    Your encouraging comments on other metal former's channels is the prime example of high class & humility. The dvds are favorites esp. on evenings following a high stress work day, the metal distortion around the punched holes is like a happy little trees in oil paintings. Thanks!

      Thanks for the kind words. I actually didn't like the distortion around the first holes, so I hammered and sanded them smooth.

    Great series as always. For drag racing NHRA requires a larger tubing around the outside of the seat. I used 4130 1/2" tube in sectiones nd welding then together, wrap with aluminium, weld that on and finish. Also you need two egg shaped holes, one each side and one submarine hole forseat bolts. Thanks again, Fred Barnes

    I would love to see you analyze this Seat project from a cost analysis perspective. What could be done to create an approximation of the same seat, but cutting down the number of primary sections and the integral wired edge . There has to innumerable options to cut down the cost if it was needed to outsource something like this to get a project finished.

      Well, you certainly can use CNC machinery to speed some parts of the process. Here's one example:
      th-cam.com/video/A2Pf2WspsTU/w-d-xo.html
      I also have a video that shows how to make a simple bomber seat with very basic tooling, and you could probably build this seat in one day:

      @RonCovell  ปีที่แล้ว

      Terry - that's a fair question, but SO hard to answer. I'd probably spend two days just making the buck, and probably a week and a half - minimum - making the seat. As you know, I'm a slow worker.

    Are the wholes purely an aesthetic choice or do they offer other uses?

    • @RonCovell
      @RonCovell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have done a series of videos on 'Bomber' seats, and just after WW2, many home builders used surplus aircraft seats in their hot rod projects because they were cheap, and widely available. In aircraft use, weight is critical, so holes were put in these seats to make them lighter. I use holes as a design element, which I think really makes a project like this more interesting to look at.

    That wire around the perimeter isn't really doing anything to add structural support, am I right in thinking its there to stop the folded over edge [that surrounds it]; from collapsing into a fold?

    • @RonCovell
      @RonCovell  ปีที่แล้ว

      The wire adds a lot of strength to the edge. If you hold two strips of metal in your hands - one with a wired edge, and one that's plain, you can immediately feel the additional strength the wire adds. Most automobiles used wired edges on the fender edges up to the mid-1930's to strengthen them, and help prevent cracking.

    G'day Ron
    Co-incidentally, I have a video coming out late night Wednesday my time (Tuesday afternoon for you?) where I have done some FEA studies on flared holes, showing what benefit they actually give, rather than just looking cool.
    A question for you though - around 29:20 you have a battery drill with an annular cutter. I've only seen those for magnetic base drills. Who makes the smaller ones?

    • @RonCovell

      The annular cutters I use are made by Hougen, sold under the name 'Rotabroach'. They are widely available here in the US, I'm not sure who your distributor would be, but I'm sure you can find them with a little research.

      @@RonCovell I don't know if rolations apply, but I would love to see smallish dust collector shroud and an impeller build using hobbyist friendly tools and materials like pop rivets, solder and galvanized sheetmetal. A second stage transparent plexiglass baffle would be even more awesome. There's quite a few of these videos, but they look homely and fail to inspire. I believe it would be an extremely popular video and would increase your subs, since woodworkers are a huge part of the DIY market. The addition of the plexiglass baffle would show how your metal working can be applied to other types of materials. At the end of it all, you'll have your very own shop dust collector.

      @@RonCovell The best TH-cam videos are by Mathias Wandel and he gets into the entire science. It's really quite simple. The goal is to maximize CFM, which needs a 3500rpm 1hp motor. A professional looking sheet metal recreation of his wooden one would be great. The shroud and impeller is the hardest one to make and the second stage baffle is the other. Most just build the second stage for their preexisting dust collector. I saw your sander video, but ideally a nice metal, general purpose one is what people want. You might even collab with him.
