Low mount rear wipers. As an ex auto glass tech and Toyota and Honda employee, here’s why they don’t high mount rear wipers. While sitting in the drivers seat turn and look out the back widow and notice the most used point of sight and look how much of that will be in the wiper path on a high mount and how much more you get with the low mount. High mounts clear a little spot dead middle of the lower half of the widow where as bottom mounts clear alot more of the bottom half of the window. In reality if you’re driving an SUV you should be able to use your side mirrors well enough to never need a back window or rear view mirror but car drivers never have that much skill.
I was planning on getting an ST Explorer but that vertical screen is a deal breaker. Especially considering the fact that they squeezed all the camera views to the top.

The vertical screen is not as good as a horizontal, but as for passing on the ST for that reason alone is bad move. You won't find a car that big, that cool looking and that fast and fun to drive for the same price anywhere. I'd love to know what you settled on. Probably a Chevy Traverse.

I think they have the exhaust ports coming from the bottom to prevent the exhaust fumes from fading and damaging the paint of the back lower bumper over a period of time. I personally think it's a good idea
Test drove this over the weekend and not gonna lie the v6 drives amazing. I know folks are going with the Palisade and Telluride these days but the explorer drives amazing.
Just purchased a 2022 King Ranch. Truly an awesome vehicle. It is very quick and has a very smooth ride especially when compared to our 2016 Jeep GranCherokee. The interior build quality is really nice too. The twin turbo 3.0 liter is an excellent engine with 400 hp and 415 ft lbs of torque

The next Explorer will have a larger built-in screen like the Edge. My guess is your not a Ford fan. I have a Chrysler 300C Hemi with leather mocha interior. Why? Because I like the color just as I do in this King Ranch. If I wanted a different color interior I would purchase a Platinum or an ST. These are great vehicles that have improved continuously over it's production years.
Hey Joe. The center 10.1" screen was to be larger and built in like the new Edge SUV, but most changes were pushed back until 2023. Ford included the current larger screen and a 900+ B&O stereo as standard equipment on the king Ranch where it use to be an option. I know you often find things you would like to see changed, but like moving the rear wiper requires retooling. It does not take many changes to increase the MSRP. I've seen you pass zonks on the lower rear wiper on several vehicles, but from all you SUV reviews. I don't recall any of them having top wipers. Ford uses focus groups on their top selling vehicles. It appears the horn button wasn't an issue. I agree with the prop rods. You can purchase them at a dealer, but they should be standard. Regarding the 3rd roll seat. I'm guessing No leather keeps the price down. Kids mainly use them when they're not folded down. Since. The average price of a new vehicle has risen to $40,000. I think if you're into the western style SUV. It's an outstanding SUV. I have to add. Make mine a loaded with the brake performance package (red Calibers) iconic silver ST. Regarding heads up display I can take it or leave it unless it's included in the base price. It seem like each year. The Explorer is like a fine wine. It gets better over time.

Hate that Ford's engineers didn't put the back-up cameras from top to bottom on the screen instead of left to right, or at least integrate one of them into the digital instrument cluster. This car seems like too much of a compromise for how expensive it is.
King Ranch is a great option for a luxury mid size SUV, but if I'm spending that much, I'd get the ST. I just looked at the exact one I'd buy yesterday if I was in the market now, a red and black ST. But I can see the King Ranch being a good option. I still miss our Eddie Bauer 07 Explorer! Thanks Joe for the review!
@@RaitisRides don't, they have an oil starvation issue. If you push HP above 500 hp you have to install a manual oil sump which we all know is not a long term solution.
Its hilarious, if they turned it horizontal it would appeal to every customer of such a SUV. They are 180 degrees in the wrong for their customer base in 2021/22. I need to make sure I don't own any of their stock, because this company is too stupid to function.

I agree with tucking the rear wiper underneath the spoiler. I think the one concern is that the mechanical box for the wiper is bulky and would take up visibility if it was up by the spoiler. If Fords had the digital rear view mirror (which they should for these size vehicles) that would negate that issue entirely.
The only zonk in my opinion is the iPad-style info-tainment screen. It sticks out like a sore thumb and seems like an after thought when companies do it that way. I like fully integrated screens more.
What they really need to do is make the top half of the screen the backup camera and the bottom half the 360 camera with that vertical screen. Taking up the whole bottom half with just a car icon showing parking sensors is useless. That could easily be moved to the instrument cluster or just illuminate a specific quadrant of the 360 camera to indicate the status of a specific sensor.
Another idea is to integrate the backup cam into the instrument cluster, and either repurpose the infotainment screens for other things, or just leave it out entirely. Would probably save them some money in that regard.
I have been driving it for a while. When we made decision to get it I couldn’t find any review of this trim. So far we love it. My husband drives F150 and let me tell y’all he just look out for reason to drive my Explorer King-ranch..Does not behave like that with my other 4 past vehicles. So soft so smooth so much fun to drive, and it comes with the characters!
This is what my mom bought in October 2022. it’s so pretty and it always smells brand new. Also was custom made on the inside. It was shipped from Texas to us in Vermont ❤

I wish Ford would bring back the adjustable pedals. This is what kept me from buying a 2021 Explorer ST. Ended up getting a 2019 Platinum. Nice looking ride none the less.
Great review Joe. I’m not liking the vertical touchscreen and they really cheapened the 3rd row. At this price point and luxury mid size SUV I like the interior better on the Grand Cherokee L in Summit trim with the Hemi. Not to mention this was in RWD shoes. I like 4WD in a Jeep. But Ford has nailed the exterior good looks. Love the King Ranch front seats too.
I would choose the GC over this in a heartbeat. The interior is in another league over this Ford. I think Ford has introduced some terrible interiors lately. Namely Escape, Explorer and Bronco Sport. Then you figure in the price tag it's a no for me.

A king ranch explorer should’ve had more bell and whistles In my opinion. Definitely agree with the zonk on not having body paint by the wheels and the exterior should have two tone paint like the expedition to differentiate it from other explorers. If it didn’t have the badge I would think it’s just an xlt explorer. They dropped the ball on this one for sure

Hi Joe, if Ford had get everything right all the time like the key fob, the body painting, and connectivity for everybody how will you feel? I love this Explorer but I think if everything were to be perfect without a missed opportunity then cars were to be boring but in a great way.

Looking around YT for videos on the KR- just purchased mine today , to be delivered next week- and I saw this. Being in Dallas, I’ll forgive the stereotypes ( 🙃). I’m new to Ford.. but after test-driving the KR, I was impressed. I chose the KR over the ST because of the hideous black interior. Felt cheap ( except the bucket seats… they were identical to the KR, just black). The KR definitely felt more luxurious. I drove an X3 with a very similar 2-toned chocolate interior, and the Ford was actually BETTER. Much softer seats and less cheap-ish details. Thanks for the video. Love it!

Just leased a White King Ranch Explorer. Coming out of a 2019 Expedition Limited that was loaded. Interior is gorgeous. Will do fine for what I drive mileage wise and use it for. King Ranch Expedition was ridiculous price wise on a lease. Looking forward to this King Ranch Explorer.
Love seeing a new trim on the Explorer. I’ve owned three over the years, 1993, 1997 and a 2001. Great SUV that needed some TLC from Ford. Great job Joe and Lori!
Oh, heck, Joe... I have a neighbor that's larger than the state of Rhode Island! To quote Rodney Dangerfield, she's so large, the post office has assigned her a zipcode! She was standing on a street corner and a cop told her to break it up! Okay, okay... back to being serious. I've had two Explorers in my life. I like the way Ford has evolved this venerable SUV. I also agree that the fender flares would look much nicer if they were matched to that beautiful black body color. I've seen the F-150s over the years with that cool King Ranch touch, so to see this on the Explorer is a very welcome addition. That third row should be relegated to hauling the mother-in-law. 😉
I do like this package. The thing they need to do with the exterior trim is like they have on the trucks. That would put it over the top for me. The iPad on the dash is ok with me. Thanks for a great review.
I thought the 22 King Ranch and the Platinum had the 400 hp 3l not the 360 hp. I drove one at a central Florida dealership and that is what they told me. A very impressive vehicle.

(Dead a$$, that was what he said, I'm not even making it up). He also made fun of the Ford Bronco roof issues and especially the soft top ford bronco saying "at least our vehicles roof doesn't leak, or are defected from the factory".

South Texan here about 45 minutes from the King Ranch, no one here ranches in any kind of King Ranch Ford’s haha. Unless you’re filthy rich and don’t care. Fun fact, the King Ranch is the largest ranch in the United States at nearly 900K acres, it spans over several counties, has communities, stores, schools, thousand of employees, and in size, is larger than the state of Rhode Island!
It’s wired CarPlay & you don’t have to drop the headrests manually before pressing the power fold button. It drops them for you when you press the powered fold button.
Very nice to see a King Ranch version of an Explorer. But like you mentioned, no HUD is a big miss and I feel like Ford is missing the boat here. Most competitors have HUDs as either standard or options and it's a great feature.
Joe I love the enthusiasm to gather Cattle in this king ranch but as a southerner from texas, I can assure you that 99% of the farmhands here will NOT set their brand new $57k suv anywhere near their cattle grounds, that’s what we use cheap golf carts and 10 year old borderline destroyed Toyota tacomas for 😭

I bought my first Mustang from these guys. Mustang V8 LX like the highway patrol cops had. Much quicker and more nimble than the heavier GT and loads fun to drive.
Ughh....anything over 30k should have standard usb/charging ports in every row. The screen size is ok in this. I personally don't like the huge infotainment screens. It makes too much clutter & takes up alot of space, seeing the road or view ahead. You only need a screen big enough to use all the daily functions in the vehicle. The panoramic roofs are cool. But they also get expensive when they start to leak or get damaged if you own the vehicle for a longer period of time. I get the novelty though.
@RaitisRides Yeah, got the Explorer Platium a few months ago in Rich Copper. Real nice vehicle. Was changing the instrument cluster at night and was like, man, would have been super cool if Ford did that.

I have a 17 Ford Explorer Sport 3.5 V6 Twin Turbo and I love it but I do wish it was a little more luxurious

I would choose the GC over this in a heartbeat. The interior is in another league over this Ford. I think Ford has introduced some terrible interiors lately. Namely Escape, Explorer and Bronco Sport. Then you figure in the price tag it's a no for me.
Technically this wouldn't be considered a luxury SUV. The Lincoln Aviator is ford's luxury offering in this size.

A king ranch explorer should’ve had more bell and whistles In my opinion. Definitely agree with the zonk on not having body paint by the wheels and the exterior should have two tone paint like the expedition to differentiate it from other explorers. If it didn’t have the badge I would think it’s just an xlt explorer. They dropped the ball on this one for sure

Looking around YT for videos on the KR- just purchased mine today , to be delivered next week- and I saw this. Being in Dallas, I’ll forgive the stereotypes ( 🙃). I’m new to Ford.. but after test-driving the KR, I was impressed. I chose the KR over the ST because of the hideous black interior. Felt cheap ( except the bucket seats… they were identical to the KR, just black). The KR definitely felt more luxurious. I drove an X3 with a very similar 2-toned chocolate interior, and the Ford was actually BETTER. Much softer seats and less cheap-ish details. Thanks for the video. Love it!

Just leased a White King Ranch Explorer. Coming out of a 2019 Expedition Limited that was loaded. Interior is gorgeous. Will do fine for what I drive mileage wise and use it for. King Ranch Expedition was ridiculous price wise on a lease. Looking forward to this King Ranch Explorer.
Love seeing a new trim on the Explorer. I’ve owned three over the years, 1993, 1997 and a 2001. Great SUV that needed some TLC from Ford. Great job Joe and Lori!
Oh, heck, Joe... I have a neighbor that's larger than the state of Rhode Island! To quote Rodney Dangerfield, she's so large, the post office has assigned her a zipcode! She was standing on a street corner and a cop told her to break it up! Okay, okay... back to being serious. I've had two Explorers in my life. I like the way Ford has evolved this venerable SUV. I also agree that the fender flares would look much nicer if they were matched to that beautiful black body color. I've seen the F-150s over the years with that cool King Ranch touch, so to see this on the Explorer is a very welcome addition. That third row should be relegated to hauling the mother-in-law. 😉
I do like this package. The thing they need to do with the exterior trim is like they have on the trucks. That would put it over the top for me. The iPad on the dash is ok with me. Thanks for a great review.

I thought the 22 King Ranch and the Platinum had the 400 hp 3l not the 360 hp. I drove one at a central Florida dealership and that is what they told me. A very impressive vehicle.

Anyway the Ford explorer is an average SUV, but the King Ranch is the "offroad" trim or the trim the Jeep made fun of.

@@elkofcanada5003 yes it is, but jeep made fun of Ford because they offer a "offroad" trim on a normal SUV, while "Jeep makes a "offroad" focus SUV from the ground up and not just putting some red tow hooks, a new trim and a more "rugged" exterior like the Ford Explorer Timberlake". (Dead a$$, that was what he said, I'm not even making it up). He also made fun of the Ford Bronco roof issues and especially the soft top ford bronco saying "at least our vehicles roof doesn't leak, or are defected from the factory".
@@Michael-vt5sj Yeah Ford botched the Broncos roofs lmao. And the Timberline has an LSD and a little bit more height but it's not an "offroad" yeah...more like a Subaru Forester Wilderness than anything Wrangler-like...just not enough ground clearance or articulation

It’s wired CarPlay & you don’t have to drop the headrests manually before pressing the power fold button. It drops them for you when you press the powered fold button.

Very nice to see a King Ranch version of an Explorer. But like you mentioned, no HUD is a big miss and I feel like Ford is missing the boat here. Most competitors have HUDs as either standard or options and it's a great feature.

Joe I love the enthusiasm to gather Cattle in this king ranch but as a southerner from texas, I can assure you that 99% of the farmhands here will NOT set their brand new $57k suv anywhere near their cattle grounds, that’s what we use cheap golf carts and 10 year old borderline destroyed Toyota tacomas for 😭

You know what would make that infotainment unit better? If it could be removed from the dash and used like a tablet, then put it back when you’re done. Why don’t auto makers do that?

What annoys me is that this is a ‘22, and I have a ‘21 platinum, and both still have the older screen with sync 3, while there have been cars released in 2021 by ford that have the updated screen and sync 4… lazy on Fords part

I bought my first Mustang from these guys. Mustang V8 LX like the highway patrol cops had. Much quicker and more nimble than the heavier GT and loads fun to drive.
Ughh....anything over 30k should have standard usb/charging ports in every row. The screen size is ok in this. I personally don't like the huge infotainment screens. It makes too much clutter & takes up alot of space, seeing the road or view ahead. You only need a screen big enough to use all the daily functions in the vehicle. The panoramic roofs are cool. But they also get expensive when they start to leak or get damaged if you own the vehicle for a longer period of time. I get the novelty though.
