This is by far the most interesting Tchaikovsky VC ever posted in TH-cam due to its improvisation. I can say almost my favorite among the many original. We need to petition him to doing concert again. Whatever he playing I will listen! #saveLiChuanYun
Everyone, pay attention to his handling of the cadenza! No less than any other composer! And although this kind of improvisational performance is wild and unrestrained, it does not deviate from the main melody, that is, it does not go off-topic, and it is integrated! After listening to it, I feel a sense of release and relief!
He is telling a story. once upon a time, there was a loving father and his son living a happy life. But the enemy came and destroyed everything, father tries everything to protect his son and finally gave his own life. The war ends and the story is still being told so the world remembers the beauty exists in cruel war.
This guy is brilliant and because he does not stick to the original piece and does deviate , he is not like by some snobbish connoisseurs of classical music . Amazing violinist as good as anyone , bloody effortless
Besides his mental issues, it is well known that he improvises during concerts. He even played differently in every rehearsal. Don't ever expect him to follow the score completely.
He is the violin's phenomenon... he is technic is unavailable. He can be compared with the greatest. Look at 7:13 he can play the First Violin Orchestra Part.. This is from another Planet!!!
If you listen to no other section, from 18:01 to the end of the movement is not to be missed. Mere words cannot possibly do justice to adequately describe what is going on here.....must be heard (and preferably seen) to be fully appreciated. wow.....just, wow. .....you're welcome.
8:13 gives me chills!!!!!!!!!!! This particular part of the first movement is one of my favorite melodies in the violin repertoire. I feel this is a part that many violinists add their own interpretation and flavor. In this part, I find Li’s phrasing and tempo to be just right. Although I’m very much a fan of Li’s embellishments, I find that in this very instance less definitely is more. He played it perfectly right for my ears.
I hear Perlman’s (Mr. Li’s teacher) influence here but I feel Mr. Li plays the 1 st movement better than anyone I’ve heard. I wish TH-cam had the whole concerto.
its so rare to see Li now. Hope he is doing fine. In my humble opinion, his tchaikovsky is the best. Although i can't agree with all of his improvisations, i haven't heard music flows in the way his does from any other violinists. literally.
Mr. 李传韵 seems to be a so much "bigger" personality than his small violin and is constantly seeking the best through his playing. A true musician indeed who is constantly seeking and searching the soul of his own music he hears inside him....a true poet who is never satifsfied.....he does no care about the exact notes but wants to express his own, which is very difficult in classical music where notes , style, composers' demands ...as a result,.he plays "his own Tchaikovsky" and it is brilliant !...
I agree with you. The true goal of ART is to freely express yourself by painting, musical instrument, or whatever approaches you are good at. Mr. Li is the TRUE artist who has reached far above technique level to seek his soul in his violin.
I can't say this performance satisfies all my taste, but it is certainly an unorthodox and interesting one! Li is a great violinist that stands out from the crowd with his brilliant techniques, unique interpretation and wow, unmatched passion! I had the opportunity to listen to his Sibelius Violin Concerto in live, and I think that piece is a better match for his style. Wish there is a recording of that.
taking his personal adaptation of Tchaikovski's score for granted he really is an amazing musician, incredible technique for sure, would love to hear him playing his rendition of Milstein's Paganiniana 😃

Most masters like Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven improvised during cadenza, Li is the only one in our generation that inherited that capability. Others are all stick to the notes.
A brilliant, extremely talented violinist. He could be a most sought after violinist. A pity is that he appears does not bound by conventional habits and customary boundaries. Whether it is right or wrong is debatable. If his parents or earlier year teachers would taught him some those commonly/customarily observed behavior and boundaries. He may very well be one of most sought after violinists.
I'd love to hear what new tricks he puts in the 3rd movement... that would be something to see. Edit - just found a recording. But either it wasn't live and he wasn't interested in showing off, or he just went for the boring approach anyway, because it followed the score to the letter.
Sean Brown lol that 3rd movement recording probably is one of his most decent playing in his life, because that was a recording for the movie "Together" so he has to stick onto the scores
Li: Hi boss, how would you like me to play this music? The conductor: you follow the lines and play in front of me. Li: that’s boring, I cannot do that The conductor: ….
I dare to think differently - considering that the title of the video should be rather "Chuanyun Li's Variations on Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto" and his constant erratic changes in tempo, I think the lady did an enormously great job in keeping the whole thing together, and in fact, the best female conductor I have seen so far (maybe I have seen to few (because there are so few?)). All the others I have seen look like they are trying to fly, whilst this woman is actually using her hands to lead the orchestra, and she is mostly using them independently (wow). And 4:18 was not the worst moment even.

The best of the best I ever heard, Bravel!❤
