As a wise man once said: "Twitter is the only place where well-articulated sentences still get misinterpreted. You can say 'I like pancakes' and somebody will say 'So you hate waffles?'"
So true. I was on Twitter the other day and a girl twitted that she took out her wisdom teeth and her father bought her a ton of ice cream. And suddenly all world problems were here fault cause (1) she had a father who did a nice thing for her and (2) it was an expensive ice cream brand so they are rich supervillains.
I was obsessed with twitter, I quit 3 weeks ago after I lost track of time on there and forgot to submit a whole lab report. Also, my feed on twitter would determine my mood for the day, I would be irritated at 7am. I couldn’t hear myself think, all my opinions were stuff I agreed with on twitter, basically other people’s opinion. I knew so much about everything but couldn’t elaborate on anything .I miss watching things unfolding though but If it’s that important, I’ll hear about it. Now, TH-cam is my next beast
At least Reddit and TH-cam allow you to go in depth on a particular subject and develop a real understanding of it whereas Twitter gives you a short glimpse into the intricacies of something and doesn't allow anyone to elaborate. People developing their views of the world through Twitter is terrifying, even more so than any other social media. I have discussions on Reddit where we write PARAGRAPHS of stuff and cite sources, in the end we both get like 10 upvotes each but I've learned something I can take with me but that's just when I'm discussing pharmacology, biochemistry and health optimization.
My initial impression of Twitter was “I don’t get it and I don’t like it” and I deleted my account a few months later. I feel like I did something good for myself in that knee-jerk reaction.
Same, except I log in every once and a while to shout at a company who's support channel has broken down. But then I never remember to log back in and see what their response was so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I did the same thing a dozen years ago. I felt too old to get it before I was even 30. It is weird to hear about people 40 years older than me who tweet regularly. So I'm guessing it wasn't about age, but just not belonging in the first place.
I never even got as far as creating an account. When it came out, it just sounded so weird and I could not understand why I would want such a thing. Nearly fifteen years later, I'm so glad I never got started with it.
I don't like twitter but I don't have many friends and it's kind of my only opportunity to be social, so I'm stuck in a feedback loop where twitter further isolates me, causing me to be more dependent on it for my social needs, which means I use more twitter, which isolates, etc. Also sometimes there are funny memes and it often feels like being directly wired into the pulse of global communication. Like listening to the town gossip on a global scale
I’m not on twitter, but have the same experience with instagram. I’ve started tuning into how my feed makes me feel. I’ve muted the folks that irk me and cultivated a feed that lifts my spirits. Bonus… it only takes 10 minutes a day to catch up. Sometimes I still keep scrolling, but far less.
I've read some of your past newsletters and signed up, and I have to say I really appreciate that you're not just making it into a marketing opportunity for your latest videos. That's there too, of course, but you give us something worth our time. That's awesome.
THANK YOU for mentioning lists. I feel like only a minority of Twitter users use the lists. I have a shit ton and those lists can heavily impact what kind of a mood I will be in on twitter. I have my news lists for the news which is basically just journalists I follow. not to bad. Then I have a youtube/shitposter list which can be funny and angry. If these things (among others) piss me off I have a fun and interesting list which is art and funny stuff. If things are REALLY bad I have my capybara, opossum, and cat list.
I had to immediately pause and comment on that stock footage before the 1-minute mark of a knife-wielding angry computer user. Fantastic. I hope he got paid well for that shoot. Resuming video!
Love the videos. I dropped social media a year ago in about three weeks when my son was born. Was great though TH-cam has picked up some of the slack... Including your channel so that's a bonus
I am almost 70 years old and for the life of me, I cannot figure out how Twitter works or why I should care. My brother-in-law, a retired journalist, tells me it is where news breaks first, but I can wait a few minutes until it shows up on the Washington Post website. But, like I said, I am old.
I'm in my mid 30s and never understood the draw of Twitter but maybe it's because I'm a millennial and was more of a MySpace and Facebook person until MySpace went away and Facebook became so insufferable that I just deleted it. Absolutely no reason to get a Twitter account now. My Google Now feed gives me push notifications not long after news breaks so yeah, no need to know things the very second they drop. I can wait 30 minutes and at least the article will hopefully give surrounding context and not just be 2 sentences from an unverified source on Twitter.
@@brett84c Twitter used to be more than unverified sources. It used to be a place for different takes/voices. Now they just censor like most of the social media do. It used to be valuable, now it's the same as wapo & co.
I’ve aged out of Facebook, and I’m old!! But not as old as a boomer. I just can’t even. Twitter is mean. Facebook is people you know, but have nothing in common. Reddit is people you don’t know, but have similar interests. Love Reddit.
I’ve tried twitter a couple of times but just didn’t do it for me. Tend to not be on social media a whole bunch. Have a hard enough time just keeping up with my life. Don’t need to put it out there and have people yelling at me that I’m doing it wrong. I’ve posted things in the past on other social media platforms and got berated over very minuscule details that people don’t agree with. I tend to try to put positives vibes out there and block the negative.
I view Twitter almost exclusively through lists. Tl;dr: lists, the block/mute buttons, and small private communities are the way forwards. Technically I have 3 accounts (and have had 2 others) but 1) they’re all private, 2) the “main” one with my IRL friends, I almost never use anymore, really I only keep it to keep up with certain friends without having to actively message them, 3) the actual main one I have 0 followers, I follow 0 people, I tweet into the void where only I can see (I realised the IRL friends not seeing my bad days/not caring hurt more than me just tweeting knowing it can’t be seen), and I use pinned lists to view only what I want to view on a specific topic at a given time. I follow various topics and search indirects and have over 4000 accounts blocked and block any tweeting stuff I simply don’t want to see in my topics/searches along with every single sponsored tweet. 3) the 3rd one is a small private community mostly active at certain times for certain events. I deactivate overnight or even for a couple of weeks at a time, it somehow feels like less FOMO than just logging out even though the other people are there and tweeting all the same. I also rarely keep any tweets up there for more than a day or 2, all tweets are deleted. I met by best friend through Twitter over 10 years ago when it was a very different place. I’m not sure I’d make long term IRL friends there now but I still like the sense of community you can get when you handle it properly and block out the toxicity. The private accounts mean I never reply to celebs, creators, randoms, anyone I don’t know. Admittedly finding and getting into/starting a private community is very difficult and you might need to start out public with random replies for that but once you settle down into a handful of people you like, you’re good.
I live in L.A., and when there is an earthquake, or other seeming catastrophe, I immediately go to Twitter. I also like it for news in real time. But I do hate the arguments.
