That would be sad indeed, but with the help of TH-cam and the recording industry, you should be enjoying Sissel for years to come!
absolutely
you should hear her sing 'Goin' home'. TDF!
She is the best. There is no other. Heard her twice in Bergen. God be with you Sissel.
My favorite musician in the world. I found Ms. Kyrkjebø’s CD “Glade Jul” in “The Nordic Nook,” in Clifton, TX in 1999, and I’ve been an awed, hypnotized, and faithful fan since then.
Only she has sung me to sleep more than my mama❤
I am so grateful she shared her voice with me.
Truly beautiful and I don’t understand a word of it, but her voice and then the melody are outstanding
She sings for the Royal family of Norway, right there 😊😊😊
It’s not so easy to hear the lyrics even as a Norwegian. She sings it beautifully
you can enable subtitle to get more out of the listening.
Dear friend Sue. It is the lyrics. Please, enjoy the beautiful poem.
Solveig's Song
Perhaps there will go both winter and spring,
And next summer also and the whole year,
But onetime you will come, I know this for sure,
And I shall surely wait for I promised that last.
God strengthen you where you go in the world,
God give you joy if you before his footstool stand,
Here shall I wait until you come again,
And if you wait above, we'll meet there again, my friend!

If you set English subtitles, you will hear similaity between Norwegian and English.
Sissel sang almost effortless! and she is beautiful too
A voice, a face, and a song to die for!
That note A5
Føler den
This is tearfully beautiful! No better version. So simple. I believe the great opera sopranos who sing this, over-sing it. There is something more charming in this effortless delivery that sustains the emotion quality!
I long to be on a mountain top with Sissel -
She’s an angel.
I've watched this 100's of times and that final note gets me every time. Absolutely stunning!
same here...
I always cry like a baby when I hear her sing this song.
I had to search for this song after reading a book by Domingo Villar, “Death on a Galician Shore” and one of the characters in the story, always whistled this song…now after hearing it and this lady’s performance, I am mesmerized it is such a sublime beautiful melody and extraordinary voice..
That comment gave me goosebumps.
Sublime !
Most Beautiful Song 😊 Sensationelle Performance 🥇 Wahrlich einfach Göttliches Talent and Voices 🗣️ 💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝☝️
Григ-великий композитор. И, исполнение Сесиль, просто, потрясающее.
Мало, что так радует в этом сумасшедшем мире....
Un ravissement!Merci
She has a one of a kind amazing voice and she makes it look easy.
I've never ever heard this song sung so beautifully.
It was so thoughtful to include the lyrics in English, was greatly added to the pleasure of this magnificent song.
A true delight. Thank you so much
Chris. UK
It is sung on the Original language, Bergens dialekt. Sissel is also from Bergen
@@sveingeraldhansen7275 Stolt av å vokse opp i Bergen som Sissel :)

Jeg har dessvære aldri vært i Bergen,
Sissel har den fineste opera stemmen jeg
har hørt. Jeg lytter ofte til Sissel.
@@sveingeraldhansen7275 Jeg har begynt å høre på henne og, min far anbefalte henne. Eg liker spesielt ‘Til Ungdommen’, ‘Det lysner i stille grener’, ‘Deilig er jorden og ‘Nå tennes tusen julelys.’
Hilsener fra Bergen 🇳🇴
