I first watched this video about a year ago and I was moved. I decided not to leave any comment straight away because I thought my mind was clouded by the improvisation. A year on and after many listening with or without the visual, I still love it. He has left his mark and whether the majority likes this mark or not is irrelevant no more. To me, that's what art is about.
This is perfect, what it was meant to be. He plays freely, no inhibition. Technique astounding, no limits. Best I have ever seen. This has nothing to do with "crazy", in fact it's crazy to play this with inhibitions.

Watched him when he was 11 years in Poland (?) for a Competition of sorts, where the Audience applaused with him returning 7 or 8 times, never abating till he played Bach's 'Chaconne' (so called for guitar at least) and it was perfect. At eleven, at that. Amazing performance.

its amazing how he is able to just not give a damn and be himself in the world of classical music which is full of conservative and purist people, even when it comes to perform gypsy influenced monti composition...... bravo
He's really incredible!!! He played the Friss twice as the normal speed!! Twice!!! Only in 30s and without a single note or beat wrong!!! And it's not for show off, he fully embeds his technique into the enthusiasm.
I don't care about his "deviation" from the score, his every improvization was authentically derived from the score. Simply put, he plays how the orginal composer would have re-written the piece.
He might be very annoying for many among the classical audiences , but nevertheless one who is true with his or hers instinct should be able to recognize a true remarkable talent and someone who is able to take grant risks and be successful. Hats off !
I don't care if he is insane or prodigy. I don't mind how many offences he has committed against the rules of the game. I only feel whether the music he brings out could impress and/or inspire me. I am so tired of the predominated uniform violinists from those famous academies. I have longed for some new violinists able to identify and show off their own personality just like all of the past romantic violinists did. Li is exactly one of this kind. Besides, his skill is Heifetz grade or above...
i do agree with you that His playing is at Hiefetz grade or above but i think that he possesses a different quality of musical expression than Hiefetz did (not saying that what Heifetz did is wrong but Li is just different from other violinists) but what do you think?
In fact, No One plays Czardas like Chuan Yun Li. He is the one Monti 'wrote for' not knowing it. Everyone, the world over, has played this beautiful Piece on every make of Instrument. Chuan Yun's version is by far the most listened to, correct me if I am wrong.
