    OMG I'm zone 9b! I LOVE when people actually have my zone! It gives me so many ideas!
    Also I'm going with the cool tones too! I don't have armadillo problems so I'm planting a climbing rose over my archways and that's where I'm going to get my big pink and yellow fixes from. 😊
    Really really beautiful! I love absolutely everything you've done

      Thanks, Cindy!!! That's what I love about it too! It would be sad if it was just a bunch of pretty plants. I want to see all the little creatures enjoying the garden, except for the army worms and snails. LOL!

    • @gulfcoastbutterflygardening
      @gulfcoastbutterflygardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Jill!!! Aren't the little creatures that are drawn to the garden so entertaining. I wish I could crouch down low in the garden for hours and watch insects for hours like I used to do as a kid! But everything starts protesting and creaking when I stand up these days. I love being able to video things that zoom in later to really see what's going on! So much delightfulness!!!!

      Why do you have most of your plants in pots?

    • @gulfcoastbutterflygardening
      @gulfcoastbutterflygardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@monahudson9501 I am plagued by armadillos. They dig everything up and throw the plants aside for the grubs and ants. I’ve embraced my fate and almost exclusively grow n containers. There are a few things that have managed to survive in the ground, but I never count on them to be left alone for long! LOL!

    I love the color of your house. It’s a beautiful, soft color and complements your landscape
    Amazing that you can keep lavender alive in our hot muggy zone nine.! I see your dusty Miller is getting quite large. It looks beautiful next to that pale pink rose. have you thought about trying salvia purple spires planted next to salvia blue ice? That’s a really great combination.
    Lucky you, I don’t get many hummingbirds at my in my zone nine garden.

    • @gulfcoastbutterflygardening
      @gulfcoastbutterflygardening  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Cheryl!!! Oh, the lavender is barely make it now. It’s a bummer! - I’ve never seen salvia blue ice for sale! I will have to look for it next spring! I bet that IS gorgeous!!! And that sounds like a lovely combination! - It seems like we get a flurry of hummingbird activity in early spring and then again in the fall around October. I hope you will get some this year!!! I hope you are having an awesome 4th of July 🗽🇺🇸🍔⛱️❤️🎉🎇🦋☀️🌼🌿🐛

    Hi Rachel. Well, your garden and your photography are just amazing. I never tire of watching your videos and witnessing the spectacular changes from one week to the next. Here, everything is progressing slowly but surely, it may be at the same stage as yours at the beginning of August, depending on weather conditions. Everywhere is green and lush, the spring flowers are just finishing, the apple and cherry blossom is the star of the show. There are a lot of plants waiting, under cover to be planted. I've sown, corgette, corn and butternut seeds and My dahlias are waking up at last. Gardening here is an adventure, we can never take things for granted 😅, but what a pleasure it all is ❤. Many thanks for sharing Rachel and have a great week 😀

And yay about you finally getting to wake up your dahlias!!!!!!! I hope you have been having a very blessed and happy and fulfilling gardening week!!!

    Your garden amazes me every week! I love it so much! I've been purchasing more plants but have been too busy helping our daughter to move into her apartment these past few days. I hope to do a lot of planting this coming week. The wind needs to calm down. I bought a gardenia, dwarf butterfly bush, purple coneflowers, white butterfly penta, a 'color wheel' perennial, vincas... Plus coleus and caladiums. 😃🥰🌸💐🐛🦋🙋‍♀️

      Oh, Tammy!!! It sounds like you are going to be filling your garden with so many lovelies!!!! I didn't know what "color wheel" perennial was, so I looked it up. Is it sort of like Stoke's aster? That's what I found, at least. LOL about the wind needing to calm down! Yes! We had some gusts too, but thankfully it does seem to have died down...for now. I hope you've had lots of time AND energy to plant all of your goodies this week!!! Full steam ahead!!!

They were tired of the heat. Lol I was so excited to see what you did with all the pots. That’s all I can do because we live in the woods. I struggle with getting them enough sun. It’s been so wet that I’ve lost plants especially my lavender. Seeds have been completely washed away. Those were in a bed for wildflowers that I made. I have a long way to go. Each Sunday, your garden grows more beautiful than ever. Love how you tell your plants they are beautiful, gorgeous, and amazing. I feel sure this is why they grow and bloom so beautifully. Are you a teacher and/or an artist? I am curious because of your mannerisms, choice of words, and artistic expressions. The combination of your voice and the beautiful garden has the most calming effect. Maybe doctors should prescribe watching your video when stressed instead of a pill (Chuckle).

Whenever I am not feeling well and if I am able, I will amble around in the garden and being out there really does take my mind off of being in pain. It is very healing to be outside and amongst nature with the fresh air and the birdsong to buoy your spirits! And also when I'm out there I'm thanking God for all that He has made and for how awesome He is! - LOL! I'm neither a teacher or an artist, but my mom is an artist! Thanks for thinking that I was! Hey there from Texas,
    This sweet video popped up in my feed, I’m sooo thankful it did.
    I instantly could tell that you’re a kindhearted and joyous lady. I already liked and subscribed and I haven’t finished the video yet.
    🙂🙂🙂
    I forget that armadillo live elsewhere. Thankfully they’ve not crossed my path on foot or near my car, they must prefer a more rural area than I live in.
    I can’t imagine seeing them chomp down on your pretty flowers.
    😉😉😉
    I’m thrilled that you’re growing my state flower!!!
    I love the fact that they’re two toned, blue-ish purple with white tops. Sooo lovely to see them growing in mass along the back roads and out in open fields.
    Sadly they’re mostly seen in north and eastern Texas and not state wide, but that’s ok. To see them in places is better than none, right!?!?
    I will be very interested to see the progress of the chrysalis.
    I didn’t know that they change the color of their cocoons to disguise their appearance. Isn’t it amazing how God gives such a vast amount of knowledge, to even the tiniest of living things.
    🙏🏻🦋🙏🏻
    I love how you gave thanks to our Heavenly Father for providing the blessed rain, for your garden. Sadly too many people take the credit for themselves, or give the glory to the creation (mother earth) and not The Creator…
    Anyway, I just wanted to chime in and say “Hello”, and to thank you for sharing your lovely garden, along with your faith and acknowledgement of *The One* who created it all.
    🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
    Have a wonderful week ahead.
    Take care, and God bless

    Your seating area is so beautiful! I just love it. And that lavender looks SO GOOD. The whole entranceway into the garden is so full and fabulous. You must be so happy with how that looks. Honestly! Love that spot of pink. And that diamond frost and verbena is a perfect combo for sure.
    I am so impressed with your hydrangeas! You are the master.
    You are going to love that dwarf Joe Pye weed. I think it is one of my new favorite things.
    The pathway looks great!
    I am absolutely dying over the queen of Sweden rose. Perfection! That tapestry in front of the fountain is so dreamy.
    Lol I was just shaking the coral nymph salvia seeds in bare spots this morning.
    Oooh! That native petunia! And your dahlias!!!!!!! **swoon**
    The sunflower is cracking me up.
    I can’t wait to see your topiary adventure. I’m trying my best with that olive tree, but it’s looking pretty sketchy so far. Lol
    I do love your bog garden. So cool!
    The bluebonnets look good! I can NOT get over the kale. So big. My copycat kale is not happy where I put it. I think yours looks awesome dotted around the yard.
    I had a black swallowtail do the same thing. He ignored all my sticks, and made his chrysalis on the fennel stem. Good grief. 🤦🏼‍♀️
    Ok that dirt dauber is insane. I’m so glad you got that video of him!
    The garden is so glorious. Like a symphony!

      Thank you, Jo!!!!!!! You are the sweetest!!! I don’t know why the hydrangeas are looking so good because they never have before! They’ve been ugly, scraggly things that were just barely hanging on by a few roots that the armadillos didn’t dig up AND they were also covered in brown spots. Either they got their act together because I threatened to dig them up and plunk them into the front yard or they really didn’t like having the lemon tree looming over them.
      Oh!!! I must have missed it when you talked about making the olive tree be a topiary! That will be lovely!!!!! I’m sure that you will shape it into a masterpiece!!!
      Aren’t swallowtails just the most ornery of the butterfly world?!? They really are not cooperative as caterpillars or butterflies! Ugh!

    And you are right about bees loving tiny blooms. Native hydrangeas have many tiny flowers in their blossoms and the bees love them for nectar. Unfortunately, growers have cultivated the blossoms to have more large flowers and few tiny flowers. The bees don't get much food from those.

    Your garden is so beautiful. When you plant in pots Do you just sprinkle the whole seed packet in the large pots? And if they’re annuals do you save the seeds for the next year? Thank you, Connie!!! I have sprinkled seeds i to my pots before and almost all of the coral nymph salvia that I have right now self-seeded into the pots. I love how it does that! - I did start seeds in the little trays and then potted them up and then added them to my big pots. I’ve tried all different kinds of ways to grow in containers. - I do save seeds from things like my Thai basil and agastache and coral nymph salvia. Some years I’ve been careless, thinking that I would always have them since they self-seeded, and then they didn’t come back the next year, so I am diligent about seed saving now! - I would say that container gardening IS very rewarding and quite easy as long as you keep things watered and fed. And it is so much fun to be free to rearrange things whenever you want! I hope you have been having a blessed week!!!

    Hi 👋
    I woke up with a big ol' headache this morning, so I'm trying not to do much typing...
    Pffffthhh!
    We'll see how THAT works!
    But I just had to come say - hi!
    I'm thinkin that the headache is from this one pile of wood chips in particular that I was shoveling last night... ?
    That whole mountain of chips is super dry & very dusty.
    It's like those chips aren't decomposing like the other mountains are...
    The wood doesn't stay moist.
    The thing is, those chips are a different type of wood than all the other woodchip mountains I've got here. The other 3 mountains are from Live Oak trees, I know that for sure.
    The wood in this one pile is very white looking. When they delivered it, I forgot to ask the guys what kind of tree it was.
    I was just so excited to get more chips! It never occurred to me it would be a different kind of tree!
    But obviously, it IS different...
    Anyway, I was over there goin to town on that one pile for like an hour straight. Instead of filling a bucket and taking the chips to different places in the yard like I usually do, I was just throwing the chips off the fork all over the pathways that are all around the other wood chip mountains.
    My idea was to try and mix this one different wood with the other oak chips.
    So I never even thought about it being dusty, and that I might be breathing in all those particles.
    I think because it was so windy, the "dust" from the pile just didn't seem to be lingering in the air the way dust normally lingers & floats around.
    So I just didn't notice it...
    But now! Dang!!
    What a big dope I was!!
    Well... live & learn, eh?
    *Note To Self:
    ▪︎ DON'T BE A DOPE!!!
    ▪︎ Wear a mask when working on that pile o' chips.
    (NOT trying to get political about this subject, but...
    Is anyone else now rebellious about wearing masks like I (obviously) am?!
    Yeah, I DEFINITELY find myself with that rebellious feeling on the topic of MASKS these days!)
    New Bumper Sticker:
    Masks - just say NO!

    Beautiful garden. However, if you are gardening for butterflies and bees try using plants native to your area. The Black Swallowtail is an oddball that will feed on non-natives. But, even they would prefer the native Golden Alexanders. There are so many beautiful native plants from your area. Stay away from Lowes and Home Depot nurseries and look for native plant nurseries in your area. Try using straight native flowers and grasses, not man made cultivars, and your yard will come alive.

      Thank you! I have had Golden Alexander in my garden and I’ve thrown out seed for them. The Eastern black swallowtails seem to be more drawn to my fennel. But then again, it varies from year to year. Have an awesome day!!!

    Is your area mainly sunny, partly shade or shady? Do you have any tips of what to plant in a shaded area? I am in Mississippi around Jackson.

    • @gulfcoastbutterflygardening
      @gulfcoastbutterflygardening  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My garden is mostly sunny. There's a little corner that gets afternoon sun, but that's it. Coleus can take shade or sun, and there are so many good different colored varieties! Impatiens like shade and some hydrangeas and ferns and elephant ears and caladiums. Caladiums come in all kinds of patterns and colors. They are very fun and inexpensive to grow from corms. I bought several bags for $20 and planted them several years ago and they come back every year!

    ??Do you make your own potting soil..mix??do you use epsom salt??

    • @gulfcoastbutterflygardening
      @gulfcoastbutterflygardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don’t. I used to mix my own organic soil enhancer and the raccoons would dig it out of the pots and eat it, but now I use osmocote plus since the raccoons don’t try to eat that. LOL! I’ve never tried Epsom salt; although, I’ve heard that it can be very beneficial. Have you found success with it?

      Oh, cool! I do love those swallowtails!!! - I have been using medium pine bark mulch, but there could be a time in the future that I will try using rocks. I'm going to be doing some experimenting!

    Curious why you need so many pots? Is the soil very poor?

    • @gulfcoastbutterflygardening
      @gulfcoastbutterflygardening  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The soil is poor, but I plant most things in containers because armadillos come along a dig my garden up on the regular.

    That Rosemary looked ok to me...
    I mean, it's scraggly & all from being shaded, but it probably won't have any problems growing again now that you've repotted it.
    Are you going to cut it back after it gets over any shock from being repotted?
    I think I prolly would...
    Like, about a week from now.
    Just hack that baby
    ALL THE WAY DOWN!!
    Then it can start a whole new life!!
