Gulf Coast Butterfly Gardening
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ส.ค. 2021
Hey, y’all! Thanks for watching my videos! I’m so glad to get to invite you into my garden and share what God is doing in it. I’m on the Alabama Gulf Coast in zone 9a. When I plant new plants I tell them, “Well, it’s up to you and God now! Y’all’ve gotta want to live!” It’s no wonder that God put Adam and Eve in a garden. Where else would He have put them? There are two places where I feel closest to God and that’s at the beach and in the garden, and that explains why I love those two places so dearly! I’ve been raising butterflies for seven years and I’ve been gardening for that long too. My garden has mostly consisted of random plants in containers, but in February 2021 my husband installed a rose arbor in the backyard. Now I’m doing everything that I can to attract as many butterflies as possible. I want clouds of them, and I want to encourage others to plant for butterflies too. There’s so much joy and hope to be found in the garden!

Happy New Year to my favorite person! I can’t believe you have roses in Jan.
Sending you warm hugs and blankets and tea!! Take care!!!
Hi Rachel, happy new year. I hope you had a wonderful holiday. I love all of you seedlings , it makes spring feel like it around the corner. I have all my seeds ready to start sowing and will be setting up all my shelves, grow lights and heat mats real soon. Not looking forward to this cold snap but for a former Jersey girl this is nothing😂. That care and happy growing.
Your roses are beautiful ❤️
Execelente jardin
Hi Rachel, I do love your videos, and your potting shed is just delightful ❤. January, for us, is when Mother Nature does her cleaning, the cold and dark is unforgiving. This is when I leave her to it and I pop off to England to spend time with family. When I come back there will be plenty to do. It was lovely to see so much diversity still in your garden, I realise how much I miss it all in these winter months. As you say, spring is just around the corner and we're heading to the light. Best wishes to you all for 2025. Many thanks 😊
20s is definitely a cold snap! You are going to be so buff 💪🏻 after moving all your pots to your shed! 10 weeks is crazy, that will pass so quickly! Your cuttings and seedlings are looking so happy and healthy, you are going to be in a transplanting frenzy come springtime! I’m so glad that you still some beautiful butterflies and other pollinators visiting your garden in winter!! I’m so jealous of all your gorgeous roses and all the bright colors all in your life, what a blessing to have those glimmers to bask in everyday! Thanks for sharing all the beauty with us especially your beachy sunsets!
I love hearing the rain on your potting shed. I’d probably hang out in there if the heater was turned on! lol Fun! Yes, here in middle GA we’re going to have 4 mornings in the 20’s. I’ll probably double cover a couple of my huge blue planters with succulents today & on top of that plastic to keep the rain off them. ( I’ll remove the plastic right after it rains keeping the blankets on top of the planters.) Everything else has been in my garage since Dec. I have a little heater out there, too.) ugh. Winter can be such a pain. 😝 Take care girl & keep warm until next time…your GA gardening friend❤
I’m new to your channel beautiful garden.
Have a beautiful Sunday activity God bless
I enjoyed the tour of your shed. What a creative trellis or whatever you’d call it w/ the old plant stand on top of a pot for the plant to grow up & into. That zinnia is beautiful & showing out
Not sure how much it helps but one channel said if you can cover the plants w/ a pot & place a larger pot over that it creates a layer of insulation.
It’s really hard to hear you and your closed captioned is not on. 😢
You can turn it on by tapping top right corner, the option to turn it on or off is yours.
@ it is not highlighted so I don’t have the option.
Beautiful garden
I hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Rachel! I just had to comment that I’m a Brambly hedge fan as well! 😁 Thank you for sharing how to find garden books online, I had no idea!
My garden is a pollinators Haven also, and the butterflies do the same here they stop by for nourishment and sometimes lay eggs. And then move on it depends on what plants that they prefer to seek nourishment from is in bloom. I noticed that there are several different plants blooming yet they prefer some over others. They definitely choose the Mexican Sunflowers constantly from early Summer until the fall up until the first hard frost.
I LOVE your potting shed. Adorable and so functional. I also got the David Austin catalogue. oh boy. Talk about temptation overload. I have three new ones coming in early spring. Where I'm putting them, I have no idea. We've had a very mild fall/winter so far in Houston. It's in the 70s today, on Christmas! We haven't even had a frost, so my roses have been blooming and sending out beautiful new growth. But who knows what's coming round the bend. Thank you for all the inspiration and gardening joy you've shared this year. Wish you and your family Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Oh, Keith! I hope you had a very Merry Christmas!!!!! We did! - I can tell that y’all are in a whole different gardening zone than I am, especially when I compare my garden’s growth to Jo’s from Jo’s TX Garden! Y’all are ahead of us for sure! - I love that you have roses and are going to get more!!! I’m planning on going to a rose seminar in February to learn how to take better care of my roses. They deserve better than what they have gotten from me so far. LOL! - I bet you are going to come up with ingenious ways to tuck those new roses into your garden!!!!! I’m going to need to hear about how you did it! - I hope you have a Happy New Year!!!!!!!!
👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
what a beautiful butterfly garden 🐞🌺🌻
Thank you, Becky!!! God makes so much beauty for us to enjoy!!!!!
Rachel you will love that candytuft! I got some from mom’s garden and I love it so much! Did you know there is annual candytuft? I love it, too. I could send you some seeds😊. Thank you for the beach shots! Gorgeous! Deanna
Yay, Deanna! I am so excited to watch that candytuft grow! As far as I can recollect, I don’t think I have ever grown any or even seen any, except in magazines! - I saw your comment on the live stream and I thought it would let me go back and respond to it, but now I don’t know where to find it. I was doing an experiment with live streaming, but it wasn’t as clear as I wanted it to be. The sunrise was gorgeous though! I missed it so much while I was traveling!!!
@ the sunrise was beautiful!
Your potting shed is so cute! Making it homey will make it so enjoyable to spend time in there sowing and propagating. It’s going to be interesting to see whether the poppy seeds germinate next spring. Wishing you and yours blessings and joy this holiday season and always.
Thank you!!! The potting shed was the only warm place to be this morning! LOL about the poppy seeds! Wouldn’t it be awesome if they end up being the only ones that I have ever had that actually grow in bunches?!? I hope that you have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, too! I’m so excited about having fresh year to look forward to!!!
Thank you Rachel for another sweet video. I love all of it.
Thank you, Lora! I'm so glad you liked it!!! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
Love to find a kindred spirit Gardner in my neck of the gulf coast beaches!! I live in pensacola fl and love to garden !! I’m going to use the poppy seed hack lol we shall see.: thanks for sharing!!!
Yay, Judy! I’m so glad that you are so close by!!! I have only grown about a handful of poppies in all my years of gardening down here, and I’ve tried a lot of different seeds. Wouldn’t it be funny if the out of date McCormick seeds actually were our ticket to growing poppies down here?!?! I look forward to comparing notes with you on all kinds of gardening adventures!!! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
Candytuft is a beautiful perennial. I have it as well.
I’m so glad that you have it, too! I’m really looking forward to experiencing what it smells like!
@@gulfcoastbutterflygardening I never tried to check how they smell because there are always so many bees on it :)
@ LOL! Wow! That’s cool! I’m glad that the bees love it that much!!!
What a charming Potting Shed! Thanks for sharing your book list.
Thanks, Libby!!! I am so glad you liked the potting shed, and I hope you enjoy those books! There’s a treasure trove on archive.org and I want everyone to take advantage of it! The more people that use it, the better it will be! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!!
@@gulfcoastbutterflygardening You're welcome Rachel!
Hi Rachel, Your garden shed is really cute. Thank you for sharing the archive book website. The clip you showed of the ocean makes me want to take a drive to the beach! God Bless you! 😊
Thanks, Anna!!! I'm so glad you liked the ocean clip! Isn't it beautiful?! I love getting to share the beauty of the beach with y’all and good books and plants and butterflies! I want everyone to have all the joy of what God has made!!! I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!
Great visit today-as usual! Thanks for the info about the books. Enjoy your beautiful day in your potting shed!
Thank you, Mary! I’m so glad that I got to share books with you!!! I need to get on there and organize them a little bit better. I just went through and favorited anything that looked like it could be lovely and informative, but I haven’t gotten to look through them all myself. That’s going to be a fun pastime during some dark and dreary February evenings! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! 🌟👶👑💖
Sorry not tuned in for awhile been busy. Anyway glad to see you are still going strong. Down here in Navarre Fl no frost yet lowest temp was 36 one night for a couple of hours so that’s exciting to see if we can get to new year without a frost. Extended forest looks hopeful. Will be interesting to see if the poppies come up. Have a merry christmas
Awww, that’s okay, Wesley!!! Yeah, some of my plants got nipped while I was out of town. It is weird how some coleus went down hard and some didn’t! LOL about the poppies! I’m really interested to see what happens with them, too! I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but wouldn’t it just be the coolest thing if they grow?!? I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!! 🌟👶👑💖🌍
Wow Rachel! Driving all the way to Canada! I bet you really did see all kinds of weather. Hope you had a great time. (I’ve always wanted to go to Vancouver.) Your potting shed looks so pretty inside & fun! My girls all couldn’t come home for Christmas since it falls in the middle of the week & for 2 of them, it interferes with work so they all came home Thursday & left today & we had an early Christmas. We had so much fun & what a joy for them to all come home together at the same time, once again. Anyway after Christmas I’m always ready for spring but there always something to clean up in the yard so that will be something for me to do. As far as seeds, counting on those re-seeders to do their job & I’ll buy only a few additional plant/flowers this year because honestly, my garden beds are full. 😆 Hoping you & your family have a very Merry Christmas!🎄Hugs from GA😊
Oh, yay, Linda! I’m so glad that your daughters got to come for an early Christmas celebration! I know that was an incredible treat! I hope y’all are doing well!!! - It was an adventure to drive so far, and I felt like kissing the ground when I got home! I’m so thankful for everything here, especially not having to deal with snow!!! I wish you a second Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! 🌟👶👑
Hi Rachel. Your garden shed is just perfect, what a lovely place to spend some time while we're waiting for spring. Today, I spent a pleasant time in the garden, foraging for a Christmas display. It's incredible how much you can find. I cut from evergreens, also from the now brown candles of agastache. They still have their aniseed scent and look lovely in the arrangement. I also added some flowers I dried from the summer. I'm dreaming of long, bright, sunny days, though 😅. Thanks for sharing your book collection, your travels, and your warm winter days. 😀
Hey, Kim! I saw your comment on the sunrise video from this morning, but I can’t find it now. I was doing at experiment with live videoing, but it wasn’t as clear as I wanted it to be. - I LOVE that you have been foraging to make Christmas displays!!!!!! I bet they are so lovely!!! I also like how you described “the brown candles” of agastache! That is a very good choice to bring both their beauty and scent into your home! - Yes! This is definitely time for dreaming about what to plant next year! I’m so looking forward to starting a new year fresh!!! Merry, merry Christmas to you!!!!!!!
@gulfcoastbutterflygardening I was just speaking about you to a family who lives here in the village. They are returning to Mexico to spend Christmas with their family and one of the stop overs is in Los Angeles. It's a small world isn't it Rachel 🫠. Although from start to finish the journey will take them around 30 hours. 😱. I think I prefer to travel virtually 🤣. I wish you and your family a very happy Christmas 🎄 😊 ❤️
Good morning from SETX (zone 9a recently changed to 9b 🤷🏻♀️) I still have hummingbirds hoping to finally get some to overwinter here, cuphea and salvia plants are still going strong for them
Oh, man!!! That’s wild to still have hummingbirds!!!!! It would be neat to have them year round! I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!! 🌟👶👑
love all your suggestions!
Thank you, Wendy! I’m always happy to share what works for me!!! I hope that you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!! 🌟👶👑
I love your channel & live in zone 9 almost on the coast in Ms. My failed attempt of fall seed planting of native flora pollinators depressed me. I’d have coffee & a prayer & only 1 packed of over a dozen came up. I’m still hoping maybe some needing cold weather will still pop up but doubt it. Only one sage packet came up. I also successfully killed a few potted natives. I really want a green thumb. My husband is better than I at this. His veg gardens are beautiful. Anyway, will do again in the spring but I’m gonna go buy potted plants. I’d love to show him your yard. Please consider having a garden tour in real! Let your followers hear a walkabout tale of your progression. I’d love to buy a table for garden tea for two event. A fond memory of mine is a walking tour of the yards in the garden district of NewOrleans. I think it was a charity thing. We went to several backyards & some owners offered comments & lemonade. We saw Ann Rice autographing books at a yard. I’m guessing hers?
Oh, no, Sheila! I’m sorry that your seeds didn’t come up! I’ve killed and also not germinated jillions of seeds! I think I’ve finally found a way to grow them! I’ll show you my little trays tomorrow! - I bet those gardens in New Orleans were gorgeous!!! I did a tour like that in Savannah with my family and it was so inspiring to see what others were doing! - I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! 🌟👶👑
@@gulfcoastbutterflygardeningty
Rachael, what’s happening in the garden shed? I must have missed the makeover. What a fun little vignette!
LOL! No, Cheryl! You didn’t miss anything! I just put up a few more things, and Danny hung a chandelier that my friend Lisa gave me. Danny replaced the windows and siding on the potted shed, too, so it is sturdier and it matches the garage now. - I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! 🌟👶👑
Loved seeing your butterflies!
Me too!!! Butterflies are such a joy! Thank you, Sandra!!! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! 🌟👶👑
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family, too!
Your garden is magical!
Awwww! Thank you, Cece!!! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
I've never had a zebra longwing in my butterfly garden. Its beautiful! The Lord showed you favor. My flowers have died back. In the last week we have had 4 mornings of freezing temperatures (low 20s) in South Carolina. Your garden continues to look great!
Oh, Libby! It’s always sad when things get taken down by a freeze, even when you know (if they are perennials) they will grow back next spring! I just checked to see if zebra longwings go as far as South Caroline, and they don’t. I hope you will get to see some at a butterfly conservatory! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!!!
@@gulfcoastbutterflygardening Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family! Luke 2:11
God sent that zebra longwing to brighten your day! Loved seeing what your garden looks like right now. Miss you!🦋
Awww, Bethany, yes! God did send that zebra longwing!!! He knew that it would be a highlight for me!!! I’m so thankful that we share that knowledge that God is with us and for us wherever we are!!!!! I love you!!!!!!
Cant imagine how it Will grow aftar some days ahead good luck dear friend i am your new friend
Yay, I’m so glad to have you as a new friend!!! Yes, I’m planning on growing a lot of things myself this year for my garden from seed. It’s going to be an adventure! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
Ooooooh the zebra longwing!!! So magical! She sat still for you so perfectly! I’ve seen one in my yard once. Such a thrill. The fam had to hear about it for at least half a day! lol. I had no idea that passionvine was their host plant! It was so helpful to see how/how much you mist your cuttings! 👀 Your garden is so so beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us!💕
LOL about the family having to hear about the zebra longwing for half a day!!! It really WAS a thrill! Like my brain flooded with all the good chemicals. Maybe if people knew how good butterflies would make them feel, then they would garden more for them! Haha! - I hope that my cuttings will live now that I have had the temerity to show how to do it like it’s fail proof. LOL! But I have grown them like that for years. We’ll see! - I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!!!!
OMG i’M dYiNg Desperate furniture salespeople 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 It’s SO TRUE Such pretty combinations! 👀 Love gomphrena so much! Thanks for the shout out! 😉 You are so sweet. Ok, hold the phone. HOW CUTE IS YOUR POTTING SHED? Your cuttings look amazing!! lol the paint speckles! I’ve done that so many times when I’m spray painting something on the driveway! Oh that toad is so pretty!! So many creatures! It always makes me smile when you show us critters! And the snake skin!! Cool! Oh how wonderful! I’m so excited about your gulf coast penstemon! Mine looks awful and has decidedly not bounced back from the hot summer and drought here in the fall! I wonder if I should try it in a pot next spring? Hmmmm. I love that apple blossom snapdragon! Swoon! I’ve got gulf frit cats too! So fun!! What a gorgeous tour! Thanks for sharing, my sweet friend!
Oh, Jo! You deserve ALL the shoutouts!!! I want everyone to see your garden, so they can see how it’s done! I was just watching your newest video today, and I think your garden is just as gorgeous as it was in the spring!!! Everything is so healthy and glossy! Going with natives is such a smart move!!! Thank you so much for all of your kind words! You are a dear friend and a great benefactress!!!
Nice Video
Thank you!!! I hope you have a fabulous week!!!
Very special having the zebra longwing visiting your garden 👏👏 This morning there was a perfect monarch in the garden 👏👏 Enjoying the cool weather and doing much the same as you with propagation 😊 Have a great week 🍁🦋🌻
Oh, isn’t it such a treat to still have butterflies around?!? They make me so happy! I wish I could bring as much joy wherever I go as butterflies do! LOL!
So many beautiful butterflies! That zebra longing is indeed magical!
I hope you will have a zebra longwing visit your garden, Keith! I checked and they can be found in Texas!
:Long wings are really striking! I do get lots of those in the early summer but haven't seen any lately. Lucky you! I did find a calico cat in my garden but since she is calico, that means I can expect to find her kittens soon., also. It is suppose to be 28F here Tuesday night and it did freeze this morning but wasn't a hard freeze - just 30F. Still very cold and not cormfortable for a small kitten. If I can tame her up, I hope to get her in a live trap and get her fixed. Whoever her owner is (people dump cats in our neighborhood all the time) will just have to be without their kitten. She has been behind our pump house for weeks and lives off the land except I finally broke down and gave her a plate of turkey yesterday. She didn't tun when I called her but did leave when I walked toward her. I left a plate of turkey and warm gravy and it was all gone soon. Today I put out a plate of turkey broth and will soon go check on that. I DO NOT want to attract cats but she is so cute and it's so cold outside. Just checked and I had about 50 ants and a bee stuck in it. No kitten. But it looks like it had some of the broth was gone. Your garden is still beautiful and providing the insects with nutrition and you with beauty - gardens sure are giving/sharing plants. Lesson to all of us!.
Oh, Mary! How cool about the calico kitten!!! Did it come back? Did you keep it? My friend has a stray calico and she is so beautiful and is such a fancy, dainty girl!
@@gulfcoastbutterflygardening She did return and comes as soon as I walk outside. Yesterday was the first day I got to pet her - filled with ticks. Today, she let me really pet her but didn't eat the chicken wings I boiled out! Picky, picky she wants her turkey breast w/gravy. I started her on kibble and she gobbled it down but now, she wants her breast meat. I've created a monster that hisses at me when I get close to her - husssss. I pretend she is trying to say hiiiiii. If I squat down, she will come and walk around me and rub against me. Still didn't eat her warm breakfast but I'm not giving in - the turkey is all gone. Once I can handle her, I'll put tick meds on her then get her to a place that will find a home for her. Don't have the heart to go look at that box of baby plants I just bought as I forgot to cover them last night!
exciting day in the garden
Thank you, Eleanor!!! Yes! So much is happening out there all of the time! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!!

I bought them as plants, but I am saving seeds from them! You can message me at Pinterest for some. I am Gulf Coast Butterfly Gardening there, too. I hope you have a fabulous Thanksgiving Day!!!
