    I love the dry and snappy dialogue you guys have - it has a beautiful back and forth natural rhythm. It is also so natural that you can talk for 2 hours and maintain a wonderful energy that demonstrates a zest for life and for each other. Never boring and always an adventure - keep it up - it is inspiring.

      I agreeee... when people elevate their volume and talk over each other is a subtle pet peeve of mine. Not the case here.
      Staying grounded and genuine in yourself and inviting interest in others will open your conversations for enjoyment beyond longing. Way better than slightly flexing egos (not always in a completely selfish way) and way better than trying to regurgitate the same party conversations that make you look cool and feel falsely uplifted in yourself.
      Stay genuine and try to notice the energy you're putting out... and the energy of others. That's how I found my soul mate! That's my best advice for anyone reading.

      Yes! I'm an occupational therapist in a return to work/mental health setting. Parents who aren't with their kids all day (who can go to work, see friends due to having consistent access to babysitter or childcare) have a much easier time with it all. It's a lot to be with kid(s) at home all day without other adult support. Literally non stop work.

    I’m a MA and was a hairdresser for 30 years, went into home health and now I’m an MA. Highly recommend and it’s great no weekends, no holidays, no nights.

      I have toyed with the idea of becoming an MA. I'm currently a pharmacist and I'm kind of massively burnt out on it for a lot of reasons. I'm not in a position to change careers yet, but it would at least be nice to know what I'd maybe like to do next so I could prepare for it someday. MA was one thing I thought I would probably be good at but would have, yes, a much nicer schedule than retail pharmacy.

    I have autism and I struggle a lot with social anxiety and talking to people, strangers especially is hard, so maybe this method could be helpful. I still don't know how to really approach strangers though, like how do you just make new friends, new relationships?

    • @MarriedMule
      @MarriedMule 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's no one size fits all solution, just like there's no singular level of being on the spectrum. You have to find what works for you, as scary as it can be. I find saying hi and asking how they're doing is a good way to start getting used to talking to strangers. Sometimes they'll be grumpy or annoyed but that's just something you'll deal with now and then, don't take it personally or like they're bad. Greet them and ask how they are when you see them, and it will sometimes naturally progress to talking more, but never try to force change.

    • @dianaadamo5574
      @dianaadamo5574 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Like the previous comment, I normally go up and introduce myself (hi, I'm diana. And you are?), And then ask a question related to the current setting. At a party, "how do you know (the host)". At a bookclub, "what did you think of X?". At an anime club, "so how did you get into anime?" Then you can normally find some common ground and start a conversation. Especially in club settings, making a little bit of centered small talk after a couple of meetings can get you guys comfortable enough to start asking more personal questions. In a party, normally socialization is the goal, so you can open with the FORD more directly. Also, if you're young, asking if they have any pets is a great alternative to "family" because people that have pets love to talk about them and people that don't like pets are sus lol

      I think I'm neurotypical, so take my advice with a grain of salt because it may not be what you are looking for. I like to sign up for a weekly class in a hobby I want to start and just commit. Go to that class for years. During the class (ex art class or a dance class) there often arise small moments of bonding and with lots of time and patience those moments start to add up. After a month or so, I'll start to arrive a few minutes early or stay a few minutes late and have short "small talk" with other people. My problem is that I don't know how to take it past acquaintanceship, my guess is by inviting a few people to hang out after class at a nearby coffee shop? Or grabbing some food after? After you initiate an after class hang out, then wait and see if others do the same eventually? Then from there it really is a mystery to me. I just take comfort in reminding myself that more people than I realize are lonely just like me, they just hide it well so I don't realize it. Here's to us both developing new friendships over the next few years, you got this!

    • @SaccharineCHNOS
      @SaccharineCHNOS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      A lot is repetition i my experience as a person that is done with school and does't have a big workplace and things like that, pick a place/hobby to show up to at least once a week, be nice, and generally you will start to make friends. So it's a great reason to start a hobby. Mine was Latin dance but it could be anything! Farmer's market, free casual sports league, arts and crafts groups, etc. It takes hour and hours of face time to make new friends

    • @thenopedetective
      @thenopedetective 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@SaccharineCHNOS yes! Research shows that a lot of friendships just come out of proximity. Partially why kids make friends with the person who sits beside them and why a lot of adults find it harder to make friends (in relatively independent workplaces). As adults, without pre-existing friends or clubs/hobby groups it's quite hard! So step 1 can sometimes just be finding a social activity group (sport, exercise class, book club, hiking group, meetup) and being around people for a month or so on a weekly basis before starting small talk. Can help observe how others interact and see if there are any pre-existing group dynamics.

    This is great. The version of this I use when I meet another person with autism is something like O.R.C: Occupation, Recreation, Common Interests.
    The goal of the first two is to narrow down the third.
    I wonder how the progression of F.O.R.D is meant to work, and what do you do once you reach the Dreams part of it? Do you come up with suggestions as to how the person might achieve their dreams, or?

    • @MrFillzor
      @MrFillzor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      From what I've observed, most people just want to daydream about their dreams
      It's as if just talking about your dreams is as fun as actually achieving them (possibly even more, since it requires no work and you can just let your imagination go wild)
      Trying to give people suggestions is not necessarily terrible, but I could see some people getting offended because, when faced with concrete actions they might have to take in order to achieve anything, it would extinguish the fun of just imagining things
      ...or maybe it's just my coworkers that are like that lmao

      @@MrFillzor I would agree with your assessment. Whenever my husband and I talk about something he might want to do as a career and I explain the school or other steps he would have to take to get there, it ruins the idea for him and he isn’t interested in it anymore. Most likely he will be a stay-at-home dad when we have kids and maybe work part time/ do something that can be easily done from home and doesn’t require a lot of time. The big dreams are more wistful ponderings and not really concrete actionable things he plans or even really wants to do.

    Chyna: You like people, you are a good planner, you like a lot of tasks, you should be a project manager. It's good money, at least in the IT space, and there a lots of work from home jobs now. There are certifications you can get to do this. You could start somewhere really small or even volunteer to get some experience to get into the field. Whatever you do eventually, you'll be great.
