There are a thousand and one channels that can tell you about tools and techniques, but what really comes across on this channel is the care, attention to detail, and willingness to put in the effort to get the quality just right. Learned something here with you "Welding" that copper tank. I have Silver Soldered copper many times but never welded it. Thank you for showing me how it can be done with a deoxidized rod and tig. Old Dogs can learn new tricks. Woof!! Great work building this tank and looking forward to see the finished tank.

I've never seen that clever trick of pressing the work against the chuck using the tailstock instead of holding it in the jaws. Thanks for the video Ron
That technique is called 'friction turning' - it's the friction of the part being forced against the chuck jaws that allows it to be turned. Of course there are limits to how much cutting force you can apply, but it works well within these limits.
Ron, once again you have brought simplicity to what for many has been a complex series of steps in our own projects. looking forward to the conclusion of this project,

Yes, copper dissipates the heat more than any other metal I've tried, so you have to really pour the heat into it. I had my machine set at 210 amps, but I didn't use the full output - I moderated it with the foot pedal.

I've been watching both channels and working on a boiler. It is always refreshing and insightful to see a master complement another's work in this way. We're being taught how to think about our work and not just copy to achieve a reproducible result.

My first visit here but not what I expected. I don't know of any hobbyist who can drop a couple of thousand at every challenge. I roll edges over a wood mandrel and anneal the copper (or brass) with each pass - just as Quinn would do - then continue with the next challenge. I did learn more about TIG welding copper though. This is on the professional level. Thanks for the effort anyway.

Great collaboration between two of my regular TH-cam watches. That tank is looking beautiful already, and will surely compliment the stationary engine's aesthetic.
Copper and copper-based alloys like Brass and Bronze have a wide spectrum of possible colors. That's one of the reasons so many artists and craftspeople choose them for their work.

I have been a beermaker for over 40 years, and I used to follow the beermaking groups on Facebook, but (I have found) that the youngsters in those groups don't have the discipline to keep me interested in following the groups. Too much fighting. I have found that the moonshine and distilling groups tend to be more adult (and better moderated). I have followed your metalworking for a while and really like your approach. I don't distill, but I have always wanted to build a still, just as an exercise in creativity. I would be out in the shop right now, except for two factors: I don't like working outside in the cold, and the price of copper is obscene. Thanks to your guidance, I'll probably spend the next few months learning to TIG weld, and maybe (this time next year), I can complain about the cold again...
Hey, that's great news, Steve! Be sure to send me pictures as you move forward. That aluminum backer bar for the welding would have worked a LOT better if I'd taken the time to make hold-downs on both ends of the copper, and the .040-inch gap helped me to get more consistent penetration with the weld. The more we do, the more we learn.
Ron is the mechanics professor we never had. In my school they "taught" us about using the lathe, welder, milling machine and other stuff, but it really was "okay so this in the picture is a lathe, it works like this and you can do this kinda stuff". I am one of the few that learned how to use a lathe cause I would often get bored, wander out of class and casually wind up in the workshop, so I just started to play with the machines till I learned my way on them. If we had a guy like Ron as our prof me and my classmates could've easly put together a 25 workers assembly line after graduation
I can tell that you were one of those students who would have really 'shined' with the right instructor. Of course we can't go back in time, but perhaps now I can share some of the things I have learned with you (and others) through TH-cam.
I'm watching this video since it was recommended to me (TH-cam recommendations got one right!!), and I'm only at just over 9 minutes in and I have to keep myself from going - "wait, that's not going to work" because I'm thinking in pressure vessels - I keep forgetting that this is a tank that will only hold water, not pressure. So the construction is perfect for that, but I'm so used to seeing copper used for the boilers in these steam setups that I see it and think 'pressure'. I'm gonna finish the video now, but I wanted to say I like it and will find more to watch. :)
@Ron Covell - yeah,bi worked in a shop rhat huilt oil/gas/water separators for the oil industry. Pressure vessels are no joke, which is why there's a limit in size on what's considered 'hobby'. But you can learn a lot by watching people building projects like Quinn and others - definitely enough to know where to go to learn more if you wanted. 😀 I've just watched a few boiler builds recently, and those have to be built just like big pressure vessels if you don't want to find yourself covered in hot steam suddenly. Needs slightly thicker material and no welds, for a couple points (with copper hobby boilers). 😀 Thankfully I knew what you're doing, but my danger sense kept twinging because copper.

I know that the Metric system is the worldwide standard, with just a few outliers.
I'm always fascinated by the different ways metals change color when welded.
Copper and copper-based alloys like Brass and Bronze have a wide spectrum of possible colors. That's one of the reasons so many artists and craftspeople choose them for their work.

Thanks Ron. I have been a beermaker for over 40 years, and I used to follow the beermaking groups on Facebook, but (I have found) that the youngsters in those groups don't have the discipline to keep me interested in following the groups. Too much fighting. I have found that the moonshine and distilling groups tend to be more adult (and better moderated). I have followed your metalworking for a while and really like your approach. I don't distill, but I have always wanted to build a still, just as an exercise in creativity. I would be out in the shop right now, except for two factors: I don't like working outside in the cold, and the price of copper is obscene. Thanks to your guidance, I'll probably spend the next few months learning to TIG weld, and maybe (this time next year), I can complain about the cold again...
Well, perhaps the heat generated by your welding can help you get through the cold winter months.

Hey, that's great news, Steve! Be sure to send me pictures as you move forward. That aluminum backer bar for the welding would have worked a LOT better if I'd taken the time to make hold-downs on both ends of the copper, and the .040-inch gap helped me to get more consistent penetration with the weld. The more we do, the more we learn.

Ron is the mechanics professor we never had. In my school they "taught" us about using the lathe, welder, milling machine and other stuff, but it really was "okay so this in the picture is a lathe, it works like this and you can do this kinda stuff". I am one of the few that learned how to use a lathe cause I would often get bored, wander out of class and casually wind up in the workshop, so I just started to play with the machines till I learned my way on them. If we had a guy like Ron as our prof me and my classmates could've easly put together a 25 workers assembly line after graduation
I can tell that you were one of those students who would have really 'shined' with the right instructor. Of course we can't go back in time, but perhaps now I can share some of the things I have learned with you (and others) through TH-cam.

I'm watching this video since it was recommended to me (TH-cam recommendations got one right!!), and I'm only at just over 9 minutes in and I have to keep myself from going - "wait, that's not going to work" because I'm thinking in pressure vessels - I keep forgetting that this is a tank that will only hold water, not pressure. So the construction is perfect for that, but I'm so used to seeing copper used for the boilers in these steam setups that I see it and think 'pressure'.
I'm gonna finish the video now, but I wanted to say I like it and will find more to watch. :)
Yes, pressure vessel fabrication is much more stringent, and I don't know anything about that trade. I'm glad you do!
@Ron Covell - yeah,bi worked in a shop rhat huilt oil/gas/water separators for the oil industry. Pressure vessels are no joke, which is why there's a limit in size on what's considered 'hobby'. But you can learn a lot by watching people building projects like Quinn and others - definitely enough to know where to go to learn more if you wanted. 😀
I've just watched a few boiler builds recently, and those have to be built just like big pressure vessels if you don't want to find yourself covered in hot steam suddenly. Needs slightly thicker material and no welds, for a couple points (with copper hobby boilers). 😀 Thankfully I knew what you're doing, but my danger sense kept twinging because copper.
