I was able to access the top of the transaxle and fill the oil from the top by removing the battery and battery tray. The fan and pulley are easy to remove in place. Removing the fill plug was a little bit awkward, but still a lot quicker than removing the whole axle.
This video was helpful in locating the fill plug and learning to remove it.

    • @georgeharvey3062

@@freewillchoice8052 it was quite easy. You need to just drop the transmission from the mower. Take all the bolts out and be careful when splitting the transmission in half. You need to sort of pry and gently tap the seam with a chisel. Don’t forget to razor off the old gasket material and clean well with a solvent. Replace the filter and any bad seals. Use High Temp gasket sealer when outback together. When refilling I recommend using the suggested fluid. I know some people use regular motor oil but I didn’t want to have to do this again in the future. Good luck.

@@freewillchoice8052 I think these sealed hydrostatic transmissions are meant to be replaced not serviced which I think is a complete waste. After watching the video i decided to do a filter and fluid change on the mower because I’d used it hard for about 10 years. It was amazing how clean the old oil was in it but I’m sure it had broken down the oil somewhat. I did not replace any seals because there were no leaks at all. Best of luck !

Not a fun job but you certainly took the guess work out of it. Fluid level looked good on mine, it did not like going uphill. Changed the oil, now ill put it back together and give this girl another ride. Okay, reassembly complete and its still a slow poke especially going up hill. Aside from belt replacement, is there anything else i need to consider? Drive belt tightening? No squeeky belt noise either. Husky has little or no info out there...arrg.

Did you find the problem? I have a lot of hills at my place and it was acting like a drive belt slipping, but replacing that didn't work. Called General Transmission (the manufacturers of the transmission) and they diagnosed mine as needing a driven kit ($55) plus a transaxle variation belt ($18). Thought I was in for a new transmission ($500), so I was happy!

My mower will move forward and back but with very little strength. Can't go uphill forwards or backwards. Last summer it did this, but after warming up it started working properly, and yes, this is an old mower. I was hoping adding transmission fluid would fix this, but it looks like I'll have to remove the whole thing as in your video. @@DirtRoadAutoRepair It makes total sense. I ended up using 20w50 because it was recommended by my local mower repair shop. My issue was initially once it got warmed up no power on hills. I changed drive belt, and had the same issue. So the next step was the transaxle. I replaced the oil. Got it back together, and it seems to be climbing hills now fine even when it's heated up, but I feel like it's lost power at full throttle. May just be a throttle adjustment now.

You said 5W-50 full synthetic. I see a bottle that says 0W-40?

What seals were bad , the oil went someplace

I mostly just needed to put fresh oil in mine. Oil does break down over time with heat input. The thing that helped the most with mine was a new tight drive belt.

They couldn't design this where we could change the fluid without removing the transmission.

It really bugs me that they actually say these are not serviceable at all. You can't change or fill the oil according to the manufacturer, you just have to buy a whole new transmission $$$$$$$$ That's why the fill cap is so hard to get off, and why they call it a plug instead of a cap.

There's a filter which should be changed as well. Remove the bottom cover to access it.

No wonder that fluid needed changing. Never saw one packed with mud and crap like that one. Lucky over heating didn't ruin it.

Why you telling people to put 5w 50 when you put 0w40

Just rewatched it and never said that I put 0w-40 in it. I do a lot of projects, sometimes at the same time. If not sure what the Mobil 1 was in the shot for.

Pointing and talking about the task doesn’t help me know how to do the task. Next time show the tool and how it’s used. You can get a wearable camera or position the camera with a tripod while you work. Thanks!

To each his own. Sorry the video didn’t help you specifically. I don’t make 30 minute videos showing bolt removals. If you need to be shown how to use a ratchet I can make a short that shows how they work and send it your way.
