I truly appreciate the work and your patience to document the progress including the trials and errors that come with it. I am or I was a very capable DIYer in my time, I am a retired technician and I'll be 62 this year and have been sim racing for the last couple of years and truly enjoying it. I have been contemplating whether to buy a ready-made seat-mover or build one myself since I have all the tools and knowledge of how things work and I must say your videos inspire me to get my ass off the couch and start building things again. Keep up your good work.
Stephen, I am just turning 60.. so Yeah.. I'm pretty much the same age. I did the same thing.. ready built - I thought about it too. But I figured, It's not rocket science. So I built my 3DOF, which has been running for 2.5 years now with no issues.. *and it's absolutely mental * Best thing I ever built. Watch a few of those videos too if you have a chance. I will be going over the Arduino/IBT setup again on the 2DOF seatmover upgrade this weekend.. I dont know if I will get a video out or not this weekend but I will be working on it to better explain the details.. Thanks for commenting.. Congrats on 62.. Dave

Thanks for taking a look.. This is pretty experimental for sure.. Lot of unknowns.. That kind of why my first build (3DOF) uses a 12V truck battery as it's power. We shall see if these AC to DC converters can handle the pain (maybe not).. but at least by doing this for you guys, we can get a little data on what's actually required for a reliable power source. Have you any idea how many amps you were pulling when it happened?
Good point.. 40 amps is a lot.. but I was figuring this is a seat mover.. If it takes more than 25 amps to move me.. I probably need to lose some weight or something! .. Anyway.. It stalls way higher than I thought it would but we will see what happens . If we (me and you guys, that is..) get some good data from these tests it will help people decide Dave
@@DMAX_DIY Yes, 40 Amp. too much, but keep in mind that they are cheap power supplies (NOT certified) and will never actually reach 40Amp. The cheap ones reach 65/70% of the nominal Amperage, and MeanWell will reach 95% even if the price of the certified one doubled...

Thanks for the videos. I'm starting to build a 1DoF (traction loss only) and have found you videos very helpful. xsimulator is full of info, but I find it very difficult to find what I'm looking for so the videos have been great (plus the links to the important parts of xsimulator).
Thanks for taking a look.. No they will not be too strong.. You can set that up in the software.. So If you drive a real low powered car, it will act like it.. If you drive a formula 1 car. Yep it will definitely act like an F1 car.. so it's better to have way more power available than not.. Check back, probably having another video out late this weekend.. Dave
@@DMAX_DIY Oh yeah I see. As you can tell, I know very little about motion rigs. Thanks to your posts, I'm learning a lot about them. I sure wish I could experience a motion rig on some of the awesome tracks I've just acquired and racing in the events over at Sir Spats Gaming Server for Assetto Corsa, the Prague, 1966 Spa, and Targa Florio tracks. I ran the Targa Hotlap Challenge in about 45 minutes. I would not ask you to try and make a video of you running that one in your full motion rig, but If you ever want to make a video running a track again maybe with this project your working on to showcase it or your FM rig, Please consider Prague or 1966 Spa tracks, they are shorter but man are they great tracks!. Of course if you do decide to enter the Targa event be sure to video it! Even if you just cruising the track and not really trying to make time. I for one would watch it in it's entirety. Oh the only reason I'm even mentioning this, as you probably already know I'm 62 and when I see other fellas around my age having a thrill of a drive, well I just think that's the good stuff. I do like reading all the comments you are getting from this project as well, till next time, enjoy and don't short anything out! -Clicker
@@DMAX_DIY sorry. English is not my mother tongue. I meant a motor similar to the one dedicated to traction loss but for the surge motion. I have recently tried a 3 DOF racing sim in a store and I missed the « kick » forward on gas and backwards on brakes. I guess that with good wheels, a wiper motor could do just fine.

Hey Dave - thanks for these vids! starting my own build here as soon as everything shows up. I got the same motors you did here, and really appreciate you doing this testing on them... Good stuff. Did you ever get the torque measured? Also I noticed you mentioned they're 20:1, but saw you have 18:1 written on them. Curious which is the right one :D I'm trying to get all the specs sorted out for simcalc, but I'm missing some info still. Oddly, it seems no data sheet was ever written for these lol. Thanks!

I watched this video series about 5x before building mine and this has been super invaluable. I think my only issues is that the pots seem noisy and the motors are constantly chattering. I don't see movement but it definitely seems like the system is working when it shouldn't be. I think that's your point about a hall sensor instead of a mechanical pot. Any advice?
Ensure good connections to everything and make sure you are using shielded cable and ferrite chokes for your pot connections and not running them next to power cables. Also make sure your PWMmin is not too high as well as bumping up your fpid a couple notches can help.
Two weeks ? I have had two weeks of trouble too Dave .In fact a whole computer rebuild is in the works.I hope to back after the 21st of this month. the devil is busy these days bringing discord between even friends .Things are ramping up World wide and the Bible has told us all this right along. I am comited to walk forward in life with out hating anyone.I am put at odds due to my stand and friends and they are leaving me several at a time. Well,it is what it is.I do not watch ( any ) TV .None period.So my World view is not that of the average person.And I keep it to myself now, as I am attacked for having my own opinion.Cheers buddy .

Have you done the test of the 10k wire bound potentiometer? In nz I can’t find hall potentiometer so I’m thinking to use analog hall sensors with magnets. A49e hall sensors are dirt cheap and readily available
I would go with the 180 degree hall effect pots.. I order them from digi-key.. 180 degrees is all you need plus with the hall effect, they can spin all the way around without encountering any physical resistance. I think I have them linked in the description.. No.. I have some 10k wire wound ones.. I have not had time to test them.. I think the hall effect would have less interference EMI than wire wound.. but I do plan to test them next year.. Dave

Is it easy to set up 2 arduinos for running more than 3 motors, the quides i find tells me to do 2 replica setups with ibt and arduinos but they dont show how to set it up when you calibrate the motors and sign every motion to axies. Going to build surge, sway, tc, and yaw. Gonna start with the easy 3 dof and later ad sway and surge if i can build it. Quessing the hard part is wheigt for the sway and surge, but going to be fun to try.
Yes, I think it should be, they will be on separate com ports.. I have seen several people do it for their projects. Its just communications setup between each Arduino and the SMC3. Way more info on x-simulator.net forum.. Also maybe check out 6 Degrees of flights video too.. He uses two and describes how to use them. I bought all of the same motors, Arduino and motor controllers. Where is the sketch for the Arduino? Not clear to me how to get SMC3 talking to the motors.
Can you code the arduino so if a signal is being sent to the motor but no changes were read from the potentiometer it will power off? That would be a good fail safe. Maybe add an led or a screen showing an error code.
yeah good question.. And I have the answer.. In the SMC3 software, it does that with the CLIP limits and the MAX limits.. So the Clip limits will try and reverse power the motor when it approaches the CLIP.. If it passes the CLIP, it will still try and reverse power the motors until it reaches the MAX Limits. Nice video. Do you plan to create a surge dedicated motor. "Low" power shouldn't be an issue.

@@dgator7251 I agree with DGator here.. I found that once I soldered the connections it helped my 3DOF rig. Also The PWMin can affect it.

I can't find motors like that will I need a right side and left side
24v wheelchair motor,yes,left right.
Yes.. these were left and right.. But.. On my 3DOF rig, the crab pot motors were agnostic.. sort of.. I just put the armature on whatever side I wanted to..
